12. The Sovereign State: Hobbes' Leviathan
Introduction to Political Philosophy (PLSC 114) This is an introduction to the political views of Thomas Hobbes, which are often deemed paradoxical. On the one hand, Hobbes is a stern defender of political absolutism. The Hobbesian doctrine of sovereignty dictates complete monopoly of power within a given territory and over all institutions of civilian or ecclesiastical authority. On the other hand, Hobbes insists on the fundamental equality of human beings. He maintains that the state is a contract between individuals, that the sovereign owes his authority to the will of those he governs and is obliged to protect the interests of the governed by assuring civil peace and security. These ideas have been interpreted by some as indicative of liberal opposition to absolutism. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction: Thomas Hobbes 07:28 - Chapter 2. Who Was Hobbes? 14:12 - Chapter 3. 14. The Sovereign State: Hobbes' Leviathan
Introduction to Political Philosophy (PLSC 114) The concept of sovereignty is discussed in Hobbesian terms. For Hobbes, "the sovereign" is an office rather than a person, and can be characterized by what we have come to associate with executive power and executive authority. Hobbes' theories of laws are also addressed and the distinction he makes between "just laws" and "good laws." The lecture ends with a discussion of Hobbes' ideas in the context of the modern state. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction: Hobbes' Theory of Sovereignty 06:00 - Chapter 2. 20 + States Declaring Sovereignty Under the 10th Amendment!!! Pennsylvania State Rep Sam Rohrer
Pennsylvania State Represenative Sam Rohrer on the 10th Amendment...Pennsylvania needs our help! CALL YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVE AND STATE SENATOR!!! The Problem: States Under Seige Most Americans - by simply reading the text - understand the nature of the 10th Amendment. It ensures that any powers not granted to the federal government through the Constitution are reserved to the states and the people. However, through various expansions of federal authority, the government in Washington, DC, has impeded on the powers reserved to the states and the people. This significant transfer of powers from the individual states to the national government came not through revolution, but through ongoing and unchecked encroachments. Now, this federal intrusion on state sovereignty has reached a breaking point. Below are some examples where national government has or could infringe on state sovereignty: * By collecting taxes from state residents and then using that money to compel sovereign state governments - through the use of "strings" attached to federal funding - to implement programs and provide services in accordance with the desires of federal authorities. * By pushing states toward financial distress by providing financial incentives to implement programs and services without supplying adequate federal funding. * By enacting national laws that go far beyond the federal powers enumerated in the US Constitution. * By potentially providing federal funds to fill state budget ...

13. The Sovereign State: Hobbes' Leviathan
Introduction to Political Philosophy (PLSC 114) Hobbes' most famous metaphor, that of "the state of nature," is explained. It can be understood as the condition of human life in the absence of authority or anyone to impose rules, laws, and order. The concept of the individual is also discussed on Hobbesian terms, according to which the fundamental characteristics of the human beings are the capacity to exercise will and the ability to choose. Hobbes, as a moralist, concludes that the laws of nature, or "precepts of reason," forbid us from doing anything destructive in life. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Hobbes on Individuality 09:49 - Chapter 2. International Relations 101: Sovereignty (1.2)
twitter.com (#IR101) Who are the big actors in international relations? The answer is sovereign states, or the entities that have a monopoly on the use of force within their territory. The notion of sovereignty began in 1648 with the Treaty of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years' War. However, states often violate sovereignty. We will see why they can get away with it next time. This video was on the longer side of things. I am going to aim to keep them well under ten minutes for the part.

