Ramya Bhat & Srikant Rao - Cinematic South Indian Hindu Highlights (Destination Wedding)
On April 7, 2012, Ramya and Srikant married at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort and Spa located in Phoenix, Arizona. The morning started out with the groom arriving to the ceremony site on a horse following his baraat, which was accompanied by live dhol, music, and dancing. The traditional South Indian Hindu ceremony was held outdoors on the scenic Wildflower Ballroom Lawn. As soon as I met this client, I instantly felt connected to them, they were so excited about having us cover their wedding, and we were equally excited about flying out to Arizona. One of their wishes for video, was to get a same day edit of their wedding. We shot the baraat & ceremony in the morning, and by the evening, we had a beautiful highlight piece for them to share with their friends and family at the reception. Behind the scenes: We covered this wedding with 3 Canon 5D Mark II cameras, glide cam, and sliders. We produced a 10 minute same day highlight reel, and an extended reel of the full wedding. Bengali Hindu Wedding in Chicago, Illinois United States
www.delackmediagroup.com The phone rang and I picked it up. It was Rakhi on the other line. She found our company by doing a search on Yelp. She told me about how she loved our style of cinematography and wanted us to film their wedding, which was going to take place in a few weeks. Luckily, we were available! A small group of their closest family and friends gathered in the home for a beautiful ceremony. I believe this was our first Bengali Hindu wedding. During this wedding video trailer, you'll see the blowing of the conch shell and the women making the "Ooli" sound, which are both symbolically meant to ensure everyone's attention is drawn to the main ceremony. A few weeks later, we showed this trailer at their reception. I was so fortunate to capture such an amazing event. Thank you for asking me to be a part of your wedding. It was a true honor. "CITY OF LAKES" The Feature
What happens to a dream when it becomes reality?
Does it still exist somewhere, in some ethereal place, waiting to come to fruition again?
Could a fictional narrative capture an emotional state, and the true meaning behind a real, live event with more drama and conviction than a traditional documentary?
These were just some of the questions that arose when I took on the “CITY OF LAKES” project late last year. First, it would become an unprecedented attempt to combine a fully scripted, produced film with Melissa & Samir's real, live wedding. All with the intention of creating one, seamless film. Second, the live wedding and production would be shot entirely on-location in Udaipur, India over a period of nine days. Third, our skeleton crew would consist solely of live event filmmakers from across North America, who would shoot the live wedding events and production simultaneously & exclusively on HDSLRs, the Canon 5D Mark II and 7D.
“CITY OF LAKES” is as much a story about what it means to return to the birthplace of one’s ancestors, as it is an exploration of the Hindu faith, and the rituals of a Hindu marriage. Central to this is the Ganesh puja, which in simple terms, is a prayer over a fire believed to invoke the spirit of Ganesh, a great deity and protector, who can remove all obstacles from one’s path. The puja is performed several times in the film and carries great significance to the plot and characters in both literal and metaphoric ways.
Melissa & Samir had always dreamed of being married in India. We hope this film helps them cherish that dream. But it could not have been without the acting talents of Anubhab Saha, Sharon Chawda and Rushad Rana, who were consummate professionals and a joy to work with. It also could not have been without the support of our sponsors: Canon, who provided two pre-production 7Ds and a host of L-series lenses; Tiffen, who provided all of our lighting; and Cinevate, who sent us much needed gear and sponsored an incredible behind-the-scenes campaign viewable at Cinevate.com.
The challenges were immediate, abundant and frequent. At times, we were certain the film was destined for failure; I often wondered if the film was too ambitious to execute. But what resulted was due in no small part to a crew made up of live event filmmakers who deal routinely in making the spontaneous appear staged. We're proud to share Melissa & Samir’s ‘hybrid’ feature, “CITY OF LAKES,” which hopefully achieves more than a documentary, and perhaps at the same time, more than a scripted film.
There is a final question we hope you’ll find difficult to answer as you watch our film. In more ways than one, try to answer:
What is real?
Thanks for watching,
-Kevin

Sapna & Vijay's Same-Day-Edit/Concept E-Session, Caribbean Island of Aruba
We learn something new and beautiful about the Indian culture with every South Asian wedding film we produce. Sapna and Vijay’s gorgeous destination wedding in Aruba was no exception. The week of festivities would be a memorable departure from the norm, with the island serving as a picturesque backdrop for the Atlanta natives' lavish two-day South Asian wedding. The celebration joined friends and family from all over the world to partake in the couples' Vidhi and Pithi, outdoor Sangeet and Hindu wedding ceremony overlooking Palm beach. In this piece, the challenge was blending the rich visual symbols of a modern Hindu wedding with an homage to the distinct sights and sounds of the Caribbean islands. Central to our approach was a focus on water as a theme, for its recurrence in the rituals of a Hindu wedding ceremony, to its ever-presence as a symbolic motif in Bollywood cinema. From the blue/green hues in the color palette to the literal moments of washing and rainfall itself, water as a symbol of renewal and purity was a link common to both Hinduism and the couples' chosen destination of the island.
But the idea to attempt a pseudo concept engagement session in the rain was inspired at the last minute by weather reports showing scattered showers the week of the trip. We are always looking for inventive ways to try new things. So to pull off the shoot, Sapna and Vijay were “on call” the day before festivities were set to begin, and none of us knew if or when we would see rain. But it managed to fall at the perfect moment and we hurried to produce the impromptu shoot on the very same beach as their ceremony. The same-day-edit premiered at their reception just prior to their grand entrance on the last night of the trip. We couldn't be more pleased with the results and were honored to document this memorable event for such a fun couple. Wedding coordination by Nirjary Desai of KisCubed Events, with Mehndi, hair & makeup by Susmita Patel of Studio Sush, florals by Ragini Patel and additional coordination by The Westin Aruba Resort & Casino. Production assisted by Matt Mangham, Ray Tsang and Ishwar Daryanani.

