Haworth is a rural village in the City of Bradford metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, England. It is located amongst the Pennines, 3 miles (4.8 km) southwest of Keighley and 10 miles (16 km) west of Bradford. The surrounding areas include Oakworth and Oxenhope. Nearby villages include Cross Roads, Stanbury and Lumbfoot.

Haworth is a tourist attraction, best known for its association with the Brontë sisters.

History[link]

Haworth is first mentioned as a settlement in 1209.^[1] The name may refer to a "hedged enclosure" or "hawthorn enclosure". The name was recorded as "Howorth" on a 1771 map.

Haworth's only traditional events were an annual service at Haworth Spa and the rush bearing. Spa Sunday died out in the early 20th century and the rush bearing ceremony has not been held for about twenty years. One of the modern events organised by the Haworth Traders' Association is "Scroggling the Holly" – an annual holly gathering event that takes place each November in Haworth. At the start of the festive season bands and Morris men lead a procession of children in Victorian costume, who follow the Holly Queen up the cobbles to her crowning ceremony on the church steps. The newly crowned Holly Queen unlocks the church gates to invite the spirit of Christmas into Haworth. Father Christmas then arrives bringing with him glad tidings and Christmas cheer to all.^[2]

In Haworth itself there are tea rooms such as 'Cobbles and Clay the Art Cafe', souvenir and antiquarian bookshops, restaurants, pubs and hotels (including the Black Bull, where Branwell Brontë's decline into alcoholism and opium addiction allegedly began). Haworth is a good base for exploring the principal attractions of Brontë Country, while still being close to the major cities of Bradford and Leeds. Further afield lies the historic city of York, and the spa towns of Harrogate and Ilkley – popular spa towns on the edge of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park to the north.

Fairtrade[link]

On 22 November 2002 Haworth was granted Fairtrade Village status.^[3] On 21 October 2005 Haworth Fairtrade officially signed an agreement to twin with Machu Picchu in Peru.^[4]

Haworth village is part of the parish of Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury,^[5] which in turn is part of the Bradford Metropolitan District Council, one of the five metropolitan boroughs of West Yorkshire.

Geography[link]

Haworth is situated above the Worth Valley amid the Pennine moors. It is 212 miles (341 km) north of London, 43 miles (69 km) west of York and 9 miles (14 km) west of Bradford.

Economy[link]

Tourism accounts for much of the local seasonal trade, with the major attractions being the steam railway and the Brontë parsonage.

Visitors are said to have been driven away due to the behaviour of a car clamper at the Changegate car park in Haworth. The car-clamping firm Carstoppers, who patrols the Changegate car park, was given the 'Dick Turpin' award by the RAC, for being the modern day equivalent of a highway robber. Complaints have been reported and motorists have been urged to park elsewhere.^[6][7]

Culture[link]

Haworth village centre

The first Haworth Arts Festival took place in 2000 and was repeated in 2001, but then ceased to operate because of the changing circumstances of the organisers. However a new group of Haworth residents took up the baton again in 2005 and began to build a festival which would combine performing arts, visual arts, street performance and a strong community involvement. The use of the local professional and semi-professional musicians, artists and performers has been coupled with a larger name for each festival, providing a local stage for the likes of John Cooper Clarke and John Shuttleworth. The festival continues to expand its horizons, slowly encompassing areas of the Worth Valley outside of Haworth itself and is always held on the first weekend in September, starting on the preceding Thursday and running until the Sunday night.

The Haworth Band is one of the oldest secular musical organisations in the Keighley area and its band room is located in the heart of the Haworth Village.^[8] History records indicate that there was a brass band at Ponden, close by as far back as 1854 with a body of excellent performers. It was founded by John Heaton who lived at Ponden. The band had the job of playing at a celebration in Haworth at the conclusion of the Crimean War. Over the years the world of brass band music went from strength to strength, during which time the Haworth Band went with it. As it stands today the Haworth Band is a busy and thriving organisation that is closely linked to the local community.^{[citation needed]}

Every year the village hosts a 1940s weekend where locals and visitors don wartime attire for a host of nostalgic events.^{[citation needed]}

Community facilities[link]

On 13 January 2009, it was announced that a permanent library will be established in the village, replacing the mobile service which visits the village once a week. Haworth last had its own library in 1978.^[9]

Landmarks[link]

Haworth railway station

Haworth railway station is part of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, an authentic preserved steam railway.

