  The Admiralty Group of islets consists of eight rocky outcrops within 2 km of the north of Lord Howe Island: Soldier’s Cap, Sugarloaf, Noddy, South Island, Tenth of June, North Rock, Flat Rock and Roach Island. Roach Island is the largest being about 800 m long and 86 m high with a much-photographed 15 m tall tunnel at its northern end. The basalt lava flows are crossed by many dikes. The vegetation consists of grasses, sedges and a few bushes.
  These islets are noted for the nesting populations of seabirds in spring and summer in greater numbers than anywhere else on Lord Howe Island, mainly Sooty terns, Masked boobys and Brown noddys.
  Boat trips take visitors to Roach Island for a bird colony experience.

  Bega Valley Shire is located on the south-eastern coastline of New South Wales and extends from Bermagui in the north to the Victorian border in the south. It includes the towns of Bega, Tathra, Merimbula, Tura Beach, Wolumla, Cobargo, Bemboka, Pambula, Pambula Beach, Towamba and the former whaling port of Eden. The Bega Valley Shire is also known as the Sapphire Coast for tourism and marketing purposes.
  The Shire is the largest local government area in coastal New South Wales, with an area of 6,280 square kilometres (2,420 sq mi), and has the longest coastline of any local government area in the state. It is sparsely populated, largely because 75% of the area belongs to various National Parks and State Forests. The population as of the 2006 Census was 31,062.
  Bega Valley is particularly known for its dairy industry, though tourism is of growing importance.
  In August 1999 the Bega Valley shire council was sacked and an administrator was put in place until 2002 where a new council was elected.

  Bland Shire is a Local Government Area (LGA) in the Central West of New South Wales on the Newell and Mid-Western Highways.
  The council's name honours William Bland.
  The largest town and council seat is West Wyalong. The region also includes the towns of Wyalong, Barmedman, Tallimba, Ungarie, Weethalle and Mirrool. The Shire's major economic activities are agriculture, mining, transport, tourism and wholesale distribution.
  Average annual rainfall is 482 millimetres (19.0 in). Average temperature are: maximum 23.3 °C (73.9 °F), minimum 9.5 °C (49.1 °F). Prevailing wind direction is: AM: north east; PM: south west, with predominantly calm conditions. Topography is generally undulating or flat, with the altitude ranging from 200 to 486 metres (660–1,594 ft). Main tree species include: kurrajong, cypress pine, mallee, box, ironbark, belah and wilga. Native fauna include: water fowl, red and grey kangaroos, echidnas, goannas, possums, bats and mallee fowls. Soil are predominantly clay with some granite soil and red brown earth, mostly neutral in pH. Native pasture plants include: wallaby grasses, Queensland blue grass and plains and wire grass.

  Brisbane ( /ˈbrɪzbən/) is the capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Queensland and the third most populous city in Australia. Brisbane's metropolitan area has a population of approximately 2.1 million, and the South East Queensland urban conurbation, centred around Brisbane, encompasses a population of more than 3 million. The Brisbane central business district stands on the original European settlement and is situated inside a bend of the Brisbane River, approximately 23 km (14 mi) from its mouth at Moreton Bay. The metropolitan area extends in all directions along the floodplain of the Brisbane River valley between the bay and the Great Dividing Range. While the metropolitan area is governed by several municipalities, a large portion of central Brisbane is governed by the Brisbane City Council, which is by far Australia's largest Local Government Area by population. The demonym of Brisbane is Brisbanite.
  Brisbane is named after the river on which it sits, which, in turn, was named after Scotsman Sir Thomas Brisbane, the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. The first European settlement in Queensland was a penal colony at Redcliffe, 28 kilometres (17 mi) north of the Brisbane central business district, in 1824. That settlement was soon abandoned and moved to North Quay in 1825. Free settlers were permitted from 1842. Brisbane was chosen as the capital when Queensland was proclaimed a separate colony from New South Wales in 1859.

  Byron Shire
  Byron Shire is a Local Government Area located in the North Coast region of New South Wales, Australia, on the Pacific Ocean coast between 50 and 80 kilometres (30-50 mi) south of the Queensland border. The shire, administered from the town of Mullumbimby, covers an area of 566.7 square kilometres (218.8 sq mi), and has existed as a local government entity since 1906. It was named for Cape Byron, itself named by Captain Cook in May 1770 in honour of Admiral John Byron.
  Byron Shire was created on 7 March 1906 under the Shires Act 1906 as one of 134 local government areas in regional New South Wales. On 16 May 1906, a temporary council of five members was appointed to administer it, and elections were held in November. On 4 December, the council convened for the first time with William Robert Baker as its inaugural president.
  On 1 July 1908, the Mullumbimby Municipality was created out of part of Byron. On 1 October 1980, the municipality and the shire were re-amalgamated by direction of the Minister for Local Government.