Part 1/15 | Walled States, Waning Sovereignty: Professor Wendy Brown Keynote Lecture
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, dozens of walls have been erected between and within nation-states. Why? What are these walls doing--materially, performatively, symbolically? What is their relationship to the erosion of state sovereignty? What is the nature of state and popular investments in them, especially when they don't 'work'? Professor Wendy Brown, University of California, Berkeley, explores these questions in a lecture forming part of the keynote lecture series at The Open University's Centre for Citizenship, Identities and Governance. The talk also include responses from Professor Stuart Elden, Department of Geography, Durham University, and Dr Raia Prokhovnik, Director of CCIG's new Bodies Research Programme and a Reader in the Department of Politics and International Studies at The Open University. UN Vote For Palestine "Non-Member State" Reveals Isolation of US, Israel Stance on Statehood
Visit www.democracynow.org to watch more reports on Democracy Now!, an independent, global news hour that airs weekdays on 1100+ TV and radio stations. The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly voted recognize the sovereign state of Palestine, upgrading its observer status from "entity" to "non-member state." The move is viewed as a victory for Palestinians, but a diplomatic setback for the United States and Israel, who were joined by only a handful of countries in opposing the decision. With more than 190 members in the General Assembly, there were 138 votes in favor, nine against and 41 abstentions. Three countries did not take part. The vote came on the 65th anniversary of the adoption of UN Resolution 181 that partitioned Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states. "This was a referendum on the United States' mediation of the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians," says Yousef Munayyer, executive director of The Jerusalem Fund and its educational program, The Palestine Center. "The vast majority of the world, I think said yesterday, that that has failed and it's time for different approach." Africa: States of independence - the scramble for Africa
Seventeen African nations gained their independence in 1960, but the dreams of the independence era were short-lived. Africa states of independence tells the story of some of those countries - stories of mass exploitation, of the ecstasy of independence and of how - with liberation - a new, covert scramble for resources was born. The Importance of Our Church Covenant
A mere two months after the Los Angeles Dodgers inked a new, two–year, $45 million guaranteed deal with power hitter Manny Ramirez, the slugger got hit with a 50–game suspension for using a banned performance–enhancing substance. The reason, a “Behavior” clause written into his contract. The 50 game suspension will save the Dodgers 8 million dollars.
Earlier this year Kellogg’s backed out of an endorsement deal with Michael Phelps because of a “Behavior Clause” they had written into the contract. You know them as “Morality Clauses”, but because of changing morals, they have become specific “behavior” clauses.
There was once a time when an advertiser could get an agent to agree to the following clause: “If [Celebrity] has committed any act that offends the community or any segment thereof and/or public morals and decency, such behavior shall be considered a material breach of this Agreement incapable of cure, and if in [Advertiser’s] sole judgment such breach is likely to cause a diminution in the value of the [Advertiser’s] commercial association with [Celebrity], then [Advertiser] shall have the right, in addition to any other rights [Advertiser] may have as a result of such breach, to immediately terminate this Agreement on written notice to [Celebrity]. In such event, there shall be no further compensation payable to [Celebrity] and such termination shall not limit or effect any other rights [Advertiser] may have against [Celebrity] under this Agreement on account of such termination.”
However, society’s views of morality have changed, so contracts have gotten to be very specific as regards the “behavior” of the celebrities. With Michael Phelps, public drug use was clearly prohibited.
These behavior clauses have even entered the world o Big Banks. The latest banking crisis underscored the importance of not appearing greedy in the face of massive government bailouts at taxpayer expense. The government refused to give “Bailout Funds” unless certain behavior standards were met. Corporate executives lost their jobs and had their pay cut because of lavish extravaganza’s and exorbitant bonuses while Americans saw Billions of dollars in savings wiped out.
In the sports world, in the corporate world, in the banking world, how we behave and act is very important, so important that people lose millions when they fail to live up to certain standards.
Even in the church, our behavior is important. George Barna has become well-known because of the extensive research and surveys he conducts. He has noticed some alarming trends in the church, particularly in regards to our “Biblical World view”. A Survey published in March of this year produced these results:
For the purposes of the survey, a “biblical worldview” was defined as believing that absolute moral truth exists; the Bible is totally accurate in all of the principles it teaches; Satan is considered to be a real being or force, not merely symbolic; a person cannot earn their way into Heaven by trying to be good or do good works; Jesus Christ lived a sinless life on earth; and God is the all-knowing, all-powerful creator of the world who still rules the universe today. In the research, anyone who held all of those beliefs was said to have a biblical worldview.
