Syrian official denies protest casualties and arrest of journalist
Reem Haddad, a spokesperson for the Syrian information ministry, in a phone interview with Al Jazeera over the rolling nationwide protests. She denied knowledge of the deaths reported during on Friday, as thousands of protesters took to the streets across Syria to protest against the government, in what they dubbed a "day of defiance". She said the UN delegation which will be visiting Syria to investigate allegations would be a positive thing for the government. "The Syrian government is not worried, because there is nothing wrong," the spokesperson said. "Syria is a mosaic, it is made of many different sects living together, in harmony." She denied any knowledge of the arrest of Riad Seif, a member of parliament and leading opposition activist. Haddad said that she knew nothing about the detention of Al Jazeera journalist, Dorothy Parvaz. "I have no idea whether Dorothy Parvaz is being held in Syria," she said, refusing to comment on the confirmation Al Jazeera received earlier this week from Syrian officials, who informed the news organisation that the journalist had been arrested.

Opposition groups in talks to form united front
Members of the Syrian National Council and various opposition factions are meeting in Doha, Qatar on a proposed plan that would form an alternative to President Bashar Al Assad's government. But despite this show of unity, deep divisions remain. They came and they talked. On the agenda, the Syrian National Initiative, a US backed proposal that would bring together politicians in exile with rebel army groups operating inside Syria. The figure behind the unity plan is this man, Riyad Seif, as he outlined his vision. Riyad Seif, former member of Syrian Parliament, said, "To create a leadership, a political leadership, for let's say most Syrians would be satisfied with it and then to get the recognition from the international society to be recognized as representative as the only representative of the Syrians." But the very groups Seif is hoping to bring together remain divided. Dr. Radwan Ziadeh, member of Syrian National Council, said, "Riad Seif said that these people that are inside the room should elect a government in exile, but we don't think that those are representing all the Syrian people. This is why a national conference should be held in Syria representing all the groups that will be the venue to choose or elect a new government." As part of the unity plan--22 of the 60 seats would go to the Syrian National Council--the dominant opposition bloc. A deal reached only after some members voiced concern the SNC's powers would be diluted in a new grouping. Others say ...

Syria refugees want opposition to unite
www.euronews.com The new head of the Syrian National Council George Sabra is continuing talks on uniting the country's different opposition groups. A major stumbling block as talks take place in Doha is the possibility of the SNC losing influence within a larger bloc of opposition. The current plan would see the SNC get about a third of 60 seats in the group meant to appoint a 10-member transitional government. Speaking about the search for a deal with other opposition groups, Sabra said: "We are studying the initiative. We also have our proposals for a new initiative between us and them, which we will discuss while we are meeting." The current plan was put together by another veteran dissident, Riad Seif, believed to be preferred by Washington, but agreement may be a long way off. "Optimism appears to be waning and it seems that discussions here in Doha might be prolonged unless a sudden development prompts a breakthrough, increasing international and Arab pressure," said euronews correspondent in Doha Maha Barada. The opposition forming one coherent body is also the desire of some of the estimated 408000 Syrian refugees who have fled the violence. "Sabra should learn from the mistakes of previous leaders. The gap between the Syrian National Council and the people should be closed. Our priority is to stop Syrian people being killed. The opposition should unite," said Abdulrahman Mostafa from Yayladagi refugee camp in neighbouring Turkey. "Our problem is huge. We want him ...

Syria Opposition Groups Strike Unity Deal
Syria's opposition groups agree to a broad, inclusive coalition to overthrow President Assad. Full story: Syrian opposition leaders struck a hard-won deal on Sunday under intense international pressure to form a broad-based coalition to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad. Delegates at the meeting in Qatar say the new coalition will ensure a voice for religious and ethnic minorities, as well as the rebels fighting on the ground. Minorities in Syria have so far largely backed the authorities, fearing the consequences of a Sunni majority takeover. Also, the rise of extremism and sectarian violence in Syria has raised concerns that arms and funding are not reaching the intended people in the conflict. It is hope that the new coalition will help solve these problems. The new group is called the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces, and will be led by Mouaz al-Khatib. Khatib is an Islamist moderate who has previously made speeches together with Christians and Alawites. The deputies are Riad Seif, who proposed the initiative, and Suhair al-Atassi, a female activist. The new body will seek to become the sole address for military and humanitarian aid to Syria, The Qatari Prime Minister spoke at the meeting: [ "Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim", "Qatar's Prime Minister"]: "I assure you that your brothers in the Arab League and in the Gulf Countries Council and your brothers in Turkey are all taking responsibility and we all have duties towards you -- you ...

BREAKING: Raids, Blasts, Fighting Rages Across Syria as Syria Opposition Meets
Syrian warplanes hit targets around Damascus and a blast shook the heart of the capital yesterday, state media and a watchdog said, as the main opposition gathered in Qatar under US pressure for a makeover. Security forces fanned out across northwestern parts of Damascus and roads were cut after fierce battles at dawn between rebels and troops near a political intelligence office, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. As the fighting raged, warplanes carried out three raids on the Ghuta region that lies about 50 kilometers (30 miles) northeast of the capital, the Britain-based watchdog said. State media meanwhile reported that a blast shook the area near the Dama Rose hotel in the heart of Damascus yesterday morning, wounding seven civilians. It blamed the explosion on "terrorists" — the regime's term for armed rebels. The area is close to several security centers and Syrian military headquarters. The fresh fighting comes a day after 194 people were killed in bombings, shellings and clashes across the country, according to an Observatory toll. The escalating conflict and ever-rising death toll added urgency to a meeting of the opposition Syrian National Council in the Qatari capital Doha, with the United States reportedly pressing for a new umbrella organization to unite the country's fractured regime opponents. According to the reports, which emerged after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton charged that the SNC was not representative, long-time dissident Riad ...
