John Dankworth's last US Concert with Cleo Laine at San Francisco's Rrazz Room October 2009
"When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind him, lies on the paths of men." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Sir John Dankworth, was a great man. In October 2009, at the end of a US tour with his wife, Dame Cleo Laine, Sir John was taken ill. He died Saturday February 6, 2010, at the age of 82 after a long illness. Sir John Dankworth was a pioneer of modern jazz in Britain, a leading composer of film music, saxophonist, clarinetist, bandleader, champion of musical education and husband of jazz singer Dame Cleo Laine. The "Super Couple" married in 1958 and also form a magnificent partnership in jazz. The pair soared to the top of the jazz scene and beyond. Their success allowed them to devote their huge talents to supporting and financing the musical education of others. They devoted their lives to music and to the founding of a musical dynasty. In 1969 they founded the Wavendon Allmusic Plan at the Stables, at their home near Milton Keynes, a development that became internationally famous. Sir John Dankworth is survived by Dame Cleo Laine and their two children, the double-bassist Alex Dankworth and actress/jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth. Some of the numerous jazz musicians with whom Sir John performed include; Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Gerry Mulligan, Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, George Shearing, Toots Thielemans, Benny Goodman, Herbie Hancock, Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson, Mercer Ellington and Dizzy ...

Coda for John Dankworth
As a young teenager in the 80's, I used to go to a week long music camp in the grounds of John Dankworth and Cleo Laine's estate in Buckinghamshire. We camped in tents in a field, and played all sorts of music. This was organised by The Stables which they had set up to give opportunities to musicians. I knew John and Cleo in passing.
In Feburary this year I was working as artist in residence for the Milton Keynes International Festival organised by The Stables... I heard one afternoon that John had passed away. I created this composition later that night using a track from an LP by Cleo Laine and John Williams, and the fading end notes from John's Saxophone.
The piece is presented on six classic portable radios, with the sound being transmitted differently to each set creating a small swimming pool of sound. A tender tribute to a tender man.

Johnny Dankworth - Holloway House.wmv
OK, Folks! Here is my next addition to what is noticeably absent from the body of music here on YouTube. In the early 1970's when my years of wisdom were numbered in single digits, the great Jennings Family of Moss Point/Pascagoula, MS, was shaping my love of jazz, even if they did not know it. My father, *BB Jennings, Jr.* (and his friends, including Gulf Coast Jazz musician Charles Fairley and others) used to listen to a jazz program entitled Holloway House, hosted by the great Dr. Joaquin Holloway, professor at Bishop State out of Mobile, Alabama. Dr. Holloway's soothing voice to a six year old like myself could only be matched by his theme music that he played at the beginning and ending of each jazz program installation, such program installations introducing me to the likes of Donald Byrd, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and others. Notably, I only mention Donald Byrd first as my favorite selection at the time was Flight-Time from the album, Black Byrd. For decades after the program was discontinued and I was old enough to appreciate my heritage, I looked for the theme music to Dr. Holloway's program. Well, folks, for your listening enjoyment, I have finally found it. Here it is. Dr. Holloway, you touched many lives along the Mississippi Gulf Coast! You program is missed even to this day! I would love to connect with you and discuss you vision and how we can save jazz music. Let me know what you think of Johnny Dankworth and this selection, Holloway House, which was ...

Let's Slip Away - Johnny Dankworth
Vocals by Cleo Laine. From the Johnny Dankworth album Let's Slip Away, footage from two films that feature the song; 'Saturday Night And Sunday Morning' (1960) starring Albert Finney and 'A Taste Of Honey' (1961) starring Rita Tushingham. Dame Cleo Laine, the wife of the jazz legend Sir John Dankworth, gave a performance to an audience of hundreds just hours after her husband died in Feburary 2010. Saturday Night and Sunday Morning is a British film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Alan Sillitoe. Sillitoe wrote the screenplay adaptation and the film was directed by Karel Reisz, set in the East Midlands. A Taste of Honey is a British film adaptation of the play of the same name by Shelagh Delaney. Delaney adapted the screenplay herself, aided by director Tony Richardson, who had previously directed the first production of the play. It is an exemplar of a gritty genre of British film that has come to be called kitchen sink realism.
