The Pittsburgh Courier was an African-American newspaper published in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1907 until October 22, 1966. By the 1930s, the Courier was one of the top black newspapers in the United States.
The New Pittsburgh Courier is a weekly newspaper catering to African Americans, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It is owned by Real Times.
The newspaper is named after the original Pittsburgh Courier (1907-65), which in the 1930s and 1940s was one of the largest and most influential African-American newspapers in the country, with a nationwide circulation of more than 350,000.
After circulation declines in the 1950s and 1960s, the original Courier was purchased by John H. Sengstacke, publisher of The Chicago Daily Defender, in 1966. He reorganized the paper under a new name — the New Pittsburgh Courier — to avoid paying several outstanding tax bills and invoices. He later commented:
The New Pittsburgh Courier joined Sengstacke's other newspapers in a chain of prominent African-American publications, including the Defender. In 1974 Sengstacke appointed Hazel B. Garland as the new editor-in-chief of the New Pittsburgh Courier, making her the first African-American woman in history to edit a national newspaper. When asked about his decision, Sengstacke replied: "I have supreme confidence in Hazel, and believe that she will continue to do a great job as editor-in-chief as she did as city editor. She has proven herself over the many years of dedication to the Courier and the Negro cause. She will be a guiding force in leading this paper to bigger and better things in the future." Two years later, the paper won the John B. Russwurm Award for the best national African-American newspaper.
Pittsburgh (/ˈpɪtsbərɡ/ PITS-burg) is the second largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with a population of 305,842 and the county seat of Allegheny County. The Combined Statistical Area (CSA) population of 2,659,937 is the largest in both the Ohio Valley and Appalachia and the 20th-largest in the U.S. Pittsburgh is known as both "the Steel City" for its more than 300 steel-related businesses, as well as "the City of Bridges" for its 446 bridges. The city features 30 skyscrapers, 2 inclines, a pre-revolutionary fortification and the source of the Ohio River at the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers. This vital link of the Atlantic coast and Midwest through the mineral-rich Alleghenies made the area coveted by the French and British Empires, Virginia, Whiskey Rebels, Civil War raiders and media networks.
Aside from steel, Pittsburgh has led in aluminum, glass, shipbuilding, petroleum, foods, sports, transportation, computing, autos, and electronics. For much of the 20th century, Pittsburgh was behind only New York and Chicago in corporate headquarters employment, second to New York in bank assets and with the most U.S. stockholders per capita. America's 1980s deindustrialization laid off area blue-collar workers and thousands of downtown white-collar workers when the longtime Pittsburgh-based world headquarters of Gulf Oil, Sunbeam, Rockwell and Westinghouse moved. This heritage left the area with renowned museums, medical centers, parks, research centers, libraries, a diverse cultural district and the most bars per capita in the U.S. In 2015, Pittsburgh was named on a list of the "eleven most livable cities in the world."

A courier is a person who delivers messages, packages, and mail.
Couriers are distinguished from ordinary mail services by features such as speed, security, tracking, signature, specialization and individualization of express services, and swift delivery times, which are optional for most everyday mail services. As a premium service, couriers are usually more expensive than standard mail services, and their use is normally limited to packages where one or more of these features are considered important enough to warrant the cost.
Courier services operate on all scales, from within specific towns or cities, to regional, national and global services. Large courier companies include DHL, OCS, FedEx, DTDC, EMS International, TNT, UPS, and Aramex. These offer services worldwide, typically via a hub and spoke model.
In ancient history, runners and homing pigeons and riders on horseback were used to deliver timely messages. Before there were mechanized courier services, foot messengers physically ran miles to their destinations. To this day, there are marathons directly related to actual historical messenger routes. In the Middle Ages, royal courts maintained their own messengers who were paid little more than common labourers.

The New Pittsburgh Courier Newspaper remains one of America's premier African American publishing institutions. I, Timothy Cox, served as Entertainment Editor for this publication from '82-'87. This was considered the paper's second Golden Era, the first being the 1940s/50s when legendary figures like Hazel Garland and Teeny "One-Shot" Harris ruled the newsroom. In the 70s/80s, scribes like Lou Ransom, Dennis Schatzman, Eddie Jefferies, Ulish Carter, Ron Suber, Arlethia Johnson, Phil Taylor, Philip Harrigan, Y. Denise Caldwell, Diane Powell, Sonya Johnson, Jefferey Richardson, Mr. Kim Platt, Yancy Miles, Marty Willis and photog Mark Southers, kept the legacy alive. Current Managing Editor Rod Doss and Stephan Broadus are keepers of the paper's proud flame during the past 30 years, ...

From October 11, 1952 to May 3, 1953 Zora Neale Hurston wrote twenty stories for the Pittsburgh Courier Newspaper detailing a landmark case in interracial relations. Using her distinct voice and powerful prose, Hurston's account of the trial of Ruby Jackson McCollum is a cautionary tale about injustice in one of this country's most famous murder cases. This lecture places in dramatic relief not only the trial itself, a trial that shook the foundations of racial segregation, but Hurston's fight to save McCollum from the electric chair, offers resources for 21st century ethicists wrestling with new possibilities for human existence in the midst of the existing social order. Katie G. Cannon, Annie Scales Rogers Professor of Christian Ethics at Union Presbyterian Seminary, presents the Margar...
