Yiddish Song--Dos Lid fun Bessarabia/Oif di felder fun Bessarabia
Dos Lid fun Bessarabia/Oif di felder fun Bessarabia The Song of Bessarabia/In the fields of Bessarabia Itzik Manger/ arr. Belarsky Soloist: Anthony (Mordechai Tzvi) Russell Accompaniment: Kathy Burns Sound Engineering: Lee Danziger www.facebook.com/anthonyrussellbass I've heard so many songs But I've tired of them all. One song alone has stayed with me And I can't forget it Oh, the fields of Bessarabia! Land of joy and land of sorrow, When I remember your valleys, How I weep and I mourn! Once there was a young shepherd A child among children Grazing his father's Goats lambs sheep and cows. The young shepherd, the little one A little lamb he lost. Oh! he wept. Oh! he lamented. Oh, the fields of Bessarabia! Land of joy and land of sorrow, When I remember your valleys, How I weep and I mourn! The shepherd cries, the little one Under the blue twilight Oh, oh, he cries As the day falls in a faint. Oh, the fields of Bessarabia! Land of joy and land of sorrow, When I remember your valleys, How I weep and I mourn!

Mishka Ziganoff - Bessarabia Doina (classic klezmer accordion)
A doina followed by the ubiquitous "Oriental Hora" heard on many klezmer albums. From Josh Horowitz's essay on the klezmer accordion (available on the Budowitz website): "Misha Demitro Tsiganoff was born on 15 January 1889, in Odessa, the son of Yanchie Demitro Tsiganoff and Vorgja Nickolarna, and died in February of 1967. He lived in Brooklyn and Manhattan, was Christian and spoke fluent Yiddish. [...] Tsiganoff began his recording career in New York in 1919 and made his last solo record ten years later in 1929. In the 1930s he was billed as "The Gypsy Accordionist" on Philadelphia radio WPEN. He performed frequently with Molly Picon, the Pincus Sisters, David Medoff and Moishe Oysher, among others." The photo in the video was taken from this essay as well and is credited to Henry Sapoznik.

The Bessarabian Bulgarians
There are up to 1,5 million ethnic Bulgarians in the historic region of Bessarabia, now divided between Moldova and Ukraine. They settled the area following the Russo-Turkish wars of early 19th century. Today the Bessarabian diaspora apply for Bulgarian citizenship and university scholarships in record numbers. I hope they all come back home!

My trip to the Republic of Moldova ( Bessarabia )
see: en.wikipedia.org Today's Republic of Moldova corresponds with most of the Romanian historical province of Bessarabia. Stalin's abusive Ultimatum of 1940 forced Romania to give up Bessarabia in 1940. Most of Bessarabia was turned into the "Soviet Socialist Republic of Moldova", while the 3 southern counties of Bessarabia were given to the Soviet Socialist Republic of Ukraine. In the SSR of Moldova, a massive plan of Russification began. The plan included the deportation of ethnic Romanians to Siberia and Central Russia, the colonisation of Bessarabia with Russian-speaking population, the prohibition of the Latin alphabet, the suppression of churches, and the assassination of the Romanian intellectuals who opposed the regime. After 1940, Romania entered the Second World War and tried to free Bessarabia from the Soviet occupation. Despite of all the battles fought, Bessarabia remained under Soviet occupation. The Soviet Union applied its plan of Russification, but the success was only partial. Although written in the Cyrillic alphabet, the Romanian language remained the native language of most of the population. Ethnic Romanians remained the oldest and most numerous inhabitants of Bessarabia. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Moldova became an indepedent republic and the Latin alphabet was reintroduced at the request of the Romanian majority. The anthem chosen was "Awaken thee, Romanian !". When the Communist Party re-gained influence in Moldova, they changed the ...

1941 Advance through Bessarabia
July 30, 1941. The Wehrmacht reports that the operation is proceeding on course across the vast front from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea. In Bessarabia, along the advance routes are ever new units are heading towards the fomer Rumanian-Soviet border. A search for Soviet troops in the vast forests. The lead troops have a found rersistence. In difficult terrain, the enemy has set up strong positions and conducted attacks upon supply troops. Artillery goes into action. They prepare the ground for the infantry attack. A well-concealed observation post. A radio operator transmits targets to the batteries. The enemy is smashed. The infantry go over to the attack. The Bolsheviks emerge from the forests, swamps and marshes. Resistence has been broken. A typical Soviet tree obstacle. Before us the Dniester river. This river a component of the Stalin line - has been crossed at numerous points. Panzer units place enemy positions on the far bank under fire. A new bridgehead is established. Assault boats carry assualt troops across. Military engineers follow behind. In a few hours, they have built a secure crossing. Heavy weapons move across. Meanwhile, the advance troops have moved further eastwards and taken numerous prisoners. Here a small selection of especially frightening types of these Bolshevik subhumans, who on orders of Stalin were to subject all of Europe to murder and flames.

