We interviewed the founder of the notorious Michigan Militia to find out about its ties with Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bombing and more. Check out more VICE documentaries here: bit.ly Norman Olson is the founder of the Michigan Militia, the most famous/notorious/we-think-maybe-oldest? group of the early-90s citizens' militia movement. If you're too young to remember, that was this thing where guys in camouflage got together to train with their guns and guys with cameras pretended they were scary and racist. The movement hit a speed bump when it got blamed for the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, and Norm Olson didn't do much good for his own group when he tried to pass the blame to the Japanese—an idea which, if you subscribe to certain theories concerning the earlier sarin-gas attack on the Tokyo subway and the responsible doomsday cult's alleged connections to the Japanese Imperial Family, makes a limited sort of sense, but otherwise sounds like the craziest of all possible answers. With faith already shaken in his leadership, Norm then hitched the Militia's wagon to fears over that Y2K thing and by February 2000 the group was essentially defunct. However, as you may have heard from the Southern Poverty Law Center or one of the hundreds of press outlets who reprinted their press release as a "story," right-wing militia activity is back on the upswing. A federal court in Detroit has acquitted members of the Hutaree "militia" because the government did not have evidence that they planned to kill a police officer and bomb a funeral. Tina Stone, David Stone Jr., Michael Meeks, Thomas Piatek, and Kristopher Sickles were acquitted. David Stone Sr., and his son Joshua Stone, still face illegal weapons charges. "There was no case. There was no conspiracy," said Michael Rataj, who is representing Tina Stone. He said the case was the result of "overzealous federal agents," according to the Detroit Free Press. The judge also said the prosecution did not have a case. "The prosecution is not free to roam at large — to shift its theory of criminality so as to take advantage of each passing vicissitude of the trial," Judge Victoria Roberts said. "If the government now admits that the plan alleged in Count 1 of the indictment (seditious conspiracy) did not exist, then defendants must be acquitted." "The government's case is built largely of circumstantial evidence. While this evidence could certainly lead a rational fact finder to conclude that 'something fishy' was going on, it does not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that defendants reached a concrete agreement to forcibly oppose the US government," Roberts wrote in her 28-page ruling. Fox is part of the Three Percenters—a militia with its own flag, plenty of guns and a manifesto that proclaims it only takes three percent of gun owners to overthrow the government. We started filming this documentary independently over one year ago with very little funding, which we obtained by throwing a party. The crew waived their salary and we received equipment free of charge. During this period we roamed through the communities of Vidigal, Vila Autódromo, Providência, the port region of Rio and the surroundings of the Maracanã stadium, collecting images, interviewing residents, participating in their meetings, debates and conflicts. These communities have been recognized as some of the most affected by real estate speculation, a phenomenon in which housing prices are increasing due to preparation for the major world events to be hosted in Rio: the World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016. As a result of the rising prices, Rio residents, primarily the poorest residents are being forced to move to distant suburbs that lack infrastructure and services and are dominated by heavily armed militia.
We then began to investigate were these billions of Brazilian reais directed towards the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics are being directed. It is quite clear that a large sum of this money will come from tax payers’ pockets, only to be used for the financial gain of a small group of contractors, politicians, bank owners and businessmen involved in these events. The legacy left for the benefit of the majority of the population will be minimal. And worst of all, many communities are being removed illegally in areas of great real estate interest, and the residents are relocated to distant suburbs that lack infrastructure and are dominated by a heavily armed militia.
In addition, we have acquired images of UPP (Pacifying Police Unit) in Mangueira, and the Almeão Complex cable car, through our collaborators. We also interviewed professor Carlos Vainer of the Institute of Research and Urban and Regional Planning of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IPPUR/UFRJ), an expert in the field of mega events and state and federal deputies Marcelo Freixo and Romario. In the case of the latter we were obliged to visit Brasilia and took the opportunity to film the nation’s capital and the construction being done at Mané Garrincha stadium.

They can work against us, creating horrible images that leave us paralyzed with fear and they can also work for us, building a world where everything we do is an adventure, a miracle. And the most amazing thing is that we hold the power to control our minds - we allow fear to dominate our lives or we choose to dominate fear. Those are our only two choices.
