Annagassan
Annagassan (Irish: Áth na gCasán, meaning "ford of the paths") is a village in the townland of Ballynagassan, County Louth, Ireland. It sits where the River Glyde enters the Irish Sea.
It was first mentioned as Linn Duachaill in AD 841 when the establishment of a Viking longphort was recorded. This has subsequently been confirmed by archaeological work.
In 827 the Annals of Ulster record that the Vikings attacked the Ciannachta people of Co. Louth and north Meath. These early raids were sporadic coastal attacks by small seaborne forces; however, from the 830s, a ‘new phase’ was characterised by larger fleets, which penetrated up navigable rivers and plundered extensive inland areas. There is a legend that one such Viking was stranded after a raid and settled there. The locals believe this Viking heritage is evidenced by the long-held residence of a seafaring man of "mythic proportions" and wild Scandinavian appearance and demeanour, known to the villagers as "The Bear".
Annagassan was once as important as the Viking settlement at Dubh Linn (The Black Pool). The modern village is generally believed to be built on what archaeologists consider to be a man-made polder structure, constructed to provide shelter for the fjord. The original settlement was located further upstream; navigation was considerably easier on the River Glyde in the 9th century before the intervening build-up of sediment.

Ardee
Ardee (Irish: Baile Átha Fhirdhia, meaning "townland of Ferdia's ford") is a town and townland in County Louth, Ireland. It is located at the intersection of the N2, N52, and N33 roads. Ardee is on the banks of the River Dee and is approximately 20 km (12 mi) from Dundalk, Drogheda, Slane and Carrickmacross. It currently has a population of about 5000.
Originally called Atherdee, its name is derived from the Irish Áth Fhirdia (the Ford of Ferdia), from the mythological four day battle between Cúchulainn and Ferdia, for the defence of Ulster from Queen Maeve of Connacht. Ferdia fell after four days of battle and is buried on the southern banks of the river alongside the Riverside Walk. Ardee Castle in the town (St. Leger's) is the largest fortified medieval tower house in Ireland.[citation needed]
An eight km (five miles) railway line once linked the town to the main Dublin - Belfast line. The station opened on 1 August, 1896 and passenger services ended on 3 June, 1934. The line continued as a freight service until finally closed on 3 November, 1976, serving the local fertiliser factory, sugar beet, and livestock transport. The trackbed was lifted in the late 1980s, and much of the short route is now a designated walkway.

Ballymascanlan
Ballymascanlan (Irish: Baile Mhic Scanláin), otherwise Ballymascanlon, is a small village and townland in County Louth, Ireland, situated 4 km north-east of Dundalk on the road to Carlingford.
The name Ballymascanlan means "town of the son of Scanlan": a reference to Scanlan, son of Fingin, chief of the Ui Méith, who died in 672. The Ui Méith were rulers of the kingdom of Oriel until the Anglo-Norman period. An Ui Meith is credited with having defeated the Danes in Dundalk Bay in 833. In 1185, during the Norman-English period, the district of Ballymascanlan as far north as Carrikarnon was donated by Hugh de Lacy to the Cistercian Abbey of Mellifont.
Following the dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry VIII the lordship of Ballymascanlan was granted to Sir Edward Moore, ancestor of the Marquis of Drogheda. Sir Garrett Moore inherited the title and estates in 1600 and was a friend of Hugh O'Neill, the Earl of Tyrone, who was a frequent visitor to Mellifont and Ballymascanlon. It remained in the hands of the Moore family until the middle of the 18th century.

Baltray
Baltray (historically Ballytra, from Irish: Baile Trá, meaning "beach settlement") is a village and townland in County Louth, Ireland. It sits on the northern shore of the River Boyne estuary.
The village has developed since the latter half of the twentieth century as a dormitory village serving Drogheda Town, which is located inland, to the west of Baltray. It has a general store and a public house.
Baltray is well known for the Golf Links and the "Baltray standing stones", a group of megaliths.
Baltray is home to the Little Tern Conservation Project which is run by *Louth Nature Trust. The project began in 2007 and runs each year from May to August when part of the beach at the Haven is fenced to protect nesting Little Terns. These birds are an Annex 1 species under the EU Birds Directive (79/409/EEC), thus EU member states are required to take special conservation measures to ensure that little terns remain at a favourable conservation status. There is a huge volunteer effort by the local community to warden the project.

Battle of the Boyne
The Battle of the Boyne (Irish: Cath na Bóinne, IPA: [ˈkah n̪ˠə ˈbˠoːn̪ʲə]) was fought in 1690 between two rival claimants of the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones – the Catholic King James and the Protestant King William (who had deposed James in 1688) – across the River Boyne near Drogheda on the east coast of Ireland. The battle, won by William, was a turning point in James' unsuccessful attempt to regain the crown and ultimately helped ensure the continuation of Protestant supremacy in Ireland. Ironically, some contemporary historians have speculated that William's campaign may have been funded, at least in part, by Pope Alexander VIII as part of a shared hostility with William to Louis XIV of France, who at the time was attempting to establish dominance in Europe and to whom James was an ally.
The battle took place on 1 July 1690 in the "old style" (Julian) calendar. This was equivalent to 11 July in the "new style" (Gregorian) calendar, although today its commemoration is held on 12 July. William's forces defeated James' army of mostly raw recruits. The symbolic importance of this battle has made it one of the best-known battles in British–Irish history and it is a key part of the folklore for the Orange Order. Its commemoration today is principally by the Orange Institution.

Carlingford Lough
Carlingford Lough (Irish: Loch Cairlinn; Ulster Scots: Carlinford Loch or Cairlinfurd Loch) is a glacial fjord or sea inlet that forms part of the border between Northern Ireland to the north and the Republic of Ireland to the south. On its northern shore is County Down and on its southern shore is County Louth. At its extreme interior angle (the northwest corner) it is fed by the Newry River and the Newry Canal.
The name is derived from the Old Norse Kerlingfjǫrðr, whch means "narrow sea-inlet of the hag". Historically it was called Cuan Snámh-Aighneach, Snámh-Aighneach or Cuan Cairlinne in Irish. An older English name was Nury (Newry) Bay.
The Newry River and the Newry Canal link the Lough to the nearby city of Newry (the Canal continues on towards the River Bann and Lough Neagh; the river, under the name River Clanrye, loops around County Down). The only other known glacial fjords in Ireland are Lough Swilly and Killary Harbour.
On the northern coast, in County Down, are the coastal towns of Warrenpoint and Rostrevor, backed by the Mourne Mountains. On the southern coast are Omeath, Carlingford and Greenore backed by the Cooley Mountains, all on the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth.

