Middle East Protests at US Embassies Spread in Uproar Over Anti-Muslim US Film
DemocracyNow.org - Protests are spreading in the Middle East over a movie made by a US filmmaker considered blasphemous to Islam. Earlier today, hundreds of Yemeni demonstrators stormed the US embassy in Sana'a, smashing windows and burning cars before breaking through the compound's main gate. Protests have also occurred in Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Tunisia and Bangladesh, as well as the occupied Gaza Strip. We get updates from journalists Iona Craig in Sana'a and Sharif Abdel Kouddous in Cairo. A New Day In Old Sana'a (2005) (HQ)
A New Day In Old Sana'a (2005) (HQ) British Yemeni documaker Bader Ben Hirsi spins a pleasant Arabian fable in this exquisite romantic film advertised as the first feature film to come out of Yemen... Synopsis In this achingly romantic tale, handsome young Tariq is about to marry Bilquis, eldest daughter of a prominent and powerful judge. But as he wanders the ancient city of Sana'a late one night, he spots a beautiful young woman dancing in the street and falls madly in love with her. Before long, the young groom must choose between following his heart and protecting his family's honor. Filmed entirely on location in the ancient city of Sana'a, this exquisite film is the first feature ever to come out of Yemen. Cast: Nabil Saber, Dania Hammoud, Paolo Romano, Sahar Alasbahi, Redha Khoder, Amal Ismail, Tawquir Iskandar, Najla Atef, Yehia Ibrahim, Fawziya Al Asbahi, Faten Abdoub Rebic Al-Nabhani, Ghaima Saleh, Mona Alasbahi, Yemen Abdullah, Ousama Alhadi British Yemeni documaker Bader Ben Hirsi ("9/11--Through Saudi Eyes") spins a pleasant if gossamer Arabian fable in "A New Day in Old Sana'a," advertised as the first feature film to come out of Yemen. Constraints imposed by the country's hyper-conservative government are pretty obvious in the inoffensive story of a young blueblood torn between love and tradition; the only surprise is the abundance of veiled and unveiled women. But the glimpses afforded of Old Sana'a are a Lonely Planet addict's dream, and festival coverage ...

Peaceful protest in 'Change Square' (Sana'a, Yemen) the evening before attacks - March 11th, 2011
Eight hours after filming this, the square was attacked by security forces using live bullets and poisonous gas during dawn prayers. All the demonstrators are unarmed and have been camping peacefully in the square since the 18th Feb, 2011. Two demonstrators died and almost a thousand injured this morning. Armed thugs blocked off entrances to the square with bricks, however demonstrators tore the walls down. Medics were arrested for helping injured demonstartors stuck in the square, and only a few ambulances were allowed to pass. Hospitals filled up today (12/03/2011), however demonstrators remain steadfast and non-violent in the square.

Angry Protestors Storm US Embassy In Yemen
Anger and protests, in the Arab world have spread today to Yemen, where massive crowds have stormed the grounds of the American embassy in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. protesting over a US based alleged anti-Islam film. Hundreds of Yemeni demonstrators attacked the US embassy in Sanaa, clambering over the high walls to gain access to the US Embassy with many reported injuries. Police fired shots into the crowd to gain control, but the sheer force of numbers overcame them and once inside the compound, the protestors set fire to vehicles. There have also been clashes at the US Embassy in the Egyptian capital, Cairo. Hundreds of Muslims line the street, chanting pro Islam slogans armed with sticks, metal bars and smoke bombs. Which has prompted President Mursi to release a statement saying "I condemn and oppose all who... insult our prophet. But it is our duty to protect our guests and visitors from abroad." The anger over the film has also spread to Bangladesh as Muslim men march on the streets in protest ,saying that the film maker must be arrested immediately punished. These protests follow the deaths of US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and four other US Embassy officials at the US Consulate in Benghazi on Tuesday. At first, the attack in Benghazi was believed to be a protest 'against' the alleged anti-Muslim film, but now the US believes the attack was pre meditated and that a militant Jihadist group may have carried out the attack. In response to the rising tensions and ...
