Tuck & Patti

Tuck & Patti are an American jazz duo, whose members are the married couple William Charles "Tuck" Andress (born Oct. 28, 1952 in Tulsa, Oklahoma) and Patricia Cathcart Andress (born October 4, 1949 in San Francisco).

Early life

Guitarist Tuck Andress met singer Patti Cathcart at an audition in Las Vegas in 1980. Prior to this, Tuck had studied classical music at Stanford and had been a session performer with The Gap Band, while Patti had been with The Brides of Funkenstein.

Music career

After relocating to Patti's hometown of San Francisco, Tuck and Patti worked as members of a Bay Area rock-cover band. "We burned up some time with this band," Tuck said, "and then we thought, 'Okay, what are we going to do? We need to make some money while we put together our [own] band—so let's learn some songs as a duo. And all of a sudden, we were out there performing as a duo, neither of us having any idea what we were doing, just figuring it out as we went."

As their fame around the Bay Area grew, they declined offers of recording contracts so they could polish their unique sound. Finally, in 1987, they signed with Windham Hill Records, with whom they recorded their breakout album Tears of Joy, which received airplay on jazz and pop radio stations around the U.S. They recorded several more albums with Windham Hill, then signed with Epic Records for an album in 1995. They followed this with more releases on the Windham Hill and 33rd Street Records labels. They now have their own label, T&P Records, which licenses their recordings for worldwide distribution.

Bobby Darin (born Walden Robert Cassotto; May 14, 1936 – December 20, 1973) was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and actor of film and television. He performed in a range of music genres, including jazz, pop, rock'n'roll, folk, swing and country.

He started as a songwriter for Connie Francis, and recorded his own first million-seller "Splish Splash" in 1958. This was followed by "Dream Lover," "Mack the Knife," and "Beyond the Sea," which brought him world fame. In 1962, he won a Golden Globe Award for his first film Come September, co-starring his first wife, Sandra Dee.

Throughout the 1960s, he became more politically active and worked on Robert F. Kennedy's Democratic presidential campaign. He was present on the night of June 4/5, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles at the time of Kennedy's assassination. The same year, he discovered that he had been brought up by his grandmother, not his mother, and that the girl he had thought to be his sister was actually his mother. These events deeply affected Darin and sent him into a long period of seclusion.

Man in the Mirror

"Man in the Mirror" is a song made popular by Michael Jackson and written by Glen Ballard and Siedah Garrett. Jackson's recording was produced by Quincy Jones and co-produced by Jackson. It peaked at number 1 in the United States when released in January 1988 as the fourth single from his seventh solo album, Bad. It is one of Jackson's most critically acclaimed songs and it was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 2 weeks. The song peaked at number 21 in the UK Singles Charts in 1988, but in 2009, following the news of Jackson's death, the song peaked at number 2, having re-entered the chart at 11 the previous week as his top song on the singles chart. It also became the number 1 single in iTunes downloads in the US and the UK, having sold over 1.3 million digital copies in the former alone.

The song was remixed for the soundtrack of Jackson's tribute tour Immortal.

Composition

"Man in the Mirror" was composed by Glen Ballard and Siedah Garrett. Jackson added background vocals from Garrett, The Winans and the Andrae Crouch Choir, which gave the song its distinctive sound. The song is said to have been one of his favorite songs. Arranged with a gospel choir, Jackson would use a gospel choir again several years later on his hit "Will You Be There". Siedah Garrett also sang Jackson's duet "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" in summer 1987. The song is played in the key of G Major at a tempo of 100bpm. The vocal range is Ab3-C6.
