Midland Railway Centre 'Vintage Weekend' 27.08.2011
Over the weekend of the 27th, 28th and 29th August 2011, the Midland Railway Centre held it's popular annual 'Vintage Weekend' event. Filmed on the 27th August. This video features visiting locomotive, NER Class J72, No. 69023 'Joem' (visiting from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway). It's seen hauling the vintage set on the 3.5 mile stretch. The first views are taken near the Country Park near Riddings as 'Joem' hauls the first train of the day from Butterley to Riddings. Next, we move to the road bridge near Butterley Station where we see 'Joem' enter the station from the Hammersmith Station direction. Then we see the train return from Swanwick Junction, passing the signalbox on the left and works on the right before entering Butterley Station. The last views give some panoramic shots of 'Joem' heading over the stone embankment crossing over Butterley Reservoir and the engine running round it's train at Hammersmith Station.

Midland Railway, July 4
Whilst staying on a conference weekend at the Hayes, Swanwick, Derbyshire, the opportunity arose to visit the nearby Midland Railway at Butterley. BR 'Caprotti' 5MT 4-6-0 73129 (the only one of its class remaining with the Caprotti Valve Gear) was operating the 4 trains on the railway's Timetable A. In this video, with clips taken on the saturday of the weekend, we see the Standard arrive at Swanwick with the return leg of the 3rd train of the day from Riddings, and departs for Butterley. We head up to the West Shed, home of the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust, owners of BR Standard 4MT 2-6-4Ts 80080/98, LMS Princess Royal Pacific 46203 'Princess Margaret Rose', and popular LMS Princess Coronation (Duchess) Pacific 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland', seen outside the shed with its support coach. Having been shunted into the shed by a Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0 Diesel, we see the shunter head off road 2 where it had just positioned the support coach, ready to head into road 4 where it would spend the night. The Standard then arrives with the final train of the day for Riddings, and departs (seen from platform 2 which is currently not in public service) and then returns, giving a great whistle on the departure. If you are in the area I strongly reccomend paying a visit to the line

Midland Railway Centre Diesel Shunters Gala - 27th June 2010.
Midland Railway Centre - Diesel Shunters Gala . Sunday 27th June 2010. Loco's featured: 08331 & 08590 "Red Lion", plus some photos of 14901. A stroke of bad luck today at the Midland Railway Centre. I went for the Diesel Shunters Gala, and when I got there, the timetable stated 20048 in place of 14901, no 687 or 416 & no freight train. 08590 & 08331 were coupled up ready with the first train. While riding the train, I was told that 14901 had failed the previous day with fuel pump problems and was unlikely to be out. 20048 was due to substitute for it, but it wouldn't start, so the second train never ran at all, with 08590 running solo or pairing up with 08331 (08331 couldn't be put onto the second rake of coaches as it is air braked only, and the coaches are vacuum braked only). Nonetheless, I had a couple of rides with the 08's and got some footage. Included are 2 departures from Butterley for Riddings, a crossing of Butterley Reservoir from Butterley Station car park & on the train, and a departure from Swanwick for Hammersmith.

Midland Railway Centre: 60's Gala 140712
All credit to the Midland Railway who put on a brilliant show of railway operations which ran as smoothly as silk. Special thanks to the Railway's "Renaissance Man', Stephen (he does a bit of everything), for allowing Clive and myself into his hallowed domain at Butterley Box. Locomotives in action were Coronation Pacific 46233 Duchess of Sutherland, Standard 5 73129, Jinty 47327, D1501 and D8048. On view were passenger trains, a goods train of substantial length and a parcels train.

Midland Railway Vintage Train Event 220809
The Vintage Train event featured guest locomotive, 0-6-0 saddle tank Sir Berkeley from the Middleton Railway. Built by Leeds based Manning and Wardle & Co in 1890 the small engine was surprisingly powerful, hauling the vintage train for the whole day, although some emergency spanner work was necessary to address a minor injector problem. Accompanying the old engine was Standard 5 73129, with its 'state of the art' Caprotti valve gear.

Midland Railway Centre 'Ivor the Engine' Weekend. 25th Apr 2010
My first trip in along time to the Midland Railway Centre in Derbyshire turned out to be, rather disapointingly, an Ivor the Enigne Weekend. Last year it was Thomas the Tank Engine, could this be the year of Ivor? Anyway, there were only two Locos running: -0-4-0ST 'Ivor' -Class 45 No.45 133 It turned out to be a rather diasppointing event seeing only one engine that could have been in steam, the other being at the Battlefield Line Railway masquerading as 'Thomas' (more from that in the next video). There was also no Duchess of Sutherland, that being at Crewe for the previous days railtour. Typical, it's probably just me! Well. I can certainly say I'll be back for a more 'real' event like I remember it!