1941 German-Rumanian advance into Bessarabia
July 16, 1941. Deutsche Wochenschau No. 567. As with the Finns in the northern front, the troops of the Rumanian army battle side by side with German troops on the vast front against the Bolshevik world enemy. Rumanian infantry on the march. The Soviets have tried breaking through the German-Rumanian front, but their attacks have been beaten back. Here a bridge destroyed by the Bolsheviks is being quickly repaired. The local population helps the German soldiers with the difficult labour. Over the Prut 'river in Bessarabia. Dust and heat pervades the roads. The local population greets the German soldiers as their liberators from the Bolshevik yoke. Entry into Pomeshaniy. Here the Wehrmacht has liberated the Ukrainian people from the rule of the Bolsheviks. Salt and bread as signs of friendship. Flight rout of the Russians: not one house remains standing. Everything has been burnt according to Soviet orders. Down with the propaganda from Moscow.

Bessarabia Ghost Tapes
Soundwalk collected hundreds of recorded tapes of the Holocaust survivors of Bessarabia, and embarked through the region to conduct field recordings of the 27 towns where these communities existed to place the sound sources in context with their historical environment, from Kishinev in Moldova to Tiraspol in Transnistria to Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi along the Black Sea to Chernovtsy in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine. The field recordings were all made in the depths of night, as an echo of a vanished world that will never rise again.

The Danube Exodus - Film by Peter Forgacs
The Hungarian filmmaker Péter Forgács is one of the most prominent so-called found footage filmmakers. In particular home movies and amateur films serve as the basis of stories he reveals and compose by using recovered personal and historical events.
He is primarily interested in the way in which these films seem to depict only happy moments, but on closer consideration they also appear to tell a hidden history, which can be brought back to the surface by the recycling filmmaker.
In the travelogue The Danube Exodus, he documents the Jewish exodus from Slovakia just before the beginning of World War II. In two boats, a group of nine hundred Slovak, Austrian Jews tried to reach the Black Sea via the river Danube, in order to get to Palestine from there. Forgács based his film on the amateur films of Captain Nándor Andrásovits, the captain of one of the boats.
He filmed his passengers while they prayed, slept and even got married. At the end of this journey, it is clear that the boat will not return empty: a reverse exodus takes place, this time of repatriating Bessarabian Germans, fleeing to the Third Reich because of the Soviet invasion of Bessarabia.

Klezmer Pioneers [1905~1952] - Bessarabian Hora
Klezmer Pioneers: European & American Recordings, 1905-1952 Various Artists Release Date: Jun 1, 1993 Recording Date: 1905-1952 Label: Rounder Review [allmusic.com] A nice collection of very early recordings of klezmer, roughly half from Bucharest and half from New York. These ones cover the span from 1905 to 1952, essentially starting with the advent of the flat-disc format in Eastern Europe (actual cylinder recordings aren't represented here). There's a decent breadth of sound here, ranging from the familiar orchestral sound of New York klezmer bands catering primarily to non-Jewish audiences to the solo tsimbl (hammered dulcimer) of Eastern Europe. The main item to note here is the way that the album catalogs the semi-gradual shift from the importance of the violin as the primary instrument to the reign of the clarinet. There's some beautiful music on this album, but if you're a klezmer fan who's been self-fed the modern klezmer of groups like the Klezmatics and the Klezmonauts, be forewarned that this is a heavily different sound. Nathan Hollander - Bessarabia Doina (Klezmer Harmonium)
A doina by klezmer harmonium player of the 1920s, Nathan Hollander. Writes Bob Cohen of Di Naye Kapelye -- "Nathan Hollander was a klezmer harmonium player in the 1920s and, perhaps, the worst musician ever to record. Predating techno by over seventy years, he began his musical career by owning a recording studio, and then issuing his own 78s mechanically pounding out Yiddish songs and dances on a pump organ. He makes mistakes, his rhythm is absolutely crap, occasionally he stops and forgets the tune --in a word, wonderful! Nobody will ever reissue a Nathan Hollander 78." Josh Horowitz, in his essay about the klezmer accordion (available on the Budowitz website), mentions the "persistent, dedicated, utterly unavoidable recordings of Mr Nathan Hollander [...] He is the perfect performer for ideologists who would like to see folk music as the generic property of the common people, rather than the inspired individual." Horowitz also mentions a doina, maybe this one: "His performance of one doina is a superb example of primordialism; in it we encounter the Ur-doina, which is too difficult to uncover in other's performances, as they are inevitably belaboured with idiosyncratic ornaments and cryptic diversions. Hollander shows us the genuine, pure, almost prenatal Jewish expression of the doina-- and of other genres as well -- by virtue of a disarming delivery."