  The Cabonne Shire is a Local Government Area in the Central West of New South Wales. It is on the Mitchell Highway and the Broken Hill railway line.
  The council seat resides within one of the two largest villages in the Shire, Molong. The Shire also includes the villages of Borenore, Canowindra, Cargo, Cudal, Cumnock, Eugowra, Manildra, Mullion Creek, Nashdale and Yeoval.
  The area includes the site of Australia's first gold rush, Ophir. It is also known for agriculture (including grape growing and wine-production), tourism, (including ballooning) and mining.

  Carrathool Shire
  Carrathool Shire is a Local Government Area (LGA) in the Far West of New South Wales on the Mid-Western Highway and north of the Sturt Highway.
  The largest town is Hillston and the council seat is Goolgowi. The Shire also includes the villages of Merriwagga, Rankins Springs, Carrathool.
  Where once regular droughts made life almost untenable, the area now has irrigated crops, gardens, greened sporting facilities and village verges. Over 15,000 square kilometres are now used in rural pursuits, including more than 600 km² in wheat, rice, vineyards, cotton, potatoes, vegetables and orchard trees. Most of the change was made possible by the widespread use of river and underground water.

  The City of Albury is a Local Government Area (LGA) in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. The LGA covers the entirety of the Albury urban area including the suburbs of Forrest Hill, Lavington, Thurgoona, Splitters Creek, Ettamogah, Bowna, Table Top and Wirlinga.
  The LGA is administered by the Albury City Council, consisting of a mayor and eight councillors with day-to-day operations controlled by a General Manager.
  Albury was declared a municipality in 1859 and proclaimed a city in 1946.

  City of Bankstown
  The City of Bankstown is a city and Local Government Area in the Canterbury-Bankstown region of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, centred on the suburb of Bankstown.
  In 2006, the NSW government released the new planning strategy for Sydney and surrounds, known as the City of Cities plan for Sydney. The plan identifies Bankstown as a 'Major Centre' for the south west Sydney region. Bankstown Airport was also identified as a 'Specialist Centre' and the Hume Highway as part of a potential transport corridor.
  District of Banks Town was named by Governor Hunter in 1797 in honour of botanist Sir Joseph Banks, who travelled to Australia with Captain James Cook in 1770. The area was discovered during an expedition of the Georges River by George Bass and Matthew Flinders. The area of first European settlement along the river has been partially preserved as part of the Mirrumbeena Regional Reserve. Bankstown also includes large areas of the Georges River National Park.
  Bankstown became a municipality in 1895, and then declared official city status in 1980 in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

  The City of Blacktown is a Local Government Area in Western Sydney, situated on the Cumberland Plain, approximately 35 km from Sydney CBD.   Blacktown was originally named for an Aboriginal settlement in the area. Today, Blacktown continues to be home to the largest Aboriginal population of any suburb or township in New South Wales. A school for Aborigines was moved in 1823 from Parramatta to the site where Richmond Road meets Rooty Hill Road North. The road from Prospect to Richmond became known as the Black Town Road. In 1860 the Railway Department gave the name of Black Town Road Station to the railway station at the junction of the railway and the Black Town Road, with the name shortening to Blacktown by 1862.

  The City of Fairfield is a Local Government Area in the south-west of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia.

  For more than 30,000 years, Aboriginal people from the Cabrogal-Gandangara tribe tribe have lived in the area.
  European settlement began early in the 19th century and was supported by railway construction in 1856. At the turn of the century the area had a population of 2,500 people and with fertile soils, produced crops for distribution in Sydney.
  Rapid population increase after World War II saw the settlement of many ex-service men and European migrants. Large scale Housing Commission development in the 1950s swelled the population to 38,000. By 1979, the population had reached 120,000 and the City was becoming one of the larger Local Government Areas in New South Wales.
  On 4 September 2006, Fairfield Council announced that it had banned spitting in public, which is now punishable with a fine of up to $1100. This is the only ruling of its kind in New South Wales. This also applies to people who spit their chewing gum onto the floor.

  City of Hawkesbury
  The City of Hawkesbury (formerly Hawkesbury Shire) is a Local Government Area of New South Wales, Australia, part of which is at the fringe of the Sydney metropolitan area, about 50 kilometres north-west of the Sydney central business district. Hawkesbury City is named after the Hawkesbury River.
  It was first settled by Europeans in 1794 in a bid to acquire arable land to feed the increasing population of the penal colony at Sydney. In April 1794, Lieutenant Governor Francis Grose submitted plans for the first 22 farms on the Hawkesbury River in the present Pitt Town Bottoms area. In June 1795 a camp of aborigines opposing the landtakings was harassed by a British regiment commanded by Paterson (who later regretted the necessary injustice)[A. Grasby and M. Hill: Six Australian Battlefield,]. By 1811 Governor Lachlan Macquarie established the five Macquarie Towns in the area. They are Windsor, Richmond, Castlereagh, Wilberforce and Pitt Town. Many of the early 19th century buildings still survive today. Ebenezer has the oldest surviving church and school building in Australia.

