Egyptians abroad, seen here in the Egyptian Embassy in Dubai, have begun voting today ahead of a countrywide referendum on Saturday, on the new constitution that President Mohamed Mursi fast-tracked through an Islamist-dominated drafting assembly. Meanwhile in Egypt protestors took to the street in Cairo to protest against the upcoming referendum. This Cairo protestor spoke out saying "There hasn't been a consensus on the constitution. Why do you think we are divided and Egyptians are now killing each other. It's because as a president he was not just. He is very confused, he has many issues, many decisions and took them back. We can't boycott, we must all go to say no to the referendum." Although the President made concessions last Saturday, cancelling the new constitutional declaration the opposition refused to make any compromise saying that 90% of judges would not supervise the referendum. Voting in Japan's general election is under way. Polls predict the conservative Liberal Democratic Party will be returned to power. Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and his Democratic Party of Japan have faced widespread discontent over their handling of the economy and last year's tsunami and nuclear disaster. A territorial dispute with Beijing over islands in the South China Sea has also fuelled nationalist fervour. And as Al Jazeera's Rob McBride reports, that has played into the hands of the opposition.

Egypt's constituent assembly has adopted a draft constitution after a marathon overnight session. Many, including liberals and the Coptic Church, have denounced it. They say the proposed laws restrict freedom of speech and religion. Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei has been equally critical. He says the charter belongs in the garbage bin of history. Al Jazeera's Sherine Tadros reports from Cairo's Tahrir Square.

Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favour of fair use. This one-hour journalistic exploration by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Shelley Saywell takes the viewer beyond the headlines and into the daunting, determined minds and hearts of Hamas, a movement formed in 1987 with one declared aim -- to destroy the hard-won New State of Israel through Jihad: through applied resistance to Israel's occupation of what Palestinians perceived -- and perceive -- as their ancestral land. Saywell and her small, two-person crew spent many months securing unprecedented access to not only the current leaders of Hamas, but also to one-on-one interviews with insightful, knowledgeable Israelis and Palestinians not often heard from. A crucially important resource was consultant Olivia Ward, a veteran Toronto Star journalist whose intimate knowledge of, and credibility within, the region proved invaluable.
