Cumbric was a variety of the British language, in the Celtic language group, spoken during the Early Middle Ages in the Hen Ogledd or "Old North", or what is now northern England and southern Lowland Scotland, the area anciently known as Cumbria. It was closely related to Old Welsh and the other Brythonic languages. Place name evidence suggests Cumbric speakers may have carried it into other parts of Northern England as migrants from its core area further north. It may also have been spoken as far south as the Yorkshire Dales. Most linguists believe that it became extinct in the 12th century, after the incorporation of the semi-independent Kingdom of Strathclyde into the Kingdom of Scotland.

It is debated whether Cumbric should be considered a separate language or a dialect of Welsh. The contiguous land connection between the Brythonic speaking areas of the Old North and those of Wales was severed in the 7th century, although some maritime links between the areas would have remained. In the 10th century the Brythonic speaking Kingdom of Strathclyde appears to have maintained hegemony over Cumberland – though possibly not Copeland – and the Eden Valley down to Stainmore. The original boundaries of the Diocese of Carlisle are said traditionally to mark the extent of the rule of Strathclyde. Cumbric placenames are also common in Lothian,Peebleshire, Dumfriesshire, Lanarkshire and Ayrshire. They exist in Galloway but are overlain and influenced by the spread of Gaelic there.

Richard Gendall is a British expert on the Cornish language, born in 1924. He is the founder of "Modern Cornish"/Curnoack Nowedga, which split off during the 1980s. Whereas Ken George mainly went to Medieval Cornish as the inspiration for his revival, Gendall went to the last surviving records of Cornish, such as John and Nicholas Boson, in the eighteenth-century. He is involved with University of Exeter

He is a folk musician, and has made several recordings with Brenda Wootton, as well as a poet in writer in Cornish itself under the bardic name of "Gelvinak".

Gendall founded Teere ha Tavaz, an organisation which seeks to promote the Cornish language in its Modern Cornish or Curnoack Nowedga variety. It is also a small publisher on, and in, the Cornish language.

Dic Jones (1934 – 18 August 2009), was a Welsh language poet and the Archdruid of the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

He was born Richard Lewis Jones at Tre'r-ddôl in Ceredigion. The son of a farmer, Jones himself farmed on 85 acres (34 ha) at Fferm yr Hendre at Blaenannerch in Aberporth. In commenting upon his life he quipped

Jones began his literary career as a competitor in the Urdd eisteddfod, where, as an exponent of cynghanedd, he won the chair five times in his twenties. In 1966 he won the Chair at the National Eisteddfod with an awdl entitled "Cynhaeaf" (English: Harvest).

In 1968, cameras from HTV filmed one of the first pieces of British reality television, when they followed Jones, his wife Jean, and three of their children, Delyth, Rhian and Dafydd, on a fortnight’s holiday to San Antonio, Ibiza.

Under his bardic name "Dic yr Hendre", Jones was installed as Archdruid in 2007, succeeding Selwyn Iolen. He officiated at the 2008 event in Cardiff, but missed the 2009 event in Bala due to ill health.
