Acid Reflux Treatments What is Acid Reflux? Acid Reflux or Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is not a disease rather it is a condition. Over stuffing and under eating, excess use of spicy foods, regular drinking of alcohol and smoking accompanied with no exercise are considered as primary causes for acid reflux. In acid reflux the food in the stomach starts coming back to the esophagus. Food that is rising in the esophagus is not the simple food. It also contains strong acids and digestive enzymes. This acidified food burn the protective mucosal lining of the lower esophagus due to this burning mucosal lining becomes weak and even it is destroyed completely. This burning and destruction makes mucosal lining more sensitive to have ulcers and cancers. Most prominent sign and symptoms include burning sensation behind rib cage and stabbing pain in chest. Other symptoms include frequent coughing, difficulty in swallowing, sinusitis, voice changes due to damage of voice box and nausea. In case of improper treatments and ignorance acid reflux will be converted in to serious diseases like ulcers, strictures, inflammation of throat, larynx and lungs and even cancers. Acid Reflux Treatments Acid Reflux can be treated in two ways. One is proper medication and other is simple alteration in life style and eating habits. Whatever you use as acid reflux treatment it is highly recommended to consult with doctor. This is because of the fact that medicines used to treat other diseases can inhibit drugs used to treat Acid Reflux. Acid Reflux Treatments can be classified in to three broad categories. - Changes and Alteration in Life Styles - Medication - Surgery or Laparoscopic Surgery Changes and Alteration in Life Styles In this treatment patients are advised to change their life style from eating habits to sleeping habits and even body postures during physical workouts. If we talk about eating habits patients will have to quit spicy foods, coffee, alcohol. It is also suggested to reduce the consumption of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower. It is also recommended to have smaller meal but more than 3 times. Avoid having meal just before going to bed. This will reduce stomach expansion during digestion. Chewing gum just after having meal will increase the production of saliva that in turns neutralize the acid in esophagus and in turn give relief in acid reflux. Patients are advised to follow the following guidelines - Give up smoking. - Cut down caffeine intake. - Bring down stress - Try to maintain ideal body weight. - Try to avoid wearing waist fitted clothes. - Do not do physical workouts after having meal. Bad body postures such as bending or slumping that causes contraction of stomach can increase the chances of GRED. Patients are recommended to try to keep their body in straight and comfortable posture. Don't sleep without pillow. Keep your upper body elevated this will not let the fluid come in esophagus. Medication Proton Pump Inhibitor Drugs Specific drugs are also designed to use as acid reflux treatments. Some drugs lower down the acid production by deactivating cell surface molecules (proton pumps) in gastric lining. Proton pumps work with positively charged Hydrogen ions and increase acid production. Proton pump inhibiting drugs have serious side effects. Antacids Mild cases are treated with Antacids. Aluminum hydroxide, Magnesium hydroxide, Calcium hydroxide and Sodium bicarbonate are common antacids used as acid reflux treatments. Antacids increase the pH of stomach and decrease acidity by neutralizing acid in stomach. Antacids must be taken after one hour of having meal. Because antacid can not stay longer in the empty stomach and leave the stomach with in the hour. Meal increases the retention time of antacid in stomach. Other than lowering pH antacids have certain undesirable side effects. Aluminum containing antacids can cause constipation while magnesium containing antacids can cause diarrhea. Liquid antacids are preferred over tablets. Strongest liquid antacids available are Maalox II, Mylanta II, Gelusil II and Extra Strength Riopan Alginic Acids Alginic acid is the active component of foam barrier tablets. Foam barrier tablets contain Alginic acid in combination with aluminum hydroxide gel and magnesium trisilicate. Alginic acid in tablet form protective coating on stomach and lower esophageal mucosal lining. This allows cells to regenerate and repaired. Foam barrier tablets forms foam in stomach. This foam starts floating on the top of the liquid content of stomach. Foam act as physical barrier and does not let liquid to rise in esophagus. Two foaming barriers Gaviscon and Algicon are commercially available. It is recommended to chew well after 30 to 60 minutes of having meal or before going to bed. http://EzineArticles.com/1399204 http://www.youtube.com/user/Wikiheartburn http://youtu.be/bmXTUeEeeZw