  The City of Orange is a Local Government Area of New South Wales, Australia, including Orange and the surrounding areas. It is on the Mitchell Highway and the Main Western railway line.
  It includes the villages of Lucknow, Shadforth, Spring Hill and March.
  Orange has several water sources used for domestic consumption, both currently in use and formerly used. Currently/ Suma Park Dam and Spring Creek Reservoir are used for domestic water consumption. Two other dams were previously used for domestic water consumption however are now used for recreational purposes, these being Lake Canobolas and Gosling Creek Reservoir. Orange was on Level 5 Water restrictions, however after heavy rain increased capacity from around 20% to 100% restrictions were eased back to level 2.
  Orange City Council is undertaking a number of strategies to supplement its supply, including stormwater harvesting.
  The first batch of harvested stormwater was released into Suma Park Dam on 21 April 2009. The harvested stormwater was tested by Analytical Laboratory Services, an independent laboratory based in Sydney. ALS tested for 90 potential pollutants. The tests revealed that the water quality met all targets. The first batch contained 14 megalitres. It is believed to be an Australian first for harvesting stormwater for potable use.

  The Municipality of Penrith was incorporated on 12 May 1871 under the Municipalities Act 1858. On 3 March 1890, St Marys was separately incorporated, and on 26 July 1893 and 9 September 1895, Mulgoa and Castlereagh followed respectively. In 1913, Mulgoa became the "A" Riding of the neighbouring Nepean Shire.
  On 1 January 1949, the Municipalities of Penrith, St Marys and Castlereagh and part of the Nepean Shire amalgamated to form a new Municipality of Penrith. It was declared a City on 21 October 1959, and expanded westwards to include Emu Plains and Emu Heights, formerly part of the City of Blue Mountains, on 25 October 1963.
  The City of Penrith's overall medians on the key measures of advantage/disadvantage, unemployment and income vary little from metropolitan Sydney's median. The 2006 SEIFA index was 999.4 for the City overall, whilst the median individual and household incomes ($517 and $1,147 respectively) are almost the same as metropolitan Sydney's ($518 and $1,166). However, the median age of the City's residents was 32 compared to 35 in metropolitan Sydney, and more Penrith residents by proportion had TAFE certificates (55.8% vs 40.1%), whilst less held bachelor or higher degrees (18.4% vs 35.0%).

  The City of Randwick is a Local Government Area in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. One of Sydney's largest parks, Centennial Park, lies within the city boundary of Randwick. The Botany Bay National Park lies partially within the City of Randwick and is notable for preserving some of the last remaining stands of pre-European coastal heath vegetation in the Sydney area, known as Endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub. There is a historic fort on Bare Island at the mouth of Botany Bay, in the suburb of La Perouse. This fort, and another Randwick attraction, the racecourse, featured prominently in the 2000 movie Mission: Impossible II. La Perouse is also home to one of Sydney's largest Aboriginal communities.

  The City of Rockdale is a Local Government Area in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia.   City of Shellharbour
  City of Shellharbour is a Local Government Area located in the Illawarra region, on the east coast of Australia, about 100 km south of Sydney. It covers southern suburbs of the Wollongong urban area centred around Shellharbour, and has an estimated population of 66,905.

  Indigenous occupation of the area, particularly of Bass Point, can be traced back to 17,000 BP. The area was discovered by Bass and Flinders in 1796. Free settlers began arriving between 1817 and 1831 and the township was founded in 1851.
  The Shellharbour (Municipal) Council was constituted on 4 June 1859, and was gazetted as a City in 1996. In May 2009, Shellharbour City Council celebrated its 150th birthday.

  Gwydir Shire is a Local Government Area located in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia along the state's border with Queensland. Established on 17 March 2004, it was preceded by two previous local governments and part of a third.
  Historically, the area within Gwydir was part of the Yallaroi Shire, based in Warialda which is home to the new shire's main works depot, and Bingara Shire based in Bingara, where administrative functions are centred. A northern portion of the Barraba Shire was also included.

  Lord Howe Island ( /ˈhaʊ/, locally /ˈhæɔ/) is an irregularly crescent-shaped volcanic remnant in the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand, 600 kilometres (370 mi) directly east of mainland Port Macquarie, and about 900 kilometres (560 mi) from Norfolk Island. The island is about 10 km long and between 2.0 km and 0.3 km wide with an area of 14.55 km², "of which only 398 hectares is in the lowland settled area". Along the west coast there is a sandy semi-enclosed sheltered coral reef lagoon. Most of the population lives in the north, while the south is dominated by forested hills rising to the highest point on the island, Mount Gower (875 m or 2,871 ft). The Lord Howe Island Group of islands comprises 28 islands, islets and rocks. Apart from Lord Howe Island itself the most notable of these is the volcanic and uninhabited Ball's Pyramid about 23 km to the south-east. To the north there is the Admiralty Group, a cluster of seven small uninhabited islands.
  The first reported sighting of Lord Howe Island was on 17 February 1788 when Lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball, commander of the Armed Tender HMS Supply was on its way from Botany Bay to found a penal settlement on Norfolk Island. On the return journey Ball sent a party ashore on Lord Howe Island to claim it as a British possession. It subsequently became a provisioning port for the whaling industry, and was permanently settled in June 1834. When whaling declined, the worldwide export of the endemic kentia palms began in the 1880s, which remains a key component of the Island's economy. The other continuing industry, tourism, began after World War II.

