  Adam Oliver
  Adam Oliver (December 11, 1823 – October 9, 1882) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Oxford South in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Liberal member from 1867 to 1876.
  He was born in Queens County, New Brunswick in 1823, grew up there and went to London in Upper Canada in 1836, where he became a carpenter. He moved to Ingersoll in 1850 and established a construction business there and later a lumber yard. He served on the village council and was reeve from 1859 to 1862. Although he was opposed to Ingersoll becoming a town, he served as its first mayor in 1865 and 1866. He was also a captain in the local militia and a magistrate. He was elected to represent Oxford South in the Ontario legislature in 1867 and 1871.
  After fire destroyed his lumber yard in Orillia in 1871, he set up a sawmill and planing mill near Fort William in partnership with a Toronto lumberman and two lawyers from Ingersoll. After Fort William was selected as a major station on the Canadian Pacific Railway, this company profited from land sales to the government and contracts. The residents of nearby Port Arthur protested that this site had been chosen as a result of Oliver's political connections; a federal Liberal government was in power at the time. The Conservative-controlled Senate which conducted an investigation found that there was some substance to these allegations. He had already resigned in 1874 because his company had sold timber to a buyer for the provincial government; members of parliament were not allowed to conduct business with the government. He was reelected in a by-election held later in the same year. He was elected again in 1875 but was unseated after evidence of bribery was found. He died in Ingersoll in 1882.

  Albert Oliver, Jr. (born October 14, 1946 in Portsmouth, Ohio) is a former Major League Baseball player. Over the course of his 18-year career, he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1968–77), Texas Rangers (1978–81), Montreal Expos (1982–83), San Francisco Giants (1984), Philadelphia Phillies (1984), Los Angeles Dodgers (1985) and Toronto Blue Jays (1985). Nicknamed "Scoop", Oliver batted and threw left-handed.
  Oliver was a center fielder who also played left and right as well as first base. He was signed by the Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1964. From 1970 to 1976 he played on five Pirates division champions, including the team that defeated the Orioles in the 1971 World Series.
  Oliver was called to the Major Leagues on September 14, 1968, which was the day his father, Al Oliver, Sr., died. He appeared in 4 games that season. In his official rookie season, Oliver batted .285 with 17 home runs and drove in 70 runs, placing second in the 1969 National League Rookie of the Year voting. The following season, 1970, Oliver hit .270 and was fifth in the NL with seven sacrifice files. He also finished second in the league with the 14 times he was hit by a pitch (the previous year he was plunked 12 times, fourth in the league). The Pirates won the National League East title for their first trip to the postseason since winning the 1960 World Series. However, they lost to the Cincinnati Reds in the NLCS.

  Alexander Oliver (November 30, 1744 – September 2, 1828) was an American soldier who fought during the Revolutionary War.
  Oliver was born in Sherborn, Massachusetts, to Launcelot Oliver and Mary Walker. Before the war he married Mary Warner, third cousin of Seth Warner and seventh cousin of George Washington. His decision to fight against the British was very much disliked by part of his family, mainly because his second cousin was Andrew Oliver, a Massachusetts politician who was commissioned to enforce the Stamp Act in Massachusetts, and another cousin more distant this time Thomas Oliver would become Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. He was made a corporal of 13th Massachusetts Regiment raised by Colonel Samuel Brewer, while in the 13th he fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill, Battle of Valcour Island and Battle of Saratoga where he led a group of men to capture general John Burgoyne. Then he was Regimental Quartermaster of Jeduthan Baldwin's Artillery Artificer Regiment, then an Ensign or Second lieutenant in the 5th Massachusetts Regiment, then a Lieutenant, and then a Colonel for Massachusetts. Alexander Oliver was in charge of recruiting men to fight all around Massachusetts. Oliver was a participant in the Boston Tea Party. Alexander was also in George Washington's staff at Dorchester Heights and was near him as they marched into Boston.

  Andrew Oliver (March 28, 1706 – March 3, 1774) was a merchant and public official in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Born into a wealthy and politically powerful merchant family, he is best known as the Massachusetts official responsible for implementing the provisions of the Stamp Act, for which he was burned in effigy. He never actually carried out those duties, and was later commissioned as the province's lieutenant governor.
  Andrew Oliver was born in Boston, capital of the British Province of Massachusetts Bay, on March 28, 1706. His father, Daniel Oliver, was a wealthy and politically active merchant, and his mother, Elizabeth Belcher Oliver, was the daughter of Jonathan Belcher, son of another wealthy merchant and governor of the province in the 1730s. Andrew had two brothers: Daniel Oliver (1704–1727) and Peter Oliver (1713–1791). Characterized as "sober and pious", Andrew was sent to Harvard College, where he graduated in 1724.
  Oliver then entered the family business, setting up a merchant business with his brother Peter that concentrated on wine and textiles. The business was successful, and the brothers eventually controlled Boston's Long Wharf. On March 20, 1728, Oliver married Mary Fitch, the daughter of Colonel Thomas Fitch. The couple had three children before Mary died in 1732; only one, a son named Andrew, survived to adulthood. After Mary's death Oliver traveled to England, returning to Massachusetts in 1734. On December 19, 1734 he married Mary Sanford of Newport, Rhode Island, the sister-in-law of Thomas Hutchinson. The couple had fourteen children.

  Anton David Oliver (born 9 September 1975 in Invercargill) is a retired New Zealand rugby union footballer who most recently played professionally for the French second-division club Toulon, noted for signing veteran greats including former All Blacks captain Tana Umaga and Australia great George Gregan. Previously, he played as a hooker for Marlborough (one of the predecessors to today's Tasman side) and Otago in the National Provincial Championship and Air New Zealand Cup, the Highlanders in Super 14, and the All Blacks.

