With Marlins Snagging Jose Reyes, The focus Shifts To Hanley Ramirez
The Marlins wanted a deal with shortstop Jose Reyes BEFORE the start of baseball's winter meetings and apparently they got it. Now comes the sticky subject of what to do with Miami's incumbent shortstop, Hanley Ramirez. No sooner does my plane touch down in Dallas does the blogosphere explode with news of a six-year, $105 million deal with Reyes — first reported by ESPN Deportes and confirmed by Ken Rosenthal at FOX Sports before others chimed in. I shared the developments on my iPhone with former manager Felipe Alou, who was on my flight to Dallas from West Palm Beach. Felipe works for the Giants now but he knows both Ramirez and Reyes. In fact, Felip once had the same dilemma that the Marlins now have — both Reyes and Ramirez on the same team! Felip managed both Reyes and Ramirez on the Dominican Republic team in the World Baseball Classic in 2009. "That was a headache for me,'' he said, "but the two guys were so good about it.'' Alou wound up starting Reyes two games at shortstop and Ramirez one game (while being the designated hitter in the other two). "We got eliminated after three games,'' Alou said with a laugh. "I kept both guys in the lineup. They were both pretty hitters.'' Alou's advice to the Marlins? "I'd ask (Ramirez) to play third or center field. I think he's such a good athlete, he could play anywhere,'' he said. But now it's up to Hanley to take the high road and accept the move to third base. Last time we checked in with Hanley, he was not thrilled ...

Montreal Expo Moises Alou
Moises Rojas Alou, son of Felipe and cousin of Mel Rojas. Broke into the big leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates and was then part of a trade with teammates Willie Greene and Scott Ruskin that sent 'em all to Montreal. In return, the Expos gave starting pitcher Zane Smith. Believe it or not, Moises (a 1st round pick, second overall) was the "player to be named later" in this trade. The rest is history. In the early 90s, Moises Alou, Marquis Grissom and Larry Walker became the best Expos outfield we had seen since the Cromartie-Dawson-Valentine era. The Alous, father and son, have made a tremendous impact on the team that is still part of the talk anytime the Expos are discussed. Their remarkable contribution helped put the 90s Expos on the map. So here he is ladies and gents: Le voltigeur de gauche, the left fielder, le numéro 18, number 18, MOISES ALOU! Please note that I don't own the copyrights of any of these pics and song. Enjoy. FULL NAME: MOISES ROJAS ALOU NICKNAME: ? Ty Cobb shoves base runner George Burns
August 19th, 1917 While coaching at third base for Detroit in a 1-1 tie against The Senators, Ty Cobb shoves base runner George Burns as he pulled up at third on a long hit. Burns headed home scoring the winning run. Senators Manager and future Hall of Famer Clark Griffith protested and American League President Ban Johnson upheld the protest, as the rule bans coaches from touching a runner. The game is replayed and Washington wins 2-0. On August 19th, 1921 Ty Cobb becomes the youngest player to collect 3000 hits singling off Red Sox hurler Elmer Myers at the age of 34. August 19th, 1982 - Scheduled to pitch against the Expos at home, Braves rookie Pascual Perez misses his scheduled start when he can't find his way to the ballpark. Perez circled the stadium on the interstate several times but was lost. He will be given a Braves jacket with the new number I-85 on it. Phil Niekro steps in and wins, 5-4, running his record to 11and 3. August 19th, 1987, Paul Molitor leads the Brewers, collecting four hits in a 13--4 drubbing of Cleveland. Molitor extends his hitting streak to 34 games tying Dom DiMaggio for 11th on the all-time list. August 19th, 1998 Starting Pitcher Dustin Hermanson of the Montreal Expos allows three hits in seven innings in an 8--2 victory. This was Felipe Alou's 521st career win as manager of the Montreal Expos, most in franchise history. Hermanson was clearly Alou's good luck charm as he was also the starting and winning pitcher in Alou's 400th, 450th ...