The 43 miles (69 km) long Brontë Way leads past Lower Laithe Reservoir, Stanbury to the Brontë waterfalls, the Brontë Bridge and the Brontë Stone Chair in which (it is said) the sisters took turns to sit and write their first stories. It then leads out of the valley and up on the moors to Ponden Hall (reputedly Thrushcross Grange in Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights) and Top Withens, a desolate ruin which was reputedly the setting for the farmstead Wuthering Heights. Top Withens can also be reached by a shorter walking route departing from the nearby village of Stanbury.

Haworth is served by Keighley & District rural bus service which provides links to the main local town of Keighley and the local villages of Oxenhope, Stanbury, Oakworth and Denholme. Evening and Sunday services are partly paid for by Metro.

Education[link]

Haworth primary school on Rawdon Road is the only school in the village and takes children from age 3 to 11.^[10] Children from 11 to 18 attend secondary schools outside the village at Oakbank school in Keighley and Parkside School in Cullingworth.^[11]

Religious sites[link]

St. Michael and All Angels church is situated on Church Street, next to the Brontë parsonage. It is part of the Church of England Deanery of Craven.^[12]

Baptists in the area originally met in a barn at the bottom of Brow Road, first used in 1785. They subsequently moved to Hall Green Baptist Church at the junction of Bridgehouse Lane and Sun Street.^[13]

Haworth Cricket club was established in 1887 as Haworth Wesleyan Cricket Club and are members of the English Cricket Board.^[14] They have a permanent ground north of Well Lane, west of the village centre. Haworth West End Cricket Club was formed in 1900 as the Haworth West Lane Baptist Cricket Club.^[15]

Brontë sisters[link]

The Brontë sisters were born in Thornton near Bradford, but wrote most of their novels while living at the Haworth Parsonage (which is now a museum owned and maintained by the Brontë Society), when their father was the parson at the adjacent Church of St. Michael and All Angels. In the 19th century, the town and surrounding settlements were largely industrialized, which put it at odds with the popular portrayal in Wuthering Heights, which only bore resemblance to the upper moorland that Emily Brontë was accustomed to.^[16]

Haworth and Haworth railway station have been used as settings for numerous period films and TV series, including The Railway Children (starring Jenny Agutter), Yanks (starring Richard Gere and Vanessa Redgrave), and Alan Parker's film version of Pink Floyd's The Wall (starring Bob Geldof). It also featured in "Wild Child" (starring Emma Roberts), and "The Souk" (a high class vintage shop) was depicted as a charity shop.

Jann Haworth (born 1942) is an American Pop artist. A pioneer of soft sculpture, she is best known as the co-creator of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover.

Life & Work[link]

Early years[link]

Haworth was born in 1942 and raised in Hollywood, California. Her mother Miriam Haworth was a distinguished ceramist, printmaker, and painter. Her father, Ted Haworth, was an Academy Award-winning art director. Haworth acknowledges that much of her own work has been shaped by the early influences of her artistic parents.

My mother taught me how to sew. I was eight when I made my first petticoat, and from that point on I made dolls, their clothing and almost everything I wore. My father was a Hollywood production designer. I shadowed him on the sets. This influenced my work in the 1960s. I thought of the installations that I did as film sets. The concept of the stand-in, the fake, the dummy, the latex model as surrogates for the real, came from being with my father. —Jann Haworth^[1]

The 1960s[link]

After two years at UCLA, she moved to London, England in 1961. There she studied art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art and studio art at the Slade School of Fine Art. Haworth reveled in being a rebellious woman artist within a conservative, male-dominated institution like the Slade.