He made his first NZ team in 1992 when he played for NZ Under 17s at number 8. The following year he changed positions to hooker and made his provincial debut for Marlborough against Nelson Bays in when he was sixteen. He also represented NZ Secondary schools and 19s in 1993 - captaining both teams. In 1994, he represented NZ Under 19s (again the captain) and NZ Under 21s, and represented the Under 21s for the next two years - captaining the team in his last year.

  Barret Spencer Oliver (born 24 August 1973 in Los Angeles, California, USA) is an American actor and photographer. He is known for his role as Bastian Bux in the film adaptation of Michael Ende's novel The NeverEnding Story followed by roles in D.A.R.Y.L., Cocoon and Cocoon: The Return.
  Oliver had minor roles in television and film until starring as Bastian in the 1984 movie The NeverEnding Story. Subsequently, he was cast as the lead in Tim Burton's short film Frankenweenie and as the android 'Daryl' in the 1985 film D.A.R.Y.L., a part for which he won a Saturn Award. Oliver appeared in the Ron Howard movie Cocoon and later in Cocoon: The Return. His last role in a feature film was Willie Saravian in Paul Bartel's 1989 ensemble comedy Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills.
  In his teens Oliver left acting to join the Church of Scientology's Sea Org and was stationed at its Gold Base compound. As is common practice among teenagers in the Sea Org, he married a fellow Scientologist at age 19. He has since divorced. Later Oliver became a printer and photographer specializing in nineteenth century processes such as collodion and Woodburytype. His work has been displayed in museum and gallery exhibitions and used in films. In 2007 he published A History of the Woodburytype.

  Robert Lee Oliver (born February 8, 1943 in Shreveport, Louisiana) is a former first baseman and outfielder in Major League Baseball who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1965), Kansas City Royals (1969–72), California Angels (1972–74), Baltimore Orioles (1974) and New York Yankees (1975). He batted and threw right-handed.
  Oliver lettered in baseball and basketball at Highlands High School in North Highlands, CA, a suburb of Sacramento. After graduating in 1961, Oliver played baseball at American River College where he was heavily scouted. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates before the 1963 season, Oliver played in the Pirates' farm system for four seasons (with a late call-up in 1965, during which he made his major league debut). He was traded to the Minnesota Twins and spent two more seasons in the minor leagues.
  Oliver made the majors for good in 1969, having been selected by the Kansas City Royals in the previous October's expansion draft. Playing on a young team that also included fellow rookies Pat Kelly and Lou Piniella (the eventual American League Rookie of the Year), Oliver batted .254 with 13 home runs and 43 runs batted in in 118 games played. That year, Oliver achieved two firsts in Royal history: 1) He was the first Royal to collect six hits in a nine-inning game (only two other Royals, Kevin Seitzer in 1987 and Joe Randa in 2004, have since accomplished this feat) with a 6-for-6 performance in a May 4 victory over the California Angels, and 2) he hit the Royals' first-ever grand slam, the shot coming off Jim Bouton in the first game of a July 4 doubleheader against the American League's other 1969 expansion team, the Seattle Pilots.

  Brian Darnell Oliver (born June 1, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois) is a retired American professional basketball player. A 6'4" (1.93 m) and 210 lb (95 kg) shooting guard out of Georgia Tech, he was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA in the 2nd round (32nd overall) of the 1990 Draft. Oliver played four years in the league, mainly with the 76ers from 1990–1992 and two brief stints with the Washington Bullets (1994–95) and Atlanta Hawks (1997–98). His best year as a pro came during his rookie year with the Sixers, appearing in 73 games and averaging 3.8 ppg.
  Brian Oliver, along with Dennis Scott and Kenny Anderson, formed the famed trio "Lethal Weapon 3" which led the GT basketball team to the final four in 1990. In 1999, he teamed with Manu Ginóbili, Brent Scott and Sydney Johnson to win a championship for Viola Reggio Calabria.

In 2011, Oliver again teamed with Hardy to work on the track "Resurrected", which Hardy announced on his official twitter page.   Damien Oliver (born 22 June 1972 in Perth, Western Australia) is a Thoroughbred horse racing jockey.
  Oliver comes from a racing family; his father Ray Oliver rode with success until meeting his death in a race fall at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The younger of two sons, Damien has reached greater heights than his brother Jason Oliver who was killed in a fall at Belmont Park Racecourse, Western Australia when a young horse he was riding broke both front legs and fell during a race trial. The horse was found to have been administered phenylbutazone prior to the trial and this was thought to be a contributing factor in the accident.
  Damien returned to riding in 2006 after serious back injuries sustained in a fall at Moonee Valley, and rode the Japanese horse Pop Rock in the 2006 Melbourne Cup, which finished second to stablemate Delta Blues. In the 2007 Melbourne Cup, he placed second to Efficient on English horse Purple Moon.
  Oliver has won the Melbourne Cup on Doriemus (1995) Media Puzzle (2002), the Caulfield Cup on Mannerism (1992), Paris Lane (1994), Doriemus (1995), and Sky Heights (1999), and the Cox Plate on Dane Ripper (1997) and Northerly (2001). He was also the regular rider of Lee Freedman's champion sprinter Schillaci (1991–95) and top filly Alinghi (2003–05). In the 2007 Golden Slipper, Damien completed the grand slam of Australian racing by winning the 2 year old race on the John Hawkes trained Forensics.

