The mouth is the first portion of the alimentary canal that receives food and saliva.^[1] The oral mucosa is the mucous membrane epithelium lining the inside of the mouth.

In addition to its primary role as the beginning of the digestive system, in humans the mouth also plays a significant role in communication. While primary aspects of the voice are produced in the throat, the tongue, lips, and jaw are also needed to produce the range of sounds included in human language.

The mouth, normally moist, is lined with a mucous membrane, and contains the teeth. The lips mark the transition from mucous membrane to skin, which covers most of the body.

The first space of the mouth is the mouth cavity, bounded laterally and in front by the alveolar arches (containing the teeth), and posteriorily by the isthmus of the fauces. The oral cavity is also known as the mouth which swallows food that then goes down the esophagus and into the stomach.

The mouth plays an important role in eating, drinking and breathing. Infants are born with a sucking reflex, by which they instinctively know to suck for nourishment using their lips and jaw.

Cultural aspects[link]

Lips can be adorned with lipstick or lip gloss, although in most cultures this is typically only practiced by females. Both men and women, however, apply lip balm in order to soothe chapped or dry lips.

Piercings in or around the mouth have been made popular by younger generations, including those on the lip or tongue. The uvula piercing, while increasing in popularity, remains relatively rare.

The philtrum is the vertical groove in the upper lip, formed where the nasomedial and maxillary processes meet during embryo development. When these processes fail to fuse fully, a hare lip and/or cleft palate can result. This can result in the encouraging process of the release of metabolic wastes.

The nasolabial folds are the deep creases of tissue that extend from the nose to the sides of the mouth. One of the first signs of age on the human face is the increase in prominence of the nasolabial folds.

Some animal phyla, including vertebrates, have a complete digestive system, with a mouth at one end and an anus at the other. Which end forms first in ontogeny is a criterion used to classify animals into protostome and deuterostome. Merril Bainbridge (born 2 June 1968 in Melbourne, Victoria) is an Australian pop music singer and songwriter. Her debut was in 1994 with the single, "Mouth", which peaked at number-one for six consecutive weeks in Australia and became a top five hit in the United States.^[1]

Early career[link]

Bainbridge started performing when she was at the age of nine and her first performance was at a carnival and her sisters persuaded her into entering, because the prize was free carnival tickets.^[2] She came third and won twenty dollars worth of tickets.^[2] After six years of performing in a variety of bands in Australia, and doing backup vocal work in exchange for studio time,^[3] Bainbridge began a solo career under the tutelage of producer Siew.^[3] Bainbridge stated that she and Siew "really connected well, from a creative point. I liked the way he worked and I knew I had so much more to learn in that environment [and] that's how it started. That was the point where I started feeling a lot more confident as a singer and then wanting to dive more into the songwriting side."^[3] She also worked a day job before quitting to concentrate solely on music.

In 1994 Bainbridge was signed to Ross Fraser and John Farnham's newly-formed Gotham Records label.^[4] Fraser first heard Bainbridge when he received a tape in the mail and was interested by the combination of voice and guitar.^[4] "Mouth" was Bainbridge's debut release and the first song released from her debut album The Garden by Gotham Records. "Mouth" was released in Australia on November 1994 but was lost in the Christmas shuffle. It was reissued in February 1995 where it came to be the biggest song of Bainbridge's career, peaking at number-one in Australia for six consecutive weeks before becoming the fourth highest selling single in Australia for 1995.^[5][6] The second song released from The Garden was "Under the Water" which is a song about a lover who drowned, released in Australia in June 1995. The song was not as big as "Mouth" but was still successful peaking at number four in Australia^[5] and accrediting platinum by ARIA. The Garden was released in Australia on 31 July 1995, where it debuted at its peak position at number five on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart and certifying two times platinum selling 140,000 copies around Australia.^[7] On October 1995 the third song off the album was released titled "Power of One" which was not as big but still charted in Australia at number twenty-one.^[5] The ninth annual ARIA Awards saw Bainbridge nominated for five awards including "Best Pop Release", "Breakthrough Artist - Single", "Best New Talent", "Single of the Year" and "Best Female Artist" but failed to win the awards.^[8] The fourth and final song "Sleeping Dogs" was released in Australia in February 1996 and featured Bee Gees song "I Started a Joke" which was used for the bridge of the track. The song only peaked at number fifty-five in Australia.

