Kandawgyi Lake (Burmese: ကန်တော်ကြီး pronounced: [kàndɔ̀dʑí]; literally "great royal lake", formerly Royal Lake), is one of two major lakes in Yangon, Burma (Myanmar). Located east of the Shwedagon Pagoda, the lake is artificial; water from Inya Lake is channelled through a series of pipes to Kandawgyi Lake. It was created to provide a clean water supply to the city during the British colonial administration. It is approximately 5 miles (8 km) in circumference, and has a depth of 20 to 45 inches (50 to 115 cms).
The 150-acre (60.7-hectare) lake is surrounded by the 110-acre (44.5-hectare) Kandawgyi Nature Park, and the 69.25-acre (28-hectare) Yangon Zoological Gardens, which consists of a zoo, an aquarium and an amusement park.
The lake itself is bounded by Natmauk Street to its north and east, Bahan Street to its west, and Kanyeiktha Street to its south. Along the eastern shorelines of the lake is the famous Karaweik, a concrete replica of a Burmese royal barge built in 1972. It houses a buffet restaurant today.

We started walking around Yangon and noticed what looked like a park through the fence. We decided to go for a wander - what a good decision. Stunningly beautiful, quiet park in the heart of Yangon. One of the stories I read was that young couples have very little privacy due to small houses in SE Asia so most cities/towns have one park which is unofficially designated for couples to go on dates. It makes so much sense as we must have seen 50 couples in this park. I told this story to a girl from Chile who spoke about Lumpini park in Bangkok and a park in Luang prabang as the same. She added to the story by telling me that some local girls had told her that traditionally young people get 6 chances (that's people not dates). They make a decision about the first and then move onto the second, they can't change their mind. It's essentially a game of blackjack - do I stick or do I twist! If they reach number 6 and don't like one another then they are traditionally supposed to be single for life! Unbelievable!
A little later we happened upon a young couple where the girl was obviously inconsolably upset and the guy looked very awkward. The girl I was walking with looked over and said, "Awwh, it's horrible when you see a couple breaking up." I replied, "They are not breaking up...she's just arrived and met guy number 6!" Heh

A tourists generalizations based on car-borne observations arent worth much, but as we rushed around Myanmar, from Yangon to Bagan to Mandalay to Lake Inle, this sense of travelling amongst friendly, unpredatory people was reinforced ...
