Michael Rothschild was the William Stuart Tod Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He was dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University from 1995 through 2001. Rothschild is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Econometric Society. . He co-authored one of the most important papers in economics, "Equilibrium in Competitive Insurance Markets: An Essay on the Economics of Imperfect Information" with Joseph Stiglitz. This paper gives the first systematic explanation of the problem of cherry picking when insurance companies compete for customers. In 2001 the Nobel Prize in Economics recognized the importance of this paper. That year's prize went to George A. Akerlof, A. Michael Spence and Joseph.Stiglitz "for their analyses of markets with asymmetric information". The citation indicated that the primary reason that this prize went to Stiglitz was his joint work with Rothschild on Competitive Insurance Markets. Honors Colloquium 2012 - Jonathan Gruber
Dr. Jonathan Gruber is a Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has taught since 1992. He is also the Director of the Health Care Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research, where he is a Research Associate. He is an Associate Editor of both the Journal of Public Economics and the Journal of Health Economics. In 2009 he was elected to the Executive Committee of the American Economic Association. He is also a member of the Institute of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Social Insurance. Dr. Gruber received his BS in Economics from MIT, and his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. Dr. Gruber's research focuses on the areas of public finance and health economics. He has published more than 140 research articles, has edited six research volumes, and is the author of Public Finance and Public Policy, a leading undergraduate text, and Health Care Reform, a graphic novel. In 2006 he received the American Society of Health Economists Inaugural Medal for the best health economist in the nation aged 40 and under. During the 1997-1998 academic year, Dr. Gruber was on leave as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy at the Treasury Department. Schwab, MDFACS developed an interest in natural history and evolutionary biology. He attended West Virginia University and graduated with a degree in biology from the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences in 1969 followed by a medical degree from WVU in 1973. Completing his residency at Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco and following three fellowships in Ophthalmology, Dr. Schwab became a professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California, Davis. He has been active with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, several professional societies, and has served as a Board Director on the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has an active clinical practice, and is engaged in research on ocular surface disease. As a result of his research interests, he was the first person n the United States to transplant bioengineered tissue to the ocular surface in 1999. Chomsky received his Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1955.