Eating spicy foods, such as pizza, may cause a person to feel heartburn. Although the name may imply the heart, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart itself. Heartburn is pain felt in the chest by a burning sensation in the esophagus, which is located close to where the heart is. Here you can see the pizza passing from the mouth to the esophagus and on to the stomach. At junction between the stomach and esophagus is the lower esophageal sphincter. This muscular sphincter acts as a valve that normally keeps food and stomach acid in the stomach and prevents the stomach’s contents from regurgitating back into the esophagus. However, certain foods may affect the lower esophageal sphincter, making it less effective. That’s how heartburn begins. The stomach produces hydrochloric acid to digest food. The stomach has a mucous lining that protects it from hydrochloric acid, but the esophagus does not. So, when food and stomach acid regurgitate back into the esophagus, a burning feeling is felt near the heart. This feeling is known as heartburn. Antacids may be used to relieve heartburn by making stomach juices less acidic, therefore reducing the burning feeling felt in the esophagus. If heartburn becomes frequent or prolonged, medical intervention may be necessary to correct the problem. ---------------- Gastroesophageal reflux disease X-ray showing radiocontrast agent injected into the stomach entering the esophagus due to severe reflux Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), gastric reflux disease, acid reflux disease, or reflux (in babies and young children) is a chronic symptom of mucosal damage caused by stomach acid coming up from the stomach into the esophagus. GERD is usually caused by changes in the barrier between the stomach and the esophagus, including abnormal relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter, which normally holds the top of the stomach closed, impaired expulsion of gastric reflux from the esophagus, or a hiatal hernia. These changes may be permanent or temporary. Treatment is typically via lifestyle changes and medications such as proton pump inhibitors, H2 receptor blockers or antacids with or without alginic acid. Surgery may be an option in those who do not improve. In the Western world between 10 and 20% of the population is affected. Signs and symptoms Adults The most-common symptoms of GERD are: Heartburn Regurgitation Less-common symptoms include: Pain with swallowing/sore throat (odynophagia) Increased salivation (also known as water brash) Nausea Chest pain Coughing GERD sometimes causes injury of the esophagus. These injuries may include: Reflux esophagitis – necrosis of esophageal epithelium causing ulcers near the junction of the stomach and esophagus Esophageal strictures – the persistent narrowing of the esophagus caused by reflux-induced inflammation Barrett's esophagus – intestinal metaplasia (changes of the epithelial cells from squamous to intestinal columnar epithelium) of the distal esophagus Esophageal adenocarcinoma – a rare form of cancer Some people have proposed that symptoms such as sinusitis, recurrent ear infections, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis are due to GERD; however, a causative role has not been established. Causes GERD is caused by a failure of the lower esophageal sphincter. In healthy patients, the "Angle of His"—the angle at which the esophagus enters the stomach—creates a valve that prevents duodenal bile, enzymes, and stomach acid from traveling back into the esophagus where they can cause burning and inflammation of sensitive esophageal tissue. Treatment The treatments for GERD include lifestyle modifications, medications, and possibly surgery. Initial treatment is frequently with a proton-pump inhibitor such as omeprazole. Lifestyle Certain foods and lifestyle are considered to promote gastroesophageal reflux, but most dietary interventions have little supporting evidence. Weight loss and elevating the head of the bed are generally useful. Moderate exercise improves symptoms, however in those with GERD vigorous exercise may worsen them. Stopping smoking and not drinking alcohol do not appear to result in significant improvement in symptoms.[24] Avoidance of specific foods and of eating before lying down should only be recommended to those in which they are associated with the symptoms. Foods that have been implicated include coffee, alcohol, chocolate, fatty foods, acidic foods, and spicy foods.
