Ludwig Wittgenstein photographed by his friend Ben Richards, an undergraduate in medicine at King's College, Cambridge; they met in 1945 and this photograph was taken in Swansea in the summer of 1947. Wittgenstein openly expressed his love for Richards in letters to friends. See for example Wittgenstein: The Duty of Genius by Ray Monk, p. 503 ff. Monk reproduces the image in his book; see plate 50.
For more information about Wittgenstein and Richards, see Ludwig Wittgenstein by Edward Kanterian, p. 164ff. For more information about the image, see Minds and bodies: philosophers and their ideas by Colin McGinn, Oxford University Press, 1997, pp. 11–12. McGinn says the image was taken in 1945, but that seems to be an error.