Castlebellingham
Castlebellingham (Irish: Baile an Ghearlánaigh) is a village and townland in County Louth, Ireland. The village has got a lot quieter since the construction of the new M1 motorway which bypasses the village. Because of its closeness to Dublin and Dundalk, the village has seen an influx of new inhabitants and construction.
The castle of Castlebellingham has served as one of the ancestral homes for Bellinghams since the 17th century. It was purchased and built somewhere around 1660 by a Henry Bellingham who was a cornet in the Army during the Civil war. He purchased the lands of Gernonstowne, Louth, from a fellow soldier who had been granted them in lieu of arrears of pay. The purchase was confirmed by King Charles II.
There is some variation on the spelling of Gernonstowne. On various maps and other documents it is spelled Gernonstowne, Gernonstown, Gernon's-Town, Gormanstown, Germanstown, Garlandstown, Garland, etc. Irish road signs show the English as Castlebellingham while the Irish translation still refers to baile an Ghearlanaigh - or Gernonstown. It was not called Castlebellingham for at least forty years after the purchase. The name does not appear on any document before the year 1700. About 1710 it began to appear in journals and other sources to be called Castlebellingham.

Clogherhead
Clogherhead (Irish: Ceann Chlochair) is a fishing village in County Louth, Ireland. Located in a picturesque natural bay on the East Coast it is bordered by the villages of Annagassan to the north and Termonfeckin to the south. with an administrative population per the 2011 Census of 3026, it is in the townlands of Clogher and Callystown, about 12 km (7 mi) northeast of Drogheda. As a seaside village its main industries are fishing and farming. In keeping with its links to the sea there has been an RNLI lifeboat stationed in the village for over 100 years. The current boat is a Mersey class lifeboat, the RNLB Doris Bleasedale, and is unique in Ireland being beach-launched. Following intensive lobbying by the local residents, fishermen and political representatives, Clogherhead now has one of the finest piers in Ireland which was opened following an investment in excess of €2 million.
Historically, the village was known simply as Clogher (Clochair) or Killclogher (Cill Chlochair) while the headland was called Clogher Head. Today the headland remains Clogher Head, the village is called Clogherhead and the townland they are in is called Clogher.

Collon
Collon (Irish: Collann) is a village and townland in the south west corner of County Louth, Ireland on the N2 national primary road. The village is home to the Cistercian Abbey of New Mellifont.
The Church of Ireland parish church at the lower end was built in 1810 to a design by Daniel Augustine Beaufort who was the rector between 1789 and 1821. There is a memorial in the graveyard at the front of the church to men of the parish who died during the 1914-18 Great War, inscribed on the front is the name of Lt. James Samuel Emerson V.C. who was born in the village. The church has been described as "dramatic and atmospheric" and hosted the 2008 Ardee Baroque Festival.
At one point there was a Russian language school in the village, which was founded by White Russian emigres. It is rumoured that the British spies Philby, Burgess and Maclean visited the school as part of their Russian language training.
Collon is home to an animal sanctuary where animals are homed until suitable accommodation is found.

Connacht
Connacht /ˈkɒnɔːt/ (Irish: Connachta / Cúige Chonnacht [ˈkɔnəxtə]), formerly anglicised as Connaught, is one of the Provinces of Ireland situated in the west of Ireland. In Ancient Ireland, it was one of the fifths ruled by a "king of over-kings" (in Irish: rí ruirech). Following the Norman invasion of Ireland, the ancient kingdoms were shired into a number of counties for administrative and judicial purposes. In later centuries, local government legislation has seen further sub-division of the historic counties. In modern times, clusters of counties have been attributed to certain provinces but these clusters have no legal status. The province itself, while enjoying common usage and forming a strong part of local identity, has no official function for local government purposes. Along with counties from other provinces, it lies in the North-West constituency for elections to the European Parliament.
It consists of the counties of Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo. Its main urban centres are Galway in the south and Sligo in the north. It is the smallest of the four Irish provinces, with a population of 542,039.

County Armagh
County Armagh (named after its county town, Armagh) is one of six counties that form Northern Ireland, situated in the north-east of the island of Ireland. From its highest point at Slieve Gullion, in the south of the County, Armagh's land falls away from its rugged south with Carrigatuke, Lislea and Camlough mountains, to rolling drumlin country in the middle and west of the county and finally flatlands in the north where rolling flats and small hills reach sea level at Lough Neagh.

County Cork (Irish: Contae Chorcaí) is a county in Ireland. It is located in the South-West Region and is also part of the province of Munster. It is named after the city of Cork (Irish: Corcaigh). Cork County Council is the local authority for the county.
There are two local authorities whose remit collectively encompasses the geographic area of the county and city of Cork. The county, excluding Cork city, is administered by Cork County Council while the city is administered separately by Cork City Council. Both city and county are part of the South-West Region. For standardized European statistical purposes, both Cork County Council and Cork City Council rank equally as first level local administrative units of the NUTS 3 South-West Region. This geographic 'isolation' from the rest of the Republic has led to Donegal people maintaining a distinct cultural identity and has been used to market the county with the slogan Up here it's different. While Lifford is the County Town, Letterkenny is by far the largest town in the county. Letterkenny and the nearby city of Derry form the main economic axis of the north-west of Ireland.

County Down

County Fermanagh
County Fermanagh (pronunciation: /fərmˈænə/) (from Irish: Fear Manach meaning "men of Manach") is the only one of six counties that form Northern Ireland to not adjoin Lough Neagh. Lying within the historical province of Ulster, it is also one of the thirty-two traditional counties of Ireland.
The county covers an area of 1,691 km² (653 sq; mi), with a population of approximately 57,527, with Enniskillen its county town. It is a mainly rural landscape.

County Galway
County Galway (Irish: Contae na Gaillimhe) is a county in Ireland. It is located in the West Region and is also part of the province of Connacht. It is named after the city of Galway. Galway County Council is the local authority for the county. There are several strongly Irish-speaking areas in the west of the county. The first inhabitants in the Galway area arrived over 7000 years ago. Shell middens tell us about the existence of people as early as 5000 BC.

