Edvard Grieg: Peer Gynt Suite No.1
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) is the greatest composer Norway has fostered. In retrospect one may wonder how a country with neither national freedom nor a long tradition of art music could have produced a man of such genius. Up to 1814 Norway had been totally subject to Denmark, with Copenhagen as its cultural center. From 1814 to 1905 it was forced into a union with Sweden. The first half of the eighteenth century was a time of poverty in Norway and it was some time before it could assert itself among its Scandinavian brothers. But for the highly gifted these are perhaps the ideal conditions for providing impetus and nurturing growth. In the autumn of 1858, Edvard Grieg, then only 15 years old, went to the Leipzig Conservatory to study music. His teachers were among the most eminent in Europe, and four years later he left the Conservatory as a full-fledged musician and composer. In the years up to 1866, Grieg lived in Copenhagen, leaving it only to make brief study trips. Grieg's style was based on the German romantic tradition of music but bit by bit national awareness developed within him, coupled with a growing need to create a typical Norwegian style of music. His friendships and discussions with other young Norwegians also furthered this development. In Copenhagen Grieg had met Rikard Nordraak, whose patriotism reached its fullest expression in the choral setting of Norway's national anthem. In 1869 Grieg, on a state stipend, left for Italy. His encounter with Franz ...

Edvard Grieg - Funeral March for Rikard Nordraak
Edvard Grieg (15 June 1843 4 September 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist who composed in the Romantic period. Grieg is renowned as a nationalist composer, drawing inspiration from Norwegian folk music. Rikard Nordraak was a very good friend of his, and he was also a composer. When he died, in 1866, Grieg composed this funeral march in his honor. The first paintings till 4:34 are from Caspar David Friedrich (1774 - 1840) was a 19th-century German Romantic landscape painter, generally considered the most important of the movement. He is best known for his mid-period allegorical landscapes which typically feature contemplative figures silhouetted against night skies, morning mists, barren trees or Gothic ruins. His primary interest as an artist was the contemplation of nature, and his often symbolic and anti-classical work seeks to convey a subjective, emotional response to the natural world. Friedrich's work characteristically sets the human element in diminished perspective amid expansive landscapes, reducing the figures to a scale that, according to the art historian Christopher John Murray, directs "the viewer's gaze towards their metaphysical dimension". The second paintings are from Ilya Yefimovich Repin (1844 - 1930) was a leading Russian painter and sculptor of the Peredvizhniki artistic school. An important part of his work is dedicated to his native country, Ukraine. His realistic works often expressed great psychological depth and exposed the tensions ...

Edvard Grieg's Solveig's Song
If I had to choose my favorite piece of music for the human voice, it would undoubtebly be Solveig's Song from Grieg's "Peer Gynt". It's in the deceptive simplicity of the piece where lies the beauty. But, strangely enough, of all the versions available there is not one which seems to be the ultimate version. Even Lucia Popp's version, good as it is, is lacking something. The present recording doesn't feature any singers at all, replacing the singer with violins. It remains my favorite version of this song, as it somehow manages to capture each strand of Solveig's sorrow. I hope you will enjoy this :-)! PS If possible, I would be quite interested in learning your favorite renditions of this song ;-)!

Edvard Grieg,"Peer Gynt","In the Hall of the Mountain King"
В пещере Горного Короля, "Пер Гюнт" Эдварда Грига Edvard Hagerup Grieg, "Peer Gynt", "In the Hall of the Mountain King". In the Hall of the Mountain King (Norwegian: I Dovregubbens hall) is a piece of orchestral music, Opus 23, composed by Edvard Grieg for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, which premiered in Oslo on February 24, 1876. (It was later extracted as the final piece of Peer Gynt, Suite No. 1, Op. 46.) Although a performance of the full piece runs to only two and a half minutes, its easily recognizable theme has helped it attain iconic status in popular culture.

"Hall Of The Mountain King" Keith Medley and his 27-string Medley Guitar
Keith Medley makes beautiful music on his own creation; the one-of-a-kind 27-string guitar. In this new video Keith has re-arranged the classic piece "Hall Of The Mountain King" composed by Edvard Grieg for Peer Gynt in 1875. It is most recently know as an arrangement by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for the David Fincher film, "The Social Network".
Produced by Jon Grimson
Shot on Canon EOS 7D w/EFS 17-55mm. SmallHD DP6 SDI, and ZazaSlider. Edited in FCP, graded in Apple Color.
Keith is an amazing talent as a musician, guitarist and master luthier. He designed and built his Medley 27-string guitar in order to play the music in his head.
This will be in the forthcoming film, "Creative Spirit", and will follow Keith's creative process with detailed documentary of the guitar building process, 3 performance music videos conveying the sights and sounds that result, as well as an ongoing narrative and conversations with Keith. Viewers will understand how Keith's creativity manifests itself, his philosophy and his optimistic attitude to achieve these goals as he literally invents new instruments and playing techniques. Questions of what motivates his creativity, who and what inspires him, how limits and parameters must be imposed in order to reach completion, what are his most difficult challenges, are all topics that will be covered in depth. And most importantly, how does this all translate to viewers in ways that can help them learn and achieve in their lives?
