'A19 Beach' is a set of paired dark photographs that capture a series of journeys across the UK at night and visits to a beach with black sand in Northumberland, The images highlight patterns in manmade and natural intervention and contains personal references; despite this they appear implacable and could be any journey, any beach or anyone's memories. One set of photographs are taken on my journeys around the country at night and focus on capturing light, colour and movement in the dark using a slow shutter speed and a pinhole camera lense. The work is often taken from bridges, inside the car and from the side of the road which requires planning, quick execution and often some nerve! The other set of photographs are taken on a beach in Northumberland called Newbiggin, this beach has a unique feature that it is constantly covered in a layer of fine black coal which is washed up from all the mining in the area. Newbiggin also has a number of personal meanings to me, it is where my Grandma would go on holiday when the area was in its heyday and I worked for a year here managing an off shore Sculpture while the beach and surrounding promenade were transformed from run down resort to a once again picturesque seaside village.
