British actor Idris Elba, who stars as Mandela, almost did not make it to the red carpet after being rushed to hospital in London suffering from an asthma attack. He turned up just in time to be embraced by Mandela's ex-wife Winnie, who attended the premiere. Elba spoke with emotion about working under the direction of British filmmaker Justin Chadwick and about his fellow actors: "This story is so much bigger than me, than any of us, and when we were given the task of bringing this story to life it was under the guidance of Justin and Anant (Singh, the movie's producer). But I'll tell you now, as long as I've worked as an actor, I've never worked with a more committed set of actors. In true spirits, these are my comrades, for real," said Elba. The film is based on the former South African president's autobiography of the same name. It chronicles his early life, his struggle against white minority rule and his 27 years in prison before becoming head of state. As president, Mandela oversaw huge social change in South Africa, based on truth and reconciliation. Nelson Mandela's ex-wife, Winnie Madikizela Mandela, said: "We should remember where we come from and that this freedom was hard earned, and that it was won at a very, very heavy price." British actress Naomie Harris plays Mandela's wife Winnie in the movie, a performance for which she has earned high praise. She said it was one of the biggest challenges of her career: "Even after filming I still felt like she (Winnie) was still haunting me, because I did so much research to get into that character. You really have to find a way of deeply connecting withher. And it's not like when you play a fantasy character, an imagined character." she said. "This is a real, living icon for many people. She polarizes people in terms of their opinion about her, butfor many people, she is Mother Africa. You have to honour that," added Harris. The film tells the story of three white Afrikaans boys who decide to spend a school holiday there. They are taught that the black man is the enemy, the new South Africa is a lie and a war will be waged on the country's white people, which they need to be prepared for. "Fatherland" is producer and director Tarryn Lee Crossman's first full-length documentary. "It was a really complicated experience making this film and being in the camps with these men. A lot of people have asked me what changed in my mind about Afrikaans people after being in the camp and it was the opposite of what you would think. I think I went into the camp thinking that, 'I'm sorry, a lot of Afrikaans people are racist,' but I came off the camp with more empathy for a disenfranchised culture, you know. These guys, like Franz, are heartbroken that they fought for something and now they have nowhere to be," she says. The documentary not only tells the boys' stories but also the stories of the men who run the camps, Afrikaans soldiers left behind after 1994, who denounce the so-called 'Rainbow Nation'. The film looks at the connection between cultural identity and prejudice, and how a simple belief can become intensely political. "The reason why I agreed to let the film come out - I was debating whether to release the film or not because of the conflict it was going to cause - and I decided to do it because I feel like a lot of the things that were said in the film on a less extreme level are still part of everyday life in South Africa. And unless we start owning up to that and debating and talking about it, it's never going to go away if we stay behind close doors," says Tarryn Lee Crossman. The film follows an introverted school teacher in rural South Africa who starts an obsessive sexual affair with a 16-year-old pupil with tragic consequences. The film screened this week at the London International Film Festival, where director, Jahmil X.T. Qubeka, outlined his motives in making the movie." When I set out to make the film, again the other narrative challenge that I wanted to give myself was that I pretended that I was working in the conventions of 1950s Hollywood, mean that OK even though there's depictions of violence and sexual content in the film I wanted to do it in a stylized manner and also I made a lot of things suggestive and I left a lot of things in your head.'' The film is a beautifully timed thriller as a female police officer gets closer and closer to a grisly truth. The director is not quite sure if the film's infamy is a blessing or a curse: ''It's a double edged sword for me, on the one level this is a small film, it's an independent film, so by definition you will always be struggling and jostling for attention for a film like that especially on a wider scale, in terms of the world of films - it has no stars, it's in black and white, it's a South African film, so really in terms of attention not many people would have heard of the film had the banning not happened. So the now I am 'the banned film from South Africa' that has given it some kind attention. However, I say it's a double edged sword because on the other hand who wants to be associated with child pornography?'