  Daniel Oliver, FRS (6 February 1830 – 21 December 1916) was a British botanist.
  He was Librarian of the Herbarium, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew from 1860–1890 and Keeper there from 1864–1890, and Professor of Botany at University College, London from 1861–1888.
  In 1864, while at UCL, he published Lessons in Elementary Biology, based upon material left in manuscript by John Stevens Henslow, and illustrated by Henslow's daughter, Anne Barnard of Cheltenham. With a second edition in 1869 and a third in 1878 this book was reprinted until at least 1891.   Darren Christopher Oliver (born October 6, 1970) is an American professional baseball pitcher with the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball.
  Oliver was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 3rd round of the 1988 Major League Baseball Draft, and has had three separate stints with the club.
  Oliver is the son of former infielder Bob Oliver. Darren played baseball and basketball at Rio Linda High School in Rio Linda, California. He gained his infamous nickname, 'DGO' at an early age. DGO standing for Darren 'The Groid' Oliver.
  Oliver made his major league debut on September 1, 1993, at the age of 22 at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox. In 1996, Oliver became a starter for the Rangers and won 14 games. Oliver is the first pitcher ever to pitch in interleague play. He was the starting pitcher in the Texas Rangers' 4–3 loss to the San Francisco Giants on June 12, 1997 at The Ballpark in Arlington. From 1996 to 1998, Oliver pitched for the Rangers and then was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals for whom he pitched until 1999, returning to the Rangers for the next two years. As a Cardinal, he was also the starting and winning pitcher in the game where Mark McGwire hit his record-tying 61st home run on September 7, 1998.

  David Oliver (January 31, 1962 - November 12, 1992) was an American actor best known for roles on two television programs.
  From 1983 to 1985, he played the role of Perry Hutchins on the daytime soap opera Another World. In 1986 he played the role of Sam Gardner in the miniseries A Year in the Life. The miniseries then became a regular series in the fall of 1987 and ran on NBC for one season. Oliver's wife in both the miniseries and regular series was played by a young Sarah Jessica Parker.

  Deanna Oliver (born September 27, 1952) is an American actress who did the voice of Toaster in the 1987 film, The Brave Little Toaster and its sequels. She also is the producer of My Favorite Martian & other films. In addition, she was a writer of the 1993 television show, Animaniacs and the 1990 show Tiny Toon Adventures. Sherri Stoner worked with her for Universal's Casper in 1995. Later in the year of 2007, Deanna worked with Bee Keeper, Norm Gary to create the World's First Bee Bikini. In 47 minutes, Norm was able to put a total of more than 16,000 bees on her. It wasn't easy with a total of four bees that had stung her during the process.
  In 2010, she made an appearance at California State University, Northridge with director Jerry Rees to discuss the making of their film, The Brave Little Toaster. She has a son, who according to Oliver, was deployed to serve in Afghanistan some months before the interview. At the deployment ceremony, some of the soldiers who were fans of the film had brought their toasters with them for her to autograph.

  Jovan Oliver Grčinić (Serbian: Јован Оливер Грчинић; ca. 1310-1356) was a magnate of the Serbian Emperor Dušan the Mighty (r. 1331-1355), holding the titles of sebastokrator and despotes, and the rank of "great voivode", showing his prominence and status as one of the most important nobles of Dušan. Oliver supported Dušan in the succession war against his father, and was one of the supreme generals in the southern military expeditions (Macedonia, Thessaly). His province included Ovče Pole and the left bank of the Vardar. After the death of Emperor Dušan, there are no more mentions of Oliver. During the fall of the Serbian Empire, his lands were held by the Dejanovići.
  Jovan was the son a vlastelin Grčin (Грчин, "Greek") who had lands in some part of the Serbian Kingdom.
  Jovan is referred to in a Ragusan source as Oliver Grčinić, his knowledge of Greek lends support to the notion of Greek origin. He ruled his domain, in the modern-day Republic of Macedonia, as a semi-independent prince, acknowledging Dušan's suzerainty but not subordinate to him. He probably had supported Dušan's overthrow of his father, King Uroš III, in 1331, and after the death of his first wife, Karavida, in 1336, he married Maria Palaiologina, Dušan's stepmother. There is considerable scholarly debate as to when Jovan Oliver acquired his domains, i.e. whether he held them before Dušan's accession, whether they were granted to him by Dušan as a reward for his support, or whether he gained them as a result of his marriage to Maria.

• Donald Oliver
  Donald H. Oliver, QC (born November 16, 1938) is a Canadian Senator.
  A lawyer and developer, Oliver is a member of Nova Scotia's Black minority. He is the nephew of Canadian opera singer Portia White, politician Bill White and labour union activist Jack White, and the cousin of political strategist Sheila White. He is descended from slave refugees who came to Canada during the War of 1812.
  Oliver practised law in Halifax, Nova Scotia as a partner in the firm Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales from 1965 to 1990, and subsequently at two other law firms for a total of 36 years, primarily in civil litigation. He taught at Dalhousie University Law School as a part-time professor for 14 years, and also taught law courses at Technical University of Nova Scotia and St. Mary’s University. He is a Queen's Counsel.
  A long-time activist in the Progressive Conservative Party, Oliver served as the party's director of legal affairs through six federal elections from 1972 to 1988. He has also served as a federal vice-president of the party and as a director of its fundraising wing, the PC Canada Fund.