The same questions were asked of respondents in national surveys by Barna in 1995, 2000 and 2005. The results indicate that the percentage of adults with a biblical worldview, as defined above, has remained unchanged for more than a decade. The numbers show that 7% had such a worldview in 1995, compared to 10% in 2000, 11% in 2005, and 9% now. Even among born again adults, the statistics have remained flat: 18% in 1995, 22% in 2000, 21% in 2005, and 19% today.
Varying numbers of Americans embrace the different aspects of biblical worldview thinking. The survey found that:
* One-third of all adults (34%) believe that moral truth is absolute and unaffected by the circumstances. Slightly less than half of the born again adults (46%) believe in absolute moral truth.
* Half of all adults firmly believe that the Bible is accurate in all the principles it teaches. That proportion includes the four-fifths of born again adults (79%) who concur.
* Just one-quarter of adults (27%) are convinced that Satan is a real force. Even a minority of born again adults (40%) adopt that perspective.
* Similarly, only one-quarter of adults (28%) believe that it is impossible for someone to earn their way into Heaven through good behavior. Not quite half of all born again Christians (47%) strongly reject the notion of earning salvation through their deeds.
* A minority of American adults (40%) are persuaded that Jesus Christ lived a sinless life while He was on earth. Slightly less than two-thirds of the born again segment (62%) strongly believes that He was sinless.
* Seven out of ten adults (70%) say that God is the all-powerful, all-knowing creator of

European Day of Action against Capitalism
March 31st, 2012 | http://march31.net
Europe is in a continuous state of upheaval. For months now, its credit- and sovereign debt crises have been escalating. A number of hectic European Union (EU) summits have introduced emergency measures to rescue capitalism. Should these measures fail, governments and the media assure us, collapse, recession and mass poverty would be the result. This apocalyptic rhetoric paves the way for even more neoliberal reforms whose social impact will be felt for decades to come – if we don‘t resist. Throughout the crisis, we were told that capitalism needed to be reined in, and that banks and corporations would have to carry some of the burden they, too, had created. What is happening now is the exact opposite: The EU, its member states and other European countries are intensifying competition and introducing devastating public austerity programmes to secure private profits. In doing so, however, they are reproducing the destructive logic of capitalism. The existence of crises, widespread powerlessness and poverty, contrasted by private, i.e. exclusive wealth, are inherent elements of capitalism. Let’s get organized for a better society!

Grace and Mommy Mess-Ups
A mommy was out walking with her 4 year old daughter. She picked up something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth. The cautious Mom took the item away from her and asked her not to do that.
"Why?" her daughter asked.
"Because it's been on the ground, you don't know where it's been, it's dirty and probably has germs"
Her daughter looked up at her Mom with total admiration and asked, "Mommy, how do you know all this stuff? You are so smart."
The Mom quickly replied: "All moms know this stuff. It's on the Mommy Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mommy."
They walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, and the little girl seemed deep in thought.
"OH...I get it!" she beamed, "So if you don't pass the test you have to be the daddy."
"Exactly" the mommy replied back with a big smile on my face.
Actually, there is no test to become a Mom, but even brief rundown of some of the job descriptions of a Mom are overwhelming:
Dentist, Taxi driver, Doctor/Surgeon (stuffed animals), Lawyer, Policewoman, Coroner- (for pets), Coach, Teacher, Cook (apple jacks)/Chef (macaroni and cheese), Laundress, Dishwasher, Maid, Nurse - until we get our MD which happens after kid #2, Personal dresser, Personal shopper, Personal assistant, Secretary, Rocking chair, Singer, Artist, Diaper changer, Seamstress, Groomer, Cheerleader, Plumber, Counselor, Tissue (Mom's clothes work better) Food taster, Tickler and Pudding lid licker.
With all these responsibilities, is it any wonder that Mom's mess up from time to time? Sometimes Mom's flunk the Mommy Test!
