Nanaimo Family's Dream Home Turns into House of Horrors
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http NANAIMO - A young Nanaimo family says they are out thousands of dollars and have nowhere to live because the waterfront house that they were having built is faulty and unsafe to live in. The Mayer family says a month before they planned to move into their new home they discovered issues with the properties' foundation and structure. They alerted the contractor and engineer hired to oversee the construction process but their argument was refuted, with the companies claiming the house was safe to live in. They decided to seek a second opinion over the safety of the structure and say a second engineer inspected the house and stated it was not structurally sound and must be rebuilt. The family is now suing Bayview Engineering Limited and Edgerock Construction over the project. The family of five say they are not covered by insurance because BC's Homeowner Protection Act does not apply unless the home is currently being occupied. They claim they cannot receive an occupancy permit because the structure has been deemed unsafe to live in. Bayview Engineering and Edgerock Construction declined to supply CTV News with any comments today regarding the property. Follow Chandler Grieve on Twitter: www.twitter.com

Nanaimo to Remove Landmark Colliery Dam
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http NANAIMO -- A flood of mixed opinions is pouring in after city council approved a plan to remove the Lower and Middle Colliery Dams. Last night city council approved the plans to start the deconstruction process of the two dams, after they were handed a study by city engineers that revealed the dams would likely overflow if a natural disaster hit the mid-island. The dams were built in 1910 and 1911 and are one of the last landmarks tying back to Nanaimo's former mining industry. Many in harbour city say the dams act as a rare oasis in the heart of the busy city. For years the dams have been used by fisherman, joggers and swimmers. But the city says the neighbouring communities safety takes priority and are not waiting for a natural disaster to occur to see what would happen to the water running through the dams. Today, they handed out information packets throughout the Harewood community advising residents of the city's plan. The packets included an evacuation route should the dams break before they are removed by next summer. Follow Chandler Grieve on Twitter: www.twitter.com

Overnight Gun Shots Directed Towards South Nanaimo Home
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http NANAIMO - A south Nanaimo home was peppered with overnight gun fire on Wednesday. Despite numerous people inside at the time of the early morning shooting nobody was struck by any bullets and no injuries were reported. The gun fire left the back door of the home in the 600 block of Nicol Street covered with seven bullet holes. Investigators also found bullet holes inside the rental property. Nobody from inside the home reported the shots and it took a tip from the public to lead police to the address. Police have no suspects or motive and will not say if more than one gun was used. Neighbours say the house is known for all the wrong reasons and is a haven for drug activity. Police have also attended to the home before. They are now asking anyone with any information to contact the RCMP. Follow Chandler Grieve on Twitter: www.twitter.com

Nanaimo Cat Returns Home in Duct Tape
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http NANAIMO - Nanaimo cat owners are being warned to keep a close eye on their pets. A cat came home this morning with its paws wrapped in duct tape. The cat's name is Nellie and this is the second time it's been targeted. A few weeks ago its owner, Jennifer Paloposki found Nellie's feet bound with green painters tape. "I think these people have gone too far," says Paloposki. She quickly took Nellie to the Island Veterinary Hospital on Bowen Road. It's the fourth case of duct taped paws the hospital has seen. "I am always embarrassed being human when I see something like this," said the Hospital's Ken Langelier. The tape was so tightly wrapped on the cat's paws and tail that it ripped the cat's fur off. "It's animal cruelty. As far as the cat goes it obviously in distress the way it was chewing at the tape. They use their tail for balance and it's uncomfortable for the cat." RCMP is leading the investigation and BCSPCA Animal Cruelty Investigators will assist. Follow Jett Bassi on Twitter: www.twitter.com

Nanaimo Woman Captures Cougar Eating Deer on Camera
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http NANAIMO - A nanaimo woman had an unexpected first row seat for nature in his rawest form. The women watched from awe from her balcony as a cougar prepared to eat a deer. The whole event was captured through five photographs that the women managed to snap of the rare nature sighting. Nanaimo Looks to Become Cruise Ship Destination
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http NANAIMO - The Nanaimo Port Authority is hoping to put the harbour city on the map as a destination stop for American Cruise Ships. The new Port Authority terminal that opened in 2011 saw four cruise ships come through Nanaimo last year. This season five ships are scheduled to drop anchor in Nanaimo and in 2013 the Port Authority is planning to bring nine ships into town. Bernie Dumas, President of the Nanaimo Port Authority, says that he hopes to create a niche market in the cruise ship industry by promoting Nanaimo's first nation culture and art work. The first ship arrives in Nanaimo on May 5th and is expected to inject close to $200 000 dollars into the local economy. Follow Chandler Grieve on Twitter: www.twitter.com