  Edna May Oliver (November 9, 1883 – November 9, 1942) was an American stage and film actress. During the 1930s, she was one of the best-known character actresses in American films, often playing tart-tongued spinsters.
  Born Edna May Nutter in Malden, Massachusetts, the daughter of Ida May and Charles Edward Nutter, Edna was a descendant of the sixth American president, John Quincy Adams. She quit school at age fourteen in order to pursue a career on stage and achieved her first success in 1917 on Broadway in Jerome Kern's musical comedy Oh, Boy!, playing the hero's comically dour Quaker Aunt Penelope.
  In 1925, Oliver appeared on Broadway in The Cradle Snatchers co-starring Mary Boland, Margaret Dale, Gene Raymond, Raymond Hackett and a young Humphrey Bogart. Oliver's most notable stage appearance was as Parthy, wife of Cap'n Andy Hawks, in the original 1927 stage production of the musical Show Boat. She repeated the role in the 1932 Broadway revival, but turned down the chance to play Parthy in the 1936 film version of the show so that she could play the Nurse in that year's film version of Romeo and Juliet, her only role in a Shakespeare film or play.

  Farquhar Oliver
  Farquhar Robert Oliver (March 6, 1904 – January 22, 1989) was a politician in Ontario, Canada.
  Oliver was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a United Farmers of Ontario Member of the Legislative Assembly in the 1926 provincial election at the age of 22.
  Oliver was re-elected as a UFO MLA in the 1929 election and was the sole (and last) United Farmers member in the legislature until 1940. In that year, he formally joined the Ontario Liberal Party and the cabinet of Premier Mitchell Hepburn as Minister of Public Works and Welfare after informally supporting the Liberals since 1934. Oliver quit the cabinet in late October 1942, in protest against Hepburn's leadership of the Liberal Party. Hepburn had quit as Premier of Ontario but refused to resign as leader, and appointed Gordon Daniel Conant as the new Premier without consulting the party. Oliver's resignation contributed to a crisis that eventually led to both Hepburn and Conant's resignations and a leadership convention in May 1943. Harry Nixon was elected the party's new leader. Oliver rejoined the cabinet under new Premier Harry Nixon as Deputy Premier, but Nixon's government was short-lived, going down to defeat in the October 1943 election.

  Frank Oliver (October 2, 1883 - January 1, 1968) was a U.S. Representative from New York.
  Born in New York City, Oliver attended the public schools and the Morris High School (Bronx, New York). He graduated from Fordham University at New York City in 1905, and studied law at the New York Law School. He was admitted to the bar in 1908 and commenced practice in New York City. He was appointed on December 1, 1908, chief of the bureau of licenses for New York City and served until April 16, 1911, when he resigned to become secretary to United States Senator James A. O'Gorman, of New York, in which capacity he served until his resignation on January 3, 1916. He was appointed chief clerk to the magistrates' courts of New York City and served from January 3, 1916, until December 31, 1919. He was appointed assistant district attorney for Bronx County on January 1, 1920, and served until February 28, 1923, when he resigned, having been elected to Congress.
  Oliver was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-eighth and to the five succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1923, until his resignation on June 18, 1934. He was appointed on June 19, 1934, justice of the court of special sessions, in which capacity he served until his retirement April 6, 1952. He died in the Bronx, New York, January 1, 1968. He was interred in Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, New York City.

  Eugene George Oliver (March 22, 1935 – March 3, 2007) was an American catcher and first baseman in Major League Baseball. From 1959 through 1969, Oliver played for the St. Louis Cardinals (1959, 1961–63), Milwaukee & Atlanta Braves (1963–67), Philadelphia Phillies (1967), Boston Red Sox (1968) and Chicago Cubs (1968–69). He batted and threw right-handed.
  Oliver was a regular catcher for the Cardinals in 1962 and the Phillies in 1967, but most of his career he served as a back-up. Oliver had a strong arm and was good at blocking the plate. As a batter, he had some power and decent speed for a catcher.
  In 1965, Oliver reached a high-career mark of 21 home runs with the Milwaukee Braves, enabling the team to set a National League record with six 20-HR hitters in one season. On June 8 of that year, Torre, Mathews, Aaron and Oliver hit 10th-inning home runs in a Braves victory over the Cubs, setting a major league record for most home runs in an extra-inning game.
  The Phillies and Braves switched catchers in 1967, with Bob Uecker going to Atlanta. After the trade, Oliver suffered a severe knee injury that shortened his career.

  Admiral Sir Geoffrey Nigel Oliver GBE, KCB, DSO & Two Bars (22 January 1898 – 26 May 1980) was a British Royal Navy officer during the Second World War.
  The oldest son of a botanist, Professor Francis Wall Oliver, Geoffrey Oliver was educated at Durnford Preparatory School in Langton Matravers, and at Rugby School, and joined the Royal Navy in 1915 as a Special Entry Cadet at Keyham College. He was assigned as a midshipman to HMS Dreadnought in 1916.
  In May 1917 he was reassigned to HMS Renown and in September promoted to sub-lieutenant. In October 1918 he was promoted again, to Lieutenant following technical courses in which he performed brilliantly, obtaining First Class certificates in all five subjects, and receiving the Goodenough Medal and prize as the best gunnery student in his year.
  After a short period serving on HMS Resolution, in 1920 he attended two terms at Queens' College, Cambridge to make up for the short education he received because of the war, followed by promotion courses into 1921. Following this he specialised in gunnery and underwent training at the Royal Navy gunnery school, HMS Excellent, in Portsmouth. He was top of his class in both theory and practical work and was awarded the Commander Egerton prize for the best examination result in practical gunnery.