It is named after the pre-Gaelic tribe who lived in part of the present county. Kerry County Council is the local authority for the county. Kerry is the 5th largest of the 32 counties of Ireland by area and the 13th largest by population. A southern branch joins the Barrow navigation at Athy. The Royal Canal stretches across the north of the county along the border with Meath. Pollardstown Fen is the largest remaining calcareous fen in Ireland, covering an area of 220 hectares and is recognised as an internationally important fen ecosystem with unique and endangered plant communities, and declared a National Nature Reserve in 1986.

Later it saw the influence of the Vikings as seen in the name of Carlingford Lough. There are a number of historic sites in the county, including religious sites at Monasterboice and Mellifont Abbey. In the early fourteenth century the Scottish army of Edward Bruce (brother of Robert of Bannockburn fame) was defeated in the Battle of Faughart near Dundalk, Edward losing not only his claim to the High Kingship Of Ireland, but also his life. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries featured many skirmishes and battles involving Irish and English forces. Oliver Cromwell attacked Drogheda in 1649 slaughtering the Royalist garrison and hundreds of the town's citizens (Siege of Drogheda). Towards the end of the same century the armies of the warring Kings, James and William, faced off in South Louth during the build-up to the Battle of the Boyne - the battle takes its name from the river Boyne which reaches the sea at Drogheda.

Drogheda
Drogheda ( /ˈdrɒhədə/; /ˈdrɔːdə/; Irish: Droichead Átha, meaning "bridge of the ford") is an industrial and port town in County Louth on the east coast of Ireland, 56 km (35 mi) north of Dublin. It is the last bridging point on the River Boyne before it enters the Irish Sea.
As the River Boyne divides the dioceses of Armagh and Meath, Drogheda was founded as two separate towns, Drogheda-in-Meath (for which a charter was granted in 1194) and Drogheda-in-Oriel (or 'Uriel') as County Louth was then known. In 1412 these two towns were united and Drogheda became a 'County Corporate', styled as 'the County of the Town of Drogheda'. Drogheda continued as a County Borough until the setting up of County Councils, through the enactment of the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898, which saw all of Drogheda, including a large area south of the Boyne, become part of an extended County Louth. With the passing of the County of Louth and Borough of Drogheda (Boundaries) Provisional Order, 1976, County Louth again grew larger at the expense of County Meath. The boundary was further altered in 1994 by the Local Government (Boundaries) (Town Elections) Regulations 1994. The 2007-2013 Meath County Development Plan recognises the Meath environs of Drogheda as a primary growth centre on a par with Navan.

Dromiskin
Dromiskin (historically Druminisklin, from Irish: Druim/Droim Ineasclainn) is a village and townland in County Louth, Ireland. It is situated 10 km south of Dundalk, about 1 km inland from the Irish Sea coast, and is located in one of Louth's most historical areas.
The village was home to a monastery for hundreds of years, once visited by Saint Patrick. This site for the monastery was picked as it is a local high point; it is also where a round tower was built and still remains. From the tower there is a view of all of Dundalk Bay and the surrounding countryside. The village is part of the Darver and Dromiskin parish, Darver being a neighbouring village. The parish is bounded by the Fane River on the north and by the Glyde River on the south.
Since the mid-1990s, Dromiskin, like many areas in County Louth, has seen a marked increase in population. In 2006, 992 people were living in Dromiskin with 1,932 living in the electoral division.

Dundalk
Dundalk (/ˌdʌnˈdɔːlk/, from Irish: Dún Dealgan meaning "Dalgan's stronghold") is the county town of County Louth in Ireland. It is situated where the Castletown River flows into Dundalk Bay. The town is close to the border with Northern Ireland and equidistant from Dublin and Belfast. The town's name, which was historically written as Dundalgan, has associations with the mythical warrior Cú Chulainn. The town's crest reads Mé do rug Cú Chulainn Cróga, meaning "I gave birth to brave Cú Chulainn". It was granted its charter in 1189. Within legally defined boundaries it is the largest town in Ireland (pop. 31,073). It is also the largest by area. Dundalk's rural population is 25,581 giving a combined statistical area of 56,654.
In 2003 Dundalk was amongst nine cities and towns to be designated Gateway status in the Irish Government's National Spatial Strategy.
The Dundalk area has been inhabited since at least 3500 BC, when Neolithic farmers first came to Ireland. A tangible reminder of their presence can still be seen in the form of the Proleek Dolmen, the eroded remains of a megalithic tomb located at Ballymascanlon a few miles to the north of Dundalk. Celtic culture arrived in Ireland around 500 BC. Dunleer
Dunleer (Irish: Dún Léire) is a town and townland in County Louth, Ireland.
Dunleer town is situated midway between Dundalk and Drogheda. It is the principal Town Borough in the Barony of Ferrard. It has a Charter dating back to 1252. Situated on the White River, it is the junction of several roads that intersect the town, including the R132 (old N1), R169 and R170 regional roads.
Located upstream is the White River Mill, which is a 17th century flour mill, which is open at times to visitors. The White River Mill pond is located on the confluence of the White River and Ba Be Stream. The town has its origins in the early Sixth Century Christian monastery of Lann Leire. The Monastery and its town were the subject of periodic raids by groups of plunderers between the seventh and twelfth centuries. In the sixteenth century the manor of Dunleer was granted to John Barnewall, 3rd Baron Trimlestown. Rathescar Lakeside walk and woodland ecological area is located a short distance from the town. This is a local amenity that is well liked in the locality and beyond for its outstanding natural beauty.

Gyles' Quay
Gyles' Quay is an isolated stretch of beach located 1 km south of the R173/R175 road in County Louth, Ireland. It was named after Ross Gyles who build a wood structure there in 1780. It was later rebuilt in stone in 1824 and survives to this day.
The long isolated beach with accessible hinterland made it very attractive to smugglers who used the beach for importing wine and tobacco. In 1823 the authorities constructed a coastguard watch station to limit the illegal imports. Today tourists are drawn to the area for the long beach expanse and the caravan park located overlooking the area.
Gyles Quay Halt railway station opened on 7 July 1935 and finally closed on 1 January 1952.

