Mathematical Modeling in Material Sciences - Sergio Conti, University of Bonn
Introduction - Mathematical Modeling in Material Sciences
Sergio Conti, University of Bonn, Germany
Formulating models in the language of mathematics has been one of the key ideas leading to the birth of modern science. The mathematical analysis of the models is however a much more recent achievement. This permits for example to relate models on different scales, and to derive reduced models in specific asymptotic regimes. Examples properties of thin interfaces or thin objects, and the derivation of macroscopic limits, such as thermodynamics starting from statistical mechanics. The mathematical analysis leads on one hand to the formulation of improved models, on the other hand to improved understanding of the predictions of existing ones. In this introduction I shall briefly sketch the general strategy in simple contexts; recent research will be discussed in the two following talks.

Aikido Demonstration at the Japan Fair! on Dies Academicus at University of Bonn
The demonstration were given at the 7th December 2011 in front of the aula of the main building university of Bonn. We had no tatami (mats) available and were very carefully to take the ukemi (falling/rolling) part. As usual we didn't rehearse for it to give an authentic flavour to our performance. The uke (those who accept the defeat) are participants of the Hochschulsport of the university of Bonn, namely Christian, Constantin, Florian, Jan, and Johannes. Joann was our creative director.

Plasma in a microwave :: Physishow Uni Bonn
Really cool effects can be easily produced with a microwave! First we put a plate with small lightbulbs into it, and due to the induction currents in the bulb wires these light up. At the end we demonstrate that the same thing works with large lightbulbs. This works as well -- of course! But the part in the middle gives you an idea what a flame really is -- a plasma of ions. These ions, accelerated back and forth by the energetic electromagnetic fields of the microwave, produce a lot of light. The nature of it is similar to northern lights, by the way! *** DO NOT try any of these experiments at home!!! *** 2006/07 Physikshow of the University of Bonn. www.physikshow.uni-bonn.de
