People are a Trip #37: Who is Shona?
"Who are you?" Shona tells all. 'People are a Trip' is a series by Kill Rock Stars spoken-word artist Juliana Luecking. The premise is simple, she asks people blunt questions, and they answer with the truth of the moment. They are hilarious. No, poetic. Well, maybe quite philosophical.

An Afro-Celtic Diddle - Georgia All-State Chorus 2010
All-State Senior Mixed 2010 Dr. Jefferson Johnson, Director This song was actually my favorite, stylistically. I loved how the particular tone of the song was somewhat serious (being in a minor key), but still energetic, upbeat, and fun in its tempo. Plus it's always fun to sing songs with influence from another culture. And the hand-clapping was just icing on the cake. On drums was our accompanist, Chris Fowler, but unfortunately, I did not learn the name of other percussionist. Sorry, sir. Words and music by Michael Coolen. From the inside cover of the music: "This music utilizes Irish traditional rhythms juxtaposed with African counter-rhythms. The word 'namu,' sung first by the altos, comes from the Senegambian region of West Africa. When traditional storytellers (griots or jali) begin reciting important oral history stories, there is often a person sitting next to the jali who says 'namu!' to reinforce that the storyteller has got it correct. In this composition, note that the word 'namu' appears in a duple rhythm against the Irish rhythm, creating one of the most typical African approaches to rhythm, two against three. Other African words that are used include 'shangara,' which comes from the Shona people of Zimbabwe, and is used to describe a specific rhythm/dance; in this case, it is the rhythm to which 'shangara' is used for the text in its first entrance. The term 'minanzi' also comes from the Shona people, and it can be applied in a variety of ways; for example ...

Fisherrow, Shona McMillan © from album People and Songs of the Sea
Photos reflecting Fisherrow, East Lothian and the Fisherrow Fishermen's Walk which came to an end in the seventies as the fishing community in the area declined and the neighbouring town of Musselburgh swallowed up much (but not ALL) of the unique cultural identity of Fisherrow. The photos shown here have been collected and taken by Shona McMillan as part of her 2006-2010 project People and Songs of the Sea - a celebration of Scotland's fishing community, with particular emphasis on the east coast area along the Firth of Forth from the fishing community of Newhaven (Edinburgh) on down to Eyemouth (in the Scottish Borders). In these photos are Shona's mum Jean, grandparents (Crissie and Billy Thorburn) and many other relations and friends from the fishing community of Fisherrow. This track is from the compilation album People and Songs of the Sea which won Liveireland's 2010 Compendium Album of the Year. And in 2009, the Year of Homecoming, Shona's People of the Sea educational photographic exhibitions and events along the coast were visited by over 10000 people. For more information, please visit www.shonamcmillan.co.uk and http The 21 track album and full colour (30) photo booklet album is available from Shona or from Greentrax Recordings on www.greentrax.com

Shona Style Guitar Pt. 2
On this lesson, we continue with the remaining four positions of the "Nhemamusasa" type chord progression played on the top two strings. We play the positions we learned before, and drop the highest chord ain each phrase to come up with the next position. So then there are six positions to play the root-fifth diads.

People on the Weekend
'People on the Weekend" is a digital video animation using another type of visual system, that of architecture visualisation figures, props and backdrops. The viewer is taken on a promotional walkthrough of a new estate without buildings, of a 2D life within the image. Re-stereotyped and ghettoised the groups of figures interact with each other, against a collaged soundtrack of search engined samples.

Butsu Mutandare on Mbira Njari from Zimbabwe, Shona
Noticing there was not a single Njari video on youtube I decided to post one. Take an easy on my playing ability as I have never seen one of these instruments played and got to where I am by reading a description in a book, listening to recordings and relating what I know from the Mbira Huru, Nyunga Nyunga and Matepe.