Secret Naval Project Has Nanaimo Roots
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http NANAIMO - A top secret naval project is being developed under the radar ar Nanaimo's shipyard. The mid-Island operation has partnered with a boat building organization on the east coast, and are making plans for a small military grade vessel never before seen on the open ocean. "This is the type of technology that can deal with terrorists, pirates and those type of people'" said Nanaimo Shipyard President Ron van Wackem. The proposed two million dollar small sea vessels would come equipt with bullet proof skin, and sub machine guns standard. The major draw that is attracting attention to the cloak and dagger project is the designers push to make the boat unmanned. Some models are being designed to work remotely from a satellite uplink. Even in the early development stages this project is impressing those who keep an eye on Nanaimo's growth as a technology leader. "It is one thing to have a company that can have a few jobs at it, but if it can become a world leader in an area we can get so much more out of it." said Mid Island Science, Technology and innovation council Board Chair Michael Reid. Canada's military has shown some interest in the project still in development, but so far the strongest excitement is coming from foreign government. Due to the still secretive nature of the initiative those countries cannot be named. Follow Scott Cunningham on Twitter: www.twitter.com

Iconic Downtown Nanaimo Restaurant Suddenly Closes
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http NANAIMO - The Modern Cafe, an iconic downtown Nanaimo restaurant, suddenly closed its doors Wednesday, leaving employees and regular customers stunned. The restaurant has been a staple in the downtown core for nearly five decades and the heart and soul of Nanaimo's Commercial Street. But the owner never opened the doors Wednesday, and today he posted this message on The Modern Cafe's Facebook page. "It is with great sadness today that I announce that the Modern Cafe is closed and has ceased operation under current ownership. I am so very sorry for the trouble and anguish that I have caused staff, customers, vendors, and the city of Nanaimo," Scott Cooper. Cooper was named Nanaimo's "Business Leader of the Year" at the 2012 Sterling Awards. He told CTV News that the restaurant had been struggling financially for months and he had no other choice. He insists the closure is not a "midnight run" and says his employees will be paid out for hours worked. However, 20 employees are now searching for new jobs and wondering, along with many in the Harbour City, about the future of this historic Nanaimo restaurant. Downtown Nanaimo Restaurant Closes Doors Overnight Leaving Employees Fighting for Pay Cheques
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http NANAIMO - Employees at a downtown Nanaimo restaurant and coffee shop say they've been suddenly left out in the cold. Until Monday, they worked at the Front Street Bar and Grill and the Dancing Goat Coffee Shop on Front Street. But in the middle of the night, under the cover of darkness, the businesses were emptied out and suddenly shut down. Employees are now claiming the banks are refusing to cash cheques from the owner and are now out hundreds of dollars in unpaid hours. The owner says he has sunk close to $200000 into the operation and simply had no other option but to close. Follow Chandler Grieve on Twitter: www.twitter.com

Downtown Nanaimo Building Drawing Ire of Public
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http NANAIMO - Some refer to it as the "Purple Dinosaur" of downtown Nanaimo. The former home of the now defunct A&B; Sound on the corner of Terminal and Commercial has sat vacant since 2008. It's large, around 19 000 square feet, and takes up nearly an entire corner block. Many in the area feel that it has become a giant eyesore and hindering the development of a central block in Downtown Nanaimo. The Vancouver based owner of the building has been working with Colliers Real Estate Agency to find a suitable tenant for the large structure, but have been unsuccessful so far. The owner and agency are now weighing their options for the building, including looking into possibly demolishing the aging structure or making it attractive for multiple different businesses to occupy at once. The Downtown Business Improvement Association says they would welcome any move that would revitalize the area. Meanwhile, local businesses along Commercial Street say the derelict building is becoming a deterrent for foot traffic in the area. Follow Chandler Grieve on Twitter: www.twitter.com

Bowen Park, Nanaimo, ca 1969
Nanaimo photographer Leslie Englefield shot this film around 1970. In 1993, Englefield's large collection of photographs and films was donated to the Nanaimo Community Archives. Over time, the film deteriorated and, in 2012, was converted to digital format before it was too late to save it. We've posted it on YouTube so that everyone can enjoy it, from anywhere. If you would like to find out more about this collection or any of the other materials held at the Archives, please email us at nanaimoarchives@gmail.com or visit our website at nanaimoarchives.ca Many thanks to Greg Peacock for making this posting possible. Nanaimo Cabbies Want Cameras in Cars
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http NANAIMO - Nanaimo cab drivers are fearing for their safety after another attack. Last saturday, AC Taxi Driver Sunny Bhullar was dispatched to call at a gas station in North Nanaimo. He picked up the customer and drove him to The Cambie bar. Once they arrived, the passenger refused to pay the fare. Bhullar threatened to call police and that's when the man repeatedly punched him in the back of the head. The punches were so hard they knocked out Bhullar. When he came to, he used his radio to call for help. Other taxi drivers came to his rescue and took Bhullar to the hospital. Sunny says he has welts on the back of his head and is having massive headaches. Its the second time he has been attacked in the past weeks. Other drivers are now fearing for their safety. Rashpaul Singh Parmar says its time the company installed security cameras or a safety shield in the cars to help protect the drivers. Parmar says that the drivers are in vulnerable positions and need some sort of protection. AC Taxi President Gary Smith says if they install security cameras in the cars then the cost will be off setted by the customer. Bhullar says he has no choice but to drive cab. He is the bread winner in the family and needs to get behind the wheel. He hopes his company will install the cameras in the cars so he feels some sort of security.
