Alan Freed's Go Johnny Go trailer
Alan Freed was a radio personality and creator of the term "Rock and Roll". He was born near Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on December 15, 1921. His birth name was Albert James Freed. When he was a child, Freed's family moved to Salem, Ohio. Always interested in music, he played trombone as a teenager in a band called the Sultans of Swing. Freed was hired by radio station WKST in New Castle, Pennsylvania, in 1942. He became a sportscaster for WKBN in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1943. Two years later, Freed became a disc jockey at WAKR in Akron, Ohio. He remained in Akron until 1949, when he moved to Cleveland to join the staff of WXEL-TV. In 1951, Freed began hosting a rhythm and blues program on WJW radio in Cleveland, using the nickname "Moondog." His program soon had a large popular following. It was during this period that Freed referred to the music he played as "rock & roll" for the first time. At first, much of his audience was African-American. Soon many other Americans began listening to this new style of music. Freed is credited with hosting the first live rock & roll concert in 1952. Freed moved to WINS radio in New York City in 1954, and "rock & roll" became a common term across the nation. Freed worked with a number of live "rock & roll" concerts which were broadcast by radio across the country. He also acted in a number of movies with musical themes. In 1957, Freed began hosting a live show on ABC television. In 1959, Freed was caught up in the broadcasting "payola ...

Rock Rock Rock - Alan Freed Film 1956
Rock, Rock, Rock is a 1956 black-and-white motion picture featuring performances from a number of early rock 'n' roll stars, such as Chuck Berry, LaVern Baker, Teddy Randazzo, The Moonglows, The Flamingos, and The Teenagers with Frankie Lymon as lead singer. Future West Side Story cast member David Winters is also featured. Famed disk jockey Alan Freed makes an appearance as himself. The voice of the main character (Dori Graham) was sung by Connie Francis. The movie has a fairly simple plot: teenage girl Dori Graham (played by then 13-year-old Tuesday Weld) can't convince her dad to buy her a strapless gown and has to get the money together herself in time for the prom. The soundtrack album, also titled Rock, Rock, Rock, is nowadays widely regarded to be Chuck Berry's first album. Many of the artists featured in the film do not appear on the album, and only four songs on the album ("Over and Over Again," "I Knew From the Stars," "You Can't Catch Me," and "Would I Be Crying") actually appear in the film. Both Jack Collins and Valerie Harper (who makes a brief appearance as an extra in the crowd at the prom) made their film debut in Rock, Rock, Rock. Featured songs "Rock, Rock, Rock" -- Jimmy Cavallo & His House Rockers "I Never Had A Sweetheart" -- Connie Francis "The Things Your Heart Needs" -- Teddy Randazzo "Rock Pretty Baby" -- Ivy Schulman "Rock & Roll Boogie" -- Alan Freed & His Rock & Roll Band w/"Big Al" Sears (saxophone) "I Knew From The Start" -- The Moonglows ...

Alan Freed and His Rock and Roll Band - Rock and Roll Boogie (from the movie Rock Rock Rock - 1956)
Disk jockey Alan Freed is widely credited with coining the term "rock and roll" to describe the uptempo black R&B; records he played as early as 1951 on Cleveland radio station WJW. Freed called himself "the Moondog" and billed his show as the "Moondog Rock 'n' Roll Party." A tireless and enthusiastic advocate of the music he played, Freed kept time to his favorite records by beating his hands on a phone book. He called it rock and roll because "it seemed to suggest the rolling, surging beat of the music." The Freed-sponsored 1952 Moondog Coronation Ball in Cleveland is believed to be the nation's first rock and roll concert. After conquering Cleveland, he took his show to WINS New York. There, he further spread the gospel of rock and roll via TV, movies and the celebrated all-star shows he promoted at Brooklyn's Paramount Theater. Those stage shows remain the essential rock and roll revues of the era. Later, the tangled favors of this period would come back to haunt him in the payola scandals of the late Fifties. Amid the atmosphere of a witch hunt, Freed steadfastly maintained that he never played a record he didn't like. Nonetheless, he was blackballed within the business and died a broken man in 1965. Alan Freed and some doo-wop
Alan Freed was probably the best known disc-jockey of the 50s. His biggest success was in NYC. He also promoted and MC'd several live concerts. Most of these shows had concert programs that you could buy. These are very hard to come these days. I borrowed several covers to these programs from the official Alan Freed website for this slide show.

45 RPM: Gil Bernal - The Whip (Alan Freed WJW aircheck)
The Whip written by Gil Bernal, Jerry Leiber, and Mike Stoller performed by Gil Bernal issued as Spark 45x102 in March 1954 "Hello again everybody and welcome to the Moondog Rock & Roll Party, another big Tuesday night rock & roll get together with all the gang in the Moondog kingdom. And, away we go with Gil Bernal, pickin' up that tenor horn to blow it strong on the Spark label and 'The Whip!'" - Alan Freed, WJW (Cleveland), 6 April 1954 In 1997, I heard this great aircheck of rock and roll radio pioneer, Alan Freed. From the Todd Rhodes' "Blues For Red Boy" opener, Freed's larger than life voice welcomes you in. The record starts and "HEY! WHOA-YEAH!" The music was the thing that kept you listening and Freed's enegry seemed to leap out of the speaker. He was listening with you. He was digging the sounds just as you were. This was a man that truly loved what he was doing. And, it was not just Freed, cats like Porky Chedwick, Dick "Huggy Boy" Hugg, Hunter Handcock, Douglas "Jocko" Henderson, Tommy Smalls, Georgie Woods, John Richbourg, Bill "Hoss" Allen. . . the list goes on and on! Radio, circa 2010, is not that way anymore. Personality is gone away and mindless card readers are all that are left. There is a person talking at you rather than to you. And, that person might be talking at an audience from several different localtions via that personal technology called voice tracking. This record was such a find for me. It took me a good 7-8 years before I ever found a ...

ALAN FREED TRIBUTE - Trade Martin's acapella "ONLY A DREAM"
ALAN FREED was the first and greatest rock n' roll DJ. He was at the height of his career when the 1950s 'race music' craze began and when the 45rpm came into being. I had the pleasure of performing on a show of his in early 1964. I hope you enjoy this tribute video to this legendary DJ. Regards, Trade Martin.
