  Coatbridge (Scots: Coatbrig, Scottish Gaelic: Drochaid a' Chòta) is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, about 10 miles (16 km) east of Glasgow city centre, set in the central Lowlands. The town, with neighbouring Airdrie, is part of the Greater Glasgow urban area. While the earliest known settlement of the area dates back to the Stone Age era, the founding of the town can be traced to the 12th century when a Royal Charter was granted to the Monks of Newbattle Abbey by King Malcolm IV. Coatbridge, along with its neighbour Airdrie, forms the area known as the Monklands.
  It was during the last years of the 18th century that the area developed from a loose collection of hamlets into the town of Coatbridge. The town's development and growth have been intimately connected with the technological advances of the industrial revolution, and in particular with the hot blast process. Coatbridge was a major Scottish centre for iron works and coal mining during the 19th century and in this period was described as 'the industrial heartland of Scotland' and the 'Iron Burgh'.

  Kirkwood (Atlanta)
  Kirkwood is a neighborhood on the east side of Atlanta, Georgia, United States. It is a historic streetcar suburb, and was designed by architect Will Saunders. Kirkwood is situated entirely in DeKalb County, located near Lake Claire, East Lake, and Oakhurst. Kirkwood is bound on the north by DeKalb Avenue and on the south by Memorial Drive.
  Prior to the Civil War, much of the property that now comprises Kirkwood belonged to the Kirkpatrick family. Another portion belonged to the Dunwoody family. The name Kirkwood was derived from a blending of the two family names.
  Kirkwood traces its beginnings to residential development begun in the 1870s. While no one would consider Kirkwood a suburb of Atlanta today, an early tour book described it as an “area of beautiful suburban villas.” Kirkwood was an early streetcar suburb of Atlanta. By 1910 streetcars provided express service to and from Atlanta three times daily, and street cars continued service along some streets including Kirkwood Road until the early 1950s.

  Kirkwood High School is a secondary school in Kirkwood, Missouri. It is located at 801 W Essex Ave, Kirkwood, MO. The school is part of the Kirkwood R-7 School District. The current principal is Dr. Mike Havener who replaced Dr. David Holley after he retired at the end of the 2010-2011 school year.
  Kirkwood High School as an academic institution has a history that dates back to 1865, when the Kirkwood School District was founded. A temporary building opened in the fall of 1866 and high school and elementary students attended school together. Jefferson Avenue School was the district's first formal school and was built in 1869. The Booker T. Washington School, which opened in 1869 on Adams near Geyer Rd was built for African-American students to attend. In 1888, the district built the Adams Avenue School next to the Jefferson School, which offered a two-year high school program for students completing elementary grades. In 1896, Kirkwood offered the first four-year high school program in St. Louis County; 10 students were members of the first graduating class in the spring of 1897. In 1922, a new, four-year high school was built on Kirkwood Road, where Nipher Middle School is currently located.

  Kirkwood Hospice is a hospice situated in Dalton, Huddersfield, in West Yorkshire, England. It provides Specialist palliative care for the terminally ill in Kirklees. It was built on the site of the former Mill Hill Isolation Hospital, which closed in 1971
  Kirwood hospice provided help and assistance in the formation of the Laura Crane Trust.
  Kirkwood is dependent on private donations and charitable gifts. To help raise funds for patient care the hospice organises annual activities such as the 'Midnight Memory Walk', which has raised in excess of £200,000 for patient care over the last three years and an 'It's a Knockout' style tournament. Other major fundraising events include Tandem skydiving.

  Kirkwood, California
  Kirkwood (formerly, Kirk, Kirkwood's, and Roundtop) is a census-designated place in Alpine and Amador counties, California, United States. The population was 158 at the 2010 census. Kirkwood's main attraction is the Kirkwood Mountain Resort. The town is accessible by State Route 88. Kirkwood is within the Eldorado National Forest.
  Zack Kirkwood, a cattle rancher who had settled in the area, opened an inn, named Kirkwood's, in 1863 with the opening of the Amador/Nevada Wagon Toll Road, the primary route through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The following year, Alpine County was created and the redrawing of the county borders placed the inn at the convergence of Alpine, El Dorado, and Amador counties (the borders were later changed so the inn is no longer in El Dorado County, but the original signpost marking the intersection of the three is still in the building). Eventually, the inn became a fashionable summer resort.
  After Zack's death, the inn stayed in the family and continued to operate until 1966, when it was sold to an investment group, who then converted it into the present-day Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