  Macquarie Island
  Macquarie Island (or Macca) lies in the southwest corner of the Pacific Ocean, about half-way between New Zealand and Antarctica, at 54°30S, 158°57E. Politically, it is part of Tasmania, Australia since 1900 and became a Tasmanian State Reserve in 1978. In 1997 it became a World Heritage Site. It was a part of Esperance Municipality until 1993, when the municipality was merged with other municipalities to Huon Valley. The island is home to the entire Royal Penguin population on earth during their annual nesting season. Ecologically, it is part of the Antipodes Subantarctic Islands tundra ecoregion.
  Since 1948 the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) has maintained a permanent base, the Macquarie Island Station, on the isthmus at the northern end of the island at the foot of Wireless Hill. The population of the base, the island's only human inhabitants, usually varies from 20 to 40 people over the year.
  The Australian/Briton Frederick Hasselborough discovered the uninhabited island accidentally on 11 July 1810 when looking for new sealing grounds. He claimed Macquarie Island for Britain and annexed it to the colony of New South Wales in 1810. The island took its name after Colonel Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821. Hasselborough reported a wreck "of ancient design", which has given rise to speculation that the island may have been visited before by Polynesians or others.

  Marrickville Council is a Local Government Area (LGA) situated in the Inner West region of Sydney, Australia.
  The area is bounded by Leichhardt to the north, the City of Sydney to the east and north-east, the City of Botany Bay to the south-east, Rockdale to the south, Canterbury to the west, and Ashfield to the north-west.
  While the area's background has traditionally been working-class, several waves of immigration and a continuing trend of gentrification have substantially influenced the demographics and character of the area.   Mount Lidgbird is located in the southern section of Lord Howe Island, just north of Mount Gower, and has its peak at 777 metres (2,549 ft).
  Mount Lidgbird is named after the naval officer Captain Henry Lidgbird Ball, who first sighted Lord Howe Island in 1788. He was on his way to Norfolk Island in the ship HMS Supply when he spotted Lord Howe Island.
  The trek to the 777-metre summit is hard to climb, but not as tough as the climb to Mount Gower. Half way up the mountain is Goat House Cave, a former shelter for 19th century Kentia palm gatherers. From this spot, visitors can see nesting Masked Boobies and numerous Red-tailed Tropicbirds.

The archipelago, part of the Melanesia subregion, includes the main island of Grande Terre, the Loyalty Islands, the Belep archipelago, the Isle of Pines and a few remote islets. The Chesterfield Islands in the Coral Sea are also part of New Caledonia. Locals refer to Grande Terre as "Le Caillou", the rock.
  New Caledonia has a land area of 18,576 square kilometres (7,172 sq mi). The population (2011 estimate) is 256,275. The capital of the territory is Nouméa.
  The earliest traces of human presence in New Caledonia date back to the Lapita period. The Lapita were highly skilled navigators and agriculturists with influence over a large area of the Pacific.
  The British first sighted New Caledonia on September 4, 1774, during the second voyage of Captain James Cook. He named the territory New Caledonia, as the north-east of the island reminded him of Scotland. The New Hebrides were colonized by both the British and French in the 18th century shortly after Captain James Cook visited the islands. The two countries eventually signed an agreement making the islands an Anglo-French condominium, which lasted from 1906 until 1980, when the New Hebrides gained their independence as Vanuatu.
  The Condominium divided the New Hebrides into two separate communities — one Anglophone and one Francophone. This divide continues even after independence, with schools either teaching in one language or the other, and between different political parties.
  The New Hebrides were a unique form of colonial territory in which sovereignty was shared by two great powers – Britain and France – instead of exercised by just one.   Ningaloo Reef
  Ningaloo Reef is a fringing coral reef located off the west coast of Australia, approximately 1200 km north of Perth. The reef is 260 km long and is Australia's largest fringing coral reef and the only large reef positioned very close to a landmass.
  It is known for its seasonal feeding concentrations of the whale shark, and the conservation debate surrounding its potential tourism development. In 1987 the reef and surrounding waters were designated as the Ningaloo Marine Park. In 2011 the reef and surrounding areas were world heritage listed by the United Nations.
  Although most famed for its whale sharks which feed there during March to June, the reef is also rich in coral and other marine life. During the winter months, the reef is part of the migratory routes for dolphins, dugongs, manta rays and humpback whales. The beaches of the reef are an important breeding ground of the loggerhead, green and hawksbill turtles. They also depend on the reef for nesting and food. The Ningaloo supports an abundance of fish (500 species), corals (300 species), molluscs (600 species) and many other marine invertebrate. The reef is less than half a kilometre offshore in some areas, such as Coral Bay.

