Edvard Grieg: Peer Gynt Suite No.1
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) is the greatest composer Norway has fostered. In retrospect one may wonder how a country with neither national freedom nor a long tradition of art music could have produced a man of such genius. Up to 1814 Norway had been totally subject to Denmark, with Copenhagen as its cultural center. From 1814 to 1905 it was forced into a union with Sweden. The first half of the eighteenth century was a time of poverty in Norway and it was some time before it could assert itself among its Scandinavian brothers. But for the highly gifted these are perhaps the ideal conditions for providing impetus and nurturing growth. In the autumn of 1858, Edvard Grieg, then only 15 years old, went to the Leipzig Conservatory to study music. His teachers were among the most eminent in Europe, and four years later he left the Conservatory as a full-fledged musician and composer. In the years up to 1866, Grieg lived in Copenhagen, leaving it only to make brief study trips. Grieg's style was based on the German romantic tradition of music but bit by bit national awareness developed within him, coupled with a growing need to create a typical Norwegian style of music. His friendships and discussions with other young Norwegians also furthered this development. In Copenhagen Grieg had met Rikard Nordraak, whose patriotism reached its fullest expression in the choral setting of Norway's national anthem. In 1869 Grieg, on a state stipend, left for Italy. His encounter with Franz ...

Flash mob in the Copenhagen Metro. Copenhagen Phil playing Peer Gynt.
In April 2012 Copenhagen Phil (Sjællands Symfoniorkester) surprised the passengers in the Copenhagen Metro by playing Griegs Peer Gynt. The flash mob was created in collaboration with Radio Klassisk radioklassisk.dk All music was performed and recorded in the metro. Visit our website: copenhagenphil.dk and facebook: www.facebook.com Produced by makropol.dk The sound: The Copenhagen Metro is very quiet and the recording you hear is where the train is standing still. That's why the recording you hear is so clean and crisp - and the sound is actually surprisingly good in the Copenhagen metro. We did this deliberately because we feel that a good sound experience is vital when trying to portray the actual experience that day. Further to the main recording, when the train was standing still, the recordings from the cameras was, as far as possible, mixed into the sound. Quote from the sound technician: I recorded the sound with XY Oktava MK-012 supercardioid microphones close to the soloists and a set of DPA 4060 omnidirectional microphones as overhead for the rest of the orchestra. For some of the closeupshots, the cameramikes (Sennheiser ME 66) was added.

Edvard Grieg's Solveig's Song
If I had to choose my favorite piece of music for the human voice, it would undoubtebly be Solveig's Song from Grieg's "Peer Gynt". It's in the deceptive simplicity of the piece where lies the beauty. But, strangely enough, of all the versions available there is not one which seems to be the ultimate version. Even Lucia Popp's version, good as it is, is lacking something. The present recording doesn't feature any singers at all, replacing the singer with violins. It remains my favorite version of this song, as it somehow manages to capture each strand of Solveig's sorrow. I hope you will enjoy this :-)! PS If possible, I would be quite interested in learning your favorite renditions of this song ;-)!

Charlton Heston's film debut - Peer Gynt (1941)
Nice short, ethereal and oddly colored experimental treatment of Henrik Ibsen's classic, directed by David Bradley at the ripe age of 21. Notable as the debut of Charlton Heston, you damned dirty ape. He's like 16 years old or something.

Edvard Grieg,"Peer Gynt","In the Hall of the Mountain King"
В пещере Горного Короля, "Пер Гюнт" Эдварда Грига Edvard Hagerup Grieg, "Peer Gynt", "In the Hall of the Mountain King". In the Hall of the Mountain King (Norwegian: I Dovregubbens hall) is a piece of orchestral music, Opus 23, composed by Edvard Grieg for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, which premiered in Oslo on February 24, 1876. (It was later extracted as the final piece of Peer Gynt, Suite No. 1, Op. 46.) Although a performance of the full piece runs to only two and a half minutes, its easily recognizable theme has helped it attain iconic status in popular culture.

Grieg: Peer Gynt, Op. 23 - Prelude, Bridal Procession, Folk Dances (1/10)
Incidental Music to Peer Gynt, Op. 23 (1875) I. Prelude to Act I: At the Wedding II. The Bridal Procession III. Folk Dance: Halling (with Hardanger violin solo) IV. Folk Dance: Springar (with Hardanger violin solo) While the two suites (Op. 46 and Op. 55) from the incidental music to "Peer Gynt" by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) are ubiquitous, the original score is almost never heard in its entirety. Even the very famous movements like "In the Hall of the Mountain King" are rarely performed with the appropriate choral forces. This recording contains all the music Grieg ever included in performances of the incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's play "Peer Gynt" - that is, Grieg's original score (Op. 23), along with a few additional numbers he included in later performances, such as the Norwegian Dances (Op. 35). The play by Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) is in five acts and it concerns the life of the hunter and folk hero Peer Gynt. The work itself was intended as a melodramatic satire on the "Norwegian character," and in it Ibsen attempted to break many conventional practices in theatre at the time. A synopsis of the play is available at the following website: en.wikipedia.org Soprano: Toril Carlsen Mezzo-soprano: Vessa Hanssen Tenor: Kåre Bjørkøy Baritone: Asbjørn Hansli Hardanger violin: Knut Buen Conductor: Per Dreier Chorus master: Oskar Raaum London Symphony Orchestra Oslo Philharmonic Chorus
