Taste: 5 Future Technology Innovations from IBM
In 5 years, a computer system will know what you like to eat better than you do. A machine that experiences flavor will determine the precise chemical structure of food and why people like it. Not only will it get you to eat healthier, but it will also surprise us with unusual pairings of foods that are designed to maximize our experience of taste and flavor. Digital taste buds will help you to eat smarter. Every year IBM makes predictions about 5 technology innovations that stand to change the way we live within the next 5 years. Smell: 5 Future Technology Innovations from IBM
In 5 years, computers will have a sense of smell. We will see vast advances where sensors will be equipped to smell potential diseases that feed back into a cognitive system to tell us if they suspect a possible health issue. Your phone will detect if you're coming down with a cold or illness before you do. euronews innovation - Bags of water
www.euronews.com A waterbag is a flexible container system for freshwater transport. Engineer Samuele Ambrosetti explained: "You can see here a water bag made from supple PVC, which is used for transporting fresh water by sea. It's used to supply fresh drinking water to islands and coastal communities without a regular supply of fresh water - in summer for instance." The Refresh project consortium chose to test their water bag prototype in Crete. The technology is not new, but the team have developed a new approach. The General Manager of Ziplast, Gianfranco Germani, said: "For this project we had to develop a new zip that is strong enough to resist the lateral pressure, that is water-proof, and that can resist the hydraulic pressure that can build up in the water bag." The zip is one of the key elements of this new generation water bag. The container is made up of several modules which means its capacity can be adjusted according to demand. The different sections are also designed to form a compact shape while under tow. "This is a medium-sized prototype," Ambrosetti went on. "It can contain 200 cubic metres of water, which is already considerable. But we think that on a commercial scale our water bag could contain ten times that - in other words, 2000 cubic metres." This type of water storage and transport is also cheap to run. The waterbag is peppered with sensors to warn of any deformation of the container while underway at sea. The tests conducted in Crete have borne ...

101 East - China: Inventing Innovation
China is cultivating a new wave of visionaries in a bid to revive its slowing economic growth. But it also faces allegations of unfair trade practices and intellectual piracy by some of its major trading partners in the US and Europe. 101 East takes a closer look at the issue.

Sight: 5 Future Technology Innovations from IBM
In 5 years, computers will not only be able to look at images, but understand them. Computers will be trained to turn pictures and videos into features, identifying things like color distribution, texture patterns, edge information and motion information. A pixel will be worth a thousand words. Every year IBM makes predictions about 5 technology innovations that stand to change the way we live within the next 5 years. Touch: 5 Future Technology Innovations from IBM
In 5 years, you will be able to touch through your phone. IBM is working on bringing a sense of touch to mobile devices, and bringing together virtual and real world experiences for a number of industries including retail. Shoppers will be able to "feel" the texture and weave of a fabric or product by brushing their finger over the item's image on a device's screen. Chris Anderson: How YouTube is driving innovation
(This version of Chris's talk has corrected picture of film-maker Jonathan Chu at 1:38.) www.ted.com TED's Chris Anderson says the rise of web video is driving a worldwide phenomenon he calls Crowd Accelerated Innovation -- a self-fueling cycle of learning that could be as significant as the invention of print. But to tap into its power, organizations will need to embrace radical openness. And for TED, it means the dawn of a whole new chapter ... How come TED's head guy Chris Anderson is giving his own TEDTalk? Well, it all started with an idea that wouldn't go away -- an insight into the true significance of web video, and what it might mean for the world's future. Bruno Giussani, who runs our TEDGlobal conference, got excited enough about the idea that he insisted Chris speak at Oxford this summer. The talk ushers in a whole new chapter in TED's history ... one which you're invited to help write. Please watch, and then help shape the future of TED with your comments.TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http Watch a highlight reel of the Top 10 TEDTalks at www.ted.com

euronews innovation - A machine which can read your mind
www.euronews.com "We have developed so called brain-computer interfaces which allow the user to control different devices and programmes without hands, by means of the user's thoughts." That is how Christoph Hintermüller of the Project Management and Research team at g.tec Guger Technologies sums up a machine which can quite literally read the mind. It is intended for disabled patients, and the system made up of electrodes which sit on the scalp translates user intentions into electronic commands. "A brain-computer interface captures various electrical impulses from the head of the user, and decodes them into specific tasks and actions," continued Christoph Hintermüller. That allows the user to play an online computer game, hands-free. The user selects the commands by simply looking at the blinking arrows on the screen. The frequency of the flashing is reproduced in the brain cortex and read by the electrodes. "As soon as we have understood the electroencephalography patterns produced by the groups of neurons in the brain, we can map the brain activity to any commands for any device, like a television or a motorised system for the home," said Arnau Espinosa Manzanal of the Research and Development department, g.tec Guger Technologies Developed within a European research project, this technology makes home electronics more accessible. A user can navigate through various on-screen menus by simply focusing attention on the commands. This way even severely disabled people can ...

WATCH THE LATEST VIDEO THAT CAME OUT TODAY HERE www.youtube.com www.jetstreamnews.com www.jetnews.us http If You Use Twitter heres the Twitter address or just click the twitter link on the right of the channel page twitter.com www.youtube.com Date: 03-01-12 Host: George Noory Guests: Neil deGrasse Tyson, Catherine Austin Fitts Astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium, Neil deGrasse Tyson, discussed how we can get back on track to become a space-faring society once again, and what we stand to lose if NASA doesn't regain its ground as a force for innovation. The current situation with NASA dependent on the Russians to bring its astronauts to the Space Station saddles the US with an "opportunity cost," he commented, explaining that if we don't have an ambitious near-term plan to advance the space frontier, then the concept becomes lost from society. The space program in the 1960s was part of a forward-looking culture, and innovation permeated society during this decade, he noted. But, when it became apparent that the Russians weren't planning to go to the moon, the US lost interest in further moon missions, because their militaristic motivation was no longer in effect, he explained. Now the motivation for space missions and explorations could be a kind of economic investment, with a potential huge return from new technologies and industries, Tyson said. For instance, the moon could be harvested for Helium 3, useful in nuclear fusion reactors. He suggested that ...