Knockbridge
Knockbridge (Irish: Droichead an Chnoic) is a small village within the townland of Ballinlough (Baile an Locha) in County Louth, Ireland.
The village is centred on a crossroads, where there is a pub and a shop. There are three housing estates, a Roman Catholic church and a large primary school in the village.
Stephenstown House, a large ruined Victorian house, once owned by a branch of the Fortescue family, stands beside the River Fane about a mile outside the village. Stephenstown Pond, about a hundred metres from the house, was redeveloped in the mid-1990s and is a public amenity. Knockbridge Church (St Mary's) has a number of Harry Clarke designed stained-glass windows. Since 2000 its parish priest has been Fr. Gerard McGinnity.
Stephenstown Pond has a conference centre and an 8,000 sq ft (740 m2) community enterprise space. It is a habitat for a large number of animals. Fishing permits for the pond can be obtained in the village from McNamee's Pub or Brodigan's Shop.
Cú Culáin's stone is located in Knockbridge village,famous from Ancient Irish legends Cu Culáin was said to have died against the standing stone.

Louth, County Louth
Louth (Irish: Lú) is a village at the heart of County Louth, Ireland. It is roughly 11 km south-west of the town of Dundalk.
The county takes its name from the village, which was once an important town. The original Irish name for both village and county was Lughbhaidh but today it is standardised and simplified as Lú. It was named after the Irish god Lugh.
It is home to the St Mochtas House, which according to legend was built in a night by fairies for St Mochtas, circa 500AD, and to St Mary's Abbey, Louth, a 12th-century monastery, which now lies in ruins.
Until early in the 21st century, the village was also home to the last remnants of St John's Abbey. The last standing portion of the walls of the monastery, a 12-foot-high (3.7 m), 4-foot-wide (1.2 m) piece known locally as The Pinnacle, suddenly collapsed overnight.
At the heart of the village is the Church of the Immaculate Conception, which was built in 1892, and sits atop a hill overlooking the village and surrounding area. It was destroyed in 2003 by an accidental fire, started during renovation work, leaving only the exterior walls and spire standing. In early 2006, it reopened with a modern-style interior. Since late 1997 Fr.Sean Quinn has been the parish priest.

Native Irish speakers existed in Omeath until just before the middle of the 20th century. Although the dialect is now dead, recordings have been made by German linguist Wilhelm Doegen for the Royal Irish Academy.
Omeath had a station on the Dundalk, Newry and Greenore railway, which opened on 1 August 1876 and finally closed on 1 January 1952.

Termonfeckin
Termonfeckin or Termonfechin (Irish: Tearmann Feichín, meaning "Féchín's refuge") is a small village and townland in County Louth, Ireland. It is within the parish of the same name, and lies 8 km (5.0 mi) north-east of Drogheda. The population of the village was 653 as per census 2006.
Tradition has it that a medieval monastery was founded in the village by Saint Feichin of Fore in the 7th century. The monastic settlement was plundered by Vikings in 1013 and by the clan Ui-Crichan of Farney on Christmas Day 1025. The monastery was plundered again a century later (in 1149) by raiders from Bregia (Meath). The village gained ecclesiastical importance in the late 12th century when an Augustinian monastery was founded in the village. A convent of nuns, also of the Augustinian order, was established shortly afterwards and while the monastery didn't survive, the convent flourished in Termonfeckin up until its eventual closure in 1540, following the Reformation of Henry VIII.

Tinure
Tinure (Irish: Tigh an úir, meaning "house of the yew") is a small village and townland in the parish of Monasterboice, County Louth, Ireland. The official spelling of the village's name is Tinure (which is derived from Tigh an úir) however it is sometimes mistakenly referred to locally as "Tenure".
Tinure is predominantly rural in character, although there has been some new housing constructed in recent years. It falls within the scope of Drogheda Town, to its south, and Dunleer Town, to its north, which provide employment for many of the village's residents. There is a small business park located on the northern edge of the village, with a number of services firms on site. The growth of the village in recent years can be largely attributed to its proximity to the M1 motorway, which has improved transport linkages to the locality.
Tinure is noted for its Roman Catholic Church, The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, which was constructed in 1894. It is located on the main junction of the five roads that intersect the village.

Arthur Thomas Moore
Arthur Thomas Moore VC CB (20 September 1830 – 25 April 1923) was born in Carlingford, County Louth and educated at the East India Company College. He was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He was 26 years old, and a lieutenant in the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry, Indian Army during the Persian War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 8 February 1857 at the Battle of Khushab, Persia, Lieutenant Moore who was Adjutant of the Regiment, was probably the first in the attack, but his horse, on leaping into the square, fell dead, crushing his rider and breaking his sword. Lieutenant Moore extricated himself, but he would almost certainly have lost his life had not another lieutenant (John Grant Malcolmson) fought his way to his dismounted comrade and carried him to safety. In this battle Lieutenant Moore also charged an infantry square of 500 Persians at the head of his regiment and jumped his horse over the enemy's bayonets.

Beatrice Geraldine Hill-Lowe (26 January 1868 – 1951) was an Irisharcher who represented Britain. She was born in County Louth, Ireland. She was the first Irishwomen to win an Olympic medal. She won a bronze medal at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London .
Hill-Lowe competed at the 1908 Games in the only archery event open to women, the double National round. She took third place in the event with her 618 points, 70 behind champion Queenie Newall's tally.

Brendan McGahon
Brendan McGahon (born 22 November 1936) is a former Irish politician in the Fine Gael party. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for the constituency of Louth. Often described as 'colourful' and with a reputation as a social conservative, McGahon was first elected to Dáil Éireann in the November 1982 general election and retained his seat until retiring at the 2002 general election.
McGahon was born in Dundalk, County Louth and was educated at St. Mary's College in Dundalk. His grandfather, T.F. McGahon, was one of the inaugural members of Dundalk Urban District Council when it was created along with other Irish local authorities by the British Government in 1898. T.F. McGahon was a leading member of the Irish Parliamentary Party(IPP). He started a local newspaper, the Dundalk Democrat which was supportive of the IPP. T.F. was a critic of the War of Independence campaign, of Sinn Féin, and of the then IRA, arguing that the campaign would result in the partition of Ireland. He was later succeeded on the council by his son, O.B. McGahon who in turn was followed by his nephew, Hugh McGahon SC. The family subsequently supported the National League Party and the Independent TD James Coburn and joined Fine Gael when Coburn joined the party.They were also prominent members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Cathy Maguire
Cathy Maguire an accomplished singer and songwriter who was born in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland on 11 October 1981. At a very young age she became known nationally as a child star. She recorded her first album at the age of twelve and after several listeners' requests, she was invited by Gerry Ryan to perform a live set on his radio program. This sparked off a career that spanned numerous TV appearances[citation needed] and 3 albums by the time she was 17.
After formal college education Maguire returned to the United States and went to work in Nashville, TN as a songwriter. She released an album entitled 'Portrait' on the 17th of April 2009. The album was released by Celtic Collections, the label behind the phenomenally successful Celtic Woman. Maguire toured in Ireland extensively with The High Kings, who are also on the Celtic Collection label. She also opened for Martina Mc Bride on her Irish 2009 tour.
Maguire holds a BA Hons Degree in Ethnomusicology. She has embarked on a Masters by research which she will complete in 2010. She is currently based in the USA.

