Fashion journalism is an umbrella term used to describe all aspects of published fashion media. It includes fashion writers, fashion critics or fashion reporters. The most obvious examples of fashion journalism are the fashion features in magazines and newspapers, but the term also includes books about fashion, fashion related reports on television as well as online fashion magazines^[1], websites and blogs. Since pieces more often than not deal with "tendencies" and "trends", which are subjective by nature, and due to a sometimes tenuous relation with facts, the term "journalism" is used as a moniker, but does not carry the overall procedural and deontological aspects of professional journalism.

The work of a fashion journalist can be quite varied. Typical work includes writing or editing articles, or helping to formulate and style a fashion shoot. A fashion journalist typically spends a lot of time researching and/or conducting interviews and it is essential that he or she has good contacts with people in the fashion industry, including photographers, designers, and public relations specialists.

Fashion journalists are either employed full time by a publication or are employed on a freelance basis.

The career has grown in importance in other media with the release of films such as The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009) and The September Issue (2009), and television series such as Ugly Betty (2006–10).

Fashion journalism and the internet[link]

About half a year subsequent to pioneer fashion resource named Fashion Net's launch at the outset of 1995 came American Fashionmall and French ELLE. Fashion Live produced Internet's first live fashion webcast of Yves Saint Laurent's runway show in 1996. CNN Style and Hint Magazine arrived in 1998. The following year saw the rise and fall of Boo.com as the company burned through $135 million in 18 months.^[2] Style.com, the online umbrella for Vogue and W, started in 2000. Style.com is not a journalistic website but a resource to show the complete collections of selected fashion shows (among the most notorious brands) each season. Following a tiff in 2007, W left Style.com making it the online home for Vogue alone. In the late 2000, Beauty Flow magazine flourished with exclusive content for editorials, portraits and reports.

Today, fashion blogs, and other such fashion portals such as http://www.fashionhippo.com, http://coutureinthecity.com, http://glamour.com, and http://ifashionnetwork.com, are an increasing force in the fashion industry. Against this trend in August 2006 Westfield Group the world's largest mall and shopping centre owner has unveiled a Webzine titled What's What identifying popular fashion trends with a view to indirectly promote the products available in their tenants stores. The financial funding for such an undertaking is unique as it does not rely on subscriptions or advertising but entirely on advertorials.

Hilary Alexander (born in New Zealand) is a British journalist and the Fashion Director of The Daily Telegraph.

Alexander was born in New Zealand and is a passionate traveller, long distance walker, gardener and cat-lover. In May 2001, she was awarded the title Visiting Professor by the University of the Arts London (the former London Institute) which is responsible for the fashion colleges, Central Saint Martins and London College of Fashion and the Chelsea and Camberwell Art colleges.

She has extensive broadcast experience that includes three years on BBC 2’s Style Challenge, appearances on GMTV, Lorraine Kelly, BBC Breakfast and various documentaries for BBC1, BBC2 and Channel 4. She has also appeared in national channels in Germany, France, Spain, Russia and China; The Weakest Link and Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two (BBC); and is often interviewed for some fashion cable channels including Fashion File, Fashion TV and Video Fashion as well as for some radio stations. She was a New York fashion designer in the 80’s, a costume designer for movies and worked as the woman's fashion editor for Joyce magazine, and as a fashion editor for Elle.com and Vogue.fr. Nowadays she is the creator of her blog A Shaded View on Fashion (ASVOF) and the Founder and Director of a fashion film festival, A Shaded View on Fashion Film (ASVOFF). Diane Pernet’s first degree was in documentary filmmaking at Temple University^[1] and she has been making small low-fi movies for years. She also worked as a costume designer for, amongst others, director Amos Gitai.^[2]

Designer in the 80’s of her own cult brand in New York for 13 years, Diane Pernet moved to Paris two decades ago and left the backstage behind to begin a career reporting on fashion. Her first job in Paris was as a costume designer for Amos Gitai's 1992 film Golem l'Esprit d'Exile. Work for the CBC’s Fashion Files programme led to an appointment at Joyce magazine where she was the woman's fashion editor for five years. At Elle.com, she was reincarnated as “Dr. Diane” dishing out style advice and for Vogue.fr she rated the runways.^[3]

A Shaded View on Fashion was one of the first fashion blogs and was created in February 2005. Anina.net of 360 fashion introduced Diane Pernet to life blogging with the use of a Nokia mobile phone using instantaneous broadcasting techniques.^[4] Later on she realized that posting pictures, texts and other media with her mobile phone wasn’t only extremely expensive, but that the quality of the footage wasn’t high enough. Since then she travels around the world with her Samsung NX10 camera and uses her computer to update the ASVOF blog with high quality fashion content.

One of the most important moments for ASVOF was in September 2008, when Mark Eley of Eley Kishimoto commissioned her to make a road movie of the brand's men's wear launch and as well as making a documentary film she life-blogged the entire journey from London to Monte Carlo. This film was the impulse behind the launch of Diane's first fashion film festival 'You Wear it Well" which she co-curated with her LA correspondent and was launched in Los Angeles at CineSpace in 2006. In 2008 founded and curated A Shaded View On Fashion Film (ASVOFF) a traveling international event built upon a competition of short fashion, style and beauty films. For its Paris launch, ASVOFF took the form of a full festival showcasing feature films, documentaries, conferences, performances and installations - making it a fashion calendar must-see.^[5]

Other projects of Diane Pernet included being a talent scout for the Hyères Festival^[6] from 2002-2011, she was the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Zoo Magazine (Germany) from 2007- April 2012 and since April 12, 2012, Pernet has been the Fashion Editor at Ninja, a fashion, art and photography magazine that is printed in French and English.

Kors was born Karl Anderson, Jr.^[3] on Long Island, New York, the son of Joan Hamburger, a former model, and her first husband, Karl Anderson, a college student.^[4][5] When his mother remarried when he was five, he was told he could change his name, and he chose to become Michael David Kors.^[6] He grew up in Merrick, New York and graduated from John F. Michael Kors began designing clothes at the age of 19 and studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.^[10] In 1981, Kors launched the Michael Kors womenswear line at Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Building on his success, Kors was named the first ever women's ready-to-wear designer and creative director for the French fashion house Celine in 1997. In his tenure at Celine, Kors turned the fashion house around with blockbuster accessories and a critically acclaimed ready-to-wear line. Kors left Celine in October 2003 to concentrate on his own brand. Kors launched his menswear line in 2002.

In addition to the Michael Kors runway collection, the MICHAEL Michael Kors and KORS Michael Kors lines were launched in 2004. KORS is considered the mid-tier line, between the runway and MICHAEL collections. The MICHAEL line includes women's handbags and shoes as well as women's ready-to-wear apparel. In addition, Jennifer Garner wore a custom creation as an Academy Award presenter in 2006. As Creative Director of Celine, Michael Kors designed many outfits for actresses to wear on screen. Gwyneth Paltrow wore Kors' designs in the movie Possession. Cate Blanchett also wore his clothes in the movie Bandits. In addition, he outfitted Rene Russo's character in the 1999 hit remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. Elissa wore his dress in the World Music Awards 2005. The ad campaigns for Michael Kors often reflects the jet-set sportswear that Kors fans are fond of.