  Kirkwood, Missouri
  Kirkwood is an inner-ring suburb of St. Louis, located in St. Louis County, Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 27,540. Founded in 1853, the city is named for James Pugh Kirkwood, builder of the Pacific Railroad through that town. It was the first planned suburb located west of the Mississippi River.
  Plans for a new community close to St. Louis began following the St. Louis Fire (1849) and the 1849 cholera outbreak that killed a tenth of the residents of downtown St. Louis. Kirkwood was the first suburban municipality built outside of the St. Louis City boundaries.
  Hiram W. Leffingwell and Richard Smith Elliott bought land 14 miles (23 km) from downtown in 1850 at about the same time James P. Kirkwood was laying out a route for the Pacific Railroad. When the railroad reached the community in 1853, the developers sold lots for the Kirkwood Association. Other Leffingwell developments were to include the construction of Grand Avenue and the establishment of Forest Park.
  The original town plat including quarter section blocks and families could be a block estate of 5 acres (20,000 m²). Deed restrictions prohibited industrial development.

  Kirkwood is a town in Broome County, New York, United States. The population was 5,857 at the 2010 census. The town is named after James P. Kirkwood, who was an engineer responsible for constructing the local railroad.
  The Town of Kirkwood is in the south-central part of the county, southeast of Binghamton, New York.
  Around 1781, Jonathan Fitch built a gristmill here, becoming the first pioneer settler. The Town of Kirkwood was formed from the Town of Conklin in 1859.
  In 2006 and 2011, parts of the town were damaged when the Susquehanna River overflowed its banks.
  According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 31.4 square miles (81 km²), of which, 31.0 square miles (80 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²) of it (1.37%) is water.
  The south town line is the state line of Pennsylvania (Susquehanna County).
  The Susquehanna River forms the western border. US Route 11 and Interstate 81 pass through the town, following the course of the Susquehanna. New York State Route 17 passes across the north part of the town.

  Kirkwood is a rural unincorporated community located at the intersection of Kirkwood and River Roads in southwestern Orange Township, Shelby County, Ohio, United States.
  Originally named Pontiac before the name change, Kirkwood is located halfway between Sidney to the north and Piqua to the south in neighboring Miami County. The original Dayton and Michigan Railroad, later B&O, Chessie System, and now CSX Transportation runs through Kirkwood. The rural community is visible from Interstate 75 as an overpass over Kirkwood Road, although no exit for Kirkwood exits.
  The offices for Orange Township are located in Kirkwood.
  The Kirkwood Grain Company, built by William Berry in 1812, was closed in 1981 and subsequently demolished. Shelby Crop Service, later Estech, closed in the mid-1980s.
  The remains of the agriculture business, a fertilizer distribution center located on River Road, went through several name changes since 1987 from the former Estech to Kaiser-Estech, IMC, Vigoro, Royster-Clark and presently Crop Production Services. The offices and warehouse of the former Shelby Crop Service became home to industrial lumber business Wappoo Wood Products Incorporated in 1987. The Miami River Stone Company is also located in Kirkwood with its divisions Sidney Sand and Gravel and Western Ohio Cut Stone Company (now part of Barrett Paving Materials Inc.)at the western terminus of Kirkwood Road, near the Great Miami River.

  1578 Kirkwood, also known as 1944 DF, 1949 TF, 1951 AT and 1952 FK, is an asteroid which was discovered January 10, 1951 at Goethe Link Observatory near Brooklyn, Indiana by the Indiana Asteroid Program. This program was conceived and directed by Frank K. Edmondson of Indiana University. The photographic plates were blinked and measured astrometrically by B. Potter and, following her retirement, by D. Owings; and the photometry was performed under the direction of T. Gehrels. During the years 1947–1967, in which the plates were exposed, a large number of people participated in various aspects of the program. The asteroid is named for astronomer Daniel Kirkwood (1814–1895), who was an Indiana University professor.