  Glynis Wein (née Oliver) is an artist who has worked as a colorist in the comics industry.
  For several years, she was married to Len Wein. She returned to her maiden name in 1985. In the fall of 1972, Len Wein and writers Gerry Conway and Steve Englehart crafted a metafictional unofficial crossover spanning titles from both major comics companies. Each comic featured Englehart, Conway, and Len Wein, as well as Glynis Wein, interacting with Marvel or DC characters at the Rutland Halloween Parade in Rutland, Vermont. Beginning in Amazing Adventures #16 (by Englehart with art by Bob Brown and Frank McLaughlin), the story continued in Justice League of America #103 (by Len Wein, Dick Dillin and Dick Giordano), and concluded in Thor #207 (by Conway and penciler John Buscema).

  Graham Oliver (born 6 July 1952, Mexborough, South Yorkshire, England) is an English guitarist.
  He played with the heavy metal band Saxon from 1977 to 1994. After leaving the band, he initially reformed his old band Son of a Bitch with former Saxon bassist Steve Dawson and drummer Pete Gill. Son of a Bitch released the album Victim You with Thunderhead singer, Ted Bullet.
  Bullet and Gill left the band after the release of the album. They were replaced by the vocalist John Ward, and another former member of Saxon, Nigel Durham on drums. Oliver and Dawson changed the name of the band to Oliver/Dawson Saxon, and undertook a UK tour with Ronnie James Dio. Graham also duetted with Doug Aldrich on "Rainbow in the Dark" on the last gig at Plymouth. They initially performed under the Saxon name before being halted by legal action taken by the version of Saxon featuring Biff Byford.
  Oliver has also released the solo album End Of An Era. Five of the tracks were written and performed by the rock indie band Bullrush, with whom Graham Oliver's son Paul played drums, along Steve Tudberry and Scott Howitt. Also appearing on the album were Pete Gill, Steve Dawson, Kev Moore, Paul Johnson, Phil Hendriks, Richard Spencer and Chris Archer.

  Harry Oliver (April 4, 1888 – July 4, 1973) was an American humorist, artist, and Academy Award nominated art director of films from the 1920s and 1930s. Besides his outstanding work in Hollywood, he is now best remembered for his humorous writings about the American Southwest, and his publication (1946–1964) of the Desert Rat Scrap Book, an irregular broadsheet devoted to the Southwest. He was born in Hastings, Minnesota and died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California.
  He is known for his Hollywood work as art director on the films Seventh Heaven (1927) and Street Angel (1928), for which he was nominated for the very first Academy Awards, as well as set design or art direction on the films Ben Hur (1925), Sparrows (1926), Scarface (1932), Viva Villa! (1934), Mark of the Vampire (1935), and The Good Earth (1937).
  Harold Griffith Oliver was born in Hastings, Minnesota, April 4, 1888, to Mary Simmons (born in Minnesota) and Frederick William Oliver (born in England). Raised in a Tom Sawyer environment, he associated with trappers, timbermen and steamboat men, and became an expert canoesman, guide, and muskrat hunter while a very young man.   Admiral of the Fleet Sir Henry Francis Oliver, GCB, KCMG, MVO (22 January 1865 – 15 October 1965) was a British naval officer.
  Oliver entered the Royal Navy in July, 1878 as a Naval Cadet in the Navigating Branch, before transferring to the Executive Branch. In 1913 he became the Director of the Intelligence Division of the Admiralty War Staff. From 14 October 1914, two months after the outbreak of the First World War, he was promoted to Naval Secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill. In November 1914, Oliver became Chief of the Admiralty War Staff with the acting rank of Vice-Admiral. In May 1917 he was elevated to Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff and became an additional Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty.
  In early 1918 he left the Admiralty and reverted to his substantive rank of Rear-Admiral, commanding the First Battle Cruiser Squadron in the Grand Fleet. On 1 January 1919 Oliver was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral. Later that year he commanded the 1st Battle Cruiser Squadron and then commanded the Home Fleet. In 1920 he became Second Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Personnel, and remained at the Admiralty until 1924, being promoted to the rank of Admiral on 1 November 1923. His final command was that of the Atlantic Fleet, which he held from 1924 to 1927, striking his flag in Revenge on 15 August 1927 after the customary period of three years. Oliver was promoted to the Navy's highest rank, Admiral of the Fleet, on 21 January 1928 and promoted to GCB on 4 June. He was placed on the Retired List on 21 January 1933.

  Isaac Oliver
  Isaac Oliver (c. 1565 – bur. October 2, 1617) was a French-born English portrait miniature painter.
  Born in Rouen, he moved to London in 1568 with his Huguenot parents Peter and Epiphany Oliver to escape the Wars of Religion in France. He then studied miniature painting under Nicholas Hilliard; and developed a naturalistic style, which was largely influenced by Italian and Flemish art. His first wife, Elizabeth, died in 1599. With her he fathered Peter Oliver, who was also a famous "limner". In 1602 he married Sara, daughter of the well-known portrait painter Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder (c. 1520 – c. 1590) and his wife Susannah de Critz. Susannah was the daughter of Troilus de Critz, a goldsmith from Antwerp, and close relative of John de Critz, the Queen's Serjeant-Painter. She was also the older sister or cousin of Magdalen de Critz who married Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger (1562 – 1635).
  After the death of Elizabeth I, he became a painter of James I's court, painting numerous portraits of the queen Anne of Denmark and Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales.