  Port Macquarie
  Port Macquarie is a city on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia, about 390 km (242 mi) north of Sydney, and 570 km (354 mi) south of Brisbane. The city is located on the coast, at the mouth of the Hastings River, and has an estimated population of 44,313.
  The site of Port Macquarie was first visited by Europeans in 1818 when John Oxley reached the Pacific Ocean from the interior, after his journey to explore inland New South Wales. He named the location after the Governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie.
  Oxley noted that 'the port abounds with fish, the sharks were larger and more numerous than I have ever before observed. The forest hills and rising grounds abounded with large kangaroos and the marshes afford shelter and support to innumerable wild fowl. Independent of the Hastings River, the area is generally well watered, there is a fine spring at the very entrance to the Port'.
  In 1821, Port Macquarie was founded as the first penal settlement, replacing Newcastle as the destination for convicts that had committed secondary crimes in New South Wales. Newcastle, which had fulfilled this role for the previous two decades, had lost the features required for a place for dumping irredeemable criminals, that being isolation, which was lost as the Hunter Valley was opened up to farmers, and large amounts of hard labour, which had diminished as the cedar in the area ran out and the settlement grew in size. Port Macquarie, however, with its thick bush, tough terrain and local aborigines that were keen to return escaping prisoners in return for tobacco and blankets, provided large amounts of both isolation and hard labour to keep the criminals in control. Under its first commandant, Francis Allman, who was fond of the flogging, the settlement became hell, where the convicts had limited liberties, especially in regard to being in possession of letters and writing papers, which could get a convict up to 100 lashes.

  Riversleigh
  Riversleigh, in the north-west of Queensland, is Australia's most famous fossil site. The 100 km² area has fossil remains of ancient mammals, birds and reptiles of Oligocene and Miocene age. The site was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1994 and is an extension of the Boodjamulla National Park. The fossils at Riversleigh are rare because they are found in soft freshwater limestone which hasn't been compressed. This means the animal remains retain their three dimensional structure.
  Fossils at Riversleigh are found in limestone by lime-rich freshwater pools, and in caves, when the ecosystem was evolving from rich rainforest to semi-arid grassland community. Thirty-five fossil bat species have been identified at the site, which is the richest in the world. The skull and nearly complete dentition of a fifteen million-year-old monotreme, Obdurodon dicksoni, provide a window into the evolution of this characteristically Australian group. Fossil ancestors of the recently extinct thylacine, Thylacinus cynocephalus, have also been identified among Riversleigh's fauna. In 1993, Nimbadon skulls were unearthed in a previously unknown cave in the region. Researchers estimate that the prehistoric marsupial first appeared about 15 million years ago and died out about 12 million years ago, perhaps from climate change induced losses in habitat. Other fossils have provided evidence of how the koala has evolved in response to Australia's change from predominate rainforest vegetation to dryer eucalypt forests.

  Tweed Shire is a Local Government Area located in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia, on the border with Queensland where it meets the Pacific Ocean coast. The shire, administered from the town of Murwillumbah, covers an area of 1,321.0 square kilometres (510.0 sq mi), and has existed as a local government entity since 1947. It was named for the Tweed River.
  The European history of the Tweed Shire began in 1823 when the Tweed River was discovered by John Oxley. After sheltering on Cook Island, (4 km from the River's mouth), Oxely travelled 11 km up river. In 1828, Captain H. J. Rous explored 50 km up the river. Settlers began to arrive in 182?, the first of which were the cedar getters, who came to harvest Great Red Cedars and send them back to England. During the height of the cedar logging industry, the Tweed Valley was one of the wealthiest districts in Australia.
  The Municipality of Murwillumbah was created on 25 May 1902, and held its first meeting on 22 August 1902, at which Peter Street was elected its first Mayor. The Shire of Tweed, with its primary centre of population at Tumbulgum on the Tweed River, came into being in the surrounding area on 7 March 1906 with the enactment of the Local Government Act 1906.

  Walgett Shire is a local government area in the Orana region of New South Wales, Australia, bordering Queensland on the north. The town of Walgett is at the junction of the Barwon River and the Namoi River, and at the junction of the Kamilaroi Highway and the Castlereagh Highway.
  The Shire is divided between the agricultural areas (producing wool, cattle, wheat and cotton), which are near the Barwon and Namoi or southeast of the Barwon, and the outback country northwest of the Barwon, including the black opal mining and fossicking town of Lightning Ridge. Prior to 1957, when Lightning Ridge was established (or re-established) as a significant settlement, the outback country was part of the Western Division.
  The Council was controlled by an Administrator between 2004 and 2008, Vic Smith, appointed by the New South Wales Minister for Local Government. The previous Walgett Shire Council was split between factions representing Lightning Ridge and the rest of the Shire and apparently became unworkable as a result. This, among other things, was investigated by a Public Enquiry in 2004 under the New South Wales Local Government Act 1993. Other matters investigated included poor administration, failure to properly inform councillors in relation to some matters, apparently illegal walkouts by some councilors to frustrate votes and, in particular, events surrounding a failed project to build a community centre in Lightning Ridge.

