Dorling Kindersley (DK) is an international publishing company specializing in illustrated reference books for adults and children in 51 languages. It is currently part of the Penguin Group.

Established in 1974, Dorling Kindersley publishes a range of titles in genres including travel, (including Eyewitness Travel Guides), art, history, cooking, gardening, and parenting. They also publish a children’s catalogue for children, toddlers and babies, covering such topics as history, the human body, animals and activities.

DK has offices in New York, London, Munich, New Delhi, Toronto and Australia.

Dorling Kindersley was founded as a book-packaging company by Christopher Dorling and Peter Kindersley in London in 1974, and in 1982 moved into publishing. The first book published under the DK name was a First Aid Manual for the British voluntary medical services; this book established the company's distinctive visual style of copiously illustrated text on a glossy white background. DK Inc. began publishing in the United States in 1991.

In 1999 DK printed 18 million Star Wars books but sold fewer than half of them leaving the company with crippling debt. As a direct result DK was taken over the following year by the Pearson PLC media company and made part of Penguin Group, which also owns the Penguin Books label.^[1]

Dorling Kindersley's London office is at Shell Mex House, 80 Strand, a 1930s Art Deco building easily recognizable from the River Thames by its distinctive clock.

Dorling Kindersley publishes an extensive range of titles internationally for adults and children. Most of the company's books are produced by teams of editors and designers who work with freelance writers and illustrators. Some are endorsed by "imprimaturs": well-known and respected organizations such as the British Medical Association, the Royal Horticultural Society and the British Red Cross. Some DK books apparently produced by celebrity authors such as Carol Vorderman are actually ghostwritten by the company's own writers and editors.

Popular titles that DK has published include a series of large-format "visual guides" with such titles as Universe, Earth, Animal, Human, History, and Prehistoric Life, each of which is more than 500 pages.^[2]

Other successful book series published recently include Eyewitness, DK Handbooks and The Brainwaves.

BradyGames[link]

BradyGames is a publishing company in the United States operating as a DK imprint, which specializes in video game strategy guides, covering multiple video game platforms. It published their first strategy guide in November 1993 and has grown to publish roughly 90-100 guides per year. Competitors include Prima Games and Piggyback Interactive.

The company occasionally offers two different versions of the same guide: one regular and one limited edition (which usually contains bonus items like a CD-ROM soundtrack or separate book containing art from the respective game).

DK Multimedia[link]

During the 1990s, the company published educational videos and a successful range of educational CD-ROMs under the brand DK Multimedia. During the late 1990s CD-ROMs were rebranded as DK Interactive Learning to reflect a changed emphasis toward the educational sector. Following dwindling sales and increasing competition from websites, the company tried to rebrand the digital part of its business as DK Online before opting to sell the UK publishing rights to its CD-ROM backlist in 2000 to an entirely separate company, Global Software Publishing, which is part of the Avanquest Software Group. The DK Online section of the business then transferred into development work on the anglicised version of the Pearson Education (US) KnowledgeBox product.

Kindersley is a town in west central Saskatchewan, Canada, located at Section 10, Township 29, Range 23, West of the 3rd Meridian, along highway 7, a primary highway linking Calgary, Alberta and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It is an established industrial base for the resource-rich west central region of the province and a service center hub to the oil and gas industry and agriculture production.

History[link]

Kindersley is a growing community of almost 5,000 people. It was incorporated in 1910, and named after Sir Robert Kindersley, a major shareholder in the Canadian Northern Railway (later merged into Canadian National Railways). The town is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Kindersley No. 290.

Events[link]

Annual events in Kindersley include the Indoor Rodeo and Trade Show in June and the four-day Goose Festival in September, among numerous sports and cultural activities throughout the rest of the year. Kindersley was chosen as the launch site for the da Vinci Project, Canada's entry to win the Ansari X Prize. The flight was scheduled for October 2004, but circumstances related to the project prevented the flight from taking place. Kindersley is celebrating its 100th birthday in 2010. The official centennial celebrations will take place from July 21–25.

Kindersley has three schools, all operating within the Sun West School Division. Westberry and Elizabeth are K-7 schools and the Kindersley Composite School is 8-12. There is also a regional college at the Great Plains Regional College location.

Sports[link]

Kindersley is home to a full-service 9-hole golf course; two world class, fully irrigated baseball diamonds; a .3 mile, tri-oval speedway and the West Central Events Center (WCEC), currently with one ice surface and a curling rink. The WCEC is home to the local SJHL Klippers hockey team. Part of the WCEC, an older arena called Exhibition Stadium, was destroyed by fire on January 8, 2010.

Kindersley has also hosted many sporting events including the 1984 World Youth Baseball Championships, 1990 Men's Provincial Curling Championship, 1994 Saskatchewan Winter Games, 1997 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships, 2001 Men's Provincial Curling Championships, 2007 Provincial Mixed Curling Championships, 2008 Junior Men's and Women's Provincial Curling Championships, 2009 and 2010 Baseball Canada Cup and the 2010 Provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts (the tournament was moved to Eston because of the fire on January 8, 2010). The arena also hosted Team Canada's World Juniors for the 1991 World Junior Championships in Saskatoon. They used the rink as a practice facility and it was also the venue for a game between Czechoslovakia and Switzerland.