• Billy Kirkwood
  Billy Kirkwood (born 1 September 1958) is a Scottish former football player. He is currently a Rangers youth coach.
  Kirkwood made his name with Dundee United, where over 400 appearances saw him clinch the Scottish Premier Division title and two League Cup wins, alongside five domestic cup runners-up medals. After a short spell with Hibernian and similarly short return to United, Kirkwood moved to Dunfermline, before finishing his career with Dundee.
  After Ivan Golac was sacked in 1995, Kirkwood was appointed manager of Dundee United. Kirkwood could not prevent the Terrors from being relegated to the First Division. In the following season, Kirkwood guided United to a play-off victory and promotion back to the Premier Division. He was then sacked six games into the 1996-97 season and replaced by Tommy McLean, who would lead United to third place.
  Kirkwood had a short caretaker manager role with St. Johnstone in 2001, after Sandy Clark was sacked. He has also held the assistant manager position at Dundee, Dunfermline and St Johnstone, and coaching roles with Livingston and Rangers.

  Carol Kirkwood (born 29 May 1962) is a Scottish weather presenter, employed by the Met Office and best known for forecasting the weather for BBC Breakfast.
  Kirkwood was born Carol MacKellaig in Morar, Invernessshire, Scotland. She was one of eight children and her parents ran a hotel in Morar; she was a Girl Guide. After attending Lochaber High School in Fort William, Carol gained a BA in commerce from Napier University in Edinburgh.
  After graduation, Kirkwood joined the BBC's Secretarial Reserve in London and after a series of internal moves presented short slots on BBC Radio Scotland, and then BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 4. She subsequently worked as an Associate Director in recruitment and as training consultant for a management consultancy in Cheshire.
  Kirkwood rejoined the BBC at Elstree Studios training department in 1993 as a freelance presenter, during which time she presented a bi-monthly programme Talking Issues for HTV West. In 1996 Kirkwood joined the new UK operation of The Weather Channel, but after it closed down in January 1998 she underwent training under the guidance of the BBC at the Met Office, before joining BBC News as a weather presenter. She has appeared regularly on BBC One, BBC News, BBC World News, BBC Red Button and the BBC News at Six, and has been the main weather presenter on BBC Breakfast since 2008.

  Cris Kirkwood
  Christopher "Cris" Kirkwood (born October 22, 1960) is an American musician who is the bassist and a founding member of the Meat Puppets, an alternative punk rock band.
  Raised in Paradise Valley, Arizona, Cris took up the banjo after seeing Deliverance, moved on to guitar, and ultimately picked up the bass when he started playing together in bands with his older brother Curt. In 1980 the brothers and their friend Derrick Bostrom, a drummer, decided to form a band, which they eventually named the Meat Puppets. Besides playing bass Kirkwood's role in the band grew over the years to include singing and songwriting. Their certified gold album of 1994, Too High to Die, featured two songs written and sung by Cris.
  Unfortunately, Kirkwood's use of drugs began to spin out of control, and he developed a heroin addiction. Kirkwood retreated to his house in Tempe, Arizona, where he and his wife, Michelle Tardif, who was also an addict, lived in virtual isolation. Tardif eventually died of a drug overdose in August 1998. After the release of the album No Joke! in 1995, Kirkwood's compulsive behavior during what was already a stressful time for the band led to the Meat Puppets entering a period of inactivity. Despite numerous interventions and rehab stays, Kirkwood remained addicted to narcotics for a number of years.

  Daniel Kirkwood
  Daniel Kirkwood (September 27, 1814 - June 11, 1895) was an American astronomer.
  Born in Harford County, Maryland, he was graduated in mathematics from the York County Academy in York, Pennsylvania in 1838. After teaching there for five years, he became Principal of the Lancaster High School in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and after another five years he moved on to become Principal of the Pottsville Academy in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. In 1851 he became Professor of Mathematics at Delaware College and in 1856 Professor of Mathematics at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where he stayed until his retirement in 1886, with the exception of two years, 1865–1867, at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.
  Kirkwood's most significant contribution came from his study of asteroid orbits. When arranging the then-growing number of discovered asteroids by their distance from the Sun, he noted several gaps, now named Kirkwood gaps in his honor, and associated these gaps with orbital resonances with the orbit of Jupiter. Further, Kirkwood also suggested a similar dynamic was responsible for Cassini Division in Saturn's rings, as the result of a resonance with one of Saturn's moons. In the same paper, he was the first to correctly posit that the material in meteor showers is cometary debris.