  Warringah Council
  Warringah is a local council area in the Northern Beaches region of Sydney, Australia. Warringah Council overlaps with a number of suburbs from the Manly Council area to the south and the Pittwater Council area to the north. It includes a number of popular beaches (which are also suburb names) for swimming and surfing such as Narrabeen, Collaroy and Dee Why.
  Warringah was ranked 41st out of 590 Local Government areas in Australia in the BankWest Quality of Life Index 2008.
  There are various meanings put forward for the name Warringah, including "sign of rain", "across the waves" and "sea". It was once the home of the Guringai (or Kuringgai) language group of the Garigal clan, who owned the land between Port Jackson and Broken Bay, extending to the Lane Cove River in the west.
  Warringah was explored early on in the settlement of Sydney, only a few weeks after the arrival of the First Fleet. However, it remained a rural area for most of the 1800s, with only small settlements in the valleys between headlands. While it was geographically close to the city centre, to reach the area over land from Sydney via Mona Vale Road was a trip of more than 100 kilometres.

The highway carries many trucks and tourists, particularly Victorians on their way up to Queensland. Large numbers of cars towing caravans can be seen at any time passing through the shire.

  Wyong Shire is located in the Central Coast region of New South Wales, Australia, north of Sydney. Wyong Shire's administrative centre is located in the town of Wyong, and the Council maintains service and information centres at The Entrance, Tuggerah and at Lakehaven Shopping Centre. The Council and the City of Gosford control the Gosford/Wyong Councils' Water Authority, which operates the Mangrove Creek Dam.
  Wyong Shire is located around the coastal lake system of Tuggerah Lake, Budgewoi Lake and Lake Munmorah. It includes a coastal strip from Bateau Bay to Budgewoi, some lakeside towns and residential areas, some inland towns on the coastal plain and a sparsely populated region to the west with some rural townships (Yarramalong, Dooralong, Jilliby) and regions of native bush (Kulnura).

  1889 saw the opening of the railway from Sydney to Newcastle, and Wyong turning into a proper township with the opening of the Royal Hotel and the first post office was established. The railway was the making of the timber industry. In its heyday, around the turn of the century, Wyong exported thousands of railway sleepers. In 1903 the Lighthouse at Norah Head was built and the first few houses began to appear at The Entrance. Already early tourists were making the trip to Tuggerah Lakes - by boat, horse-drawn vehicle and train - to take advantage of fishing and walking opportunities in the area, and the population of the Shire grew over time. Roads, bridges and boarding houses were built. In 1947, Wyong Shire was created out of the old Erina Shire.

  Yass Valley Council is a local government area in the Australian State of New South Wales. It is located in the Southern Tablelands region of New South Wales on the Hume and Barton Highways and the Main Southern railway line.

  Sir Francis Charles Chichester KBE (17 September 1901 – 26 August 1972), aviator and sailor, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for becoming the first person to sail single-handed around the world by the clipper route, and the fastest circumnavigator, in nine months and one day overall.
  Chichester was born in Barnstaple, Devon, England, and was the son of an Anglican clergyman, Reverend Charles Chichester, seventh son of Sir Arthur Chichester, 8th Baronet (see Chichester Baronets). His mother was Emily Annie, daughter of Samuel Page. He was sent to a residential boarding school at the age of 6, and attended Marlborough College as an adolescent during the first World War. At age 18, Chichester emigrated to New Zealand, where in ten years he built up a prosperous business in forestry, mining and property development, only to suffer severe losses in the Great Depression.
  After returning to England in 1929 to visit family, he took flying lessons at Brooklands, Surrey, and became a qualified pilot. He then took delivery of a de Havilland Gipsy Moth aircraft, which he intended to fly to New Zealand, hoping to break Bert Hinkler’s record solo flight back to Australia en route. Mechanical problems meant the record eluded him; however, he completed the trip in 41 days. The aircraft was then shipped to New Zealand. Finding that he was unable to carry enough fuel to cross the Tasman Sea directly, he had his Gipsy Moth fitted with floats, borrowed from the New Zealand Permanent Air Force, and went on to make the first solo flight across the Tasman Sea from East to West (New Zealand - Australia.) He was the first aviator to land an aircraft at Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island. Again, the trip was delayed: after his aircraft was severely damaged at Lord Howe, he had to rebuild it himself with the help of islanders.

