Aruba/Lesser Antilles
Lesser Antilles.Aruba, which has no administrative subdivisions, is one of the three countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands, together with the Netherlands and the Netherlands Antilles. Aruban citizens hold Dutch passports. Unlike much of the Caribbean region, Aruba has a dry climate and an arid, cactus-strewn landscape. This climate has helped tourism as visitors to the island can reliably expect warm, sunny weather. It has a land area of 193 square kilometres (75 sq mi) and lies outside the hurricane belt.Aruba's first inhabitants are thought to have been Caquetíos Amerinds from the Arawak tribe, who migrated there from Venezuela to escape attacks by the Caribs. Fragments of the earliest known Indian settlements date back from 1000 AD. Sea currents made canoe travel to other Caribbean islands difficult, thus Caquetio culture remained closer to that of mainland South America. The capital Oranjestad Europeans first learned of Aruba when Amerigo Vespucci and Alonso de Ojeda happened upon it in August 1499.[1] Vespucci, in one of his four letters to Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici, described his voyage to the islands along the coast of Venezuela. He wrote about an island where most trees are of brazil wood and, from this island, he went to one ten leagues away, where they had houses built as in Venice. In another letter he described a small island inhabited by very large people, which the expedition thought was not inhabited.Aruba was colonized by Spain for ...

Birds & More: Lesser Antilles
This was an air trip to see most of the endemic birds in the Lesser Antilles. We were quite successful and saw much more besides in these beautiful islands. We visited 9 islands and I was most impressed at the differences between them, largely depending on who were their Colonial masters and the decisions made by the islanders when the Colonials departed; 3/2005

Tropical Storm Rafael "Hurricane Central"
Hurricane Central Hurricane Rafael has formed in the eastern Caribbean near the Lesser Antilles. Rafael will bring heavy rain and gusty winds to the Lesser Antilles through the weekend. Rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches with locally as much as 10 inches could trigger flash flooding and mudslides. The storm will pass near or over the Virgin Islands Saturday into Saturday night and eventually accelerate northward. Rafael will then pass near Bermuda on Tuesday. This path will prevent Rafael from affecting the United States directly. Tropical storm warnings have been issued for portions of the Lesser Antilles, including the Virgin Islands. A tropical storm watch has been issued for Puerto Rico.

Aruba
Recorded February 21, 2008. Aruba is a 21 mile-long island of the Lesser Antilles in the southern Caribbean Sea, 17 miles north of the Paraguaná Peninsula, Venezuela. Together with Bonaire and Curaçao it forms a group referred to as the ABC islands of the Leeward Antilles, the southern island chain of the Lesser Antilles. Aruba has a population around 105000 and a land area of 75 square miles. Oranjestad, with a population of 32748 is the capital and most important city of Aruba located on the southern coast near the western end of the island. This video begins as we sail into the harbour on the Crown Princess. After disembarking the ship I take a submarine cruise and visit the hotel area at Palm Beach. I visit the northern most point on the island at the California Lighthouse. I get a nice view of the island from the rock formation Casibari. I also witness the pounding surf on the east coast of the island. The video concludes as I walk around Oranjestad, the capital and largest city on the island. From: timvp.com