Marc Nathan signed Bainbridge to the Universal Music record label in the United States by 1996.^[9] "Mouth" was released in the United States on 20 August 1996 and became the most requested song on American radio for three weeks.^[10] The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number sixty-seven and after twelve weeks, the song peaked at number four.^[11] It spent a total of thirty weeks in the charts selling 600,000 copies and earning a gold single.^[12] The Garden was released on 24 September 1996 and debut on the Billboard 200 at number one hundred and sixty-one and after six weeks just missing the top one hundred it peaked at its peak position of one hundred and one.^[13] "Mouth" was the only release that Bainbridge released in the United Kingdom. It was released in November 1996 but did not show great success peaking at number fifty-one and spending eight weeks in the top two hundred.^[14] At the end of 1996 saw Bainbridge toured thirty cities in the U.S. for forty days and she presented an award at the Billboard Awards.^[4] She also performed at Madison Square Gardens supporting American singer Sheryl Crow.^[4] "Under the Water" was released in the United States on 18 February 1997 and at first debut at number seven on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart and after two weeks it broke into the Billboard Hot 100 at number ninety-seven. It took the song four weeks to reach its peak position of number ninety-one and fell out of the chart from then on spending six weeks in the Hot 100.^[11]

While Bainbridge was completing her first international tour, she started writing the album Between the Days which she refers to it being a place she found herself when she was working on the album.^[15] The first single released from the album was "Lonely" which received wide radio airplay on FOX FM upon its release but only managed a peak at forty in Australia,^[5] number eighteen on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart and number twenty-five in Japan. Later that year, she released a cover of "I Got You Babe" featuring a small contribution from Shaggy (which appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Welcome to Woop Woop), the song only reached number sixty-two in Australia. Two more songs were released from the album "Between the Days" and "Walk on Fire" but both failed to chart.

In 1999 Bainbridge participated in John Farnham's "I Can't Believe He's 50" tour with Kate Ceberano, Ross Wilson, James Reyne, Human Nature, and Nana-Zhami, she covered Farnham's tracks "Burn for You" and "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head".

In 1999 Merril Bainbridge recorded "Sydney from a 747", a song written and previously recorded by fellow antipodean Paul Kelly. The track appeared on the soundtrack of the IMAX film Sydney - A Story of a City and was released as part of an official music compilation for the Sydney 2000 Olympic games entitled "Olympic Record" (WEA Australia, 2000). This album is currently out of print.

2000–present[link]

In 2000 Bainbridge recorded a song named "Friends" for the Australian film The Magic Pudding which is featured on its soundtrack. Bainbridge attempted a comeback in 2003 with the song "Girl Next Door" and an album which was untitled but the song failed to chart and so the album got shelved. She is often mentioned in "Where Are They Now?" lists on television. She has been working backstage as a composer for other Australian pop artists.^{[citation needed]}

Tim Exile (or Exile) is the recording alias of Tim Shaw, a producer and performer of electronic music spanning drum and bass, IDM, breakcore and gabber.

History[link]

A classically trained violinist, he began experimenting with electronic music aged 12, and gained his first drum and bass release in 1999.^[1] In the following years he released mostly for the legendary Moving Shadow imprint, and John B's Beta Recordings, having met John B at Durham University.^[2] After the completion of his philosophy degree, he went on to study an MA in electroacoustic composition at Durham. Perhaps unsurprisingly, his drum and bass grew increasingly experimental, and his debut LP (Pro Agonist, 2005) was released by Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu label, more commonly associated with the IDM scene.

Unsatisfied with the possibilities of conventional DJing, Exile programmed his own performance tools (at first using Pure Data and running into difficulties, he then switched to Reaktor) to allow improvisational live sets, which led to official work for Native Instruments.^[3]

In 2009 he contributed a cover of a Jamie Lidell song to the Warp20 (Recreated) compilation. He also toured the US in late 2009 supporting and collaborating live with Imogen Heap.^[4]

Michael Matusow (born April 30, 1968 in Los Angeles, California) is an American professional poker player, residing in Henderson, Nevada. Matusow's nickname of "The Mouth" reflects his reputation for trash-talking at the poker table. He is also known for sometimes ruining hours or days of good play with a single spectacular misjudgment, (known as a "Mike Matusow Blow-up" or "Mike Matusow Meltdown").^[1][2][3]

Matusow began playing poker seriously in the early 1990s, first while working as a poker dealer, then as a professional player.^[4] His successes include being a three-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner,^[5][6][7] and the winner of the 2005 World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions.^[8]

Early years[link]

Matusow's first experience of poker was playing video poker in the Maxim Casino at the age of 18, which he played regularly, to the extent that he suffered from repetitive strain injury in his shoulders and arms. He occasionally stole money from his mother's purse and at one point attended Gamblers Anonymous meetings. Matusow was taught Texas hold 'em in 1989 by a rounder named Steve Samaroff.^[9]

World Series of Poker[link]

At the 1998 World Series of Poker (WSOP), Matusow paid part of Scotty Nguyen's entrance fee into a satellite event for the $10,000 no limit Texas hold 'em main event. Nguyen went on to win, and gave $333,333 to Matusow in return for his partial stake.^[9][10] In 1999, Matusow won his first WSOP bracelet, winning the $3,500 No Limit Hold'em event defeating Alex Brenes heads-up to win the title.