  George Raper
  George Raper (19 September 1769 – 1797) was a naval officer and illustrator.
  Raper was born to Henry and Catherine Raper in London, England on 19 September 1769. On 20 August 1783 he joined the Royal Navy's HMS Rose as a captain's servant. After further service on HMS Racehorse, he joined HMS Sirius on 15 November 1786. The Sirius, commanded by Captain John Hunter, was the flagship of the First Fleet, which under Commodore Arthur Phillip transported convicts from England to New South Wales in Australia. On 30 September 1787, while the First Fleet was sailing from Rio de Janeiro to Capetown, George Raper became a midshipman. Raper took his paint box with him, containing a larger set of paints than that of his captain, John Hunter, who was also an artist. Raper's charts, and his paintings of ports such as Teneriffe and Rio de Janeiro, were part of his evidence of competence for his promotion to midshipman. The First Fleet arrived in Botany Bay in January 1788.
  On 2 October 1788, the Sirius with Raper on board set sail from Port Jackson for the Dutch settlement of Cape Town, to get supplies for the starving Australian colony. Raper continued to paint; his watercolour of 'ice-islands' on this journey is held at the Natural History Museum, London. In February 1789, the Sirius left Cape Town loaded with twelve months provisions for the ship’s company, six months flour for the whole settlement and other stores. Raper probably purchased paper in Cape Town; most of his paintings after this date are on Dutch paper.

  Gregory Macalister Mathews CBE (10 September 1876 - 27 March 1949) was an Australian amateur ornithologist.
  Mathews made his fortune in mining shares, and moved to England around 1900.
  He was Chairman of the British Ornithologists' Club from 1935-1938. He was made CBE in 1939 for his services to ornithology.
  Mathews described M. s. musgravei, currently recognized as a subspecies of the Splendid Fairy-wren, in 1922 as a new species of bird.
  In 1939 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union, and served as its President 1946-1947. He donated his ornithological library to the National Library of Australia in 1939.
  Mathews contributed numerous papers to the ornithological literature, especially on avian taxonomy and nomenclature, as well as founding, funding, editing and being the principal contributor to the journal The Austral Avian Record. • Henry Denham
  Henry Denham was one of the outstanding English printers of the sixteenth century.
  He was apprenticed to Richard Tottel and took up the freedom of the Stationers' Company on August 30, 1560. In 1564 he set up his own printing house in White Cross Street, Cripplegate, but in the following year he moved to Paternoster Row, at the sign of the Star, where he remained for many years. His printing office was well supplied with good type in all sizes, from nonpareil to great primer, and he had a fine range of initial letters, ornaments and borders. He was particularly fond of arranging his titles with a lace border formed of printers' flowers and showed much ingenuity in their arrangement.
  When Henry Bynneman died in 1583, he appointed Denham and Ralph Newbery to be his executors. Shortly after this it is thought that Denham started the Eliot's Court Printing House.
  Denham was an industrious printer and in 1583 was returned as having four presses; in 1586-7 and 1588-9 he served as Junior Warden of the Stationers' Company, but he never became Master. About 1585 he removed to Aldersgate Street. The last entry under his name occurs in the Registers on December 3, 1589, after which nothing more is heard of him.

• Henry Lidgbird Ball
  Henry Lidgbird Ball (1756–1818) was a Royal Navy officer, best known for discovering and exploring Lord Howe Island.
  In 1788, having previously commanded HMS Supply, Lieutenant Ball commanded the vessel entrusted with shipping the first group of settlers from Botany Bay to Norfolk Island.
  Between 1788 and 1790, Ball explored the area around Port Jackson and took part in the capture of the Aborigine, Arabanoo, on 31 December 1788, in addition to revisiting Lord Howe's Island and Norfolk Island.
  After falling ill in January 1791, Ball returned to England to convalesce. Leaving Australia in November 1791, he landed at Plymouth in April 1792 with the first kangaroo to be shipped to England on board his ship.
  Ball returned to duty in December 1792 and was made a captain in 1795, in which position he served with distinction between 1795 and 1812, when he went on to half pay in semi-retirement. On 4 June 1814 Ball was promoted to rear admiral of the Blue.
  Ball married on 17 June 1802 in London to Charlotte Foster. She died a year later and, on 19 July 1810 at Kingston upon Thames, he married for a second time, to Anne Georgianna Henrietta Johnston. Ball had one daughter, Ann Maria.

  James Francis Lacey (1934 – 31 January 2008, age 73) was an Australian whose work was considered instrumental in the development of the Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, New South Wales, as its general manager from 1988 to 1992. Lacey also served as the administrator of Lord Howe Island beginning in 1983.
  Lacey was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1934. He resided in the city until he was 29 years old. He moved to Young, New South Wales, with his wife, Judith, and their oldest daughter, Elizabeth, in 1963.
  The family moved again in 1971, this time to the city of Wagga Wagga. There, Lacey was employed as a Regional Development Officer for The Riverina.
  Jim Lacey was appointed the administrator of Lord Howe Island in 1983 by the Department of the NSW Government of the Premier of New South Wales, Neville Wran. Lacey was praised for his work as administrator of the island, which is a territory within New South Wales.
  Lacey's work on Lord Howe Island was noticed by John Kelly,^{[disambiguation needed ]} the chief zoo Director of Parks and Wildlife. Kelly asked Lacey to join the Western Plains Zoo in 1988 as general manager, an offer which Lacey accepted. (The Western Plains Zoo is now called the Taronga Western Plains Zoo). During his time at the zoo, Lacey worked to grow and develop the zoo's facilities, while maintaining an open-range concept for the animals.