I liked the Slade’s fustiness; it was another thing to push against...The assumption was that, as one tutor put it, “the girls were there to keep the boys happy”. He prefaced that by saying “it wasn’t necessary for them to look at the portfolios of the female students…they just needed to look at their photos”. From that point, it was head-on competition with the male students. I was annoyed enough, and American enough, to take that on. I was determined to better them, and that’s one of the reasons for the partly sarcastic choice of cloth, latex and sequins as media. It was a female language to which the male students didn’t have access. —Jann Haworth^[1]

It was in these formative years at art school that her aesthetic sense was first established. She began experimenting with sewn and stuffed soft sculptures. She made still life items (flowers, doughnuts) and quickly progressed to her now iconic "Old Lady" doll and other life-sized figures.^[2] Her work often contained specific references to American culture and to Hollywood in particular, as is readily apparent in her dummies of Mae West, Shirley Temple and W.C. Fields.^[3]

Haworth soon became a leading figure of the British Pop Art movement, and joined Pauline Boty as one of its only female practitioners in London. Her first major exhibition was at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in 1963, where she was selected to participate in 4 Young Artists (18 September - 19 October 1963) alongside British artists John Howlin, Brian Mills, and John Pearson.^[4] Three shows at the Robert Fraser Gallery in London followed, two of which were solo exhibitions. Her work was seen in Amsterdam and Milan and also was featured in the Hayward Gallery's landmark exhibition of Pop Art in 1968. That same year, she and her then-husband, Pop artist Peter Blake, won a Grammy for their album cover design of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band[link]

Gallery owner Robert Fraser suggested to The Beatles that they commission Blake and Haworth to design the cover for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The original concept was to have The Beatles dressed in their new "Northern brass band" uniforms appearing at an official ceremony in a park. For the great crowd gathered at this imaginary event, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison, as well as Haworth, Blake, and Fraser all submitted a list of characters they wanted to see in attendance. Blake and Haworth then pasted life-size, black-and-white photographs of all the approved characters onto hardboard, which Haworth subsequently hand-tinted. Haworth also added several cloth dummies to the assembly, including one of her "Old Lady" figures and a Shirley Temple doll who wears a "Welcome The Rolling Stones" sweater. Inspired by the municipal flower-clock in Hammersmith, West London, Haworth came up with the idea of writing out the name of the band in civic flower-bed lettering as well.^[5]

The 1970s to Today[link]

In the 1970s she and Blake were members of the Brotherhood of Ruralists, a group of artists that also included Ann and Graham Arnold, Annie and Graham Ovenden, and David Inshaw.^[6] In 1979 she founded and ran The Looking Glass School near Bath, Somerset, an arts-and-crafts primary and middle school. The same year she separated from Blake and commenced living with her present husband, the writer Richard Severy. During the subsequent two decades her artistic career took second place to her commitment to raising a young family (2 daughters, 3 stepdaughters, and a son). Still, she found time to illustrate (as Karen Haworth) six of Severy's books: Mystery Pig (1983), Unicorn Trap (1984), Rat's Castle (1985), High Jinks (1986), Burners and Breakers (1987), and Sea Change (1987). She also created five covers for the 1981 Methuen Arden Shakespeare editions of Richard III, Macbeth, Twelfth Night, Henry the Fifth, and Coriolanus. Haworth also authored three "How-to" art books for children: Paint (1993), Collage (1994), and Painting and Sticking (with Miriam Haworth, 1995).

After mounting two solo exhibitions at Gimpel fils, London in the mid-1990s, Haworth won a fellowship in 1997 to study American quilt-making. She returned to the United States and took up residence in Sundance, Utah, where she founded the Art Shack Studios and Glass Recycling Works, and co-founded the Sundance Mountain Charter School (now the Soldier Hollow Charter School). Since then, her career has been revitalized by solo exhibitions at the Mayor Gallery, London (2006), Wolverhampton Art Gallery (2007), and Galerie du Centre, Paris (2008). She also has been represented in numerous, important Pop art retrospectives, including "Pop Art UK" (Modena, 2004), "Pop Art and the 60s: This Was Tomorrow" (London, 2004), "Pop Art! 1956-1968" (Rome, 2007), and "Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958-1968" (Philadelphia, 2009).

