Menander the great
Menander I Soter "The Saviour" (known as Milinda in Indian sources) was one of the rulers of the Indo-Greek Kingdom from either 165 or 155 BC to 130 BC. His territories covered the eastern dominions of the divided Greek empire of Bactria (modern day ولایت بلخ or Bactria Province) and extended to India (modern day Pakistani provinces of the NWFP, Punjab and parts of Himachal Pradesh and the Jammu region). His capital is supposed to have been Sagala, a prosperous city in northern Punjab (believed to be modern Sialkot), Pakistan. He is one of the few Bactrian kings mentioned by Greek authors, among them Apollodorus of Artemita, quoted by Strabo, who claims that the Greeks from Bactria were even greater conquerors than Alexander the Great, and that Menander was one of the two Bactrian kings, with Demetrius, who extended their power farthest into India.

Pompeii. House of the Menander I.10.4
The House of the Menander at Pompeii is so-called because of a painting of the Greek playwright. The house lies close to the theatre in central southern Pompeii and is one of the town's biggest though you would never guess from the outside. It is built round key visual axes, one of which is the view from the fauces entrance passageway right through the house and across the peristyle. The house was modified and enlarged over a long period of time and has been the subject of a recent massive programme of analysis and restoration. Despite this, it is still not open to the public and has to be accessed through a special permit from the Soprintendenza. The house is part of the prescribed content for the UK-based OCR examination board's A-level paper in Classical Civilisation called Cities of Roman Italy (CC6). A huge silver treasure hoard was found here by excavators, and this is now in Naples Museum. Circumstantial evidence has linked the house to the family of Nero's wife Poppaea but this is uncertain. However, there can be no question that the house was owned at the very least by one of Pompeii's most prominent citizens, either a man of the decurial class or an extremely wealthy freedman.

Menander's Grouch, Part 1: Prologue
Within the High School Project "Spirit of Anthic Olympism" by Gimnazija Indjija, a group of pupils staged Menander's Grouch. Pan [enters from shrine] Think of this place as a part of Attike Phyle, to be exactand the Nymphs' shrine I've come from belongs to the Phylasians(...) This farmstead — the one here on the right Knemon lives there, a man who shuns other men, grouches at everyone, and dislikes crowds. — Did I say "crowds"? (...)He has gladly talked in his life to no one, has spoken first to no one except — of necessity, since he is a neighbor and passes by — me, Pan. And he immediately regrets it, I'm sure. Anyhow, with a character like this, he still got married. His wife was a widow whose first husband had just died and left her with a son who was very small then. He fought with her not only every day all day but took up the better part of the night as well and lived miserably. A baby daughter came along — even worse. When things were so bad that nothing more could happen, and his life was bitter, pain upon pain, his wife left him and went back to live with her son, the one from her first marriage. He had a little farm, very small, here next door, where he supports — now not very well — his mother, himself, and a single faithful servant whom he inherited from his father. A fine young man the boy is already, with a mind beyond his years: the experience of troubles hastens maturity. Now the old man lives all alone with his daughter and a gray-haired serving woman ...

House of the Menander at Pompeii (I.10.4) with the Service Quarters
This is another walk-round the House of the Menander at Pompeii, this time starting in the extreme south-west in what are called the farm buildings alongside the slave quarters. Here equipment was stored for farming land outside the city walls. These rooms are not decorated and were accessed via an L-shaped corridor that ran behind the house's tricinlium. A side entrance to the house led to this corridor via a hall and led up to the peristyle. You can see how this enabled slaves to carry food and drink to the house's owners and how it must have felt walking up the narrow corridor to the grand painted rooms that surrounded the peristyle and atrium. The House of the Menander has been expensively restored but is rarely open to the public. This film was shot in October 2010 on one of those rare occasions. Note the evidence of heavy rain - a few days later the House of the Gladiators collapsed from the downpours and made international news. This film is of interest to anyone studying Pompeii, especially OCR's CC6 City Life in Roman Italy paper for AS-level Classical Civilization.