  Keith Jack Oliver, better known as Jackie Oliver, (born 14 August 1942 in Chadwell Heath, Essex) is a British former Formula One driver and team-owner from England. He is perhaps better known now as the founder of the Arrows team rather than as a racing driver, although during his driving career he won both the 24 Hours of Le Mans race and the Can-Am championship.
  Oliver began a long career in motorsport in 1961, driving a Mini in British club saloon racing. He then upgraded to a Lotus Elan and entered GT racing, scoring some excellent results, and then having a difficult time in Formula Three, where his natural speed was blighted by mechanical failures.
  Nevertheless, for 1967 he was drafted into the Team Lotus Formula Two team, which also saw him making his Grand Prix debut in the F2 class at the German Grand Prix, where he came 5th overall and won the F2 class. In 1968 he was called up by Colin Chapman to take over the works F1 seat for Team Lotus after the death of Jim Clark. His contract did not include an F2 drive. In discussions with Tony Rudlin, a failed racing driver, at that time responsible for running the Herts and Essex Aero Club for ex-world motor cycling champion, Roger Frogley, a deal was struck to run in the club's colours. Lotus supplied and ran the car, supplied the mechanics and generally acted as competition managers while Rudlin was team manager. The F2 team was reasonably successful although not running full Team Lotus spec. At the end of the year the team was invited to compete in the four races making up the Argentine Temporada. The Herts and Essex Team finished third overall in the series. The F1 season would turn out to be difficult, with Oliver struggling for finishes. He led the British Grand Prix until an engine failure, and would only finish twice, his best result being 3rd place at the season-closing Mexican Grand Prix.

  Jimmy Allen Oliver (born July 12, 1969 in Menifee, Arkansas) is an American professional basketball player who was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2nd round (39th overall) of the 1991 NBA Draft.
  Jimmy "Slice" Oliver attended Purdue University, located in West Lafayette, Indiana and played under head coach Gene Keady. The 6'6", 208 lb guard-forward appeared in 31 games in his Sophomore season, playing behind Center Steve Scheffler and alongside guard Matt Painter. He averaged 5.3 points while averaging 18.2 minutes per game in his first eligible season.
  Jimmy started his Junior season out receiving more minutes and improved his shooting percentage to nearly 50%, while also improving his points average to 8 a game. He helped lead the Boilers to a 2nd place finish in the Big Ten Conference and to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament with a 22-8 record.
  Averaging 19.2 points a game during his Senior year, fourth in the conference, and owning an .861 free throw percentage to lead the conference, he was an All-Big Ten First Team selection. Jimmy led Purdue to a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. He finished his college career with a 40.6% accuracy from 3-point land. Jimmy led the Boilers in assists (89) and minutes per game (35.4) in his Senior season. He played his last collegiate game in the NABC All-America Game at the 1991 NCAA Final Four, where he recorded a game-high 25 points.

  Joe "King" Oliver
  Joe "King" Oliver (May 11, 1885 – April 10, 1938) was a jazz cornet player and bandleader. He was particularly noted for his playing style, pioneering the use of mutes. Also a notable composer, he wrote many tunes still played regularly, including "Dipper Mouth Blues", "Sweet Like This", "Canal Street Blues", and "Doctor Jazz". He was the mentor and teacher of Louis Armstrong. His influence was such that Armstrong claimed, "if it had not been for Joe Oliver, jazz would not be what it is today".
  Joseph Oliver was born in Aben, Louisiana, near Donaldsonville in Ascension Parish, and moved to New Orleans in his youth. Oliver played cornet in the New Orleans brass bands and dance bands and also in the city's red-light district, Storyville. The band he co-led with trombonist Kid Ory was considered New Orleans' hottest and best in the 1910s. Oliver achieved great popularity in New Orleans across economic and racial lines, and was in demand for playing jobs from rough working class black dance halls to white society debutante parties.

  John "Jack" Ertle Oliver (September 26, 1923 – January 5, 2011) was an American scientist. Oliver, who earned his PhD. at Columbia University in 1953, studied earthquakes and ultimately provided seismic evidence supporting plate tectonics. In the 1960s, Oliver and his former graduate student, Bryan Isacks, set up seismographic stations in the South Pacific to record earthquake activity, and the data collected led to the insight that part of the ocean floor was being pushed downward.
  Jack Oliver was born in Massillon, Ohio, and was a member of the Massillon Washington High School football team coached by future Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Paul Brown. He attended Columbia on a football scholarship, interrupted by his service with the United States navy as a Seabee in the South Pacific during World War II. After completing his military service, he returned to Columbia, earning his bachelor's degree in 1947. He then went on to earn a master's degree in physics there and, in 1953, a PhD. in geophysics at Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

  Nancy Oliver (born February 8, 1955) is an American playwright and screenwriter. Best known for her work on the successful TV series Six Feet Under, Oliver was nominated for an Academy Award for Writing Original Screenplay in 2008 for her debut screenplay, Lars and the Real Girl.
  Oliver was born in Syracuse, NY and raised in Framingham, Massachusetts. She began writing at an early age and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Amherst. During this time she was involved with the university's theater department as a performer.
  While attending Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida for theatre, Oliver met director and screenwriter Alan Ball in 1976. Together they founded the General Nonsense Theater Company, a satirical ensemble for which the two wrote, staged and starred in subversive comical sketches. She was also a member of Alarm Dog Rep. A playwright whose work includes Office, Dreams Are Funny, Calypso" and "VW as well as several plays for young people, she twice won Florida's Individual Artist Grant for Playwriting. In addition to working previously as a teacher, columnist and newspaper editor, she studied Drama at the Banff Fine Arts Center in Canada and Trinity College, Oxford. She earned a Master of Arts degree in Acting and Directing from Florida State University.