SLC PEPPER[link]

In 2004 Haworth began work on SLC PEPPER, a 50 ft. x 30 ft. civic wall mural in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, representing an updated version of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover. As Haworth stated, "The original album cover, famous though it is, is an icon ready for the iconoclast. We will be turning the original inside out... ethnic and gender balancing, and evaluating for contemporary relevance."^[7] Together with over 30 local, national, and international artists of all ages, Haworth created a new set of "heroes and heroines of the 21st century" in stencil graffiti, replacing each of the personalities depicted in the original. Only the Beatles' jackets remain as metal cut-outs with head and hand holes so that visitors may "become part of the piece" by taking souvenir photos.^[8] The first phase of the mural's construction was completed in 2005. SLC PEPPER remains an ongoing arts project, where local artists will continue to add to its design.

Herschel Haworth, Jr. (May 16, 1922 – February 26, 2008), better known as Speedy Haworth, was an American guitarist and singer who was involved with the golden age of country music broadcasting in the Ozarks. He was a featured cast member of ABC-TV's Ozark Jubilee from 1955–1960 and is a member of the Missouri Country Music Hall of Fame.

Biography[link]

Early years[link]

Haworth was born on May 15, 1922 in Springfield, Missouri at home. His father, Herschel Haworth, was a carpenter of English ancestry. His mother was Vancie Martha Haworth (née Wilson), whose family came to Missouri in a covered wagon from the hills of Tennessee and settled in Nixa, Missouri. She had five sisters: Cassie, Carrie, Edna, Bertha and Myrtle; and one brother, Clyde "Slim" Wilson. The family was musical on his mother's side, therefore Haworth learned to play guitar. His mother and her sisters and brothers often sang together at church functions, and there are some folk music recordings of them in the Library of Congress. Haworth won a yodeling contest when he was 10, and was notable by the age of 21.

Radio career[link]

Haworth started appearing on the radio with George Earl—Earl read the newspaper comics on the air and Haworth sang. His mother, known on-air as "Aunt Martha," and her brother Slim formed The Goodwill Trio with Haworth as "Junior." They first appeared on KGBX-AM in Springfield in 1932, but moved to co-owned KWTO-AM, the more powerful station, soon after it signed on in 1933. The group made its first public appearance in 1936 at the county courthouse in Galena at a fundraiser.

The trio later became The Goodwill Family when Guy Smith joined them as "Uncle George."^[1] The station, heard across the Ozarks, was a stepping-stone during Haworth's years for such musicians as Porter Wagoner, Les Paul, Chet Atkins and The Browns. The Goodwill Family recorded 250 transcriptions for airing on KWTO when they toured.

Television career[link]

Haworth was one of several KWTO performers who made the transition to television when Springfield's KYTV produced Ozark Jubilee beginning in December 1953. The program moved to ABC-TV in 1955 and introduced Haworth to a national television audience, where he played lead guitar and remained for the program's nearly six-year run. He also appeared on NBC-TV's Five Star Jubilee in 1961.

Beginning in 1964, he appeared on The Slim Wilson Show on KYTV as a member of the Tall Timber Trio with Wilson and Bob White.

Chart successes[link]

Haworth, on electric guitar, was part of the original Porter Wagoner Trio with Don Warden (steel guitar). The group began touring, and 1954 brought Wagoner his first top 10 hit with "Company’s Comin’". "A Satisfied Mind" came next, went to No. 1 for four weeks and stayed on the charts for more than eight months. In 1955, Wagoner also became a part of Ozark Jubilee, but on February 23, 1957 he moved to Nashville, Tennessee and joined the Grand Ole Opry. Haworth performed in Nashville with Wagoner, Rex Allen, and Leroy Van Dyke, but preferred living in Springfield. Haworth was later inducted into the Missouri Country Music Hall of Fame with Wagoner.

