North Korean refugee family in London
Many North Koreans have tried to escape the country's communist regime for the chance of a better life elsewhere. Some of them cross the Tumen River, which divides North Korea and China. BBC's Humphrey Hawksley speaks to a family who defected from North Korea in 2005 and settled in London two years later.

A Look Inside North Korea
North Korea ( listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국), is a country in East Asia, occupying the northern half of the Korean Peninsula. Its capital and largest city is Pyongyang. The Korean Demilitarized Zone serves as the buffer zone between North Korea and South Korea. The Amnok, or Yalu, and the Tumen rivers form the border between North Korea and China. A section of the Tumen River in the far northeast is the border with Russia. The peninsula was governed by the Korean Empire until it was annexed by Japan after the Russo-Japanese War of 1905. It was divided into Soviet- and American-occupied zones in 1945, after the end of World War II. North Korea refused to participate in a United Nations--supervised election held in the south in 1948, which led to the creation of separate Korean governments for the two occupation zones. North and South Korea each claimed sovereignty over the whole Korean Peninsula, which led to the Korean War of 1950. The Armistice Agreement of 1953 ended the fighting; but the two countries are officially still at war against each other, for a peace treaty was never signed.[10] Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991. North Korea is a single-party state under a united front led by the Korean Workers' Party (KWP). The country's government follows the Juche ideology of self-reliance, developed by the country's first and only President, Kim Il-sung. After his death, Kim ...

North Korea's major attractions
This program describes one of the world's most closed states - North Korea's attractions. It is the first time in history that North Korea has allowed Nepali television journalists to visualize its capital Pyongyang and other adjoining areas, including Mangyongdae (Kim Il Sung's birthplace), Arch of Triumph, Panmunjom (located on both sides of the 38th parallel/ DMZ ), Juche Tower, Grand Theatre, The Gates of Pyongyang, the Arch of Triumph, Kim Il Sung Stadium, Kim Il-sung Square, Keumsusan Memorial Palace, Monument to the Korean Workers Party, and Arch of Reunification among others. Journalist Pramod Raj Sedhain of Sagarmatha Television, Nepal's first news channel, has reported on these areas during his 8-day stay in this country.

[백두산 여행] Poet Yundongju, The Tumen River / 스티커 in 백두산, 윤동주와 두만강
Dooman River
Directed by Zhang Lu, 2009, China Writer-director Zhang Lu's fascinating window into a rarely seen corner of rural China revolves around 12-year-old Chang-ho, living with his grandfather and mute sister along the frozen river-border with North Korea. Although fraught with unemployment and other tensions, his community seems sympathetic toward the Korean refugees fleeing famine and misery; Chang-ho even bonds over soccer with one young border-crosser who comes scavenging food for a sibling. But he soon turns on his new friend as suspicions mount against the illegal immigrants and his sister reels from unexpected aggression, provoking a quandary over his loyalties in an exquisitely detailed story of compassion and strife across an uneasy geopolitical border. 30 Seconds of Korea - Han River
Facebook: www.facebook.com Twitter: twitter.com WANT MORE?? (www.thesilkroad.tv) The fourth longest river on the Korean peninsula (after the Amnok, Duman and Nakdong), the Han was once the most prized territory as the original Three Kingdoms of Korea tried to maintain control of it as a trade route to China via the Yellow Sea. After the Korean War, the river played an integral part in Korea's stunning economic rise (known as 'The Miracle of the Han'). However, because its estuary is located at the border with North Korea and no civilians are allowed access to that region, it has largely fallen out of use as a trade route. Today, the Han is revered more for its natural aesthetic beauty than its transport or industrial uses. It is traced by numerous hiking and biking paths that offer not only a breathtaking view of the river at the heart of Seoul, but also numerous restaurants and cafes at which to enjoy a meal, or just a quiet drink, with a view that is considered second only to Namsan Tower, also located in the heart of Seoul. There are ferry cruises along the river all day and into the night, passing under the Han's beautifully-lit bridges, and a Han River Music Festival held every spring. In the summer, the docks offer speedboat rentals. Although the river is usually referred to as The Han, its full name is the Namhangang, which translates to South Han River ('nam' meaning 'south' and 'gang' meaning 'river'). It is easy to find -- in fact, it is hard to miss -- but the ...