Colin O'Donoghue
Colin O'Donoghue (born 26 January 1981)[citation needed] is an Irish film, television and theatre actor.
O'Donoghue was born and raised in Drogheda, County Louth, in a Roman Catholic family. He initially attended Dundalk Grammar School, and then The Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin. At age 16, O'Donoghue went to Paris, France, for a month to learn the French language.

O'Donoghue appeared as Duke Philip of Bavaria in Season 3 (2009) of the The Tudors (2007–2010), an historical-fiction television series first aired on Showtime. He made his Hollywood film debut alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins in the horror thriller film The Rite (2011). O’Donoghue had made an audition video for The Rite in a friend's home studio in Drogheda and sent it to the United States.
O'Donoghue also plays in a band called "The Enemies", formed in 2003, in Ireland.
For his role in Home for Christmas, he was awarded an Irish Film and Television Award for Best New Talent at the 1st Irish Film and Television Awards, held on 1 November 2003.

Cormac Ó Gráda is an Irish economist, a professor of economics at University College Dublin, and a prolific author of books and academic papers.

Cú Chulainn
Cú Chulainn, also spelled Cú Chulaind or Cúchulainn ([kuːˈxʊlˠɪnʲ] ( listen)) Irish for "Culann's Hound"; and sometimes known in English as Cuhullin ( /kəˈhʊlɨn/), is an Irish mythological hero who appears in the stories of the Ulster Cycle, as well as in Scottish and Manx folklore. He gained his better-known name as a child after he killed Culann's fierce guard-dog in self-defence, and offered to take its place until a replacement could be reared. At the age of seventeen he defended Ulster single-handedly against the armies of queen Medb of Connacht in the epic Táin Bó Cúailnge ("Cattle Raid of Cooley"). It was prophesied that his great deeds would give him everlasting fame, but that his life would be a short one. This is the reason why he is compared to the Greek hero Achilles. He is known for his terrifying battle frenzy or ríastrad, (translated by Thomas Kinsella as "warp spasm" and by Ciaran Carson as "torque") in which he becomes an unrecognisable monster who knows neither friend nor foe. He fights from his chariot, driven by his loyal charioteer Láeg, and drawn by his horses, Liath Macha and Dub Sainglend. In more modern times, Cú Chulainn is often referred to as the "Hound of Ulster".

Dermot Christopher Ahern (born 20 April 1955) is a former Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Louth constituency from 1987 to 2011. Dermot Ahern was born in Dundalk, County Louth, in 1955. He was educated at the Marist College in Dundalk and later attended University College Dublin. Afterwards he studied at the Law Society of Ireland and was admitted as a solicitor. He then started a successful career as a solicitor.
Ahern currently lives in Blackrock near Dundalk with his wife and their two children. His pastimes include playing golf and windsurfing. He is a former Ulster windsurfing champion. Ahern is a former chairman of Rock Celtic soccer club and was also treasurer of Dundalk F.C. Supporter's Club.
Ahern was born into a family that had no association with party politics. He became involved in politics at a young age and became a member of Louth County Council in 1979 as a Fianna Fáil representative. He served on that authority until 1991. Ahern was elected to Dáil Éireann at the 1987 general election and has retained his seat ever since. The following year he was appointed assistant government chief whip by Taoiseach Charles Haughey.

Eamonn Campbell
Eamonn Campbell (born 29 November 1946) in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland, has been a member of The Dubliners since 1987. He was also in the Dubliners when they recorded their 25th anniversary show on The Late Late Show hosted by Gay Byrne. He is known as a guitarist and has a very rough voice very similar to the former Dubliner the late Ronnie Drew. He is still touring with The Dubliners. Eamonn is originally from Drogheda in County Louth, but now lives in Walkinstown, a suburb of Dublin.

It was his suggestion that the Dubliners work with London Irish band The Pogues in the mid 1980’s, thus giving them their biggest UK hit to date ("The Irish Rover") and an appearance on Top of the Pops.
He has produced all of the Dubliners' albums since 1987, as well as albums for many other Irish artists, including Foster and Allen, Brendan Shine, Daniel O'Donnell and Paddy Reilly. He played locally with the Delta Boys, The Bee Vee Five and the Country Gents before joining Dermot O'Brien and the Clubmen and first met The Dubliners when both acts toured England together in 1967.

Edward Bruce
Edward the Bruce (Old French: Edward de Brus; Medieval Gaelic: Edubard a Briuis; Modern Scottish Gaelic: Eideard or Iomhair Bruis; c. 1280 – 14 October 1318), sometimes modernised Edward of Bruce, was a younger brother of King Robert I of Scotland, who supported his brother in the struggle for the crown of Scotland, then pursued his own claim in Ireland. He was proclaimed High King of Ireland, but was eventually defeated and killed in battle by Sir John de Bermingham. He also held the Scottish title of Earl of Carrick.
Edward was one of five sons of Robert de Brus, jure uxoris Earl of Carrick and Marjorie, Countess of Carrick. He and Niall (Francised: Nigel) were the second and third brothers, but it is uncertain which was which. His date of birth is unknown, but it was probably not very long after Robert was born in 1274, and he was old enough to be fighting in 1307 and to be given an independent command not long after. The Irish medievalist Seán Duffy suggests that he was probably fostered in Ireland as a child, likely by the O'Neills of Ulster, while Archie Duncan suggests some period of time spent with the Bissetts of the Glens of Antrim. This was a common Scottish and Irish cultural practice, and would tie in with, and perhaps explain, parts of his later life.

