Saving Lives at Birth: Low-Cost Respiratory Support, Reducing Early Neonatal Death in Rural Malawi
Organization: William Marsh Rice University Organization Location: Houston, TX USA Acute respiratory infections are the leading cause of global child mortality. In the developing world, oxygen therapy is often the only treatment option for babies who are suffering from respiratory distress. Without the added pressure of a bubble Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (bCPAP), babies still struggle to breathe and can suffer serious complications, and frequently death. A stand-alone bCPAP device can cost $6000, too expensive for most developing world hospitals. By contrast, we have engineered a novel, rugged bCPAP system which can be made in small volume at unit cost of only $160. Moreover, because of its simple design—consumer-grade pumps, medical tubing, and regulators—its maintenance requires only the simple replacement of a 25cent diaphragm approximately every 2 years. Through a partnership between bioengineers at Rice University, pediatricians at the University of Malawi and Baylor College of Medicine, and industrial design engineers from 3rd Stone Design we will: (1) rigorously test the efficacy of this device at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi and refine it for use in rural district hospitals; (2) design a complementary training program for nurses and electromedical hospital staff; (3) engineer the bCPAP system for commercial manufacture; and (4) develop a country-wide plan to implement bCPAP at all district hospitals in Malawi. We estimate that on ...

Winters ISD Desktop Virtualization Testimonial
vbridges.com Winters ISD Testimonial Like many school districts, Winters Independent School District in Winters, Texas, was caught in a costly yearly cycle of replacing a segment of outdated PCs every summer in preparation for the new school year. The rural district -- with 650 students and some 500 desktop machines to support -- was spending vast amounts of its small IT staff's time upgrading hardware and software across its three campuses. "We would rotate around the district and replace a certain number of computers in one location every year," according to David Hutton, Superintendent for Schools. "We were constantly investing in upgrading our PCs and software."

TEDxMillCity - Philip Enquist - Imagine There Are No Borders
TEDxMillCity is an exploration of creative methods that help today's leaders gain perspective and inspire change. Philip Enquist, partner in charge of urban design and planning for Skidmore Owings & Merrill, shares a powerful and timely vision for the future of the Great Lakes. Since joining SOM in 1981, Mr. Enquist has focused his work towards strengthening the physical, social, and intellectual infrastructure of cities. In his work, he strives to create the underlying structure for humane and rational habitats, workplaces, open spaces and agricultural areas on a rapidly urbanizing planet. In October of last year, the Chicago and China offices of SOM were named the winner of an international design competition to expand the Beijing Central Business District. The SOM plan calls for three new districts anchored by signature parks and green boulevards, providing a framework that will enable China's capital city to grow as a global center for commerce, yet be a green and ecological setting for healthy life. Over the last two decades, Mr. Enquist has directed development and redevelopment initiatives for college campuses, existing city neighborhoods, new cities, rural districts, downtown commercial centers, port areas and in the case of Bahrain, master-planning an entire nation. During his career, Mr. Enquist has collaborated closely with a wide cross-section of significant governmental and private planning entities. These include the cities of Shanghai, Detroit, Chicago, Los ...

Howth Harbor - Ireland
The Seals and Beautiful scenery just a day at in Howth at the Howth Harbour The Howth Lighthouse and Irelands Eye - Also King George IV footsteps engraved into the stone walk way from his visit in 1821 en.wikipedia.org Howth called in Irish: Binn Éadair) is an area in Fingal County near Dublin city in Ireland. Originally just a small fishing village, Howth with its surrounding rural district is now a busy suburb of Dublin, with a mix of dense residential development and wild hillside, all on the peninsula of Howth Head. The only neighbouring district on land is Sutton, primarily on same peninsula. Howth is also home to one of the oldest occupied buildings in Ireland, Howth Castle. Through the years, Howth has been used for movies such as The Last of the High Kings and Boy Eats Girl. Howth is located on the peninsula of Howth Head, which begins around 13 kilometres east-north-east of Dublin, on the north side of Dublin Bay. The village itself is located 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from Dublin city centre (the ninth of a series of eighteenth century milestones from the Dublin General Post Office is in the village itself), and spans most of the northern part of Howth Head, which is connected to the rest of Dublin via a narrow strip of land at Sutton Cross. The Quick Clay Landslide at Rissa - 1978 (English commentary)
On the 29th of April 1978, a quick clay landslide devastated large areas of the rural district of Rissa I mid-Norway. One person died whilst 13 farms; 2 homes; a cabin and a community centre were taken by the clay masses. Five to six million cubic metres of clay collapsed from an area of 330000 m2 leaving a 1.5 kilometre slide face. The landslide caused great material damage to the community of Leira when a resulting three-metre high floodwave breached the opposite bank of lake Botnen shortly after the main slide. The Rissa landslide was caught on 8 mm cinefilm by two film amateurs. This is still used actively in avalanche preventative and educational work. All rights belong to NGI. URCSF Uganda Rural Community Support Foundation
Mr. Peter Francis Luswata started this non-profit in 2005 to provide free agricultural training to poor small scale farmers in the Rakai District of Uganda. With well over three hundred families currently enrolled in the program, Mr Luswata has worked tirelessly to provide his people with new opportunities to sustain their families and improve living conditions. URCSFs projects help build productive and safe communities as people gain a sense of hope for the future. The farm still has glaring needs to be addressed in order to efficiently continue supplying farmers with the skills, information, and tools they need to reach their goals.

Frank Ifield - "I Remember You" (1962)
Frank Ifield - the official site www.frankifield.com Frank Ifield (born Francis Edward Ifield, 30 November 1937, Coundon, Coventry, Warwickshire, England) is an early Australian-English easy listening and country music singer. He achieved considerable success in the early 1960s, especially in the UK Singles Chart, where he had four Number 1 hits between 1962 and 1963. Frank Ifield moved with his Australian parents to Dural, 50 km (30 miles) from Sydney, about 1946. It was a rural district and he listened to hillbilly music (now called country) while milking the cows. He learned how to yodel in imitation of country stars like Hank Snow. At the age of thirteen he recorded "Did You See My Daddy Over There?", and by the age of 19 was the number one recording star in Australia and New Zealand. He returned to the UK in 1959. His first record in the UK was "Lucky Devil" (1960) which got to number 22 in the UK charts. His next six records were less successful, but he finally broke through with "I Remember You" which topped the charts for seven weeks in 1962. Known for Ifield's falsetto and a slight yodel, it became the top-selling single of that year and was one of the first million sellers within the UK alone. His next single was a double A-side: "Lovesick Blues" and "She Taught Me How to Yodel". "Lovesick Blues" was originally sung by Hank Williams and was treated in an upbeat "Let's Twist Again" style. The other song is a virtuoso piece of yodelling with the final verse ...
