Leiden University - Experience the tradition
The Dutch city of Leiden is home to the Netherlands' oldest university. Leiden University was founded in 1575 by William the Silent, Prince of Orange, and has had a close relationship with the royal family ever since. Reporter Ashleigh Elson went to visit the university and find out what such long traditions mean to international students in 2011. (Original link: www.rnw.nl

Medieval garbage in Leiden University Library
Dr. Erik Kwakkel discovered a remarkable manuscript in the rich medieval book collection of Leiden University Libraries. It concerns a book from the first half of the eleventh century that is made out of leftovers from animal skins which had been processed to parchment. This is a unique find: never before has such a book been found in a Dutch collection.

Dr Erik Kwakkel (Leiden University; NL)
Chair: Thom Mertens (University of Antwerp) Lecture: 'These Books are Tall and not Wide Enough': Anomalous Page Dimensions in the Eleventh and Twelfth Centuries. VARIOUS CODICOLOGICAL STUDIES have pointed out how the dimensions of the page in medieval manuscripts were more or less standard: as today, the relative width of the page commonl y measured between 0.69 and 0.74 of its height. Sporadic deviations from this norm are encountered throughout the medieval period, most noteworthy books that were much narrower than the norm. However, in the eleventh and twelfth centuries a noteworthy number of such tall and narrow books were produced. This paper investigates this phenomenon: the explanations for the anomalous page dimensions are found in the contents of the books and in their manner of use. ERIK KWAKKEL is lecturer in palaeography at the Leiden University Institute for Cultural Disciplines, where he directs an NWO-funded (Vidi) project on manuscript innovation in the Twelfth-Century Renaissance. He has published on a variety of codicological and palaeographical topics, including in the Gazette du livre mediévale, The Library and Viator. He has published a book on manuscript production in fourteenth-century Brussels (2002), a co-edited volume on Middle Dutch Bible translations and their manuscripts (2007) and is co-editor of a volume on Medieval Authorship (forthcoming in 2011 with University of Toronto Press).

Highlights of "One Day with Hafez", 14th-century Persian poet, Leiden University, Sep. 2012
Video: Persian Dutch Network (www.PersianDutch.com) - The lecturers: Leonard Lewisohn, Janes Lewisohn, Sayed Asghar Ghorab, and performers: Babak Kamgar (tar) and Mercede Hashemi (avaz). The event was organized in September 2012 at Leiden University in The Netherlands which has one of the oldest Persian studies departments in the world. Hafez (1325--1390), was a Persian lyric poet. His collected works composed of series of Persian poetry (Divan) are to be found in the homes of most people in Persia [Iran], Afghanistan and Tajikistan , as well as elsewhere in the world, who learn his poems by heart and use them as proverbs and sayings to this day. His life and poems have been the subject of much analysis, commentary and interpretation, influencing post-fourteenth century Persian writing more than any other author. بخشهایی از برنامه "یک روز با حافظ" در دانشگاه لیدن در هلند، سپتامبر۲۰۱۲ - ویدئو: شبکه ایرانیان هلند

Professor Gerard Unger (Leiden University; NL)
Chair: Professor Chris Coppens (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) Lecture: Jenson's Model of Type and its Development from the 1470s until Today AROUND 1470 OLD FACE came of age with Nicolas Jenson's letterforms. At the end of the nineteenth century and in the early twentieth century, the revival of Jenson's type had much influence on the development of high quality industrial typography. In 1994 Adobe published another version of Jenson's letterforms, designed by Robert Slimbach. By that time typography had gone through such changes that the relevance of this revival, despite its high quality, is uncertain. How do present day technical developments or movements and requirements in design relate to late fifteenth century typography? Does typography on screens need a new William Morris? After a decade of frantic experimentation at the end of the twentieth century, type design goes now through a period of thoughtful and patient research. Type designers have to work with a brand new set of requirements, such as combinations of the Latin with many other scripts, in many different styles, for a new typographic environment and for complex information. GERARD UNGER is professor for typography at Leiden University and for type design at the University of Reading. He is also a practising free lance type designer and graphic designer, presently working on his twentysecond type design and on a PhD thesis. His book "Terwijl je leest" has been translated into English and several other ...