Evanna Patricia Lynch (born 16 August 1991) is an Irish actress who rose to prominence playing Luna Lovegood, a supporting role in the Harry Potter film series. Gerry O'Connor
Gerry "Fiddle" O'Connor (born in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland) is a traditional Irish fiddle player.
His family has played fiddle for at least four generations and Gerry learned his music from his mother, Rose O'Connor, and also from hand-written manuscripts passed down through the family.
He later came under the influence of John Joe Gardiner, the great Sligo fiddle player, who lived in Dundalk for many years. Gerry's performances concentrate on long forgotten tunes from his home area in the North East of Ireland, many of which were recorded on his 2004 album, Journeyman.
In addition to his solo performances and recordings, O'Connor is a founding member of two bands: Skylark (who have recorded four albums) and La Lúgh (whose album Brighid's Kiss was voted album of the year in 1996 by readers of Irish Music Magazine).
Gerry is also an established fiddle repairer and he concentrates on this work when he is not touring. He now lectures in traditional Irish music at the Dundalk Institute of Technology and is regarded as one of the most disciplined and respected teachers within the faculty[citation needed]. He has sometimes been confused with a banjo player of the same name, and hence adopted the name Gerry "Fiddle" O'Connor.

Irish American
Irish Americans are citizens of the United States who can trace their ancestry to Ireland. A total of 36,278,332 Americans—estimated at 11.9% of the total population—reported Irish ancestry in the 2008 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. Roughly another 3.5 million (or about another 1.2% of Americans) identified more specifically with Scotch-Irish ancestry. The Irish diaspora population in the United States is roughly 6 times the modern population of Ireland.
The only self-reported ancestral group larger than Irish Americans is German Americans. The Irish are widely dispersed in terms of geography, and demographics. Irish American political leaders have played a major role in local and national politics since before the American Revolutionary War: eight Irish Americans signed the United States Declaration of Independence, and 22 American Presidents, from Andrew Jackson to Barack Obama, have been at least partly of Irish ancestry. Joel Mokyr (PhD Yale, 1974) is an American economic historian. He is the Robert H. Strotz Professor of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University.
He holds a joint appointment in economics as well as a Sackler Professorial Fellow at the Eitan Berglas School of Economics at the University of Tel Aviv. John Joseph Lee
John Joseph Lee (born 9 July 1942) is an Irish historian and former senator. He is currently Professor of History and Glucksman Professor for Irish Studies and Director of Glucksman Ireland House, at New York University.
Born in Tralee, Co Kerry, he spent his early years in Castlegregory in the same county.
He graduated in 1962 from University College Dublin with first-class honours in History and Economics. He completed his MA some years later on the history of the railways in nineteenth-century Ireland. He was also a graduate student of Peterhouse, Cambridge.
In 1973, he published The Modernisation of Irish Society, 1848-1918. The following year he moved back to Ireland to become Professor of Modern History at University College Cork, succeeding Oliver McDonagh. He held the chair until 2002.
His 1989 Ireland 1912-1985 - Politics and Society won the Irish Independent/Irish Life Prize for History in 1991; and both the Aer Lingus/Irish Times Prize for Literature and the J.S. Donnelly, Snr. Prize for History and Social Sciences in 1992.

Kenny Finn
Kenny Finn (born Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland) is a former Irish American soccer and gaelic football player. He spent four seasons in the League of Ireland before moving to the United States. He then played in the German American Soccer League as well as with the New York Gaelic Football team. He earned two caps with the U.S. national soccer team. He is the Aztec Soccer Club Director of Coaching.
Faced with the choice between Gaelic football and soccer, Finn chose soccer and signed as an apprentice with Dundalk F.C. when he turned fifteen. He became a first team starter at left back a year later. In 1958, Dundalk won the FAI Cup over Shamrock Rovers F.C., never conceding a goal during the competition. In 1959, he left both Dundalk and Ireland when he emigrated to the United States.
When Finn arrived in the U.S., he settled in New York City, signing with the German-Hungarians of the German American Soccer League. He remained with the German-Hungarians for over a decade before retiring from playing professionally.

Kevin Thornton
Kevin Anthony Thornton (born 9 July 1986) is an Irish footballer who currently plays for Nuneaton Town.
A promising midfielder and product of the Sky Blues' Academy, Thornton was given a squad number for the first time in the 2005–06 season, following a productive pre-season in which he was included on the trips to Ibiza and his native Ireland. He made his debut on 20 September 2005, in a League Cup 1–0 defeat at Selhurst Park, replacing Isaac Osbourne on 83 minutes. He made sixteen Championship appearances later in the season, putting in a string of impressive displays in March and April. A fans' favourite due to his exciting style of play, Thornton scored his first goal for the club on 26 August 2006 against Hull City, but an ankle injury marred what seemed destined to be a successful season, limiting him to just 13 appearances. The Irishman penned a new two-year extension to his contract in May 2007, keeping him at the club until summer 2010. In 2007–08 he was limited to twenty appearances and continued to be used mainly as a substitute. He had a good run at the end of the season under new manager Chris Coleman. In September 2008, Thornton signed a six week loan deal at League One team Brighton & Hove Albion. Following a six week extension on the loan, he had played fifteen games for the Seagulls before returning to the Ricoh Arena.

Mark Dearey
Mark Dearey (born 19 March 1963) is an Irish Green Party politician and former member of Seanad Éireann. He was nominated by the Taoiseach on 23 February 2010 following the resignation of Déirdre de Búrca.
He was previously a County Councillor on Louth County Council and a member of Dundalk Town Council for the Green Party. He was elected to the Town Council in 2004 and re-elected in 2009 and also elected to the County Council for the first time.
He was the Green Party candidate at the 2007 general election in the Louth constituency and received 7% of first preference votes but was not elected.
He first came to public attention in County Louth in 1994 when he and three others from the county took a court action against British Nuclear Fuels Limited, to seek an end to reprocessing at Sellafield. That court action is still ongoing[citation needed] and the Stop Thorp Alliance Dundalk group have continued to highlight the dangers of reprocessing nuclear fuel, the alternatives to reprocessing, and the lack of urgency of Government to make Ireland's case.

Michael McKevitt
Michael McKevitt (born 4 September 1949) is an Irish republican who was convicted of directing terrorism as the leader of the paramilitary organisation, the Real IRA.
McKevitt, Who was a native of County Louth joined the Provisional IRA during the outbreak of the Troubles. In February 1975 he was shot in the knees by the Official IRA during a feud between the two organisations. He was a longtime senior member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army and served as the organisation's Quartermaster General, a role which gave him unique personal knowledge of the whereabouts of, and access to PIRA arms dumps. He quit the organisation in protest at the movement's ceasefires and its participation through Sinn Féin in the Peace Process which led to the Good Friday Agreement. McKevitt launched a dissident offshoot of the PIRA, called the Real IRA, using guns and weaponry he as the Quartermaster General of the PIRA had known the whereabouts of and had seized.
McKevitt is married to Bernadette Sands McKevitt, a sister of 1981 PIRA hunger striker and MP, Bobby Sands, who died during his hunger strike. Sands McKevitt was a leading member of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement and had been described in media reports as the third highest ranking Real IRA officer. She left the 32 County Sovereignty Movement following the imprisonment of her husband.