Later years and death[link]

Later in his career, Haworth sang more gospel music and performed in smaller venues around the Ozarks and Nashville. He fell in Bolivar while going to play his guitar at a dance. He broke his hip and required several weeks of rehabilitation after surgery. He suffered from Parkinson's disease and was in hospice care for several weeks before his death on February 26, 2008. Haworth was buried in Springfield's Eastlawn Cemetery.

Legacy[link]

Haworth is survived by his widow, Wanna Haworth; daughter Shirley Haworth, a singer; two sons, David Haworth and Stephen Haworth, who resides in Branson, Missouri with his wife Pam, among many other family members who carry on his legacy in gospel and country music, including his youngest niece, Stormie Haworth, who is an up-and-coming country music singer/songwriter and guitarist. Daughter and fellow singer Shirley remembered a humble man who was happiest sharing the music his audiences loved. "When he played, it was like angels fingers on the strings," she said.

Haworth Court is among several streets in a residential neighborhood northeast of downtown Nixa, Missouri named for performers on Ozark Jubilee, including Red Foley Court, Zed Tennis Street, Slim Wilson Boulevard and Ozark Jubilee Drive.

Valerie Jill Haworth^[1] (pronounced Hah-worth; 15 August 1945 – 3 January 2011)^[2] was an English actress. She appeared in films throughout the 1960s, and started making guest appearances on television in 1963. She also originated the role of Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret on Broadway in 1966.

Early life[link]

Haworth was born in Hove, Sussex, to a textile magnate father and a mother who trained as a ballet dancer.^[2] She was named Valerie Jill in honor of the day she was born, Victory over Japan Day or V.J. Day.^[3] She took ballet lessons at the prestigious Sadler's Wells Ballet School to escape from an unhappy home when her parents separated in 1953.^[4][3] Later she attended the Corona Stage School.^[3]

Acting career[link]

Her first film appearance was in the 1959 rendition of The 39 Steps, directed by Ralph Thomas, when she had a non-speaking part as a schoolgirl. Next she played another schoolgirl in The Brides of Dracula (1960), directed by Terence Fisher.^[5]

Otto Preminger was looking for a new fresh face for the role of Karen, an ill-fated Jewish-Danish refugee girl in love with Dov Landau (Sal Mineo), in his film Exodus (1960). He traveled to England and Germany, with his soon-to-be-wife Hope, looking for a girl for the role. After looking at hundreds of girls, Preminger spotted a photo of Haworth in a modeling magazine for Corona theater school.^[6] Haworth only went to the auditions, three of them, which included Christine Kaufmann and three other young actresses, to get out of school. She was only fifteen years old when she appeared as Karen in her first acting role in a feature film.^[4] Haworth appeared on Parade for the July 31, 1960 issue.^[7] Then she and Mineo appeared on the front cover of the December 12, 1960 issue of LIFE, part of a photo essay by Gjon Mili.^[8]

Under contract to Preminger (for five years), she also worked with him in The Cardinal (1963; as Lalage Menton), and in the 1965 film In Harm's Way as Ensign Annalee Dorne, who while engaged to Ens. Jeremiah 'Jere' Torrey (Brandon deWilde) commits suicide after being raped by Commander Paul Eddington, Jr. (Kirk Douglas). Haworth liked working with De Wilde, Patricia Neal, and Douglas, but called John Wayne "the meanest, nastiest man with the worst attitude I ever worked with."^[9]

Preminger insisted that she live in New York City to become "Americanized," but he didn't want her to live in Los Angeles for fear she would just be a 'starlet a-go-go'.^[10] She was approached to be the title character in the 1962 film Lolita opposite James Mason, but because Preminger held her contract he vetoed the idea.^[9] Mineo and Haworth were also considered for the film David and Lisa (1962), but once again Preminger said 'no.'^[11] Preminger did let her make three French films; Les Mystères de Paris (as Fleur de Marie; 1962), Because, Because of a Woman (as Cécilia; 1963), and Ton ombre est la mienne (as Sylvie 'Devi' Bergerat; 1963).^[9] Haworth went to visit Mineo in Utah in November 1962 and had a non-speaking role as an extra in the film The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965).^[11]

She made four appearances on the TV program 12 O'Clock High. In the first season, fourth episode ("The Sound of Distant Thunder" - 1964), she played an English girl, Mary, who falls in love with Lieutenant Andy Lathrop (played by Peter Fonda). The following season, she played a deaf girl, Nora Burgess, in an episode entitled "To Heinie with Love" (1965). She then played Lieutenant Fay Vendry in two episodes, "Runway in the Dark" (1965) and "The Hotshot" (1965).