Lydia and I were in Archie last year playing golf at Blackberry Trails. We were on the fourth hole when we get a frantic call from our fifth child, Lindsey. She was headed out to the garage to go shopping with our 8th grandchild, Laila. Laila was just seven months old. She had her in her seat that snaps into the pedestal in the car. She forgot to get something, so she sets the seat on the counter top, and goes up to her bedroom. She hears a horrid sounding "crash" and Laila lets out this blood-curdling scream. She runs downstairs to see Laila lying face down on their hard tile flor, with the baby-seat on top of her. She picks her up and sees a huge bruise and knot forming on her forehead.
When Lydia got the call, she was frantic as well. She immediately left and met Lindsey at the hospital.
Lindsey had one of those Mommy Mess-Up moments. She just didn't think that a seven month old could wiggle and kick that much. Lindsey had her first experience with "mommy guilt', but praise God, Laila was fine. It seems that God designed little babies with "mess-up's" in mind. Their little head bones are still forming and can take an accidental fall very well.
An important aspect of being a Mom is learning how to deal with "Mommy Mess-up's!
Ali Landry is an actress, model, ABC's Superstars celebrity participant, and founder of children's clothing line Belle Parish, and became mom to Estela in 2007.
"As a mom, I almost always feel guilty. I think it's just part of being a mom, never feeling like you have enough time for the kids, your husband, yourself! It's a daily struggle to be the best wife, mother, daughter etc. I can be. There just aren't enough hours in the day."
Now that my daughter's a little older (2-1/2), I'm no longer so germ phobic. I no longer feel like I need to clean off everything that falls on the ground before she sticks it back in her mouth. A few germs are good for kids!"
If a few germs are good for kid's are "mess-ups good for Mom's?
Wiktionary defines "mess up" as:
To make a mess of; to untidy, disorder, soil, or muss. "The afternoon breeze messed up my hair."
To cause a problem with; to introduce an error or mistake in; to make muddled or confused; spoil; ruin. "The change messed something up, and it's not working anymore."
To botch, bungle; to perform poorly on. "Well, I messed up my solo, but otherwise it was a good concert."
To make a mistake; to do something incorrectly; to perform poorly. "He has a hard time getting started because he's afraid he'll mess up."
To cause (another person) to make unwanted mistakes in a given task, usually through distraction or obnoxious behavior. "Stop bumping me! You keep messing me up!"
To damage; injure. "He messed up his elbow at the track meet."
To discombobulate, utterly confuse, or confound psychologically; to throw into a state of mental disarray. "That girl totally messed me up, man. I'm not sure who I am anymore."
Mom's learn that messes are a fact of Motherhood:
The morning starts off with spilled milk and sticky crumbs on the kitchen floor, progresses to tomato juice dumped on the carpet, includes a stopped-up sink and a visit to the emergency room, and finishes up with the dog meeting a skunk. Throw in a call from your husband telling you he's bringing company home for dinner -- "just something casual, hon."
As one mom wrote:
Sometimes we really mess up

Anthem of Principality of Sealand
The Principality of Sealand is a micronation located on HM Fort Roughs, a former World War II Maunsell Sea Fort in the North Sea 10 km (six miles) off the coast of Suffolk, England, United Kingdom. Since 1967, the facility has been occupied by former radio broadcaster and British Army Major Paddy Roy Bates, his associates and family, who claim that it is an independent sovereign state. External commentators generally classify Sealand as a micronation. It has been described as the world's best-known micronation. Sealand is not recognized as a sovereign state by any United Nations member, and critics, citing court rulings in the United States and in Germany, have asserted that Roughs Tower has always remained under the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom. Africa ... States of Independence - Senegal
Senegal, a country on Western-most edge of the African continent with a predominantly Muslim nation of 12 million, has a fully functioning democracy, and has largely escaped incidents of separatist violence that have hampered the progress of several of its neighbours. But Senegal is not without its problems. Its economy has recently faltered, due in part to the relative scarcity of natural resources, and there are suggestions that its cherished tradition of democracy is under threat, with the president allegedly grooming his son to succeed him.