Nicholas Callan
Father Nicholas Joseph Callan (1799 – 1864) was an Irish priest and scientist from Darver, Co. Louth, Ireland. He was Professor of Natural Philosophy in Maynooth College near Dublin from 1834, and is best known for his work on the induction coil.
He attended school at an academy in Dundalk. His local parish priest, Father Andrew Levins, then took him in hand as an altar boy and Mass server, and saw him start the priesthood at Navan seminary. He entered Maynooth College in 1816. In his third year at Maynooth, Callan studied natural and experimental philosophy under Dr. Cornelius Denvir. He introduced the experimental method into his teaching, and had an interest in electricity and magnetism.
Callan was ordained a priest in 1823 and went to Rome to study at Sapienza University, obtaining a doctorate in divinity in 1826. While in Rome he became acquainted with the work of the pioneers in electricity such as Luigi Galvani (1737–1798) who was a pioneer in modern obstetrics and Alessandro Volta (1745–1827) who is known especially for the development of the electric battery. In 1826, Callan returned to Maynooth as the new Professor of Natural Philosophy (now called physics), where he also began working with electricity in his basement laboratory at the college.

Oliver Cromwell
Oliver Cromwell (25 April 1599 – 3 September 1658) was an English military and political leader who was part of the joint republican, military and parliamentarian effort that overthrew the Stuart monarchy as a result of the English Civil War, and was subsequently invited by his fellow leaders to assume a head of state role in 1653. As such, Cromwell ruled as "Lord Protector" for a five-year segment (1653–58) of the 11-year period of republican Commonwealth and protectorate rule of England, and nominally of Ireland, Wales and Scotland. As one of the commanders of the New Model Army, he played an important role in the defeat of the King's forces, the royalists in the English Civil War. After the execution of King Charles I in 1649, Cromwell dominated the short-lived Commonwealth of England, conquered Ireland and Scotland, ruling as Lord Protector from 1653 until his death in 1658.
Cromwell was born into the ranks of the middle gentry, and remained relatively obscure for the first 40 years of his life. Along with his brother, Henry, he kept a small holding of chickens and sheep, selling eggs and wool to support himself. His lifestyle resembled that of a yeoman farmer until he received an inheritance from his uncle. After undergoing a religious conversion during the same decade, Cromwell made an independent style of puritanism an essential part of his life. He took a generally (but not completely) tolerant view towards the many Protestant sects of his period. As a ruler he executed an aggressive and effective foreign policy and did as much as any English leader to shape the future of the land he governed. But his Commonwealth collapsed after his death and the royal family was restored in 1660. An intensely religious man—a self-styled Puritan Moses — he fervently believed God was guiding his victories.

Peter Rice
Peter Rice (1935–1992) was an Irish structural engineer. Born in 52 Brigid Street, Dundalk in County Louth, he spent his childhood between the town of Dundalk, and the villages of Gyles' Quay and Inniskeen. He was educated at the Queen's University of Belfast where he received his primary degree, and spent a year at Imperial College, London. He originally studied Aeronautical Engineering but switched to Civil Engineering. Taken on by Ove Arup & Partners, his first job was the roof of the Sydney Opera House. He married Sylvia Watson in 1965 and they had one son and three daughters. Jonathan Glancey in his obituary said "Rice was, perhaps, the James Joyce of structural engineering. His poetic invention, his ability to turn accepted ideas on their head and his rigorous mathematical and philosophical logic made him one of the most sought-after engineers of our times".
He believed the best buildings result from the symbiotic relationship between the architect and the engineer where the engineer is the objective inventor and the architect the creative input. He found the Anglo Saxon understanding of the work of an engineer restrictive and preferred the French and Italian interpretation of the role.

Rob Kearney
Robert Kearney (born 26 March 1986), also referred to as Rob Kearney, is an Irish rugby union footballer who currently plays for UCD, Leinster and Ireland. As a youth he also played rugby union for Clongowes Wood College and Gaelic football for Louth in the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship.
Born and raised in the Cooley Peninsula, Kearney, like many of his peers, got involved in athletics at an early age. The dominant sport in the area is Gaelic football. As a youth, Kearney played Gaelic for Naomh Mhuire, and in the Cooley Kickhams underage setup, before graduating to the Cooley senior football team at the relatively young age of 16. He played for Cooley in the Louth Senior Football Championship final in 2004.
Kearney attended Clongowes Wood College in County Kildare for his secondary education. After his Leaving Certificate he moved to University College Dublin, where he studied Arts. He graduated in April 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Kearney attended University College Dublin where he played for the rugby team. In 2005 he helped the U-20s team win the McCorry Cup, beating Trinity College in the final.

Steve Staunton
Stephen "Steve" Staunton (born 19 January 1969) is an Irish association football manager and former professional footballer, who was most recently manager of Darlington. He earned 102 caps for the Republic of Ireland national football team, captained his team to the knock-out stage of the 2002 FIFA World Cup and earned his place in the FIFA Century Club.
Staunton enjoyed a distinguished club career with Liverpool and Aston Villa. After retiring, he served as Republic of Ireland national team coach prior to Giovanni Trapattoni.
Born in Drogheda, Ireland, Staunton was an accomplished all-round sportsman. He lived in Dundalk County Louth, and attended the De La Salle College Dundalk. As well as playing soccer for his home club of Dundalk, he played Gaelic football, appearing for Louth GAA's U-16 team.He also played for the his local team St.Domnics underage.
Staunton was spotted by Liverpool playing in Ireland for his home club of Dundalk as a 17-year-old and was signed on 2 September 1986 by manager Kenny Dalglish for the bargain price of £20,000.

Séamus Kirk
Séamus Kirk (born 26 April 1945) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He is a former Ceann Comhairle (chairman) of Dáil Éireann, serving from October 2009 to March 2011. He has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Louth constituency since 1982.
Kirk was born in Drumkeith, County Louth. He is married to Mary McGeough. They have three sons and one daughter and live in Knockbridge, County Louth. He was educated at CBS Dundalk He was a farmer and agricultural adviser before entering politics. He is a former player on the Louth County Team.
He was a member of Louth County Council from 1974 to 1985, and he was first elected to the Dáil Éireann at the November 1982 general election as a member of the 24th Dáil. He has been returned in each subsequent election.
Kirk was Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food from 1987 to 1992. Later, he was the chairman of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party from 2002 until October 2009. He was also an unsuccessful candidate for election to the European Parliament in 2004 in the Leinster constituency. His running mate Liam Aylward took a seat for Fianna Fáil.

