Tobias Mayer - German astronomer, University Göttingen (Germany), March 6th, 2012
Tobias Mayer (1723-1762) was a German astronomer and mathematician famous for his studies of the moon. In 1754 he became director of the first observatory in Göttingen (Turmstrasse 7), where he worked until his death in 1762. - This video shows a lecture (excerpt) about him, taking place at the university of Göttingen (Germany) on March 6th, 2012. From today's point of view our knowledge of the cosmos isn't more than 5%. In other words, there's still a lot to discover ...

Göttingen soil warming experiment: Installation
The Göttingen miniplot soil warming experiment Das Göttinger Bodenerwärmungs-Experiment Climate impact and adaptation research in Lower Saxony www.kliff-niedersachsen.de Location of the miniplot soil warming experiment before installation 3 warming treatments are repeated four times = 12 plots Warming treatments include 1) control (not heated) 2) control + 2°C soil temperature 3) control + 4°C soil temperature Heating cables buried in the top soil layer. Each plot is equipped with soil temperature and soil moisture sensors. All cables are collected next to each plot and distributed to the container which holds the temperature control and data storage system. A weather station measures above ground meteorological parameters. After sowing, stubbles infected with different fungi pathogenic to oilseed rape (Verticillium longisporum and Leptosphaeria maculans) were distributed across the plots. - Snow cover status at 7. January 2011 - Flowering stage of oilseed rape at 11. European Identity Issues: Thoughts on Transcultural Citizenship (1/6)
Dr Lars Klein, Senior Lecturer at the Erasmus Mundus Master Programme "Euroculture -- Europe in the Wider World" 1st October 2012 Co-hosted by Monash and RMIT European and EU Centres What does it mean to be European? Is there such a thing as a distinct European identity? These questions have perplexed academics and politicians alike, particularly in the context of political legitimacy for European Union institutions. Answers have proven difficult to find. So why not leave it open? Dr Lars Klein will argue for the possibility of a transcultural citizenship that supports hybridity and at the same time fosters a feeling of Europeanness. Dr Lars Klein has been with the Euroculture Programme at the University of Göttingen since 2008. He studied North American Studies and Philosophy at the Freie Universität Berlin and the University of Basel. He holds a PhD in Modern and Contemporary History from the Georg-August-University Göttingen. Previously he worked on a project funded by the German Foundation for Peace Research and has been visiting scholar at Georgetown University, Indiana University and the University of Pune. His main research interests are European identity, transatlantic relations, war and war reporting in the 20th century.

New Super-Earth Around The star HD 40307
New Super-Earth in Six-Planet System May Be Just Right to Support Life Source: University of Hertfordshire Posted Wednesday, November 7, 2012 A new super-Earth planet that may have an Earth-like climate and be just right to support life has been discovered around a nearby star HD 40307 by an international team of astronomers, led by Mikko Tuomi, University of Hertfordshire, and Guillem Anglada-Escude, University of Goettingen. This shows a fly-through video of the HD 40307 system. The video is physically realistic though the rings and atmospheres are speculative and are not detected or constrained by this work.
