Solin developed on the location of ancient town of Salona which was the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and the birthplace of Emperor Diocletian. Salona was an early Roman settlement, which became overshadowed when Emperor Diocletian constructed the nearby Diocletian's Palace in about the year 300 AD. Viminacijum je arheološko nalazište u blizini Starog Kostolca, 12 kilometara od Požarevca. Rimski vojni logor i grad nastao je u I i trajao do početka VII veka. Bio je jedan od najznačajnijih legijskih logora na Dunavu, a izvesno vreme i glavni grad rimske provincije Gornje Mezije (Moesie Superior), koja je obuhvatala najveći deo Srbije, severnu Makedoniju i deo severozapadne Bugarske.Obimna arheološka istraživanja započeta su zbog izgradnje termoelektrane i površinskog kopa Drmno, 1977. godine, na prostoru nekropola, jugozapadno od kastruma. Istraživanja su dala izuzetno bogat i značajan arheološki materijal. Pronađene su zanatske radionice, ai peći za pečenje opeke. Pronađene su terme, koje su bile glavno sastajalište Rimljana. Iskopano je šest bazena, ponegde se naziru i oslikani zidovi sa cvetnim i životinjskm motivima. U središtu termi bile su prostorije za masažu. Kupatilo je bilo parno: topao vazduh je cirkulisao između stubića i zagrevao opeku ispod podnica. Voda je stizala sa izvora, u slobodnom padu, akveduktom istraženim u dužini od deset kilometara. Pronađene su i svetiljke koje su služile za noćno kupanje. Iskopan je Mauzolej, za koji se pretpostavlja da je grobnica cara Hostilijana, sina cara Trajana Decija, koje je boravio u Viminacijumu tokom 251. godine. The Illyrians, exploiting the privileges of allegiance to Rome, moved up the ranks rather quickly and eventually ruled the empire. Emperors of Illyrian origin reigned in both the Roman and Byzantine empires. ILLYRIAN-ROMAN EMPERORS Claudius II - Gothicus, as he was also known, reigned for a short period from 268-270 AD. He was born in Dardania in 214. He was a Roman officer in the army and upon the death of the Roman emperor Gallenius in 268 was proclaimed emperor by the soldiers and was affirmed by the Roman senate. His reigned was highlighted by several military campaign victories over the invading Goths (Germanic tribe) and for this he named known as Gothicus. He died on the throne in 270. Aurelian - Aurelian reigned from 270-275 AD. Born in Moesia in 214. He received high military status under the reign of Claudius II. Aurelian's emphasis was to restore the general welfare and unity of the empire and was given the title, Restitutor Orbis, or Restorer of the Empire. He commissioned a wall to enclose the city of Rome, but was assassinated by some of his officers in 275 on a expedition to Persia before it was completed. Probus - He reigned from 276-282 AD. He was born in Pannonia. As a Roman officer he kept the Germanic tribes at bay. After the murder of his rival, Probus assumed the throne. Wars against the Muslims By 867, the empire had stabilised its position in both the east and the west, while the success of its defensive military structure had enabled the emperors to begin planning wars of reconquest in the east. The process of reconquest began with variable fortunes. The temporary reconquest of Crete (843) was followed by a crushing Byzantine defeat on the Bosporus, while the emperors were unable to prevent the ongoing Muslim conquest of Sicily (827902). Using present day Tunisia as their launching pad, the Muslims conquered Palermo in 831, Messina in 842, Enna in 859, Syracuse in 878, Catania in 900 and the final Greek stronghold, the fortress of Taormina, in 902. These drawbacks were later counterbalanced by a victorious expedition against Damietta in Egypt (856), the defeat of the Emir of Melitene (863), the confirmation of the imperial authority over Dalmatia (867) and Basil I's offensives towards the Euphrates (870s). The threat from the Arab Muslims was meanwhile reduced by inner struggles and by the rise of the Turks in the east. Muslims received assistance however from the Paulician sect, which had found a large following in the eastern provinces of the Empire and, facing persecution under the Byzantines, often fought under the Arab flag. Dalmatia (Roman province)

(ruled 117-38), showing the imperial province of Dalmatia (Croatia/Bosnia) in southeastern Europe]] Dalmatia was an ancient Roman province. Its name is probably derived from the name of an Illyrian tribe called the Dalmatae which lived in the area of the eastern Adriatic coast in Classical antiquity.

History

The region was the northern part of the Illyrian kingdom between the 4th century BC until the Illyrian Wars in the 220s BC and 168 BC when the Roman Republic established its protectorate south of the river Neretva. Area north of the Neretva was slowly incorporated into roman possessions until the province of Illyricum was formally established c. 32-27 BC

Dalmatia region then became part of the Roman province of Illyricum. Between 6 and 9 AD the Dalmatians raised the last in a series of revolts together with the Pannonians, but it was finally crushed and in 10 AD Illyricum was split into two provinces, Pannonia and Dalmatia. The province of Dalmatia spread inland to cover all of the Dinaric Alps and most of the eastern Adriatic coast. Dalmatia was the birthplace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who, upon retirement from Emperor, built Diocletian's Palace near Salona in today's Croatia.

The historian Theodore Mommsen wrote (in his The Provinces of the Roman Empire) that all Dalmatia was fully romanized and Latin speaking by the 4th century. However, analysis of archaeological material from that period has shown that the process of romanization was rather selective. While urban centers, both coastal and inland, were almost completely romanized, the situation in the countryside was completely different. Despite the Illyrians being subject to a strong process of acculturation, they continued to speak their native language, worship their own gods and traditions, and follow their own social-political tribal organization which was adapted to Roman administration and political structure only in some necessities.

After the Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476, with the beginning of the Migration Period, the region was ruled by the Goths up to 535, when Justinian I added all Dalmatia to the Byzantine Empire.

The first modern account of Roman Dalmatia in English was J.J. Wilkes, Dalmatia (Harvard University Press) 1969. Wilkes surveys Illyricum and Dalmatia, in its Romanized aspects, to the end of Antiquity, based primarily on the evidence of inscriptions and the ancient historians.