Acid reflux is a common problem as you age, happen to be overweight or eat the wrong foods. http://www.simplehealthexercises.com/categories/Nature-Cures-Remedies/ At times acid reflux can be caused by an infection in the stomach or with the stomachs lining being damaged. This leads to bloating and uncomfortable rise in acid levels coming up into the throat. Acid reflux diet is required to relieve symptoms of heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux. It is wise to remember if pain persists that you consult a qualified medical practitioner as some cases could lead to cancer. The natural remedies for acid reflux are substitutes to drugs and surgery since they are inexpensive and have no side effects. It is utilized conventionally for over long periods, particularly in isolated and rural locations. They have been discovered successful and capable of stopping the increase of stomach acids to the esophagus, contributory to acid reflux or heartburn. In fact, acid reflux diet is subjected of widespread medical researches because their effectiveness persists to perplex doctors and scientists. You must be aware more about these frequent traditional herbs and how they give relief and remedy without requiring for acid reflux medications or surgery. There are several natural therapies deemed to be effective in managing the disease. Apple cider vinegar is one particular theory pertaining to the acid sensitivity of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). As a person grows older, the ability to produce stomach acid can be impaired. This will result to alterations of body functions including the weakening of the muscular valves of the LES. Hence, LES becomes inefficient in preventing leakages of stomach contents to the esophagus. Apple cider vinegar can increase the supplement of acid in the stomach to hasten the digestion processes before regurgitated food can leak out of the digestive system. Adding this ingredient into your acid reflux diet is essential. Licorice in therapeutic studies is established to have flavonoids in the roots. In several cases, reflux may end up to over oozing of stomach acids and the victim will require medication to hinder the over production of acids. That is why, as opposite to the effects of acid cider vinegar, the flavonoids in licorice can avert the over secretion of acids. Bladder wrack based on scientific studies is another herbal plant that holds magnesium carbonate and alginic acid. Magnesium carbonate is medically utilized as an antacid. However the efficacy of alginic acid in avoiding stomach acid is thus far to be investigated. When you are preparing for an acid reflux diet, you can combine these herbs into your food. Barley grass is another natural treatment as it is composed of amino acids and chlorophyll, efficiently exploited as anti-inflammatory ingredients. Preferably, young barley grass are simmered and drunk as tea to grant gastric relief. Additionally, Mastic gum is an evergreen shrub, having hydrochloric acid greatly effective in eradicating helicobacter pylori, a bacterial strain that originates reflux disorder. Cabbage juice has glutamine substance, accepted as an all time preferred to be part of an acid reflux diet for rural folks to supply natural cure for acid reflux. Slippery elm is also worthwhile to be part of the diet as it does have soothing properties which can successfully ease the mucous membranes of the esophagus. Surgery may be an option in those who do not improve. In the Western world between 10 and 20% of the population is affected. GERD may be difficult to detect in infants and children, since they cannot describe what they are feeling and indicators must be observed. Symptoms may vary from typical adult symptoms. GERD in children may cause repeated vomiting, effortless spitting up, coughing, and other respiratory problems, such as wheezing. Inconsolable crying, refusing food, crying for food and then pulling off the bottle or breast only to cry for it again, failure to gain adequate weight, bad breath, and belching or burping are also common. Children may have one symptom or many; no single symptom is universal in all children with GERD. Of the estimated 4 million babies born in the US each year, up to 35% of them may have difficulties with reflux in the first few months of their lives, known as 'spitting up'.[6] One theory for this is the "fourth trimester theory" which notes most animals are born with significant mobility, but humans are relatively helpless at birth, and suggests there may have once been a fourth trimester, but children began to be born earlier, evolutionarily, to accommodate the development of larger heads and brains and allow them to pass through the birth canal and this leaves them with partially undeveloped digestive systems. Most children will outgrow their reflux by their first birthday. However, a small but significant number of them will not outgrow the condition. This is particularly true when a family history of GERD is present. It is a linear copolymer with homopolymeric blocks of (1-4)-linked β-D-mannuronate (M) and its C-5 epimer α-L-guluronate (G) residues, respectively, covalently linked together in different sequences or blocks.
The monomers can appear in homopolymeric blocks of consecutive G-residues (G-blocks), consecutive M-residues (M-blocks) or alternating M and G-residues (MG-blocks).
Commercial varieties of alginate are extracted from seaweed, including the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera, Ascophyllum nodosum, and various types of Laminaria. It is also produced by two bacterial genera Pseudomonas and Azotobacter, which played a major role in the unravelling of its biosynthesis pathway. Bacterial alginates are useful for the production of micro- or nanostructures suitable for medical applications.
