Shimmer and Shine

Shimmer and Shine is an American animated children's television series originally airing on Nickelodeon as part of the Nick Jr. block. The series premiered on August 24, 2015. Internationally it broadcasts in Canada on Treehouse TV.

The series was based on an unreleased pilot from September 2013.

On February 11, 2016, it was announced that the series was renewed for a second season which will feature new characters and it will also switch to CGI.

Plot

A young girl named Leah is helped by her two genies, sisters Shimmer and Shine, fraternal twins who can collectively grant three wishes every day. They do so by traveling from their home, riding on a magic carpet through a genie wonderland to reach Earth.

Shimmer and Shine, being young genies, often mess up Leah's wishes. This causes the girls to work together to undo their mistakes, solving Leah's problems along the way. They learn that mistakes can be undone and there is no reason to get upset. As they are Leah's secret genies, they must hide when Leah's friend, Zac, is around. However, he is mostly oblivious to the magic and strange things that occur as a result of the twins' mistakes.

Shine!

Shine! is a musical based on characters and situations found in the works of Horatio Alger, particularly Ragged Dick and Silas Snobden's Office Boy, respectively Alger's first best-seller and the one first printed in book form eighty years after it was first serialized in Argosy. Its plot and characters focus on Alger's pervasive theme: that in America one could begin with nothing, and with the right attitude, hard work, application, and a little bit of luck, dream a dream and chart a course on which to achieve it. Richard Seff wrote the book, Lee Goldsmith the lyrics and Roger Anderson the music. Anderson and Goldsmith had previously collaborated on the musical Chaplin.

Shine! was announced for Broadway in 1982, but production was canceled when producer 20th Century Fox disbanded its newly formed theatre division. The show was later produced in 1983 at the Virginia Museum Theatre in Richmond, Virginia, starring George Lee Andrews, Alix Korey and Todd Taylor. A reading of a revised version was seen in 1998 at Off Broadway's York Theatre Company. In 2001, Shine! was part of the National Musical Theatre Network showcase. That performance was recorded and released by Original Cast Records in October 2001. The recording featured performers including Carole Shelley, Harvey Evans, Brooks Ashmanskas and Andrea Burns. The show was published by Samuel French Inc. in 2002.

Mr. Big is an American hard rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1988. The band is a quartet composed of Eric Martin (lead vocals), Paul Gilbert (guitar), Billy Sheehan (bass guitar), and Pat Torpey (drums); The band is noted especially for their musicianship, and scored a number of hits. Their songs were often marked by strong vocals and vocal harmonies. Their hits include "To Be with You" (a number one single in 15 countries in 1992) and "Just Take My Heart".

Mr. Big have remained active and popular for over two decades, despite internal conflicts and changing music trends. They broke up in 2002, but after requests from fans, they reunited in 2009; their first tour was in Japan, in June 2009. To date, Mr. Big has released eight studio albums, the latest being ...The Stories We Could Tell (2014).

The band takes its name from the song by Free, which was eventually covered by the band on their 1993 album, Bump Ahead.

Shine (Mike Oldfield song)

"Shine" is a single by musician Mike Oldfield, released in 1986 (see 1986 in music). "Shine" features Jon Anderson on vocals.

Music video

The music video for "Shine" features use of computer graphics, such as a computer generated game of chess. Oldfield plays a Gibson SG guitar in the video. The video is available on the Elements - The Best of Mike Oldfield DVD.

Shimmer is a novel from Unbridled Books.Eric Barnes (born February 28, 1968) is an American author of the novel Shimmer as well as the author of numerous short stories, including stories published in North Atlantic Review, Prairie Schooner, The Northwest Review, Raritan and other publishers of short literary fiction.

Synopsis

Barnes has written the novel Shimmer (Unbridled Books, July 2009, ISBN 1-932961-67-4). A book about CEO Robbie Case, whose high tech company is built on a lie, Shimmer follows Robbie as he attempts to unwind the lie he has created. The fictional company, Core Communications, is a provider of high end networking services to mainframe computers. Along with his partner and cousin, Robbie has created an elaborate system that supposedly allows mainframe computers to communicate at impossibly fast speeds. However, the system does not work. It is actually built on a technical and financial Ponzi scheme that will fail if the company ever stops expanding.

Shimmer (play)

Shimmer is a 1988 award-winning one-man play by American playwright John O'Keefe. It is a solo performance, portraying multiple characters, that describes life on a harsh juvenile detention farm in the Midwest in the 1950s.

Plot

The solo actor in Shimmer tells the story by becoming each character in turn. The play takes place in 1956, in a harsh Midwestern juvenile detention center, where two boys befriend each other. To survive the brutal environment, the two create their own fantasy world, in which the movement of streams and breezes becomes a language that travels between dimensions, a language the boys call "shimmer." The two boys are eventually locked up, and they are ultimately forced to carefully plan and carry out an escape.

Background

O'Keefe wrote Shimmer after financial restrictions ended his plans for a five-actor play that had been commissioned, by American Inroads in San Francisco, in 1987. O'Keefe then asked if he could do a solo play, and the proposal was accepted. "It was a lot more money with one guy, and I just used lights and a music stand," says O'Keefe. "I wanted to keep the overhead next to zip."