The Corrs are an Irish band which combine pop rock with traditional Celtic folk music. The brother and sisters are from Dundalk, Ireland. Tommy Smyth
Thomas Michael "Tommy" Smyth (pronounced Smith) (born 1946 in Knockbridge, County Louth, Ireland) is one of the soccer commentators in the United States. He is a color commentator for ESPN, which he joined in February 1993 as a football analyst. He provides co-commentary or in-studio analysis for major soccer events. He also commentates on Gaelic games, horse racing, and harness racing for ESPN.
Smyth moved to the United States in 1963 following a brief football career with a local Irish team. In America, he played with the Shamrock Club in the German American Soccer League as well as for the Boston Beacons of the North American Soccer League.
Tommy was much loved by the New York Irish and Irish-American communities for having commentated at Gaelic Park in the Bronx, NY. He commentated for Irish football and hurling matches for the local leagues from U-12 up to senior level. Inasmuch, it is a pleasing thing for any of these youths and their families to see Tommy work on the global level. He, at least once, made a comical remark in regards to the poor level of play in a UEFA Champions League game, saying "I've seen better games played at Gaelic Park in Riverdale" which is home to amateur football and the Gaelic games.

These photos are from my 2010 trip to Ireland, and to a beautiful area called the Cooley Peninsula, in County Louth. The music is a song (Green County Louth) that was written by me and Debie Robbins, about our amazing time there. I sing it as a love song for the area, and for all of Ireland. This song dedicated to Sheila and Patsy Barry, who rented us our cottage and embraced us like family. Ireland is home to the warmest, friendliest people in the world. Debie and I were very fortunate to rent our cottage from Sheila and Patsy. They went out of their way to accommodate our needs and desires, and took us into their lives in ways we could never have imagined. It was an incredible experience for us to be so taken care of in a beautiful, yet unfamiliar place.

In 1815 James Kieran and his brother William built the Philipstown Mills, in the Townland of Philipstown, approximately three miles from Dundalk at a cost of £30000 - £40000. With many medieval remains & overlooking the sea - Carlingford is a really attractive town in Co.Louth. As a result, it definitely attracts a lot of visitors (including many, many stag & hen do's) but so what .. it still manages to hang on to its character. A real draw for me is that the Cooley peninsula on which it is located, is the site of the mythical Táin Bó Cuailnge. My imagination runs riot as a result (seeing bulls & warriors everywhere.) Rate Carlingford as a place to live at likeplace.ie

County Louth ( /ˈlaʊð/; Irish: Contae Lú)[2][3] is a county[4] of Ireland. It is part of the Border Region and is also located in the province of Leinster. It is named after the town of Louth. Louth County Council is the local authority for the county. The population of the county is 122,808 according to the 2011 census.[5]

County Louth is colloquially known as 'the Wee County' as it is the smallest county by area (826 km² (319sq miles).[6] It is the 19th largest in terms of population.[7] It is the smallest of Leinster’s 12 counties by size and the sixth largest by population.

The official spelling in the Irish (Gaelic) language (Lú) must not be confused with the similar sounding superlative form lú meaning smaller or smallest of the adjective beag. Instead, it is derived from Lughbhaidh - the Celtic pagan god Lugh, whose festival was celebrated at Lughnasadh (Lúnasa). This is a county steeped in myth, legend and history, going back to the pre-historical days of the Táin Bó Cúailnge (Cooley Cattle Raid, see Cú Chulainn). Later it saw the influence of the Vikings as seen in the name of Carlingford Lough. There are a number of historic sites in the county, including religious sites at Monasterboice and Mellifont Abbey. In the early fourteenth century the Scottish army of Edward Bruce (brother of Robert of Bannockburn fame) was defeated in the Battle of Faughart near Dundalk, Edward losing not only his claim to the High Kingship Of Ireland, but also his life. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries featured many skirmishes and battles involving Irish and English forces. Oliver Cromwell attacked Drogheda in 1649 slaughtering the Royalist garrison and hundreds of the town's citizens (Siege of Drogheda). Towards the end of the same century the armies of the warring Kings, James and William, faced off in South Louth during the build-up to the Battle of the Boyne - the battle takes its name from the river Boyne which reaches the sea at Drogheda.
In 1798 the leaders of the United Irishmen included Bartholomew Teeling, John Byrne and Patrick Byrne, all from Castletown; Anthony McCann from Corderry; Nicholas and Thomas Markey from Barmeath, Arthur McKeown, John Warren and James McAllister from Cambricville. They were betrayed by informers, notably a Dr. Conlan, who came from Dundalk, and an agent provocateur called Sam Turner, from Newry. Several leaders were hanged.
In 1816 the Wildgoose Lodge Murders took place in the west of the county.
The priest and scientist Nicholas Callan (1799–1864) was from Darver.

The majority of the county's population live in either Dundalk (2011 pop. 31,073[14]) in north Louth, or Drogheda (2011 pop. 30,435[14]) in the south. The 2006 Census[1] confirmed Dundalk and Drogheda as not only the largest towns in the county, but also the second and third largest towns in The Republic of Ireland.
Within legally defined boundaries Dundalk has the larger population, however the total population (including suburbs or environs) is greater in Drogheda, this includes areas and suburbs of Drogheda which lie in County Meath.[1] The Local Government Commission has recommended an increase to the urban area of Dundalk to be implemented in 2012/2013 thus introducing Borough council status and replacing the existing Town Council. This will result in a further increase to the urban population of Dundalk by a projected 25,000 residents.

The local authority is Louth County Council, offices in Dundalk, which provides a number of services including; planning, roads maintenance, fire brigade, council housing, water supply, waste collection, recycling and landfill, higher education grants and funding for arts and culture.[15]
For elections to Dáil Éireann, Louth is represented by the five member Louth constituency which takes in the entire county of Louth and small parts of eastern Meath. In the last general election 2 TD's from Fine Gael and one each from Sinn Féin, the Labour Party and Fianna Fáil were elected.
Irish language[link]
The area of Omeath was Irish-speaking until the early 20th century. A native dialect of Louth Irish existed there until about 1930, but is now extinct, although recordings have been made.[16]
