Babe (Serbian Cyrillic: Бабе; translation: Grandmas)
The band was formed in 1992 as a side project of Bajaga i Instruktori member Žika Milenković (vocals, guitar), Električni Orgazam member Goran Čavajda (vocals, drums) and Riblja Čorba member Zoran Ilić (guitar). All three being rock veterans, they decided to steadily work within the group during the times when their own bands were taking a work break. Bass guitarist and the initiator of the band formation was Bojan Vasić, who previously played with Ilić in Bezobrazno Zeleno. Milenković's humorous lyrics, stylistically similar to the lyrical style of his former band Mačori (The Cats), and stage performance, based on the experience gained in the long-term activities within the Teatar Levo amateur theatre, soon became the band trademark. During the recording sessions for the band debut album, Vasić left the band, moving to South Africa and eventually only recording a part of the bass sections for the song "Mirko i Marina" ("Mirko and Marina"), being replaced by a former U Škripcu member Dejan Škopelja. Slike iz života jednog idota (Images From an Idiot's Life), released in 1993 and produced by former Električni Orgazam member Ljubomir Jovanović "Jovec", brought Milenković's humorous songs about drunks, drug dealers and erotomaniacs. The album featured guest appearances by Margita Stefanović, Marija Mihajlović, Vidoja Božinović, Branislav Petrović "Banana", Miša Savić, Nenad Stamatović and Del Arno Band members. After the album release, Babe went on a promotional tour ...

Смак - Smak - Шумадијски Блуз - Šumadijski Blues
Smak (Serbian Cyrillic: Смак; trans. ) was a Serbian and former Yugoslav rock band, with strong jazz fusion and blues undertones. It was formed by guitar player Radomir "Točak" Mihailović in Kragujevac, in 1971. The group was, with some breaks, active during the 1970s, 1980s and the 1990s. Under Mihailović's guidance, The band, in all its line-ups, always strove towards a well-thought-out, complex and more rich musical presentation than what the rest of the ex-Yugoslavian scene was offering at the time. Their compositions included lengthy improvisations from all of the musicians (including vocalists). What also set them apart was the intentional use of a Laconic lyrical style, to help with the relative difficulty of pronouncing Serbian Language in energetic rock singing.Smak was formed in 1971 in Kragujevac, SR Serbia (present-day Serbia), by guitar virtuoso Radomir Mihailović, nicknamed "Točak" ("the Wheel"). The first stable line-up, in late 1974, included Točak, drummer Slobodan Stojanović Kepa, bass guitarist Zoran Milanović, singer Boris Arandjelović, and keyboardist Laza Ristovski. They released 3 short play (SP) records from 1974-1975, on which appeared their hit single Ulazak u Harem (Entrance to the Harem). They also appeared as an opening act for the Deep Purple concert in Belgrade 1975. After a successful hit single and a concert with Deep Purple, they released their first LP called Smak 1975. It was one of the best debut albums of all time in ex-Yugoslavia ...

Saban Bajramovic - Pira mange korkoro
Šaban Bajramović (Serbian Cyrillic: Шабан Бајрамовић) (April 16, 1936 -- June 8, 2008) was a Romani musician from Serbia. He was born in Niš where he attended primary school for only the first four years. On quitting school, he picked up his musical education on the street. When he was 19 he ran away from the army out of love for a girl. As a deserter, he was sentenced to three years prison on the island Goli otok, but as he told the military court they could not hold him for so long as he could survive, they raised his punishment to five and a half years. He survived as he was a good goalkeeper in the prison football team. Because of his nimbleness and speed, they called him "Black Panther". Soon he forced his way into the prison orchestra that played, among other things, jazz (mostly Louis Armstrong, Sinatra, and sometimes John Coltrane) with Spanish and Mexican pieces. After Goli otok, his intensive music career began. He made his first record in 1964. He is believed to have composed 650 compositions. In 2008, it was revealed that Bajramović was living impoverished in Niš with serious health complications and was no longer able to walk. The government of Serbia intervened to provide him with some funds, 10 000 euros. He died in Niš on June 8, 2008, from a heart attack. Saban Bajramovic is clearly a giant talent, comparable in his own way to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan or Mari Boine Persen, someone capable of bringing their music to life with such vivid spirituality that it ...

Elektricni Orgazam ... Zlatni papagaj
Elektricni Orgazam Zlatni papagaj Električni orgazam (Serbian Cyrillic: Електрични оргазам; trans. Electric Orgasm) is a band from Belgrade, Serbia. Originally started as a combination of New Wave, punk rock and post-punk, the band later slowly changed their style, becoming a mainstream rock act. New Wave years (1980-1983) The melodic hard rock band Hipnotisano Pile (Hypnotized Chicken), formed in 1979, which got the name by the line from the Iggy Pop song "Lust For Life", consisted of Srđan Gojković "Gile" (drums), Ljubomir Jovanović "Jovec" (guitar), Bojan Banović (vocals), Goran Sinadinović (guitar). The band performed their own material, mainly written by Banović on Guitar festivals in Belgrade. On mid-January 1980, at the Mornar bistro, after a Leb i Sol concert held at Dom Sindikata, Hipnotisano Pile members, drummer Gojković and guitarist Jovanović, were sitting with organ player Ljubomir Đukić "Ljuba", planning to form an ad hoc punk rock group, in which Gojković was to play guitar and sing lead vocals, and Jovanović to switch to playing drums. The band was to play as an opening act for Hipnotisano Pile. The idea for the band name came from Gojković, and, while they were waiting for the waiter, Đukić wrote the lyrics for the song "Konobar" ("The Waiter"). Soon after, Gojković wrote a few more songs, "Krokodili dolaze" ("Crocodiles Are Coming"), "Zlatni papagaj" ("Golden Parrotbill"), and "Vi" ("You"). The band was officially formed on January 13 1980 and was ...

