The City of Westminster () is a London borough occupying much of the central area of London, England, including most of the West End. It is located to the west of and adjoining the ancient City of London, directly to the east of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea , and its southern boundary is the River Thames. It is an Inner London borough and was created in 1965 when Greater London was established. At its creation Westminster was awarded city status, which had been previously held by the smaller Metropolitan Borough of Westminster. Aside from a number of large parks and open spaces, the density of the district is high. Many sites thought of as being in London are actually in Westminster, including Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, and 10 Downing Street. The city is divided into a number of localities including the ancient political district of Westminster around the Palace of Westminster; the shopping areas around Oxford Street, Regent Street, Piccadilly and Bond Street; and the night time entertainment district of Soho. Much of the city is residential, and in 2008 it was estimated to have a population of 236,000. The local authority is Westminster City Council.

Highams Park
Highams Park is a district in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, England, adjacent to Epping Forest. The forest at Highams Park contains a boating lake formed by Humphry Repton after damming the River Ching. There are parks and basic shopping facilities such as Budgens, but no major supermarket. Tesco made numerous planning applications to build a store on part of the industrial estate. Richard Jefferies
John Richard Jefferies (6 November 1848 - 14 August 1887) was an English nature writer, noted for his depiction of English rural life in essays, books of natural history, and novels. His childhood on a small Wiltshire farm had a great influence on him and provides the background to all his major works of fiction. For all that, these show a remarkable diversity, including Bevis (1882), a classic children's book, and After London (1885), an early work of science fiction. For much of his adult life, he suffered from tuberculosis, and his struggles with the illness and with poverty also play a role in his writing. British Railways re-built Merchant Navy Class No: 35028 Clan Line hurries North through Surbiton at the head of the United Kingdom Rail Tours Up The Royal Wessex from Swanage to London-Waterloo, steam-hauled from Southampton to London-Waterloo. Clan Line hauled the Down train from London-Victoria to Swanage earlier today. It's had been a typical April day with heavy showers and bright sunlight but when I filmed Clan Line it was quite dark but dry. Its Friday 27th April 2012 at 21:34 and Clan Line was four minutes late. Clan Line was rushing as it had the 18:06 South-West Trains service from Weymouth to London-Waterloo close behind. The Down train you see zipping past me is the 20:20 South-West Trains service from London-Waterloo to Exeter-St.David's. From Surbiton, Clan Line headed North up the South Western main line passing through Wimbledon, Clapham Junction and Vauxhall before arriving at London-Waterloo. It was nice to see Clan Line not hauling a VSOE for a change. Trivia time. This train was the 18th Up steam excursion of 2012 in the London area. Last year at this time there had been 23 Up excursions. This was the 9th Up run in 2012 by Clan Line, one more than this time last year. It's the 1st Up UK Rail Tour excursion around London of 2012, the same number as last year. Today's train was the 2nd Up steam special to run through Surbiton in 2012. There hadn't been any steam runs through Surbiton at this stage in 2011. Surbiton is a 5-track, 4-platform station <b>...</b>

Surbiton, a suburban area of London in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, is situated next to the River Thames, with a mixture of Art-Deco courts, more recent residential blocks and grand, spacious 19th century townhouses blending into a sea of semi-detached 20th century housing estates. Surbiton is a popular rail commuter town, located approximately 10 miles to the south west of central London (12 miles by rail from London Waterloo).

The town started to prosper when a plan to build the main railway line down to the south coast closer to nearby Kingston was rejected by Kingston Council, fearing the detrimental effect it would have on the busy coaching trade. This resulted in the line being routed further south, through a cutting in the hill south of Surbiton. Surbiton railway station opened in 1838, and was originally named Kingston-upon-Railway.[1] It was only renamed Surbiton to distinguish it from the new Kingston railway station on the Shepperton branch line, which opened on 1 January 1869. The present station has a fine art deco façade.
As a result, Kingston is now on a branch line, whereas passengers from Surbiton (smaller in comparison) can reach Central London in about 15 minutes on the main line, with a fast service into London Waterloo, as well as places further afield, including Portsmouth and Southampton. This has made Surbiton a convenient location from which to commute into Central London, reflected in the size of its population.
Starting in the early 2000s, a West London Orbital underground railway, which would terminate at Surbiton, has been promoted by the influential West London Business group.

The Pre-Raphaelite painters John Everett Millais (1829–1896) and William Holman Hunt (1827–1910) came to Surbiton in 1851, 26 years before Richard Jefferies (1848–1887). Millais actually used the Hogsmill, close to Tolworth Court Bridge, as the background for his painting ‘Ophelia’. Holman Hunt used the fields just south of this spot as the background to ‘The Hireling Shepherd.’[citation needed]
In the mid 1870s the novelist Thomas Hardy (1840–1928) lived in a house called 'St. David's Villa' in Hook Road, Surbiton for a year after his marriage to Emma Gifford. The writer Enid Blyton (1897–1968) was governess to a Surbiton family for four years from 1920, at a house called 'Southernhay', also on the Hook Road.[2] C.H. Middelton (1886-1945), who broadcast on gardening during the Second World War, lived in Surbition, where he died suddenly outside his home.[3]
A 1972 episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus featured a mock documentary which investigated whether the residents of Hounslow, another London area suburb, had been long-ago descendants of the people of Surbiton "who had made the great trek north."[4]
Surbiton's main claim to popular fame is as an icon of suburbia in such British television programmes as The Good Life (starring Richard Briers, Penelope Keith, Paul Eddington and Felicity Kendal, though location filming was done in Northwood, North-West London),[citation needed] and John Sessions' comedy series Stella Street, which has on occasion led to the town being nicknamed "Suburbiton". Other names for the town include "the 'Surbs" and "the 'Tron" in reference to '80s movies The 'Burbs and Tron.[citation needed]
The Surbiton train station features in the 2009 film version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Blood Prince with actors Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter and Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore. Filming took place in November 2007.[5]

There are a number of primary schools in Surbiton. There is also a selection of Secondary Schools situated here these of which are; Southborough High School a community secondary school, Hollyfield School a foundation secondary school and Surbiton High School a private secondary school.

From 1998 to 2008 Surbiton hosted the first round of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) season. The Surbiton Trophy was part of the ATP Challenger Series and in 2009 the venue was moved to Nottingham as part of a reorganisation by the LTA.
Surbiton is the current home of both male and female football teams, Surbiton Wanderers and Surbiton Town Ladies FC.

Surbiton Caledonian Society was formed in 1948, by Scots for the benefit of Scots living in the area, and the first dance took place on the 11th of March 1948 to the music of a band called Jock and his Blue Kittens. From those early days, social dancing formed the Society’s primary activity, but it was then made up of both ballroom and Scottish country dancing. Eventually, Scottish country dancing came to predominate and has been the mainstay of the Society ever since. The Society is affiliated to the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS). By 1966, the Society had found a permanent base at St Mark’s Church Hall, Church Hill Rd, Surbiton, although it is temporarily meeting at St Matthew’s Primary School, Langley Rd, Surbiton, during the rebuilding programme at St Mark’s.