k where do i begin?!!
this summer has been incredibly busy, from vancouver, to miami, to sydney, to hawaii, to niagara falls (haha k this is only a 200km drive) shooting weddings, teaching workshops, shooting corporate promos + commercials and of course shooting more weddings.
things are taking longer then expected but b4 i launch my website + 2010 highlights; i want to quickly share with you the first ever myw multi day south asian wedding that i attended this past weekend.
while i've had the oppurtunity to shoot hindu and sikh indian weddings in the past this was the first time i've shot a 5 day (yes 5 day) Ismaili wedding; and i sure had a TON of learning to do. I was up with farzana + shameer @ their place (luckly they live 2 mins away from me!! hehe) till 5 am, after a 4 hour pre-wedding consultation to learn exactly all of the different rituals, ceremonies, scarves, certain drinks that have cultural/religious/mythological significance to them and their culture. needless to say my head pretty much exploded but i was pumpppppeed to make this happen.
and while its hard to not notice, farzana + shameer are obviously a stunning looking couple, but they are also super warm, down to earth, approachable, caring and just all around awesome!!! their bridal party, friends and family were supppper amazing as well.
i REALALLLLLLYY love you guys!!! thank you for having me document your wedding.
TECHNICAL + PRODUCTION TIDBITS for my industry friends and colleagues.
- being a multi-day event requiring many symmetrical ceremonies happening @ the same time, I contracted my internationally acclaimed wedding cinematographer/educator/best friend konrad czystowski to help me shoot the events that i couldnt personally shoot myself due to logistical limitations. one of the most important lessons l learned from internationally acclaimed ray roman while teaching @ his workshop in miami a month ago; was that he stressed how important it is to build solid relationships with great, honest and genuine ppl who can help us in our journey in this industry. in turn, konrad brings me to shoot a wedding with him in hawaii... WOOHOO!!!
now to give you an idea of how much work was involved in this weddng, here is a breakdown.
-WEDNESDAY henna ceremony - shot by myw + 1 5D mkii. the ceremony was 6 hours.
-THURSDAY henna ceremony for the bridesmaids + women from the grooms side of the family. this is the day where the siblings of both the bride and groom goto the mosque and fill up the guri with holy water and bring it back home for the bride and groom to bathe in it. various other ceremonies (egging of the groom, eating of butter chicken (heheh), more to be explained below) also occur on thursday as well. i would say this was another 7 hours or so. both Konrad and myself used one Canon 5D mkII to cover everything. konrad @ groom's house while I was at the brides.
-FRIDAY this was the day the bride and groom, as well as both their respective families get to finally meet and see eachother, this was @ a reception gathering. I shot this mostly myself with Konrad helping out for 3 hours. Total amount of time I would say I was shooting on and off was another 10 hours.
-SATURDAY this was the break day where no shooting was involved and I basically went through a good 30 hours of footage and edited + transcoded between multiple machines straight an entire day (and night). Konrad's pre sequenced and rough-cut timelines were a huge help in making this possible.
-SUNDAY I marched on the big wedding day on SUNDAY without a single second of sleep. Yes I almost cried in agony from editing during the middle of the night. Nevertheless, Konrad was at my house 7:45am, and the worlds busiest/most talented 16 year old boy wonder cinematographer Mark Klassen arrived too, and my trusty protege from scratch and Troy Turgano also helped with the editing duties all day. This wedding day ran from 8 am to about 1am, and had 2 sets of preps, 2 first meetings, 2 photosessions, 1 wedding ceremony and 1 wedding reception.
this piece was shot entirely with Canon 5DmkII's in 24p mode.
there is no doubt that the 5Dmkii currently provides the highest value/dollar HDSLR in event filmmaking industry today. it is better then the 7D due to it's full frame capabilities, cleaner low light and richer color reproduction. when i compare the 5d to the 1dmk4; I do notice that the 1dmk4 is better in low light, and the 1dmk4's crop factor is better in certain cases (removing mild vignetting in some lenses as well as removing the less sharp image characteristics @ the edges of an image); but for the price of a single 1dmk4, i can purchases 2 5dmkii's. it's a complete no brainer.
- as both konrad and I taught in sydney australia 2 weeks ago and did a

Ami & Sidd's Same-Day-Edit, Newport Coast, CA
Ami & Sidd arrived in California by way of Boston just days before their epic week of South Asian wedding celebrations. Friends and family arrived from all over the world to participate in the festivities, nearly one year in the making. The fall coast, overlooked by Pelican Hill in Newport Beach and The Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel, could not have served as more perfect backdrops for the auspicious occasion. The stage was set with stunning decor and event design by Pink Rock Events, makeup by Jeannie Jeffries, and an all-star photography team of Dina Douglass, Yoshi Morimoto and Robert Evans. But it was Ami & Sidd’s infectious joy, the true love they share for one another, and their families' reverence for the timeless traditions of a Hindu wedding that made it easy to celebrate their incredible 2-day event in this very special same-day-edit, which we premiered at their reception. Assisted by Drew Renner and Matt Mangham.

Satyamev Jayate - Big Fat Indian Wedding - 20th May 2012
Most people dream of a lavish wedding but the reality in India is that expensive wedding celebrations and heavy dowry demands end up making brides' lives miserable and ruining their families. The very concept of marriage has been turned into a transaction, with no value placed on the people or the relationship. But this can change, and it is up to girls and their families tosay NO to dowry, to insist on simple ceremonies and restore the sanctity of the wedding bond. The SMS Question which Aamir Khan asks in this episode is - ʺDo you think marriages have become a business transaction in our country today?ʺ