  John MacGillivray (18 December 1821 – 6 June 1867) was a Scottish-naturalist, active in Australia between 1842 and 1867.
  MacGillivray was born in Aberdeen, the son of ornithologist William MacGillivray. He took part in three of the Royal Navy's surveying voyages in the Pacific. In 1842 he sailed as naturalist on board HMS Fly, despatched to survey the Torres Strait, New Guinea, and the east coast of Australia, returning to England in 1846.
  In the same year he was appointed as naturalist on the voyages of HMS Rattlesnake (Captain Owen Stanley), collecting in Australian waters at Port Curtis, Rockingham Bay, Port Molle, Cape York, Gould Island, Lizard Island and Moreton Island in Queensland, Port Essington (Northern Territory) and visiting Sydney (New South Wales) on several occasions. The expedition was in Hobart, Tasmania, in June 1847 and also surveyed in Bass Strait, and on the southern coast of New Guinea and the Louisiade Archipelago. On this series of voyages his most notable achievement was to make records of the aboriginal languages of the peoples he encountered. His account of the voyages was published in London.

  Māori people
  The Māori (Māori pronunciation: [ˈmaːɔɾi], English: /ˈmaʊəri/) are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand. The Māori originated with settlers from eastern Polynesia, who arrived in New Zealand in several waves of canoe voyages at some time before 1300 CE. Over several centuries in isolation, the Polynesian settlers developed a unique culture that became known as the "Māori", with their own language, a rich mythology, distinctive crafts and performing arts. Early Māori formed tribal groups, based on eastern Polynesian social customs and organisation. Horticulture flourished using plants they introduced, and later a prominent warrior culture emerged.
  The arrival of Europeans to New Zealand starting from the 17th century brought enormous change to the Māori way of life. Māori people gradually adopted many aspects of Western society and culture. Initial relations between Māori and Europeans were largely amicable, and with the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 the two cultures coexisted as part of a new British colony. Rising tensions over disputed land sales led to conflict in the 1860s. Social upheaval, decades of conflict and epidemics of introduced disease took a devastating toll on the Māori population, which went into a dramatic decline. But by the start of the 20th century the Māori population had begun to recover, and efforts were made to increase their standing in wider New Zealand society. • Neville Coleman
  Neville Coleman (born 1938) is an Australian naturalist, underwater nature photographer, writer, publisher and educator. In 2007, Coleman was inducted to the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame.
  Coleman started scuba diving in 1963, exploring Sydney Harbour. Later he joined a scientific study group and in 1969 undertook a project aiming to document entire marine life of Australia, using underwater photography.
  His first book, Australian marine fishes in colour was published in 1974, and he subsequently authored more than 50 books.
  Coleman discovered many marine creatures new to science. Several species of fish, nudibranchs and other invertebrates have been named after him, including a mantis shrimp Lysiosquilla colemani, a nudibranch Chromodoris colemani, and a pygmy seahorse Hippocampus colemani.
  Neville Coleman died on the 4th of May 2012 at 4:55am, of natural causes in his sleep.

  Tim Flannery
  Timothy Fridtjof Flannery (born 28 January 1956) is an Australian mammalogist, palaeontologist, environmentalist and global warming activist. He is the Chief Commissioner of the Australian Climate Commission, an independent body providing information on climate change to the Australian public.
  Flannery was named Australian of the Year in 2007 and is currently a professor at Macquarie University. He is also the chairman of the Copenhagen Climate Council, an international climate change awareness group. His sometimes controversial views on shutting down conventional coal fired power stations for electricity generation in the medium term are frequently cited in the media.
  Flannery was raised in a Catholic family in the Melbourne suburb of Sandringham, close to Port Philip Bay, where he learned to fish and scuba dive and became aware of marine pollution and its effects on living organisms. He completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at La Trobe University in 1977, and then took a change of direction to complete a Master of Science degree in Earth Science at Monash University in 1981. He then left Melbourne for Sydney, enjoying its subtropical climate and species diversity. In 1984, Flannery earned a doctorate at the University of New South Wales in Palaeontology for his work on the evolution of macropods (kangaroos).

  William Grant Milne
  William Grant Milne (?-1866), was a Scottish botanist.
  A gardener at the Edinburgh Botanic Garden, Milne joined the HMS Herald expedition to the southwestern Pacific (1852-1856) as a botanist. The expedition visited, inter alia, Lord Howe Island, New South Wales and Western Australia. Milne was initially accompanied by fellow Scots botanist John MacGillivray, who left the ship in 1855 after a dispute with Captain Henry Mangles Denham.
  It is ironic that Milne, the discoverer of several plants, including the rare New Caledonian tree Meryta denhamii which he found growing on the Isle of Pines in 1853 and sent to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew, should have botanist Berthold Carl Seemann name the plant Meryta denhamii after Captain Denham (for whom the town of Denham, Western Australia was also named). The plant was described from specimens that had flowered in a greenhouse in Kew in 1860.