In 2001, he finished 6th place in the WSOP $10,000 no limit Hold 'em main event. Matusow says that the decisive hand was when he was bluffed by eventual champion Juan Carlos Mortensen, but did not trust his instincts to call.^[9][11]

At the 2002 WSOP, Matusow won his second bracelet by winning the $5,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split 8 or Better event. He defeated his friend and fellow professional poker player Daniel Negreanu to win the tournament.

In the 2005 WSOP, Matusow finished 9th out of 5,619 players in the main event, winning $1,000,000.^[12] Several months later, he won the WSOP Tournament of Champions in a heads-up battle against Hoyt Corkins, earning another $1,000,000 in the process, making him the first player to win two million dollar prizes in the same year. He also placed third in the Tournament of Champions the following year, winning $250,000.^[8][13]

At the 2008 WSOP, Matusow won a third bracelet in the $5000 No Limit 2–7 Draw with rebuys event defeating Jeff Lisandro heads up for the $537,862 first prize.^[7] Later in the same year he finished 30th out of 6,844 players in the Main Event, making yet another deep run in the Main Event.

In October 2004, Matusow made his first World Poker Tour (WPT) final table at the UltimateBet Aruba Classic, earning $250,000 for 3rd place.^[14] In 2006, he finished runner-up to Tony G in the WPT Bad Boys of Poker II in heads-up play.^[15] Matusow also appeared in Poker Superstars III, where he made it to the Elite Eight. In the winner-take-all championship match, Matusow beat seven other players to win $500,000. He also appeared in the second, third, fourth and sixth season of High Stakes Poker.^[16][17] In September 2006, Mike made his debut on the European Poker Tour (EPT) in Barcelona; however, he was eliminated on the first day. In early 2007, Matusow appeared on two episodes of Poker After Dark where he finished 3rd and 2nd respectively. He plays online poker under the following aliases: "dill pickle" (UltimateBet); "mrpokejoke" (PokerStars); and "Mike Matusow" (Full Tilt Poker, where he is also a member of "Team Full Tilt").^[1][4]

In July 2007, Matusow won $671,320 after coming in second place at the World Poker Tour Bellagio Cup III Championship after online pro Kevin Saul defeated him during heads-up play.^[18] On November 11, 2008 at the World Poker Tour Foxwoods World Poker Finals, Matusow made another WPT final table, He was eliminated after his A♠ J♥ didn't improve against Jonathan Little's hand of 9♥ 9♠, he finished in 6th place, earning $124,048.

As of 2010, his total live tournament winnings exceed $7,400,000.^[19] $3,140,713 of his winnings have come at the WSOP.^[20]

Personal life[link]

Matusow is both loved and disliked by many poker fans. At the 2007 WSOP Main Event final table, Tournament Director Jack Effel asked the audience to recognize one of Effel's "favorite" players. The fans cheered and booed.^[21] Matusow has had several personal problems. He has battled drug issues, including a six-month stint in jail in 2004 and 2005 after being caught providing ecstasy and prescription painkillers to an undercover police officer who pretended to befriend Matusow and gained his trust. After several months of an official Las Vegas Metro Police "Sting Operation", Matusow was arrested and charged with 6 category A Felonies, all drug related. ^[22] A Plea deal was later reached where Matusow was incarcerated in The Clark County Dentention Center for 6 months. ^[23][24]

He has also dealt with being overweight, detailed on ESPN's broadcast of the 2007 WSOP. During that tournament, Mike made a $100,000 bet with Ted Forrest that he could get down to 181 pounds by June 3, 2008. Mike won the bet on June 3, weighing in at 179 pounds.^[25] Matusow resides in a 3,700-square-foot (340 m²) home in Henderson (with a cathedral ceiling) and bought a $90,000 BMW 645 CI cabriolet from a $750,000 winning session at online poker.^[9] He often wears a gold chain with the Hebrew symbol 'chai' around his neck.^[9] Additionally, Matusow hosted Card Player's poker radio show/podcast, the Circuit, before being replaced by Gavin Smith and Joe Sebok.^[26] He was also the host of Card Player's now defunct online video segment, "The Mouthpiece." In one particular episode, Mike discussed the controversial Ultimatebet.com superuser cheating scandal, as well seeking legal action as a victim of the scandal against the main perpetrator, former World Series of Poker Champion Russ Hamilton.^[27]

In 2009 Mike Matusow signed a contract with Deepstacks.com to become the Dean of Deepstacks University, an interactive poker training site.

Matusow wrote an autobiography entitled Check Raising the Devil that was released May 12, 2009.^[28]