  Neil Oliver (born Ayr, 2 March 1967) is a Scottish broadcaster and author. He grew up in Ayr and Dumfries before attending Glasgow University to study archaeology. He is best known as a presenter of the documentary series Coast.
  Oliver's television debut came in 2002 with BBC Two's Two Men in a Trench, which featured Oliver and close friend, Tony Pollard, visiting historic British battlefields and recreating the battle situation using state of the art archaeological techniques. In addition to the TV series, Oliver co-wrote the two accompanying books.
  In 2005, he wrote a tie-in book for the Channel 4 documentary, Not Forgotten which starred Ian Hislop. Oliver then became the archaeological and social history expert on Coast, then in the next series he replaced Nicholas Crane as the show's main presenter and remained as such for the third and fourth series.
  2006 saw Oliver appear in two more documentary series, Channel 4's The Face of Britain and BBC Two's Scotland's History: The Top Ten. As well as this, in August 2006 he appeared on the special "Big Royal Dig" edition of Channel 4's Time Team, in which he presented a dig at Holyrood Palace.

  Born in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, he began singing as an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the early 1960s. He was a member of two music groups — The Virginians and, later, The Good Earth — and was then known as Bill Swofford.
  His clean-cut good looks and soaring baritone voice were the perfect vehicle for the uptempo single entitled "Good Morning Starshine" from the pop/rock musical "Hair," which reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1969, sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. a month later. Later that fall, a softer, ballad single entitled "Jean" (the theme from the Oscar-winning film The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie) bested his previous effort by one, reaching #2 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard Easy Listening chart. Written by longtime beatnik poet Rod McKuen, "Jean" also sold over one million copies, garnering Oliver his second gold disc in as many months.   Oliver was born in Dallas, Texas. With her father being in the U.S. Air Force, Oliver and her family moved several times during her childhood, Texas, Michigan, Washington, California and Florida. Instead of watching children's shows, Oliver preferred watching sports.

  Oliver began her broadcasting career at WALB in Albany, Georgia in 1985 as a news reporter. The next year, Oliver moved to WAAY-TV in Huntsville, Alabama. After that stop, Oliver moved to WIVB-TV in Buffalo, New York in 1988. Two years later in 1990, Oliver moved to WTVT in Tampa, Florida, where she began her career as a sports anchor in 1991. Oliver moved to KHOU-TV in Houston, where she continued to be a sports anchor. In 1993, Oliver joined the sports television network ESPN. In 1995, Oliver joined Fox Sports, where she worked as a sideline reporter at NFL games. In 2005, Oliver joined TNT as a sideline reporter for their NBA Playoffs coverage. Pam Oliver also has her own dressing room at the new Cowboys Stadium with her name on a star on the door.

After graduation from University College, Oxford, he started his lexicographic career as editor of the Hamlyn Encyclopedic World Dictionary (1971).   Paul Ambrose Oliver (July 18, 1831 – May 17, 1912) was an American explosives inventor, American Civil War Union Army captain and staff officer who was appointed to the brevet grade of brigadier general and Medal of Honor recipient. He was born on the USS Louisiana during one of its voyages in the English Channel. Before the Civil War, he worked as a shipping merchant.
  In January 1862, Oliver joined the 12th New York Infantry as a second lieutenant. During the war, he served as an aide to no less than 4 generals, including Daniel Butterfield, George Meade, Joseph Hooker and Gouverneur K. Warren. While he accepted a promotion to Captain in April 1864, he declined further promotions. On March 8, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln nominated Oliver for appointment as a brevet brigadier general to rank from March 8, 1865 and the U.S. Senate confirmed the appointment on March 10, 1865. Oliver resigned his commission on May 6, 1865.

  Raymond Oliver (1909–1990) was chef and owner of Le Grand Véfour restaurant in Paris, one of France's great historical restaurants. Oliver detested the nouvelle cuisine, preferring the rich ingredients favored by the chefs in his native Gascony.
  Oliver, who was born in Langon in the Bordeaux region of France, was the son and grandson of cooks. His maternal grandmother gave him his first instruction in cooking as a boy, and he began his apprenticeship as a chef under his father at the age of 15.
  For more than 35 years, he was the owner of Le Grand Vefour on the Rue de Beaujolais in the Palais-Royal district. His celebrity clientele ranged from statesmen like Winston Churchill and Andre Malraux, to writers including Albert Camus and Georges Simenon, to the industrialists and financiers Henry Ford and David Rockefeller. The Aga Khan, and Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco were among his appreciative clients, as were Jean Cocteau and Colette.
  During World War II, Oliver operated a hotel in the French Alps, organized a Resistance cell, and hid Allied airmen who had been shot down on bombing missions. He sheltered an 11-man American bomber crew until the liberation and was later decorated by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. In 1948, he purchased Le Grand Vefour, a restaurant dating to 1784. Six years after Oliver bought the restaurant, it was awarded the prized third star by the Michelin Guide (France's atlas to good dining), one of only a handful of kitchens that were so honored at that time.

  Revilo Pendleton Oliver (July 7, 1908 — August 20, 1994) was an American professor of Classical philology, Spanish, and Italian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who wrote and polemicized extensively for white supremacist causes.
  Oliver also briefly received national notoriety in the 1960s when he published an article following the John F. Kennedy assassination, suggesting that Lee Harvey Oswald was part of a Soviet conspiracy against the United States; in response, he was called to testify before the Warren Commission.
  Oliver was born near Corpus Christi, Texas in 1908. He attended two years of high school in Illinois. Disliking the severe winters, and once requiring hospitalization "for one of the first mastoidectomies performed as more than a daring experiment", he relocated to California, studying Sanskrit, using Max Müller's handbooks and Monier Williams' grammar, later finding a Hindu missionary to tutor him.
  As an adolescent, he found amusement in going to watch evangelists "pitch the woo at the simple-minded", attending performances of Aimee Semple McPherson and Katherine Tingley. He entered Pomona College in Claremont, California, when he was sixteen.