In recent years, Tim Horton's and Wal-Mart have joined Kindersley's diverse business sector. With its population of about 5,000, and with no other major centres nearby, Kindersley is one of the smallest non-suburban communities (in terms of population) in Canada, and the smallest in Saskatchewan, to have its own Wal-Mart. As of 2010, the Wal-Mart is the only department store in the town, as the Zellers location in Kindersley Mall closed down a few years before.

Local media includes The Kindersley Clarion, a weekly newspaper owned by Jamac Publishing Ltd., and two radio stations owned by Golden West Radio: CKVX Mix 104.9 FM and CFYM Classic Hits 1210 AM.

Climate[link]

Kindersley experiences a semi-arid climate (Köppen climate classification BSk). Winters are long, cold and dry, while summers are short and warm. Precipitation is low, with an annual average of 328mm, and is heavily concentrated in the warmer months.

The coldest temperature ever recorded in Kindersley was −43.4° (−46°F) on February 7, 1994. The hottest was 40.0° (104°F) on August 16, 2003.

The record one-day rainfall is 77.2 mm (3 inches) on July 6, 1991. The record one-day snowfall is 21 cm (8.3 inches) on December 27, 1990.

Tourism Saskatchewan's Saskatchewan Discovery Guide 2010 claims a higher current population of 4,966 for the town and the Ministry of Health Covered Population gave Kindersley a population of 5,273 in 2010. However, these stats are in contradiction to the 2011 census data. In Saskatchewan towns may apply for city charters once they exceed 5,000 in population, and Kindersley unsuccessfully applied for such a charter in the early 2000s.

Chris de Burgh (born Christopher John Davison, 15 October 1948) is an Argentinian born British-Irish singer-songwriter. He is most famous for his 1986 love song "The Lady in Red", which reached number-one in Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

Early life[link]

De Burgh was born in Venado Tuerto, Argentina, to Colonel Charles Davison, a British diplomat, and Maeve Emily de Burgh, an Irish secretary.^[1] His father had substantial farming interests, and he spent much of his early years in Malta, Nigeria and Zaire, as he, his mother and brother accompanied Colonel Davison on his diplomatic and engineering work.

The Davisons finally settled in Bargy Castle, County Wexford, a twelfth-century castle in Ireland bought by his maternal grandfather, General Sir Eric de Burgh, a former Chief of the General Staff in India and from a distinguished Hiberno-Norman family. The castle was converted into a hotel where Chris gained much early experience performing to the guests and he later assumed de Burgh as his stage name.^[1]

After attending Marlborough College in Wiltshire, England, de Burgh went on to graduate from Trinity College, Dublin with a Master of Arts degree in French, English and History.

Musical career[link]

Chris de Burgh signed his first contract with A&M Records in 1974, and supported Supertramp on their Crime of the Century tour, building himself a small fan base. His début album, Far Beyond These Castle Walls, was a folk-tinged stab at fantasy in the tradition of the Moody Blues that failed to chart upon its release in February 1975. Five months later, he released a single called "Turning Round" from the album, released outside the UK and Ireland as "Flying". It failed to make an impression in the UK, but it stayed on top of the Brazilian charts for 17 weeks. This became a familiar pattern for the singer/songwriter, as every one of his '70s albums failed to chart in the UK or US while they racked up big sales in European and South American countries. In 1981, he had his first UK chart entry with Best Moves, a collection culled from his early albums. It set the stage for 1982's Rupert Hine produced The Getaway, which reached number 30 in the UK charts and number 43 in the US, thanks to the eerie single "Don't Pay the Ferryman". Chris de Burgh's follow-up album, Man on the Line, also performed well, charting at 69 in the US and 11 in the UK.

Chris de Burgh had an across-the-board success with the ballad "The Lady in Red" in late 1986; the single became a number one hit in the UK (number three in America) and its accompanying album, Into the Light, reached number two in the UK. (number 25 in the U.S.). That Christmas season, a re-release of de Burgh's 1976 Christmas song "A Spaceman Came Travelling" became a Top 40 hit in the UK. Flying Colours, his follow-up to Into the Light, entered the British charts at number one upon its 1988 release, yet it failed to make the American charts. De Burgh never hit the US charts again and his commercial fortunes began to slide slightly in Britain in the early 1990s, yet he retained a following around the world. This is mainly due to inactivity of his previous recording label A&M Records UK division in U.S.^[2]

In 2007, a concert in Tehran was planned for mid-2008, together with local band Arian, which would have made Chris de Burgh the first western pop singer to perform in Iran since the 1979 revolution. However the concert never went ahead because he had not been given permission by the Iranian authorities to perform in the country.^[3]

Personal life[link]

Chris de Burgh has been married to his wife Diane since 1977 and lives in Enniskerry, County Wicklow in Ireland.^[1] They have two sons, Hubie and Michael, and a daughter, Rosanna, who won the Miss World competition in 2003 for Ireland.^[1] He is a distant relative of the 13th-century English nobleman Hubert de Burgh, who features prominently in William Shakespeare's play The Life and Death of King John.^[4] He is an avid Liverpool F.C. supporter as is Rosanna, and they often attend matches at Anfield.

