(Very Rare!) Sir Henry Irving's Recitation from Richard III (1898)
Since I uploaded the Florence Nightingale recording on my channel, I've received hundreds of requests from YT viewers asking about to upload more 'historical recordings'. So I'm uploading some of them here right now. One of the greatest British Shakespeare Actor of the 19th century and the founder of the Drury Lane Theater, Sir Henry Irving (1838.2.6 ~ 1905.10.13) recites the famous lines of Shakespeare's Richard III ("Now is the Winter of our discontent....."). Recorded on a Edison Brown Wax cylinder at Little Menlo, on May 9th, 1898. The cylinder is very worn out, so it's barely audible, but it is still great historical document to hear the master from two centuries ago. There is a dubbing of this recording made for BBC in 1930s which is much clearer than today's transfer, but it only holds 30 seconds of the recording. On hearing himself for the first time Irvings reaction was : My God! Is that my voice? He later wrote an enthusiastic account of the day to Ellen Terry who was in Berlin at that time: You speak into it and everything is recorded, voice, tone, intonation, everything. You turn a little wheel, and forth it comes, and can be repeated ten thousand times. Only fancy what this suggests. Wouldnt you like to have heard the voice of Shakespeare, or Jesus Christ? Actually, there is another cylinder of Irving's voice, but since the authenticity of that recording is in dispute, I wouldn't put that recording in the video.

Henry Irving -- Reciting 'Now is the Winter of our discontent' from 'Richard III' (1898)
Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) was one of the great British Shakespearean actors of the C19. He was in that great British C19 tradition of actor-manager -- one who took on the leading roles, directed the productions and cast them, organised the sets and costumes ... doing most everything right down to the lighting. He joined forces in 1878 with Ellen Terry and re-opened the Lyceum Theatre. This led to famed productions of 'Hamlet' and of 'The Merchant of Venice' in which he gave a new dignity to his vengeful Shylock. It is thought that Lyceum Theatre manager, Bram Stoker, based his famous character, Dracula, on the actor in the 1897 novel of the same name. This audio recording here is from May 9th, 1898 and Irving recites the 'Now is the winter of our discontent' speech from Shakespeare's 'Richard III'. The sound is awful but it was 1898 and the wax cylinder onto which the speech was recorded is all but worn out. Again, I think it is a something is better than nothing situation. The text of the recording is: Now is the winter of our discontent Made glorious summer by this sun of York; And all the clouds, that lower'd upon our house, In the deep bosom of the ocean buried. Now are our brows bound with victorious wreaths Our bruised arms hung up for monuments; Our stern alarums chang'd to merry meetings, Our dreadful marches to delightful measures. Grim-visag'd war hath smooth'd his wrinkled front; And now, instead of mounting barbed steeds, To fright the souls of fearful ...

Bram Stokers books - DoodleShow
Google congratulates the father of Dracula, Abraham "Bram" Stoker, on his 165th birthday. Stoker was an Irish novelist and short story writer, best known today for his 1897 Gothic novel Dracula. During his lifetime, he was better known as personal assistant of actor Henry Irving and business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London, which Irving owned. In the course of Irving's tours, Stoker travelled the world, although he never visited Eastern Europe, a setting for his most famous novel. At the time of its publication, Dracula was considered a "straightforward horror novel" based on imaginary creations of supernatural life. The novel tells the story of Dracula's attempt to relocate from Transylvania to England, and the battle between Dracula and a small group of men and women led by Professor Abraham Van Helsing.

Great Books - Dracula by Bram Stoker; discussed by Dr Hilary Weeks
To celebrate World Book Day, Dr Hilary Weeks, Course Leader for English Literature at the University of Gloucestershire, talks about Bram Stokers Dracula (1897) and its relation to British and Irish vampire and Gothic fiction. As theatre manager to the famous impresario Sir Henry Irving, Stoker knew how to write for dramatic and sensational effect, and Dracula belongs partly to the late Victorian flowering of lurid sensation literature. However, his novel glances back to earlier, Romantic versions of the monstrous individual, such as Mary Wollstonecraft Shelleys Frankenstein (1818); the Count is a terrifying, degenerate version of the monster who longed for love and human exchange, and he infects Victorian London with the virus of the Nosferatu or Undead, from a ruined tomb in a forgotten land. Stoker articulates contemporary fears of Eastern Europe, and of immigration, and the Count's search for lebensraum foreshadows Nazi ideology. Hilary notes the enduring appeal of the vampire as an embodiment of sex, death and money, but also as a symbol of proliferation reproduction without mothers or bodies. Dracula investigates boundaries between the living and the dead, the East and West, the male and female, and, most frightening of all, between the human and non-human. Life Ain't Funny by Max Burgundy [Official Music Video]
Directed by Oliver Irving.
What I was going for with this video was a riff on the comical, embarrassing elements of our homeless Max character alongside the serious message behind the song. Both playful and hard hitting. I wanted it to look both raw and gritty and yet have a cinematic quality to it.
There is Max dancing, and busking on the 1 train from the Bronx down to the Battery - parts where we went back to the small apartment Max grew up in in the Bronx and the street which was named in honor of his father who died saving someones life.
It is the "Henry Rivera" street sign we drop down from - to Max on the corner on the line:
" For so he loved the world he gave his only begotten son,
In turn took my only begotten dad and I only begotten one"