Syriac Menander
"Menander " the Sage said: ..." These words introduce a collection of wisdom sayings written in the Syriac language. The purpose of the author in drawing up this anthology of maxims was to show his readers how they could best live in a world in which good and evil, misfortune and fortune are mingled in an unpredictable way. Passing through a world of this nature, people need to be provided with direction, and the author gives such guidance by means of various counsels. The work is often designated a florilegium, and this seems to be a fairly good name for the collection, whose maxims have apparently been taken from the current stream of wisdom tradition. The exact number of sayings in the collection is not certain. In the present translation of the Florilegium, I have divided the text into 474 longer and shorter lines (including the opening and concluding lines) and abstained from any division into separate sayings. I did not wish to add another division to those already existing. J.-P. Audet counts 96, F. Schulthess 101, P. Riessler 103, and A. Baumstark no less than 153 sayings, preceding the closing line (474): "Menander has come to an end." The nature of the book may be adequately defined as wisdom literature in the form of practical rules for human behavior. Found in it are precepts, prohibitions, paradigms, and short characterizations of human attitudes. It does not contain a philosophical definition of wisdom, but instead a very pragmatic view of it (see II. 27-33 ...

Ancient Music - Trochaic Fragment + Four Settings From Menander's 'Epitrepontes'
Ancient Sumerians/Egyptians/Greeks -- a reconstruction of the few fragments of actual music that survived the ancient world, played on period instruments. Ancient music is music that developed in literate cultures, replacing prehistoric music. Ancient music refers to the various musical systems that were developed across various geographical regions such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia, India, China, Greece and Rome. Ancient music is designated by the characterization of the basic audible tones and scales. It may have been transmitted through oral or written systems. Among the Hurrian texts from Ugarit are some of the oldest known instances of written music, dating from c.1400 BC. A reconstructed hymn is replayed at the Urkesh webpage. Kilmer's tentative decipherment of the cuneiform tablets from Ugarit indicate that the simultaneous sounding of different pitches may have been practiced very early, perhaps by 2000 BCE. Ancient Greek musicians developed their own robust system of musical notation. The system was not widely used among Greek musicians, but nonetheless a modest corpus of notated music remains from Ancient Greece and Rome. The epics of Homer were originally sung with instrumental accompaniment, but no notated melodies from Homer are known. Several complete songs exist in ancient Greek musical notation. The Seikilos epitaph is the oldest surviving complete musical composition from the Greek tradition or from any tradition. Three complete hymns by Mesomedes of ...

Silver Treasure from the House of the Menander, Pompeii. AD79
This silver treasure hoard was found in a cellar at the House of the Menander (I.10.4) at Pompeii. The house was being renovated at the time of the eruption and this explains why it was in store and wasn't recovered by looters or scavengers after the event. It's a good example of prestige silverware which the Romans highly esteemed (more so than gold), with silversmiths using their styles as their individual trademarks. Now on display in Naples Archaeological Museum.

Within the High School Project "Spirit of Anthic Olympism" by Gimnazija Indjija, a group of pupils staged Menander's Grouch. Sik.[knocks on Knemon's door] It's me. Come out, dear little father. I want to talk with you. Kn. [opening his door] You again? Sik. Huh, what's this? Kn. You're getting me angry as if on purpose. Didn't I tell you not to come toward the door. Give me the lash, old woman. Sik. Never, but let me go! Kn. "Let me go?" Sik. My good man, by the gods! Kn. Come back here. (...)Sik. I came to ask you for an earthenware pot. Kn. I don't have an earthenware pot or a cleaver or salt or vinegar or anything else, but I've told all the people in this place quite simply not to come here. Sik. You didn't tell me. Kn. But I'm telling you now. (...) Sik.Fare thee well. Kn. I don't want any farewells from any one of you. Sik. Then don't fare well.Kn. Oh these incurable troubles. [exits into his house] Sik. Fine way he's plowed me over. What a thing it is to ask skillfully! Makes a difference, by Zeus![exits into shrine]