Rambo Amadeus (Serbian Cyrillic: Рамбо Амадеус, born June 14, 1963 in Kotor, Montenegro, SFR Yugoslavia) is the stage name of the Belgrade-based Montenegrin singer-songwriter Antonije Pušić, popular all over the former Yugoslavia. A self-titled "musician, poet, and media manipulator" continues to be one of the most interesting phenomena on music scene(s) of the former Yugoslavia. His songs combine satirical lyrics on the nature of common people and silliness of local politics. He uses a mixture of musical styles (converging towards drum and bass in later works, but involving a lot of turbo-folk elements in earlier songs), and self-conscious ironic wit (for example, one of his aliases is "Rambo Amadeus Svjetski Mega Car" (RASMC) — "Rambo Amadeus World Mega Emperor"). His stage name itself is made from John Rambo and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Known also as a "charming king of jovial pop", his concerts are never mere repetitions of recorded songs, but a mixture of musical improvisation and humor exploiting all aspects of human nature in a crude manner. Some fans compare his style and career path with those of Frank Zappa or Captain Beefheart. He is a graduate of the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and he also completed six grades of elementary music school for piano before dropping out. Before taking up music as a career choice, Rambo was an accomplished competitive sailor. Between 1972 and 1984, he represented Yugoslavia in numerous ...

Holy Serbian Tsar Lazar (Orthodox Miracle)
Stefan Lazar Hrebeljanović (Serbian Cyrillic: Стефан Лазар Хребељановић; 1329 June 28 [OS June 15] 1389), also known as Tsar Lazar (Цар Лазар), was a Serbian noble (knez), ruler of Moravian Serbia, who fought and perished at the Battle of Kosovo, to which his name and life are inextricably tied. He is a heroic figure in Serbia, and a saint of the Serbian Orthodox Church. In Serbian legend, Lazar is said to have been visited by an angel of God on the night before battle, and offered a choice between an earthly or a Heavenly kingdom, which choice would result in a peaceful capitulation or bloody defeat, respectively, at the Battle of Kosovo. "...Prophet Elijah then appeared as a gray falcon to Lazar, bearing a letter from the Mother of God that told him the choice was between holding an earthly kingdom and entering the kingdom of heaven..." [1] Lazar opts for the Heavenly kingdom, which will last "forever and ever"[2], but has to perish on the battlefield. We die with Christ, to live forever, tells he to his soldiers. That Kosovos destination and that Testament, it is a union which Serb people made with God and sealed it with martyrs blood. On Kosovo, Serbs voted with their souls for Kingdom of Heaven and that was and has been their right destination. Since then all Serbs truthful to that Testament are becoming people of God, Christs New Testament nation, heavenly Serbia, part of Gods New Israel. This is why sometimes Serbs refer to themselves as the people of Heaven ...

Balkan tiposistem
Balkan is a new typeface system that consists of Latin and Cyrillic scripts. The use of Latin and Cyrillic typifies the former Yugoslavian countries, today Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro. The Balkan typeface system is a series of fonts that decodes Latin and Cyrillic; it demystifies, depoliticizes, and reconciles them for the sake of education, tolerance and, above all, communication. Though Balkan is a “font” in the usual sense, it is also capable of translating Croatian Latin into Serbian Cyrillic and vice versa. One could therefore think of it as educational software capable of reconciling discrete scripts.

Living in Belgrade: The Serbian Language
The Serbian language very much reflects how Serbia still straddles the boundaries between East and West. Although it’s complex pronunciations make it a challenging language to learn, this Slavic language uses both the Cyrillic and Latin scripts with many letters written and pronounced as in English. While English is widely spoken in Serbia, to enhance your experience of the country it will be beneficial to learn the basics. Bear in mind that signs, including road signs and virtually everything you see, will be written in a mixture of Cyrillic and Latin, so getting to grips with the alphabet is key.

Vostani Serbije (Arise, Serbia) - Old Serbian Revolutionary Anthem
Vostani Serbije (Arise, Serbia; Serbian Cyrillic: Востани Сербије), also known as Pesma na insurekciju Serbijanov (Ode to the Uprising of the Serbs) was a national anthem of revolutionary Serbia, written by Dositej Obradović during the First Serbian Uprising against Ottoman Empire in 1804. It is one of the best known patriotic songs in the country, and for some time it was considered as a potential national anthem following the replacement of the old Yugoslav anthem Hej Sloveni. Arise, Serbia! Arise, empress! and let your children see your face. Make them turn their hearts and eyes on you, and let them hear your sweet voices. Arise, Serbia! You fell asleep a long time ago, And have lain in the dark. Now wake up And rouse the Serbs! Raise high your imperial head, So that land and sea may recognize you again. You fell asleep a long time ago, And have lain in the dark. Now wake up And rouse the Serbs! It was one of the best debut albums of all time in ...
