Lighting the Olympic cauldron - Montreal 1976 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony
The Opening Ceremony of the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games represented well the styles around the world in the 1970s. Watching the athletes' parade, one has no doubt in which decade those Summer Olympics took place. Stéphane Préfontaine and Sandra Henderson ran the final stretch of the torch relay together representing both the French and English identities of the host city. And as they lit the Olympic cauldron, the Montreal Games were inaugurated.

First perfect ten - Nadia Comaneci - Montreal 1976 Olympic Games
Romanian athlete Nadia Comaneci took up the sport of gymnastics aged six, becoming one of the first students at a school founded by coach Béla Károlyi. In 1975, 13-year-old Comaneci won gold in every event at the European Championships except the floor exercise. A year later in Montreal, she became the first gymnast in Olympic history to be awarded the perfect score of 10.0 for her performance on the uneven bars. She went on to record the perfect 10.0 six more times and became the youngest all-around Olympic gold medallist ever.

Montreal 1976 Olympic Games Highlights
Officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II, Montreal 1976 is remembered as the Olympic Games that presented Nadia Comaneci and her first ever "Perfect 10" to the world. However, there were many more incredible Olympic moments that the world followed. It was the first time women competed in basketball, rowing and handball. Lasse Virén won the 5000 and 10000 metres Double Double, while Alberto Juantorema won the 400 and 800 metres. Teófilo Stevenson won his second boxing Olympic gold medal. Shun Fujimoto incredibly overcame pain and performed with a broken knee on the ring events for the Japanese gymnastics team, who won the team gold medal. Despite not having reached the podium, a few athletes would still have a historical moment in Montreal 1976. Future IOC president Jacques Rogge made his third and final Olympic appearance as an athlete. Queen Elizabeth II's daughter princess Anne competed in the Equestrian events, while future Japanese Prime-Minister Taro Aso took part of the Shooting competition.

How to improve the world (you will only make things worse)
Montreal's 1976 Summer Olympics saw the city gesturing, often haphazardly, towards modernity. One particular stride towards innovation was captured in the ceremonial torch relay. Rather than being transported on foot as per tradition, the Olympic Flame was electronically transmitted via satellite from Athens to Ottawa by means of an electronic pulse derived from the eternal flame. In Ottawa, the signal was transformed into a laser, which then ignited a torch that was carried by hand to Montreal.
We propose to transport a flame from the site of the first nuclear reactor built for commercial use in the United States in Shippingport, PA to an exhibition at the Society for Arts and Technology in Montreal, QC. Rather than simply restaging the 1976 relay, our collaboration seeks to collapse the distances between the context of the Montreal Olympics and this artifact of the atomic age as a way to reinterpret their inherent utopian ideologies and access their entropic potential.

Women's Rowing first Olympic competition - Montreal 1976 Olympic Games
Rowing has been an Olympic sport since the Paris 1900 Games. However, women only started competing at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games, in 1000m races. The former East Germany made history becoming the first female crew to win an Olympic medal in the eight, the sport's most traditional event. The former Soviet Union and the United States of America took second and third positions, respectively, and completed the podium.
