The Impact of Twitter on Journalism | Off Book | PBS
The world of journalism has changed in the internet era. Newsrooms are significantly smaller now than they were 10 years ago, and news is no longer a once-a-day product, but instead a constant flow of information. The rise of Twitter brought concerns within the industry - would this overwhelming source of direct raw information put professional reporters out of business? Journalists are now faced with the challenge of adapting their roles in this digital era, finding new ways to add value to content, and helping to ensure that the internet is changing our worldview for the better. China Focus - Citizen Journalists in China
When you hear "journalist in China," what do you think of? A reporter for state-run media? Someone who works for a major international news organization? Or a citizen journalist trying to skirt censorship? If you're the latter type of journalist, you face more than just censorship. You could face long prison terms and even torture. Especially if you breach a politically sensitive topic at a politically sensitive time. That's what happened to self-taught Tibetan filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen, who was recently given an International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists. We sit down with Madeline Earp, senior Asia researcher for CPJ, to talk about his case, and what it's like for citizen journalists in China today.

Follow Sierra @ www.twitter.com Sierra Adamson talks to Jeremy Scahill, journalist and author of 'Blackwater,' about some of the under-reported issues such as drone strikes in the Middle East, Obama's kill list/Disposition Matrix, NDAA, use of the Espionage Act against whistle-blowers. Jeremy talks about the assassination of the 16 year old American citizen, Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, who was killed by a drone strike authorized by President Obama and the response Robert Gibbs recently gave us when we questioned him on it. Media Mayhem - Sandusky, Scientology & Ethical Journalism with Gawker.com Senior Reporter John Cook
40 years on from Watergate, journalism has gone through tectonic shifts that affect how reporters get their stories. We examine those shifting ethical grounds with gawker.com senior reporter John Cook. We discuss topics ranging from Christopher Hitchens, Barbara Walters, the FOXNews mole, the Church of Scientology, the Sandusky trial and more--always with one eye on the place for integrity in journalism in the 'gotcha!'-age. John is not afraid to demystify his subjects--even when he happens to admire them--and be an advocate for truthful media. It's a striking discussion. GUEST BIO: John Cook is a senior reporter for Gawker Media and has worked as a TV reporter and writer for Radar magazine, Mother Jones and the Chicago Tribune. ADD'L LINKS: twitter.com gawker.com blogs.villagevoice.com EPISODE BREAKDOWN: 00:01 The uncensored obituary--demystifying Mike Wallace. 00:37 Welcoming John Cook. 04:30 To Catch a Predator and the ethics of journalism collaborating with law enforcement. 07:30 Barbara Walters coverage of Assad and Syria. 10:11 Eulogizing Christopher Hitchens with honesty. 15:02 Is there a place for disparaging people you disagree with in journalism? 16:45 The Clinton impeachment and the punishable offenses of a president. 20:57 The temptation to shut up and follow the party line. 21:37 Barack Obama and the fast and furious controversy. 22:39 The Fox Mole, infiltrating Bill O'reilly for Gawker and the repercussions. 27:51 If Watergate was reported today...paying for ...

Exclusive Julian Assange Interview With Cenk Uygur (12/22/10)
Transcript: tinyurl.com Cenk Uygur (host of The Young Turks) interviewed WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on MSNBC's Dylan Ratigan show. They discussed critics of Assange, the treatment of Private Bradley Manning and more. Portion of Transcript: CENK: Well Julian I want to get to as much as possible here so I want to give you a chance to respond one by one to your critics, first to Mitch McConnell who is of course the leader of the Republicans in the Senate and to Joe Biden who both said that called you a high tech terrorist how do you respond to Joe Biden the Vice President of the United States saying that to you? JULIAN: Well let's look at the definition of terrorism, the definition of terrorism is a group that uses violence or the threat of violence for political ends now no one in our four year publishing covering over 120 countries has ever been physically harmed as a result of what we've done. Now that's not just us saying that, that's the Pentagon saying that, that's NATO and Kabal saying that. No one, not a shred of evidence. Now believe me if they could find or even easily manufacture a shred of evidence they would be doing that immediately so it's clear that whoever the terrorists are here it's not us. But we see constant threats from people, Republicans in the Senate trying to make a name for themselves, to people like Sarah Palin to Shock Jocks on Fox and unfortunately some members also of the Democratic party calling for my assassination calling for the ...