In 1965 she did an episode of The Rogues entitled "Mr. White's Christmas" as Timothea, and really loved working with David Niven and Charles Boyer.^[12] She appeared in one of the final episodes, "Duel at Daybreak," of the series Rawhide as Vicki Woodruff, where Haworth just "adored" Charles Bronson, but Clint Eastwood snubbed her and didn't say two words to her off camera. Haworth first hurt her back in an accident on the set when she jumped from a runaway buggy and team of horses. She then caught pneumonia and was bedridden for two months after she had to stand waist-deep in a man-made pond for six hours doing re-takes.^[12]

She starred in the horror films It! (1966), Horror House (1969), Tower of Evil (1972), and Home for the Holidays (TV; 1972). She only did It! for the money, hated her hair in the film, and hated the film altogether. Haworth liked working with Roddy McDowell, who brought her the poster for the film (on her opening night of Cabaret), and wrote "S-h" in front of the title.^[12]

While filming It! she met Hal Prince who was doing research for a musical based on Goodbye to Berlin by Charles Isherwood. Prince asked her if she could sing and she responded "Louder than Merman."^[12] She played Sally Bowles in the original Broadway cast of the 1966 musical Cabaret, a part she played for two years and four months.^[13] Judi Dench took over the role when the production debuted in London in 1968.^[14]

Haworth's other notable theatre roles included the plays Bedroom Farce and Butterflies Are Free.^[15]

Haworth turned down working on Hawaii Five-O because of the bad reputation of the show's star, Jack Lord.^[12]

Personal life[link]

While making Exodus, Haworth became first friends, and then lovers, with Sal Mineo, and they were friends until his death in 1976.^[16] She lost her virginity to Mineo at the age of fifteen in her hotel suite at the Gotham Hotel in Manhattan.^[17] Their relationship as a couple ended on Valentine's Day 1964 when Haworth found Mineo and his protégé, Bobby Sherman, having sex in the bed that Haworth and Mineo shared in a Malibu beach house.^[18] She was devastated and didn't talk to Mineo for a time, but they eventually became friends again, made public appearances together, and in 1971 she invested in his attempted production of The Wrong People (a book about a homosexual relationship with a young boy).^[19] Their friendship even led to a brief resumption of a sexual relationship in 1969, but after she got pregnant in September and had an abortion, they went back to being just friends.^[20] Haworth later told author Michael Michaud that she thought Courtney Burr III, who later had a long-term relationship with Mineo, was the 'love of Mineo's life.'^[21]

Haworth dated television producer Aaron Spelling in the summer of 1965, when he was 41 and she was 19 going on 20.^[22] Spelling told friends that he hoped that Haworth would be the next Mrs. Spelling, but Haworth's mother, Nancy, 'scoffed' at the idea and told the press that she was dating lots of guys and was in love with a different one every week.^[23] Even though Haworth and Mineo were not a couple, they were still friends and he was very protective of her. He found Haworth and Spelling together at a Beverly Hills private nightclub called Daisy, and walked up and punched Spelling in the face, yelling, "Do you know how old she is? What are you doing with her at your age?"^[24]

She went on the daytime talk show Girl Talk, hosted by Virginia Graham, to talk about the accident that she had had on the set of Rawhide, and they had also booked Mineo on the show as well. The host asked her why she and Mineo had broken up and she just blurted out, "Well, he left me for another man." Nobody seemed to catch it.^[24]

Later life, death[link]

Haworth lived in New York City, on the Upper East Side, for many years with her mother.^[15] She died of natural causes at the age of 65 on 3 January 2011 in Manhattan, and is buried at Kensico Cemetery.^[2]