  David Kirkwood
  David Kirkwood, 1st Baron Kirkwood, PC (1872 – 16 April 1955) was a socialist from the East End of Glasgow, Scotland, viewed as a leading figure of the Red Clydeside era.
  Kirkwood was educated at Parkhead Public School and was trained as an engineer. Kirkwood's earliest political involvement was through his trade union, the Associated Society of Engineers, and the Socialist Labour Party, which he left in 1914 to join the Independent Labour Party (ILP). He was recognised as the Scottish engineers' leader for many years.
  He served on the Glasgow Trade Council and was a member of the Clyde Workers' Committee (CWC), an organisation chaired by William Gallacher. The CWC grew out of the Clyde engineers' pay dispute of 1915. Until its effective suppression in early 1916 it organized shop floor opposition to the policies of the Ministry of Munitions with regard to Leaving Certificates and Dilution of Labour. Kirkwood was the convenor of shop stewards at Parkhead Forge of William Beardmore and Company, where, in January 1916, he helped to secure a dilution agreement. In March 1916, as a result of a strike related to the implementation of the dilution agreement, Kirkwood was arrested and deported from Glasgow to Edinburgh, an event which greatly increased his profile. He returned to Glasgow in 1917, and was employed as foreman at the Mile-End Shell Factory. In January 1919 Kirkwood was prominently associated with the 40 hours' Strike. Batoned and arrested at a riot in George Square, Glasgow, he was tried for incitement to riot and acquitted. In the 1922 General Election Kirkwood was elected to the House of Commons as Member of Parliament (MP) Dumbarton Burghs. He had previously served for four years on Glasgow Town Council.

  Davie Kirkwood (born 27 August 1967 in St. Andrews, Scotland) is a Scottish former professional football player.
  Kirkwood started his career with East Fife and joined Rangers under Graeme Souness in 1987. After a disappointing spell in Glasgow he re-joined The Fifers on loan and signed for Hearts. He played with Airdrieonians and Raith Rovers before retiring. He scored from the penalty spot for Raith Rovers against his old club Rangers in what turned out to be a Rangers victory.

  Fred Kirkwood (31 July 1890 – 18 August 1956) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy and Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL).
  From Surrey Hills, Kirkwood was a wingman in Essendon's 1912 premiership team, having spent the previous two seasons at Fitzroy. His final season in 1914 was marred by a four game suspension for using "insulting language" at an umpire. Kirkwood later served in World War I.

  James ("Jimmy") W. Kirkwood (born 12 February 1962) is a former field hockey player and Irish cricketer, who was born in Northern Ireland.
  Kirkwood was a member of the golden winning British squad at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
  At the 1990 World Cup Kirkwood was involved in a serious accident on the pitch, in the match between Canada and Ireland. Nick Sandhu, the Canadian deep defender had the ball under control and was in the process of hitting to clear. When Kirkwood dived low from the left to tackle he got badly hit by Sandhu's follow through. Kirkwood's cheekbone was fractured and needed fifteen stitches. Kirkwood played for YMCA and Lisnagarvey.
  Kirkwood also played for the Irish cricket team, representing Ireland three times. Kirkwood made 27 runs at an average of 8.6, with his high score of 27 coming against Gloucestershire. In addition to his batting, Kirkwood could also slot in as an athletic wicket-keeper. Kirkwoods appearances for Ireland were limited due to his hockey commitments

