Lake Baikal - Russia
Oct 1995 Lake Baikal is large enough to supply the world with fresh water for half a century and is one of the few remaining jewels in the Soviet crown. The only practical way to get around Baikal is by boat, in weather conditions which can alter dramatically from hour to hour. The lake is more hospitable to its 100000 freshwater seal population. We find a seal sick bay where the weaker animals languish on a rock. A small seal, with too many wrinkles on his neck, looks unwell and underfed. Many are dying from pollution, poaching and entanglement in fishing nets. Baikal's largest island, Olkhon, boasts a fishing industry and plenty of rain. It is also developing a thriving tourist trade. But as heavy industries pump waste into the lake, the greatest human impact on the lake is pollution. The biggest offender is a Cellulose Plant. A local environmental group complains that the lake's waste treatment centre is often closed. As tourism develops in its haphazard way, there is new pressure for legislation to regulate local industry. But in Russia, money speaks louder than law, and the future of the lake depends more upon good luck than good management. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Russia: Lake Baikal - the "Pearl of Siberia"
The border between Siberian Russia and Mongolia is a natural divide with rugged hills and mountains to the north covered in a seemingly endless forest; the Russian Taiga. And to the south, the rolling grasslands of Mongolia. About half-way along this border, set in a gigantic stone bowl nearly 636 km long and almost 80 km wide, lies one quarter of all the the fresh water to be found on earth, - Lake Baikal also known as "The Pearl of Siberia" .

Russia's endangered Lake Baikal - 29 Jul 08
Two women have dedicated their lives to protecting Russia's Lake Baikal, their research proves that the lake is warming at a rate three times faster than the air. Their mission is to find new life forms and preserve existing ones. Located in south west Siberia, the lake contains 20 percent of the Earth's fresh water and is being severely affected by global warming. Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull reports.

75 Lake Baikal · Siberia, Russia
. Lake Baikal · Siberia, Russia The Oldest and Deepest Lake in the World Lake Baikal in southern Siberia is the worlds deepest lake, and the largest freshwater one by volume. It contains more water than all of North Americas Great Lakes combined, equivalent to 20% of the worlds surface fresh water. Baikal is also the oldest lake in the world, possibly dating back more than 25 million years. Being completely hidden behind mountains, very little was known about this immense body of water until the Trans-Siberian railway was built between 1896 and 1902, encircling the lake. Due to its age and isolation, Lake Baikal contains some of the most extraordinary flora and fauna in the world. This is of great value to evolutionary science and has given rise to the lakes nickname, The Galapagos of Russia. Baikal is home to nearly 2000 plant and animal species found nowhere else on the planet, including the Baikal freshwater seal, or nerpa. Lake Baikal was formed as the Earths crust pulled apart in a gigantic rift valley in the Siberian plateau. The rift is still active and widens by about two centimetres a year, continuously expanding the lake. For a long time, Lake Baikal was believed to be unaffected by human activities, thanks to its unique self-cleansing ecosystem whereby the endemic zooplankton Epischura baicalensis suck particles of toxic waste out of the lake and clean the water. However, studies have now shown that the Epischura do not neutralise contamination after all but ...

Baikal Lake
The word "Baikal" comes from the Turkic language and originally means "a wealthy lake". It is wealthy indeed, as its 1640 meters depth it is the deepest and largest lake on our planet. It is also one of the cleanest ones as its transparent water is richly saturated with oxygen. It is also the most ancient lake on the planet - the age of Baikal is estimated at 25 million years. At the same time Baikal is one of those rare spots on the earth where nature has still remained genuine and untouched. The magnificent landscapes -- the lake is surrounded by high mountain chains - and the unique clarity of the water made lake Baikal famous as one of the biggest nature wonders of the world. The Siberian forests - dense taiga and sparse tundra - are bordered here with the Asian semi-deserts and stony steppes. This mixture has contributed to the unique flora and fauna world of the lake: you can find here more than 2600 animal species and 1 thousand plants, 85% of which exist only at Baikal.

The Bullet Train to Lake Baikal -- A Xiaoyu Expedition
An expedition to Lake Baikal. The fast way! We traverse the Ural Mountains by way of elegant traps and combos from Ling Xiaoyu in Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion. First, a brief introduction from the exhibitor, Lingmassacre. Something Hitchcock or Rod Serling might approve of. Then, five minutes of seat-of-your-pants action! And even a little extra at the end. Background Music: Lev Zabeginsky performing, "Two Step/ Blue Balloon/ Kazachok", "Lara's Theme", and "Kalinka" All combos are performed without the aid of configured buttons or programmable controller.
