Musical Score Carl Stalling the Warner Brothers music legend: amzn.to Jack Frost paints the leaves orange and brown as he warns the animals of the forest that Old Man Winter is coming. A bear cub mocks the idea, via song. He's a grizzly bear, he declares; and he's got a nice, warm coat. Later, his mother tucks him into bed, but he tries to sneak away. She spanks him and puts him back to bed. Tearfully, he runs away from home. He enjoys seeing the jack o' lanterns come to life, and listening to the scarecrow scat sing. But suddenly Old Man Winter arrives, and the poor bear cub is freezing. He'll need Jack Frost's help, in this animated musical short. Flip The Frog - Fiddlesticks (1930)
Flip the Frog was Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's first sound cartoon. It is about a happy-go-lucky, needy frog, named Flip the Frog. This cartoon was created by Ub Iwerks in 1930. He had drawn a frog and his girlfriend in "Night'", one of the last Silly Symphonies short films he drew while working for Walt Disney. After leaving Disney, Ub Iwerks began the Flip cartoon series with the help of Pat Powers. The first cartoon that Ub Iwerks made for the series was called Fiddlesticks (released on August 16, 1930), and it was also the first color sound cartoon ever made. Fiddlesticks was made in two-color Technicolor. The rest of the Flip series were made in black and white, except for Techno-Cracked (1933).

Funny Face (1933) - Ub Iwerks Flip Cartoon
Probably the greatest of all the Flip the Frog cartoons, according to Leonard Maltin in his book "Of Mice And Magic". After he is dumped by his Betty Boop-ish girlfriend for a boy that's more handsome, Flip decides that a facelift is in order. This cartoon was posted here on YouTube by someone else, but the audio and video was not in synchronization with each other. I've corrected that issue in this post.

The Headless Horseman (1934) A Ub Iwerks Cartoon ;-)
Ub Iwerks (his name was Dutch) was an early colleague of Walt Disney's, a prolific animator who was almost single-handedly responsible for such classic works as STEAMBOAT WILLIE and THE SKELETON DANCE. But after Iwerks had a falling-out with the boss in 1929 he struck out on his own and established a studio under his own name, where, for the next few years, he and his crew produced dozens of cartoons. The best of them are pretty good, and there's always a nice moment or two in even the weaker entries, but Iwerks never recaptured the spark of inspiration that fired his earlier work with Disney, and his studio finally went under in 1936. A chastened Iwerks returned to the Disney factory as a technician and worked there for the rest of his career. THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN was one of a series of "ComiColor" cartoons Iwerks produced, usually based on fairy or folk tales, not unlike Disney's concurrent Silly Symphonies. It's a decent cartoon with both good and bad elements, and serves as an exemplar of the strengths and weaknesses of the overall Iwerks output. On the plus side, the musical score by Carl Stalling (who left Disney's employ alongside Iwerks) is outstanding, extremely catchy and atmospheric, and really carries the viewer along. The color is nice, too, at least in the print I've seen; the Cinecolor process Iwerks was using was cheap, and thus not as dazzling as Disney's product at the time, but the blues and reds look strong here, and the backgrounds, such as sinister ...

This biographical film was made for a project in my Animation Seminar class. Each student was assigned an important historical figure in the field of animation to complete a 1-2 minute film touching on their contributions.
Thanks to my friend Dave for his awesome vocals.
The following is a list of resources I used for researching the project and sourcing images, video, and music.

Disney's Art of Animation, Dave Thomas
The Hand Behind the Mouse, Leslie Iwerks
Video:
The Birds, Alfred Hitchcock

Fester Goes Fishing
This is the second in my series of Fester Fish cartoons.
It's an homage to the classic theatrical shorts of the 1930s and 40s. It took me about eight months to make it, finishing in May 2011. I used Flash to do the animation, although I drew it all by hand, frame by frame. The backgrounds were coloured in Photoshop. My big inspirations with this cartoon were Fleischer's Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons, as well as some Ub Iwerks shorts.