  Joe Kirkwood, Jr. (born 30 May 1920) is a former professional golfer on the PGA Tour, and a motion picture actor.
  Kirkwood was born in Melbourne, Australia. His father Joe Kirkwood, Sr., who was a golf pro and who taught him to play golf, is acknowledged as having put Australian golf on the world map. In 1948, he and his father both made the cut at the U.S. Open, the first father and son to do so and a record tied only in 2004. When Joe Kirkwood, Jr. defeated Sam Snead to win the 1951 Blue Ribbon Open in Milwaukee, United States, they became the third father-son winner in the history of the PGA Tour which in 2005 still has only six such winners.
  In 1945, Joe Kirkwood, Jr. was invited by Monogram Pictures to test for the role of boxer Joe Palooka. He got the part and starred in eleven Joe Palooka films between 1946 and 1951 plus in the 1954 television series "The Joe Palooka Story." Later in the 1950s he was one of the reporters on the popular radio program Monitor on NBC Radio.

  Kirkwood was born in Sydney, Australia. As a ten-year-old, he left home to work on a sheep ranch in the Australian Outback where his boss introduced him to the game of golf. He developed his skills to the point where he could compete in his country's most important golf tournaments. In 1920 he won the Australian Open and in that year's New Zealand Open he astounded the golfing world with a victory that surpassed the previous tournament record score by twelve strokes.
  Kirkwood's success led to his going on tour in England and Europe where, in his first competition, he defeated the great Harry Vardon. In 1923, he began playing on the professional tour in the United States, winning that year's Houston Invitational, and becoming the first Australian to win on what became the PGA Tour. In 1924, he was one of the top ranked golfers on the Tour, scoring five victories, three of which were consecutive. He remains co-holder of the record for the widest winning stroke margin in PGA Tour history, set at the 1924 Corpus Christi Open in Texas. That year he also teamed up with Walter Hagen to begin traveling around the globe putting on golf and trick-shot exhibitions, newsreels of which were sent back home to be shown in movie theaters around the U.S.

  John "Jack" Gamble Kirkwood (May 30, 1907, Gotebo, Oklahoma — August 9, 1959, New Haven, Connecticut) was a noted chemist and physicist, holding faculty positions at Cornell University, the University of Chicago, California Institute of Technology, and Yale University.
  Kirkwood was born in Gotebo, Oklahoma, the oldest child of John Millard and Lillian Gamble Kirkwood. His father was educated as an attorney and worked as a distributor for the Goodyear Corporation. In addition to Jack Kirkwood, there were two younger sisters: Caroline and Margaret.
  In 1909, the family moved to Wichita, Kansas.
  Showing remarkable talent in mathematics and physics, Kirkwood was persuaded by A. A. Noyes to enroll at Caltech before finishing his high school education. He attended Caltech for two years before transferring to the University of Chicago, where he was awarded his Bachelor of Science in 1926.
  Kirkwood received an S.B. in Physics from the University of Chicago in 1926, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from MIT in 1929, where he worked with Frederick Keyes. He spent two years in Europe, where he worked with Peter Debye and visited Arnold Sommerfeld.

  Kenneth William Kirkwood (born April 27 1969 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian bioethicist. He is Professor of Applied Health Ethics at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. He specializes in questions of professional ethical standards, enhancement of human physiological and neurological traits, and sociological-philosophical questions of health research.
  He is a teacher of some renown, having been declared amongst the top 30 lecturers in Ontario universities by public broadcaster TVOntario in 2007.
  His most notable contribution to public debate have been on bioethical questions of doping in sport, specifically in the Olympics and the Tour de France.

• Kirkwood Otey
  Kirkwood Otey (October 18, 1832-June 1, 1897) served as the commanding officer of the 11th Virginia Infantry in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War.
  Otey commanded the regiment first as a major, then as a colonel in the years 1864-1865, until General Robert E. Lee's surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9, 1865. While still a major in command of the 11th Virginia, Otey was wounded in the shoulder during the immortal frontal assault known as Pickett's Charge near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This occurred on the third and final day of the Battle of Gettysburg (the bloodiest and probably most decisive engagement of the conflict), on July 3, 1863. Otey survived, however, and would serve as commanding colonel of the unit until the war ended.
  Otey died in 1897 and is buried in Lynchburg, Virginia's Spring Hill Cemetery next to his wife.