In 1994, he was found to have had an affair with his children's 19-year-old Irish nanny, Maresa Morgan, who was assisting the family while de Burgh's wife Diane was recuperating in the hospital from a broken neck during a horse-riding accident. His daughter Rosanna, a model, indicated during an interview with The Irish Independent that she held little sympathy for Morgan, regarding the latter's portrayal of herself as a victim as "pathetic" and hoped "she pays for her mistake". She forgave her father for his affair.^[5]

De Burgh has pursued and won 16 defamation actions.^[6] The Irish Independent said he has always been a bit prickly about criticism. Peter Crawley, a theatre reviewer at The Irish Times, found this out the hard way when he wrote a less than sympathetic review of de Burgh's show in Dublin's Gaiety Theatre in September 2009. Crawley noted: "He departs the stage for 'Lady in Red', invading boxes and draping himself over audience members ... Certain toes will never uncurl after this experience, but it is almost admirable how unaltered de Burgh has remained by the flow of time." In a lengthy, much-publicised reply to the critic, de Burgh made his feelings known, particularly in the postscript:-

"We were wondering by way of explanation and, as you seem to portray yourself as a bitter and unfulfilled man, were you much teased by your school chums in the schoolyard and called 'Creepy Crawley'?" De Burgh wrote.^[7]

Marcus Wareing (born 1970 in Southport, Lancashire),^[1] is an English chef, currently Chef Patron of "Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley (formerly Pétrus) in Knightsbridge, and previously the Grill Room at the Savoy Hotel on the Strand. In September 2008, Pétrus was controversially voted London's Best Restaurant ahead of Restaurant Gordon Ramsay by food bible Harden's.^[2]

Career[link]

A protégé of Gordon Ramsay, Wareing joined Ramsay's Aubergine in 1993, where he became Sous Chef behind Head Chef Ramsay. After running the Grill Room at the Savoy Hotel on the Strand, Wareing opened and operated Pétrus on behalf of Gordon Ramsay Holdings (GRH) at the Berkeley Hotel. The restaurant was awarded two Michelin stars and five AA Rosettes, while the Savoy Grill achieved its first Michelin star in its 100-plus year history since he took over. In 2004 Marcus Wareing was voted Restaurateur of the Year at the Tatler Restaurant Awards.

Following months of industry rumour, in May 2008 the Berkeley Hotel confirmed that it intended to work directly with Wareing to launch its own restaurant, and he would take on the lease from 19 September 2008.^[3] The new restaurant would later be named Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley and would go on to earn two Michelin stars in its own right which it currently retains.

The split after 15 years with Ramsay and GRH resulted in a bitter legal battle between the three parties, which when resolved resulted in Wareing stating in an interview for Waitrose Food Illustrated magazine that Ramsay was a "sad bastard" whose influence had left him feeling "trapped and constrained."^[4]

The Pétrus name which is owned by GRH is likely to transfer to another restaurant in the group with La Noisette identified as the most likely.^[5]

In 2011 Wareing will open his second restaurant, called The Gilbert Scott, in the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel (the building was designed in 1865 by architect Sir George Gilbert Scott). Originally scheduled to open in April it has now been delayed until May.^[6]

In 2006, Marcus Wareing and Simon Rimmer represented the North of England in the BBC television series Great British Menu.^[7] Wareing beat the Manchester-based chef to go on to the final round. In the final the public chose for him to cook his dessert of egg custard tart with Garibaldi biscuits for the Queen's 80th birthday banquet which was on 17 June 2006. Marcus Wareing is also featured in the television documentary series Boiling Point^[8] and Beyond Boiling Point, documenting his time as Gordon Ramsay's sous chef, his move to Pétrus and the award of his first Michelin star.

James Dale Strawbridge (April 7, 1824 – July 19, 1890) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.

Biography[link]

James D. Strawbridge was born in Liberty Township, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Princeton College in 1844 and from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1847. He was engaged in the practice of medicine at Danville, Pennsylvania. During the American Civil War, Strawbridge entered the Union Army as a brigade surgeon of Volunteers and served throughout the war. He resumed the practice of medicine at Danville.

In 1875, he founded the department store, Strawbridge's. On September 9, 2006, the Strawbridge's nameplate was completely phased out in favor of Macy's.

Strawbridge was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress. After his time in Congress he returned to the practice of medicine. He died in Danville in 1890. Interment in Fairview Cemetery.