  Roland (Frankish: Hruodland) (died 14 August 778) was a Frankish military leader under Charlemagne who became one of the principal figures in the literary cycle known as the Matter of France. Historically, Roland was military governor of the Breton March, with responsibility for defending the frontier of Francia against the Bretons. His only historical attestation is in Einhard's Vita Karoli Magni, which describes him as Hruodlandus Brittannici limitis praefectus ("Roland, prefect of the limits of Brittany") when narrating his death at the Battle of Roncesvalles, when the rearguard, under his command, and the baggage train of a Frankish army was beset by rebellious Basques.
  Roland's death during retreat from the Battle of Roncevaux Pass in Iberia was transmogrified in later medieval and Renaissance literature. He became the chief paladin of the emperor Charlemagne and a central figure in the legendary material surrounding him, collectively known as the Matter of France. The first and most famous of these epic treatments was the Old French Chanson de Roland of the eleventh century. Two masterpieces of Italian Renaissance poetry, the Orlando innamorato and Orlando furioso, are even further detached from history than the earlier Chansons. Roland is poetically associated with his sword Durendal, his horse Veillantif, and his horn Oliphaunt.

  Melvin "Sy" Oliver (December 17, 1910 in Battle Creek, Michigan – May 28, 1988 in New York City) was a jazz arranger, trumpeter, composer, singer and bandleader. His mother was a piano teacher and his father was a multi-instrumentalist who made a name for himself demonstrating saxophones at a time that instrument was little used outside of marching bands.
  Oliver left home at 17 to play with Zack Whyte and his Chocolate Beau Brummels and later with Alphonse Trent. He sang and played trumpet with these bands, becoming known for his "growling" horn playing.
  Sy arranged and conducted many songs for Ella Fitzgerald from her Decca years.
  As a composer, one of his most famous songs was T'ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It) which he co-wrote with Trummy Young.
  He joined Jimmie Lunceford's band in 1933 and contributed many hit arrangements to the band, including "My Blue Heaven" and "Ain't She Sweet". In 1939, he became one of the first African Americans with a prominent role in a white band when he joined Tommy Dorsey as an arranger, though he ceased playing trumpet at that time. (Fletcher Henderson joined the Benny Goodman orchestra as the arranger in the same year.) He led the transition of the Dorsey band from Dixieland to modern big band. His joining was instrumental in Buddy Rich's decision to join Dorsey. His arrangement of "On the Sunny Side of the Street" was a big hit for Dorsey, as were his own compositions "Yes Indeed" (a gospel-jazz tune that was later recorded by Ray Charles), "Opus One," "The Minor is Muggin'," "T.D.'s Boogie Woogie," and "Well, Git It."

  Vic Oliver, born Victor Oliver von Samek, (8 July 1898 – 15 August 1964) was an actor and radio comedian.
  He was born in Vienna, Austria, the son of Viktor von Samek and came to England via America.
  He starred in the BBC radio show Hi, Gang! along with Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels; and appeared in many others, including Discord in Three Flats (1962) with Cicely Courtneidge and Jack Hulbert. He was a skilled musician and played the violin (deliberately badly in his shows). He had aspirations as a conductor and founded the Vic Oliver Concert Orchestra which gave light classical concerts along the south coast of England. His theme tune was Prelude to the Stars. He was a regular on Henry Hall's Guest Night and Workers' Playtime and, as a music-based comedian, has been considered a precursor of Victor Borge. He was the very first 'castaway' on the long-running radio series Desert Island Discs in 1942. As a Jew, his name was listed on a Nazi blacklist (known as "The Black Book") of people to be arrested (and killed) immediately on a successful German invasion of Britain.

He studied at Victoria University of Wellington (MA) and completed a PhD at Oxford University in 1953.   Walter Reginald Brook Oliver (1883–1957) was an Australian-born New Zealand naturalist, ornithologist, malacologist and museum curator.
  Born in Launceston, Tasmania, Oliver emigrated with his family to Tauranga in 1896. Having already developed an interest in nature during his childhood, he systematically recorded natural observations throughout much of his life, joining other naturalists on an expedition to the Kermadec Islands as early as 1908.
  In 1910 he became a member of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (RAOU) for which body he served as Branch Secretary for New Zealand from 1914 to his death in 1957, an extraordinary period of office of 43 years. During this period he also served as RAOU Vice-President 1942-1943, and as President 1943-1944.
  Oliver was appointed Director of the Dominion Museum in 1928 1, and in 1930, he published the seminal guide New Zealand Birds, which was updated and expanded in 1955. He retired from the position of Director in 1947. Oliver was active in numerous scientific societies, and was a prolific contributor to New Zealand scientific literature over a long career.

  Winslow Paul Oliver (born March 3, 1973 in Houston, Texas) is a former American football running back in the National Football League for the Carolina Panthers and the Atlanta Falcons.
  Oliver is a 1991 graduate of Kempner High School in Sugar Land, Texas. He also attended the University of New Mexico, where he set a number of team records and was awarded the 1996 Hula Bowl MVP.
  In the third round of the 1996 NFL Draft (#73 overall pick) Oliver was selected by the Panthers. He played for the Panthers for three seasons, mainly on special teams. His jersey was #20. The highlight of his career was an 84 yard punt return for a touchdown against the New Orleans Saints on September 8, 1996.
  He became a free agent and played for the Falcons in the 1999 and 2000 seasons, before being released. He wore #26 for the Falcons.