  Lucy Kirkwood (born c. 1984) is a British playwright. She is writer in residence at Clean Break Theatre Company.
  Kirkwood is from East London and has a degree in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh where she performed as part of the improvisational comedy troupe, The Improverts.
  In 2005, she wrote and starred in her first play, Grady Hot Potato, at the Bedlam Theatre. It was also selected for the National Student Drama Festival.
  The following year she took two productions of her second play, Geronimo to the Edinburgh Fringe, under the title The Umbilical Project. The two plays, Cut and Uncut, were an experiment in cutting the cord between writer and production. Uncut was directed by Lucy herself and Cut by a completely separate company under the direction of Matt Addicott. No contact was made between the two companies during the rehearsal period, prompting the tag line "Two casts, two crews, two directors, two venues, one new play... no communication".
  Her third play Guns or Butter, about soldiers being overcome by the horror of war, was written for the Terror 2007 Festival at the Union Theatre, London.

  Patricia Kirkwood (24 February 1921 – 25 December 2007) was a British stage actress who appeared in numerous performances of dramas, cabaret, revues, music hall, variety, and pantomimes. She also performed on radio, television, and movies. She was the first woman to have her own television series on the BBC.
  Patricia Kirkwood was born in Pendleton, Salford, England to William and Norah Carr Kirkwood. Her father was a Scottish shipping clerk. She was educated at Levenshulme High School in Manchester. At the age of 14 she entered a talent contest at Ramsey, Isle of Man and was asked to sing on the BBC's Children's Hour. A few months later, in April 1936, she took part in a sketch, The Schoolgirl Songstress at the Hippodrome in Salford. Throughout 1936 Kirkwood appeared in a number of local variety shows including a pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, in which she played Princess Dorothy. During Christmastime 1937 she took the roll of Dandini at Shaftesbury Theatre, in the pantomime "Cinderella", along with Stanley Lupino. Over the next two years she worked in cabaret, variety shows, and pantomimes.

• Robert C. Kirkwood
  Robert C. Kirkwood (August 30, 1909 – May 5, 1964) served as a member of the California State Assembly representing part of Santa Clara County from 1947 until 1953, when he resigned to accept an appointment as California State Controller by Governor Earl Warren. Kirkwood was elected to a full term in 1954, but lost a re-election bid in 1958 to Alan Cranston, who later became a United States Senator.
  Born in Mountain View, California, Kirkwood married Jean Hazard Gerlinger on August 30, 1933. They went on to have four children—two daughters and two sons.
  In 1959, Kirkwood was appointed Utilities General Manager of the San Francisco Water Department. He died in San Francisco in 1964. The Water Department named a hydroelectric plant in Alpine County after Kirkwood, and the plant came online in 1967.
  Kirkwood's son, Bob Kirkwood, was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Sierra Nevada Conservancy in 2005.

  Samuel J. Kirkwood
  Samuel Jordan Kirkwood (December 20, 1813 – September 1, 1894), was an American politician best known as Iowa's American Civil War Governor. He also served in the U.S. Senate and as U.S. Secretary of the Interior.
  Samuel J. Kirkwood was born in 1813 in Harford County, Maryland. At age 17, he began teaching school and had as one of his pupils his cousin Daniel Kirkwood, who later achieved prominence as a mathematician and astronomer. Samuel spent part of his youth in Washington, D.C., then joined his father in moving to Ohio in 1835. There he became a well-known anti-slavery Republican. He was elected to several state offices and worked closely with Thomas Bartley, the future governor of Ohio, in the 1840s.
  In 1855 Kirkwood moved to Iowa, living northwest of Iowa City, and became involved with the Clark family, also from Ohio, in a milling venture, and then with the Clark and Lucas families in land speculation. Kirkwood married Jane Clark, the sister of Ezekiel Clark, and thus became the brother-in-law of Edward Lucas, son of Robert Lucas. Although Kirkwood intended to leave politics behind him in Ohio, he took an interest in the newly founded Republican Party. Summoned from his mill at Coralville and still coated in flour dust, Kirkwood gave a rousing speech at the founding meeting of the Iowa Republican Party in February 1856. Many people credited Kirkwood’s speech and subsequent work with the success of the Republican Party in Iowa; that year he was elected to the Iowa Senate serving from 1856 to 1859.
