Perception - The reality beyond matter
Science is a story written by installments over time, and since so much information gets updated these days, I one day found myself wondering... What is "reality"? Is matter all that is real? One thing is for sure - change. That might seem like a silly question given how we use our senses to interact with 'reality' everyday, but I have since arrived at ideas which I am comfortable with regarding these questions (although Im still curious). So heres some questions to play with - play nicely :-) If I had to point to where my idea or concept of reality is maintained, Id be pointing to my head - how about you? Is all this environmental information just vibrational energies which are presented to our body and then decoded to form a perception in the brain according to our programs and patterns? ie: Do we subconsciously 'read' or filter this data then build an experience that seems real? Can I get outside of my experience to prove anything is fact or real, or is reality bound to ones experience like the fabric to the shirt? What of the realities I have when I dream, - my body still responds as if they are real, so what is reality? If I am not the cause (creator) of my experience; the director of my focus of attention on some level whether awake or asleep, am I controlled by something else? And if I am completely controlled by something other than me, what then is the purpose of my life? I wish you all - many pleasant realities. Pete.

Reality VS Perception
theGIC.org Enjoy a trip along the Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway as Dr. Bernard Alvarez discusses some fundamentals of Perception. Perception is the process of attaining awareness or understanding of the environment by organizing and interpreting sensory information. All perception involves signals in the nervous system, which in turn result from physical stimulation of the sense organs. For example, vision involves light striking the retinas of the eyes, smell is mediated by odor molecules and hearing involves pressure waves. Perception is not the passive receipt of these signals, but can be shaped by learning, memory and expectation.Perception involves these "top-down" effects as well as the "bottom-up" process of processing sensory input.Perception depends on complex functions of the nervous system, but subjectively seems mostly effortless because this processing happens outside conscious awareness.

How Do We Perceive Color?
Isaac Newton defined the optical spectrum, but it was Goethe who first understood that color is more than just a physical problem. In Theory of Colours (1840), the German writer and painter examined phenomena like colored shadows, refraction, and chromatic aberration, as well as the psychology of color, "marvelling at color's occurrences and meanings" and hoping to uncover its secrets. His great insight: color vision is shaped as much by human perception as it is by mechanical functioning. He was a man of poetic sensibilities. He was also right. Today, neuroscientists believe that your eye doesn't see color at all -- your brain creates it and constructs it through neural processes. Different features including color, shape, location, and velocity are picked up by different regions of the brain and then integrated into a holistic perception of an object. "This is a wonderful area where both science and philosophy have tended to really collaborate, have been in dialogue with each other. In many cases the leading philosophers have also been the leading scientists thinking about this," says the philosopher Alva Noë, a former fellow of the Oxford Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience. For Markus Schulz, this hypothesis holds true. At the turn of the millennium, Markus found himself living in the suburbs of London, on Brixton's Coldharbour Lane, in an attempt to discover his true inner sound. Through his long nights in the studio and attending clubbing nights across the city, such as the iconic Turnmills, he seized various elements that would contribute towards the Coldharbour sound that we love and admire today. However, one track opened his eyes like never before - Cass & Slide's iconic "Perception". In any subsequent interview he has conducted over the past 10 years, Markus cites Perception as the track he wished me made himself, a testament to how much it has continued to influence him. And in the summer of 2008, Markus made his own update of the track for his livesets that year, in instrumental form. Fast forward to December 2009, and four days before the historic Best of Both Worlds event in ...

THE CORPORATION [12/23] Perception Managment
12. Some of our best creative minds are employed to create illusions that divert us from the real issues and manufacture our consent. Beyond their products, the corporation sells us the idea of a better way of life and produces propaganda that affirms their power as necessary for human progress. Bruce Lipton - Biology of Perception 1 of 7
first in a two part series with rob Williams of psych-k. (if anyone has the part with R. williams please post it!) 'the bottom line is, genes do NOT control our biology, that an assumption made years ago that was never even proven scientifically - it just seemed so correct that we bought the story ... if the mechanism actually worked according to the textbooks, ie. if the genes control biology, then at least 120000 genes would be required to make a human. but when the human genome projects results were in, ... it was discovered that 2/3rds of the genes (needed to support their model) were missing. Its not that the genes were missing, it was the understanding that was wrong. "We have to come to a new way of understanding biology. This 'new' understanding has actually already been in the leading edge of science for 10 years now. It takes at least 10 or 15 years for science to take a fact from its first inception and get it out into the public so that the people can understand it. That means anything in current textbooks is at least 10 or 15 years old. what your going to hear tonight is whats going to be the future textbooks. The Neural Circuitry of Perception & Genetic and Hormonal Influences on Cognition
A Google Tech Talk May 5, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Michael Goard, PhD, and Emily Jacobs, PhD. The majority of the human brain is comprised of a single structure, the neocortex, responsible for a range of cognitive functions, from sensory perception to abstract thought. However, despite this diversity of functions, the neocortex has a simple architecture it is comprised of numerous repeated motifs of a single stereotyped neural circuit. This talk will serve as an introduction to the structure and function of the neocortical circuit, particularly focusing on how it processes sensory input in order to generate cohesive perception of the external world. This will be followed by a description of recent experiments demonstrating how the neocortex can process sensory input in different ways depending on the behavioral state of the animal. Finally, there will be a discussion of how understanding neocortical function will lead to innovations in medicine, computing, and artificial intelligence. The study of neuroscience is devoted to understanding how the brain functions uniformly across members of a species, but a critical question centers on how cognitive processes differ between members of a species, or in an individual under varying environmental conditions. In short, why do some people excel where others falter? This talk introduces two factors that contribute to individual differences in cognition: genes and hormones. This concept is examined through recent experiments ...
